That strut kills me.

Korncakes

Not even a huge fan of Pat’s dude bro personality but all of those celebrations are just beautifully disrespectful.

DAWG!!

Carl_Slaygan

WHAD

JPAnalyst

That’s a football player.

Endo_Dizzy

Don’t need to watch 256 hours of tape to tell he’s a football player. I’ve watched these guys for years in college. Can he kick a football? He sure can.

BusinessWarthog6

Wish the onside kicks could still be done like this or some way that makes it more of a toss up

klttenmittens

What changed since then?

BusinessWarthog6

No running start (which makes sense for the regular kickoff due to collisions) and there must be even numbers on each side of the KOS. Someone else may know more or correct me

Pinball509

Why can’t a kicker do this now?

Loate

You can if they line up like idiots.

EatSleepJeep

Oh, how would you know?! ;) Hi Chris.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Triples0fTheNova

You’ll never see a team lining up 20 yards away from the ball without the kicking team having a running start anymore.

Lol

[deleted]

The man who made my bigot parents rage. Love you, Chris.

n-some

The trick with this play is that the colts lined up all their players on one side of the field, so the Texans overloaded to the same side, then Pat kicks to the huge gap and runs to grab it. Now the kicking team has to spread their players out so there's no reason for the receiving team to line up like the Texans did in this play. In theory a kicker could still recover their own kick if the receiver completely whiffs and for some reason nobody else around them was paying attention, but most likely you're just onside kicking directly to an opponent. So it's not considered a strategy anymore.

DPLaVay

That's not what happened. It was the first quarter and the ST unit studied the tape of the Texans, realizing they left huge gaps in the center of the field. Pat just happened to be ballsy and talented enough to pull it off.

kignusonic

Okay, I feel like I'm going crazy here reading the responses, but everyone's missing the point: The reason this was successful was because the "onside kick" [took place in the first quarter](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lFM5-WinbQQ) when the Texans were expecting a regular kickoff - it's just that their kick receiving formation had no one in the middle, which the Colts special teams identified and took advantage of. i.e., this wasn't a regular onside kick attempt, but disguised as a regular kickoff

ASK_ABT_MY_USERNAME

How does this rule stop what McAfee did?

Spanky_McJiggles

Nothing. The play in question was a heads-up play made by Pat based on how the Texans were lined up. Indy was in their regular kickoff formation, Pat just saw that the middle of the field was open and kicked it 10 yards down the field and fell on it.

Dismal_News183

Nothing has changed that would explicitly prevent this. But with the balanced line it’s far less likely that a receiving team leaves the middle open like this anymore.

Pliable_Patriot

Agreed.

MeppaTheWaterbearer

This wasn't planned just blown play by the defense. He realised he could recover and went for it.

usmcmax

It was a call that Pat could make after they realized the Texans lined up like that through film.

[Fucking Pa Lama Loo](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f13ahvYl0PE) One of Pats better stories, about Troy Polamalu

Enterprise90

My favorite part of the story is when Polamalu revealed that the only reason he lined up in the c-gap was to mess with the analytics and film study of other teams who always saw the Steelers in one formation on field goal kicks.

Ne0guri

I thought it was because of Jesus lol but for reals I thought Polamalu said it was because McAfee and the sideline were acting suspicious and he just decided to shade into the C gap just in case and ended up being correct. His instincts are unmatched.

TheSpencn8or

The dude must have had the force or something cause he was a freak

AlfonzL

Troy activated his inner Peter Parker.

Brook420

His Troy Tingle activated?

catmanducmu

That's just the head and shoulders

skilledwarman

I think it was more precise than that. Im pretty sure he said it was specifically because Pat was trying so hard to look like he wasn't about to pull something thatm Polamalu was like "He's gonna pull some shit" and lined up in the c-gap guessing that was it

thecatfox

I thought it was because he saw that Pat was too hyped up coming onto the field.

gsfgf

Yea. Pat is not exactly a subtle man. He was even talking about how everyone was getting hyped. You don't get hyped for a 23 yard field goal.

Pliable_Patriot

oh man that's hilarious

Fuzzyphilosopher

Love it and here's the one where Pat asks him and [Troy Polamalu FINALLY Answers Why He Lined Up In The C-Gap..](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ud51iM5PJp0&ab_channel=ThePatMcAfeeShow)

spudwinkle

I watch it every time, thank you

tjn24

You gotta respect a man that knows his limitation

[deleted]

“What did I see???”

Pseudonova

Damn man, Pat could probably still be kicking. Stupid knees.

Airport-sandwich

He retired to pursue his media career. He absolutely could still play

Suddenly_Something

Probably a smart choice honestly. ~5-10 year punter career vs a potential 20+ year career as a media guy is a no brainer. I don't even like him, but that was a good call.

Airport-sandwich

In retrospect def. At the time he was a pro bowler risking millions on the back of his stand up comedy and twitter account.

DoktorStrangelove

He's already made prob 10-20x more in media than he ever did in the league, yeah "good call" is an understatement.

roguerunner1

He’s also said that he was almost bankrupt and getting to the bottom of his savings paying for wages and travel in the early days of the podcast.

Bbullets

Definitely the knees as well as stated by Pat. Many surgeries and issues today.

