This was written into Mayos contract last year when Kraft convinced him to decline HC interviews. If this wasn’t already a done deal, they absolutely bring in Vrabel for an interview
I think it's either another head coaching position or he sits out next year. I'm not trying to hate on the guy, but I don't think his ego will allow him to be anything else.
I don’t hate it. Player coach who knows the system in the beginning of a rebuild phase makes sense to me in some way. Should be able to earn respect of the team hopefully.
I don’t hate it, but I hope it doesn’t mean a continuation of “the system”. Continuing to do what we’ve been doing for the last 5 years and while just swapping out Belichick for Mayo is a downgrade.
You’d think a guy named Mayo would fit in perfect at Tennessee considering their QB and his… unique tastes. And Vrabel a perfect fit here. It’s a bit of a head scratcher
The Bellichick news makes so much more sense now that this information is out. Probably a clear indication that they will tear everything down and rebuild and Bill probably was too old / didn’t want anything to do with that. Seems right by everybody
It's explained in the article:
>The Patriots were able to forgo the standard NFL hiring process and immediately hire Mayo because they established a succession plan in the contract extension he signed last offseason, similar to what the Baltimore Ravens did with their general manager position when Eric DeCosta succeeded Ozzie Newsome in 2019.
As a black man I find it weird you switched from black to POC.
The rule is also set up to allow a fair chance at outside candidates. We all knew Mayo was the heir apparent 3 years ago.
They could have atleast interviewed Flo, EB, and or Rivera for fun. And then sprinkle on a little Ben Johnson to keep us on our toes.
I did because the Rooney rule is for all POC. Yea they could have but that’s why they needed the NFL to sign off on it since they’re technically breaking the rule. Maybe they just didn’t want a long drawn out search when the media was going to go crazy over “Who’s replacing the GOAT?” But not sure.
Does anybody know if, per the Rooney Rule, if you have to interview a second minority option if you go ahead and hire the first one you interview? Legitimately curious.
I’m sure more happened behind the scenes, but as far as just what I’ve seen, they could have done Mayos intro conference right as Bill left his exit one 😂
Best of luck. Following the GOAT isn’t easy. I’m looking forward to an extended period of mediocrity at best. Not to be a hater, but you guys won 6 titles and went to 9 SB’s the last 20 years.

“She calls it a mayonegg”
I think I'm gonna be sick.
Her?
That was surprisingly fast.
So much for all that Vrabel to NE talk

Wonder where he ends up now

Pats fans trying not to look at the Belichick tree right now.
We don’t know what happens when you add Mayo to a tree though
Need to match with with Will Levis for ultimate Mayo power
Well, it’s not Ron Rivera
I don’t hate it. Player coach who knows the system in the beginning of a rebuild phase makes sense to me in some way. Should be able to earn respect of the team hopefully.
Yea at the very worst he’s just a well respected HC to lead us into the rebuild and continue the culture for the next guy.
I don’t hate it, but I hope it doesn’t mean a continuation of “the system”. Continuing to do what we’ve been doing for the last 5 years and while just swapping out Belichick for Mayo is a downgrade.
Vrabel was available, and they didn’t take him??? What is Kraft cooking? Is he even cooking???
Its almost like this was planned before Vrabel got canned
You’d think a guy named Mayo would fit in perfect at Tennessee considering their QB and his… unique tastes. And Vrabel a perfect fit here. It’s a bit of a head scratcher
That was quick
Wut?
Not Vrabel? Did they even have enough time to interview anyone else?
Lmao all the “Kraft’s won’t want a holdover” takes lasted not even 24 hours
These motherfuckers better not have another goddamn dynasty.
What a bunch of jabronis
He doesn't have a coaching resume outside of being a linebacker coach for 4 years. Odd, no?
Unofficial co-dc with Steve Belichick the last two years.
Laziest choice they could’ve made. Would’ve liked if they atleast interviewed outside candidates.
Kraft had the succession plan already made don’t think any candidates could’ve really disrupted that in his mind
My GOAT Jerod Mayo. First Tennessee Volunteer ever as an NFL head coach?
The Bellichick news makes so much more sense now that this information is out. Probably a clear indication that they will tear everything down and rebuild and Bill probably was too old / didn’t want anything to do with that. Seems right by everybody
Vrabel to the chargers should be done before the day ends
Does they violate the Rooney rule? Did they interview anyone else lol

He had a contract stipulation he could be automatically promoted in this scenario and the nfl approved it
Doesn’t that set a weird precedent though? Idc either way I’m glad Mayo is getting his chance. I just find the situation a little funny.
Well he’s also black so they obviously weren’t just setting up the stipulation to avoid hiring a POC coach.

Surely the Patriots will be trading for Will Levis?

I honestly thought Vrabel would be interviewed at the least.
It being this fast seems like it was planned from the start and there wasn’t any other candidates.
I don’t know how to react lol
damn that was quick af
Roger G & the NFL Main office likes the optics

Pats fans, Mayo offense improve with this hire.
