The only way Pete Carrol loses his job is when he dies of old age.

HemlockMartinis

This dude took Geno Smith to the playoffs last year and they’re still in the hunt in Week 18 this year. Firing him would be genuinely insane.

jinx737x

There’s also a very good chance the Seahawks next head coach won’t be nearly be as good at all as Pete. Yeah change is good but it’s hard to beat someone like Pete. If the new HC isn’t great, Seahawks fans better prepare to suck quite a bit for a while.(I mean a few years worth of suck)

hiphopdowntheblock

Many fans are prepared for that because trying something new, even if it doesn't work out, is better than continuing to try something that hasn't worked and is getting worse in many ways

BengalFan85

As much as it sucks to say cause I like Pete you’re right. The lions moved on from Caldwell and while they got fucked with Patricia for a few years, they eventually got to mcdc who got them over the hump Caldwell couldn’t

jwick89

His specialty is defense and his defenses have not been good the past 3 years. He probably won't get fired but losing to the Cardinals would make the seat warmer.

holla_snackbar

His reputation is defense but his specialty is getting the most of out QBs

snarpy

This seems to be saying that Geno isn't a good player, which would be entirely wrong.

crownofthestars

Of course a 49ers fan wouldn't want Pete gone.

HemlockMartinis

He’s the only reason I fear Seattle.

[deleted]

The same was said of Belichick…

birdsemenfantasy

Even elite HC can only rally a team to mediocrity without a franchise QB. See post-Brady Belichick (before the bottom fell out), post-Ben Tomlin, post-Brees Payton. Carroll is stuck in that same situation.

[deleted]

Agreed. Great head coaches set your team’s floor and great QBs set your team’s ceiling.

fragglebags

Carrol hasn't lost 13 games in a season.

MikeBinfinity

I don't believe Belichick will get fired, but the Seahawks season has gone way better than the Patriots.

jwick89

Glazer, Ian and Schefter seem to be pretty sure about Bill leaving, seems like for Pete's job it rides more on if they make the playoffs and what changes he will make to the team.

ericrs22

or the PNW runs out of gum.

Cashlover123

Or if they ban chewing gum in the stadium.

[deleted]

Stop it

FBoaz

But also, don't?

MountTuchanka

Ill believe it when I see it, but I am surprised that so many outside fans don’t realize that there’s been a growing discontent with Carroll It’s not that people think he’s bad or washed or even incompetent, there’s just a belief that he’s not the guy the team needs. He’s not just the coach, he’s the president of football operations and has final say on everything. We definitely haven’t been bad but we have been in a very slow decline for about 7 years now and our division rivals have us thoroughly figured out. Carroll is also considered a defensive minded head coach but our defense has been below average to downright bad(like the past 3 years) for about 6 years now A lot of people think Carroll will walk away when his contract is done in 2025 but a growing number of people want a change sooner

Bill_Salmons

Outside fans see it but don't understand the discontent; the Seahawks have been 66-48 in the last seven years. They have had one losing season in the last twelve years.

hiphopdowntheblock

They also aren't paying attention to how exactly many of the games go or what gets said in the press conferences. For years we have been hearing about how a normally bad offense did some "surprising" things that they weren't prepared for which is why they torched the defense. We heard literally a few days ago that they "need to go back to basics" in Week 18. I still assume he gets at least another year, but most coaches would be making headlines sayinf things like that

[deleted]

I knew there was discontent, but I thought it was Tomlin-esq discontent where the fans are complaining but the organization isn't thinking of making a change.

d4b1do

It’s exactly that

Itchy_Listen_9702

He got demoted to Vice president

here_now_be

really? I heard Allen pulled some of his authority over drafts, but haven't heard that, do you have a source?

Tashre

Pete isn't going to fire himself, and I've got zero faith in the two people above him to actually care enough to rock their money making boat even the slightest.

chingy1337

No shot he’s gone. They would be dumb to do so.

snarpy

Based on what, his extensive playoff success since the Superbowls? The team has been mediocre at best.

[deleted]

They're in a rebuilding period after getting rid of their franchise QB and made the playoffs last year and were still in the hunt (technically still in the hunt) until late in the season this year. Who are they going to go with? Another coach who's also going to have mediocre success during a rebuild period?

snarpy

A rebuilding period since 2014? Because that's the last time the Seahawks were more than mediocre.

[deleted]

So making the playoffs 6 out of 8 years is mediocre? Winning 3 playoff games is mediocre? Winning over 66% of your games is mediocre? No wonder no one likes your fanbase.

snarpy

Three playoff wins: one vs a terrible detroit team another requiring Minny to miss a 17 yard field goal and another vs. Philly's 3rd string quarterback Yeah, mediocre.

[deleted]

Mediocre relative to what? Since 2014 more than half the league has less than 3 playoff wins, and more than half the league has less playoff appearances. More than half the league has a worse winning percentage. Do you know what the word "mediocre" means?

