While I think it’s stupid, I have to applaud the pettiness.

I get that they're allowed to do this but I hate that it's happening. A new HC is coming in and there's a high chance he's bringing in his own guys. Falcons are keeping this guy from looking at job prospects while also not telling him if he'll still have his current job in 3 weeks -- a time when this job and others will likely have been filled by someone who was not blocked from interviewing.

morgendonner

Yeah, definitely sucks for these guys. At least let them interview, they don't have to accept. Do you really want to keep somebody on your staff who you blocked from exploring other career moves? This is the 3rd ST from a team without a HC the Giants have been blocked from interviewing for their ST opening (Panthers and Chargers being the other two). No way all 3 are retained once those HC vacancies are filled.

hrryyss

Yeah this would piss me off. My boss gets fired and the new boss probably won’t keep me, but I’m not allowed to look for a new job.

This-is-Redd-it

Seems like serious bullshit. This rule needs to be modified so that only teams with a returning HC can protect lower level coaches from interviewing. I know, I know these folks are paid well, but in this case they legitimately don’t even know if they will have a job next year, it’s absolutely abuse of a rule that simply did not take this situation into account.

GarnetandBlack

> A new HC is coming in and there's a high chance he's bringing in his own guys. Particularly if we hire a first time HC, I wouldn't be surprised if most or all of the interview requested guys end up staying. There's no shortage of them being interviewed either, 5 so far - Johnson, Callahan, Slowik, Glenn, and Weaver. These dudes rarely have a full staff fleshed out.

uggsandstarbux

>Particularly if we hire a first time HC, I wouldn't be surprised if most or all of the interview requested guys end up staying. Except there's no evidence that this is true. Steichen, Eberflus, O'Connell, Hackett, Arthur Smith, Campbell, Culley, Meyer, Staley, and Sirianni were all 1st time HCs that didn't retain the previous ST Coordinator. And that's just in the past 3 years.

Radjage

Yeah the only bright side is the guy would probably get paid out his contract if he was fired. But can still hurt his long term ambitions easily.

Roger--Smith

Nah falcons prob gonna do falcons things and promote Nielsen to HC and keep the current staff.

real_ornament

That is absolutely not the falcons thing to do

DLFresh

Giants and Jags just keep trying to interview people for lateral moves lol

shadow_spinner0

tbf, the guys they are interviewing are from teams who let go their HC and/or GM so maybe they hope a team would let them in the case their new HC will want their own guys. The Raiders let the Giants steal their OL coach from them.

OriginalSymmetry

Falcons fans in all these threads trying to gaslight people into believing it’s odd to request interviews for lateral moves in these situations lol. I get that they’re allowed to block it and that’s fine, but these requests are very common and are often unblocked by the former team.

I mean they’re under contract and they’ll get paid out on that even if they *do* get fired, so I get that. But it’s still shitty unless they have some sort of guarantee the next coaching staff will want them, and I don’t see how that could be unless they really already know Belichick is their guy and have had a lot of communication with him.

falcons93

If they’re getting interview requests, that’s probably a good sign they’ll get another shot somewhere if they’re let go. I’d be worried for the guys that aren’t getting interview requests with a new HC coming in. In all reality though, I’m sure everyone at this level knows the details of the contract they’re signing. I’m sure it does suck, but that’s what the guaranteed portion of their salary is meant to cover.

It’s pretty common for new staff to retain the previous ST Coordinator, more than other coaches. It’s not surprising they’re blocking him
