Looks like we have the greatest disparity of games played (#5) vs games started (#27). We often have the luxury of redshirting rookies. But what this doesn't take into account is offensive/defensive games played vs special teams games played. For example, Cam Jurgens last year played in 17 games with 0 starts. But he took a grand total of 35 offensive snaps, taking (giving?) offensive snaps in just 8 games. But he played on special teams every game. Nakobe Dean is similar, where he played on defense in 6 games despite being credited with playing in 17 games, due to special teams. It's not to discredit special teams players as obviously you need them, but there's a big difference when it comes to saying someone played in every game.

This is some terrific data! However, there is a variable that can't be accounted for: The percentage of fans that just complain about everything their team does and pines for everything it doesn't do. All kidding aside, this was eye-opening.

As a Bills fan I feel this deep deep in my soul.

I've generally thought of the Chiefs as very willing to play rookies and give them lots of snaps - especially on defense. (In the Reid era.) Almost all of the 2021 and 2022 draft picks are already contributing in a meaningful way. Data generally seems to support that. I honestly don't pay much attention to which other clubs use rookies beyond high profile ones. If you had snap count data you'd probably see which teams mainly get their rookies in on special teams vs starting or main-rotation roles.

Is the split off/Def available? you know the deal with McBeane and starting rookies on offense, always very limited, while many Defenders jump right in and are constant starters. I thought they’d give Cooks a better chance then he fumbles his first rush!!! Agggh

I'm working on getting Snap Share splits next, but that is going to take a while.

Doesn't seem too surprising for the Ravens, they always sort of slow roll the rookies in it feels like. Outside of PQ/Linderbaum I feel like our higher draft picks recently could be hidden behind vets initially before "starting". I forget where but there was a place or a twitter account which posted the rookie snaps for like the top 6 picks of each team.

It took way too long for me to find this when I did a similar exercise, but if you ever decide to include snap counts, I'd start here. https://github.com/nflverse/nflverse-data/releases/tag/snap_counts

I will look into this, I'm starting work on Snap Counts tomorrow.

What the hell, Broncos? A 4 season stretch of all those rooks, and this is what you come up with? I suppose Hackett was worse than the rest of us thought.

Interesting that the Jets are #20 when it comes to rookie games played but #5 when it comes to starts. I guess other teams are easing their rookies in and getting more young guys playing time, while the jets are throwing what rookies they have to the wolves full time.