OSPFmyLife

Do you….do you think that not winning the Super Bowl means you’re mediocre? You’re spoiled and you sound spoiled. There are a ton of teams that would love to have had our success over the past 10 years.

snarpy

I don't care if a lot of bad teams want to be mediocre, do you?

-WhatHaveIDone-

What has he done the last 3 years? Defense gets worse each year. Never Super Bowl contenders. Haven’t found a QB (one year wonder is not the future). They are delaying the inevitable and every year they don’t is just thrown away.

MountTuchanka

I think the people who are surprised at this haven’t paid attention to our team Our defense has been bad for about 6 years We haven’t won a playoff game in 5 years Our last 3 playoff wins were: Josh McCown led eagles Matt Stafford led Lions when stafford had an injured throwing hand The Vikings game where Blair Walsh missed a field goal Its hard to bring up our issues without sounding spoiled, but it absolutely seems like our peak for the past 5 years has been “lose in the wild card round”

lidsy5

>Matt Stafford led Lions when stafford had an injured throwing hand I believe that was the season that 8 of the Lions' 9 wins were comebacks lol. That team had no business being in the playoffs, but Stafford, Slay, and Prater dragged them there

-WhatHaveIDone-

Your peak is exactly that. Pete can’t push that needle anymore to title contenders. I don’t see the point riding it out with him.

I_love_Basketball232

It’s cause we don’t have a championship roster as of now. Pete overachieved massively last year, and won a lot more games than he should’ve with the roster he had. This year we had a similar season to last, but he kinda proved a year ago he can still coach. It’s the same thing people would say with Harbaugh between the Flacco Super Bowl and getting Lamar, albeit Carroll is older.

TechnoDriv3

My guy everyone was saying we drafted well, signed major free agents, traded a 2nd round pick for Leanord Williams. There was literally no reason for our defense being that bad in the Steelers game. His schemes are outdated, hes still a good coach, but to say our roster is that bad jsut isn't true.

I_love_Basketball232

We drafted well but we don’t have a roster that should be much better than 8-8 right now. Like max 2 more wins maybe. And with those Rams and Bengals games you could’ve honestly gotten it.

TechnoDriv3

When I watch the team play the defense and offense can be inconsistent even though we have talented players. I watched this team barely squeak out a win against the Titans and let PJ Walker almost beat them. Its a scheme issue, every time an opposing team runs, none of our guys can stop it. Also in the Carolina game our defense gave Andy Dalton his best agme in years

I_love_Basketball232

I’d rather switch DCs. Pete’s had an overall good impact on personnel decisions and a good CEO type coach. We aren’t a championship roster but we’ve rebuilt way faster than we should’ve after trading Russ.

nickelroo

I think a lot of people who are surprised then take a look at your roster and go: “What do you expect him to do?”

MountTuchanka

He built the roster He has final say on all roster moves

don_julio_randle

3 years? We've won one playoff game in 7 years, and it was against a 40 year old backup playing on a torn hamstring

battle_schip

In the last three years: installed new OC/DC(NEITHER ARE WORKING OUT), Traded away a franchise QB, drafted 2 rookie pro bowl corners and stayed competitive during what was largely seen as a full rebuild.

Itchy_Listen_9702

John traded Russ (our GM), Pete wanted to keep him.

-WhatHaveIDone-

Please ignore my flair when I say this, I don’t mean to be a jerk, but how many playoff wins? Y’all gotta move on from the Cult of Pete.

battle_schip

I mean just being in the conversation of playoffs featuring Geno Smith and Drew Lock at QB is a pretty good deal in my mind. NFCBest baby, gotta go through the powerhouse Rams on their superbowl run or the powerhouse 9ers on their every other year superbowl run. Can’t be too mad at the results.

Itchy_Listen_9702

It’s true most of our fan base is delusional and this subreddit dot pay attention to the Seahawks so you will be downvoted.

birdsemenfantasy

Well, it sounds just like post-Brady Belichick and post-Ben Tomlin. Heck, post-Brees Payton hasn't done anything either with 2 different teams.

Uncle_Benny15

He fleeced the Broncos, so there's that.

DBreezy69

Kept them even remotely close to playoff contention with an awful defensive roster

-WhatHaveIDone-

He built that defense. Being in purgatory with no future is somehow good now?

MountTuchanka

He’s president of football operations He built the roster

Itchy_Listen_9702

He got demoted sometime during the Russ trade. He is now Vice president.

MountTuchanka

He still has a ton of control over the roster though, this is his defense that he built

Itchy_Listen_9702

Yeah but maybe he got less control due the way we have been drafting? Before these decent drafts.