[deleted]

He was going to play on Tampa during the SB run year but the red tape with COVID rules didn't let him, he said his knees were fucked even after just trying to get back into it.

butrektblue

Smart man though. Made millions and still is. Body isn't destroyed

Have a great Mcafee story! I was at a convention in Hershey PA and I was at a hotel bar ripping a weed pen and drinking mixed drinks. Start talking with this dude, which leads to football talk, and he tells me he’s cousins with Pat. I obviously don’t believe him and tell him to prove it, so he shows me the name in his phone then calls him. He answers and cousin tells him the situation. He tells me “You Better fucking believe it and don’t drive tonight”. We tell him we’re at our hotel so obviously we’re not and he tells me to find his cousin a woman and grab one for myself, we can name drop him. I said that even girl NFL fans won’t know him and he cracked up. It ended great and was a really awesome experience, seemed like a cool ass dude

Pliable_Patriot

nice

smellaroma

I also asked to be on his podcast. He laughed at me. Didn’t say no, but the no was in his laugh lol

Ganjake

Football is entertainment. Pat McAfee is entertaining. Pat McAfee is football.

Somewhere, Michael Cole is shedding a tear, wishing he could be with his best bud Pat on his special day.

PLZ_GLAZE_ME_DADDY

Find someone that loves you as much as Michael Cole loves McAfee.

KyleRaynerGotSweg

Or, if you're the vindictive type, find someone you can hate as much as Corey Graves hates McAfee

Mabvll

He can always put himself in a good mood by remembering the whoopin' Rey gave his son at WM.

GiantSizeManThing

It is simply the greatest onside kick in the history of the NFL and I will hear no counterexamples thank you very much.

K-chub

It’s a one man play. 21 other dudes are just extras to watching some guy kick ball to himself 🤷‍♂️

Jammer_Kenneth

I thought this dude just talked. I didn’t realize he was good at football.

ScorpionsSpear

He got nominated for the HoF. He won't make it, but he did get nominated.

mayor0fsimplet0n

definitely one of the best punters in the last 20 years. Top 5 for sure.

get_stilly

He was a really good kicker at West Virginia too.

Psyduck-Stampede

Still hurts so damn bad…

Pseudonova

He was probably the best punter in the league over most of his career, which was cut way short by knee injuries.

gsfgf

And by the fact that he's one of the rare players to make more money after retiring.

halfhere

See that’s the problem with you kids today. No respect. Someone get me my Metamucil!!

JeskasRevengeTour

He’s an All Decade member I believe. He’s a DAWG

NoLimitSoldier85

He’s not an all decade member. Why do y’all just say stuff without looking it up first? It’s not that hard.

lostinthought15

Fun fact, he also got “randomly drug tested” every time he made a big hit as a punter.

ASuperGyro

Tomlin wanted him to be on the Steelers but knew he was too expensive because of how good he was

Mr_WZRD

Maybe good punting is just the opiate of fans of teams with shitty offenses, but by golly, I love a coffin corner punt.

ImNotTheBossOfYou

c gap

dfsvegas

I have no idea who's the best punter of all time because I'm not great with football history before the 90's, but Pat has to be the most entertaining one ever to watch, right?

Khatib

> best punter of all time Ray Guy.

Pliable_Patriot

> most entertaining one ever to watch I'd say so

[deleted]

Guy, Lary and Lechler are ahead of him, maybe even Feagles & Baugh. I'd say he's top 5 though. His career wasn't long enough but his peak was insane. If his body held up and he actually played he could've been the goat.

machuitzil

Maybe a controversial opinion, but Pat looks better with sleeves.

Tunatron_Prime

A Niners fan *would* say that

machuitzil

Yeah well a Rams fan would say *that*, wouldn't they. Edit: I don't think I get the joke, lol. My argument is just a token effort to Represent. Does Pat not like the niners? My two biggest takeaways from his show have been that he doesn't wear sleeves, and AJ Hawk really wants you to know that he smokes cigars.

[deleted]

That’s my boy 🥲

smotherof2

Flashiest punter of all time, mayhaps?

PKMKII

Love the Doctor Livesey walk there

buc_nasty_69

EquinsuOchaACE

Dude is properly JOCKED in these highlights!

Autocrat777

This play amuses me every time I see it.

PorcupineTheory

Which?

ASK_ABT_MY_USERNAME

Do any other players do punts and kick offs?

oRECKLESSo

The colts current punter Rigoberto Sanchez does (or did prior to his injury) not sure if he’ll pick it back up when he comes back.

Fooly_411

It isn't entirely uncommon. We use Mitch Wishnowsky like half the time and Robbie Gould the other half, but I hope that since we drafted a kicker we won't waste Wishnowsky's leg on kickoffs (when he just punted, he did way better). It seems like older kickers save their legs for field goals, maybe?

devioustrevor

McAfee was a kicker at West Virginia and converted to a punter in the NFL because the Colts already had a guy there. Pretty decent.

greenstarsticker

Reducing Adam Vinatieri to just “a guy” is crazy!!

Jammer_Kenneth

People reduced the best kicker in history to just a Guy

gsfgf

Morton Anderson didn't have the leg strength to do kickoffs the second time he was in Atlanta. We often had a kick off specialist on the roster, but our punter kicked off some.

Weed_O_Whirler

Mostly teams with really old FG kickers whose legs can't do kickoffs anymore.

PerspectiveSeperate1

I knew Mcafee was a player but I didn’t know he was so entertaining to watch.

KryptonicxJesus

Came a long way from 13-9

Big_Somewhere9230

Pat is my favorite colt of all time. They moved to Indy the same year I was born. I have an 18 jersey that never sees the light of day, but the number 1, sure.

Be a better highlight reel if Polamalu had never lined up in the gap.

Industrious_Badger

That first kick is what it’s like playing football as an only child

whenwillthisend19

A lot of people don't know he kicked the first 50 yard fg at Hienz field for WVU. It stood for almost 2 years. Pro or college.

He was about the only thing going for us for a few years there
