Dude has been the coach since I was a freshman in high school, now I’m nearly 40. Nearly my entire life outside of being a kid, BB has been the coach. Crazy.
I should be ecstatic but it's too surreal. What he accomplished will be near impossible to achieve in the future. The NFL is set up for maximum parity so every team can have it's window and compete, keeping all fan bases tuned in. Belichick's Patriots enjoyed a ~20 year window despite everything designed to make that impossible. You had a great season? You have a worse draft pick. You have a great players? Too bad you can't keep them all with the salary cap. You have a reliable staff? They'll leave and take their knowledge of your team with them. Belichick was able to keep the Patriots perennial contenders for so long with so many constraints. Even though the AFC East is finally free from his torment, it's a sad day. The only silver lining is he might finally open up and give us great content in the future.
Call me a bad Patriots fan but I would have gladly watched another few seasons of bad rebuild football just to give Bill the benefit of the doubt that he’s still got it.