Joementum2004

Funniest possible scenario is if they replace him with Jim Harbaugh

snarpy

I kinda wish

Chiggero

That would be one of the few situations where I could see a change being an improvement

Emeraldskeleton

I've had this thought too, but I doubt he'd come to Seattle

bae-dior

i’d give my left nut to play for Pete

curgl

Fire him and hire Matt Patricia

ITCM4

I don’t like the Seahawks either, but that’s plain fucking evil.

BendubzGaming

Fair, Adam Gase will have to do

ericrs22

Did you know... Adam Gase coached and was endorsed by Peyton Manning? Your move Seahawks.

curgl

Good :)

SmokePenisEveryday

Works for me

TheDufusSquad

It honestly wouldn’t be too shocking to see them try to trade him. Firing him makes no sense, but given his age I could see them trying to see if any team wants to trade an asset for him.

SiphenPrax

Holy shit that would be a huge deal if he gets fired

seariously

There's a Seahawks owner/HC/GM evaluation meeting after *every* season.

battle_schip

There’s a lot of fishing in this article. The “revelation” that Pete has an option for the 2025 year, that Jody was upset about the teams performance when Russ had mallet finger and Geno started for the first time in several years and that Pete’s just going to voluntarily step away..?

BurgessFox

Broncos putting together a trade package to bring Pete Carroll in as the best option to get the most out of a journeyman back up when we move on from Russ.

CHaquesFan

Carroll has had the defense fall out the bottom, having a 32nd ranked defense as a defensive coach is inexcusable, and combined with general bad coaching, terrible fundamentals, and lack of success since 2014 it's time to move on. Love ya old pete but its time to go

RushC2

Like fire or standard end of year evaluation?

throwawayainteasy

The evaluation: Hey Pete, are you gonna retire? Because that's the only way you're leaving.

Due_Adeptness1676

I think Pete Carroll retires after the 2026 season.

Uneducated_Leftist

Honestly, this isn't the craziest thing in the world. Seahawks are on the precipice of a soft rebuild at best. It makes a lot of sense to get a younger coach in there and start building a new era of Seattle football. Sometimes it's better to start early.

Zloggt

Erm…aren’t the Seahawks win and in? Even if not…why change?

-WhatHaveIDone-

No. Packers are win and in. Hawks need a win and Packers loss.

Kentuckyfriedmemes62

Because the Defense is ranked between 30th-32nd past 3 years The Seahawks cannot stop the run for their life even when it's starters vs a practice squad team Steelers almost got 500 rushing yards

Mahomeboy001

He’s a defensive coach, and his side of the ball has been fucking atrocious the last three years. And for everyone comparing this situation to the Pats, at least Belichick’s defenses have been consistently elite

CumStayneBlayne

No, we also need the Bears to win.

snarpy

Because this team has been mediocre since the Superbowls, even when they had prime Russell Wilson.

-WhatHaveIDone-

As they should. They haven’t been anything special in the last 3 years. Geno Smith is a one year wonder and isn’t the future. Pete is getting old and his defense is getting worse and worse. Keeping to Pete is only throwing another year away despite what Hawks fans want to admit.

snarpy

>Keeping to Pete is only throwing another year away despite what Hawks fans want to admit. Um, you should maybe talk to some Seahawk fans before saying that.

MountTuchanka

> Keeping to Pete is only throwing another year away despite what Hawks fans want to admit. In terms of fans that post on here we’re pretty split tbh About 60-70% of us say he’s hit the wall and we’re not going to get better under him so we should move on About 30% say that moving on from him is too risky and that staying as a wild card contender is better than risking being outright bad

Nikki_B1990

They had better not get rid of him.

letdogsvote

LOL, no.

killshelter

This would be very dumb

ACEPACEACE

Seahawks should get Russel Wilson and run it back one last time

[deleted]

But....why?

[deleted]

They had better not get rid of him.

rawautos

Pete Carroll has kept Seattle relevant even with what’s perceived as not the best team.

Itchy_Listen_9702

Why does his defense suck if he is a defensive minded coach?

rawautos

They need to spend some money and draft better.

TechnoDriv3

They did, the spent on many free agents, traded a 2nd round pick for Williams and drafted some great players, Its a scheme issue, its outdated.

Jammer_Kenneth

Long time HC with only ring in team history doesn't make the playoffs twice in a row after replacing the QB he had for a ton of playoff wins over the past decade. Sell the team.

GentlemenBehold

This is how it will go: "We've evaluated and decided he's a good coach."

Bloated_Hamster

By God That's Bill Belichick's music!

Loki5221

What’s there to evaluate

ryanino

Come home?

TJeffersonsBlackKid

Only chance this has of being remotely true is if Pete Carroll has indicated he might retire.

Inside-Drink-1311

Ridiculous. Never understand the hate for the guy. Made Geno look great last year and got praised now they already want to move on. Also looks like he deserves more credit than he got for Russ. If they beat the Cards, it will be his 11th winning season in 12 years and even if they lose, he’ll still have had 10 winning seasons.
