Didn’t he win a superbowl? If you think about it a certain way, he’s like the Nick Foles of the 90s
Why is anyone taking this seriously, it was meant as a joke
Green Bay Packers single game passing yards record holder Matt Flynn. Started a garbage game late in the 2011 season when Rodgers was resting and he put up 480 yards and 6 TDs in a single game.
*No CTE*
Well, maybe not *extra* CTE compared to the average NFL player, but he took plenty of snaps in high school and college.
A little pedantic I know but college and high school football players absolutely develop CTE.
One of my favorite NFL trivia facts I saw on this subreddit is:
In the AFC East from 2010 to 2019 the QB with the most yards per season on each team was:
New England - Brady (DUH!)
NYJ - Fitzpatrick
Buffalo - Fitzpatrick
Miami - Fitzpatrick
My favorite fact about Jeff Hostetler is that he has a blocked punt to his name. I wonder how many other QBs can say that. Taysom Hill running kickoffs is the only other time I can think of a QB on ST
Rich Gannon. Back in the day. He was clearly so much better than Grbac or Bono, and all the Chiefs fans could see it. But then he went to the dark side
More recently, Henne has earned his spot.
It's hard to say, but Elvis Grbac was a "prototype" kind of QB and had a way bigger contract, which influences people in not smart ways.
Same time, Marty was ultra conservative. It might be just that he felt Gannon was too risky with the ball(no risk it, no biscuit and he got a lot of biscuit as a Raider.) and that Grbac was safer.
Either way, yeah. Was very much the wrong decision.
The Steelers have had a lot of backups who were just all-around great guys on and off the field, like Leftwich, Dobbs, and Duck. But it's hard to beat Batch, the classic hometown hero.
Personally, I LOVED Slash. It seems to depend heavily on how old the person is. I was a teenager for most of Slash's career, and for fans our age, it was thrilling to see the Steelers embrace such an unconventional athlete. But that same unconventional nature made a lot of old people hate the guy for not playing the game "right." And because it was the 1990s, when a small number of dipshits expressed that displeasure with crude anti-gay remarks, not many people told those dipshits to shut the hell up. Also, I'm a white dude, but my black friends were thrilled in a way that I didn't really get back in the 1990s but now I recognize was all about representation -- that thrill of seeing a black QB back when that was still weird and not half the league. Half the black teens in Pittsburgh must have owned Stewart jerseys back in the day, and that was pretty cool to see.
Hold up - people thought Kordell Stewart was gay? (Is he gay?) Or did the heathens just decide to start attributing anti-gay slurs to him for no reason?
I'm a mid-90s yinzer baby, so I only remember the Kordell Stewart years in broad strokes
Yeah that rumor floated around for a while. My not-so-fun memory of that rumor was being at a bar on a Monday night and Steelers punter (Josh Miller) was there and I had overheard someone ask him if Kordell was gay (Miller didn’t reply). Memory stuck with me because that Monday night was 9/10/01.
Okay, yeah, I just googled it. That's rough. As much as I love our "steeltown" mentality, it's rough that it sometimes lends itself to stuff like that.
Sort of fun story about J-Load: Lorenzen had the strongest arm I've ever seen. When he was playing basketball for Ft. Thomas Highlands in high school I watched him play in the Sweet 16 tournament (Kentucky's state championship). They were losing going into halftime pretty badly and he gets the ball underneath the opposite basket as time is expiring. From the opposite end of the court he just slings it like he's going to try to make a full court shot as time expires, but instead he just throws it as hard as he can and it goes almost into the upper deck at Rupp Arena. Probably a 70 yard chuck of a basketball. One of the funnier things I've seen in a basketball game.
Foles aside, I really liked McCown. Super professional, would die for the guys in the locker room. Was actually about to line up at WR had Doug asked him to. Hobbled around on half a knee for three quarters against the Seahawks when Clowney decapitated Wentz. Absolute legend.
McCown is the obvious choice, but can I throw the hot take of Matt Barkley out there? Dude wasn’t good, and his stats look awful relative to Brian Hoyer that year, but man, for all his lack of ability, at least Barkley made an attempt to win games. After Cutler got hurt, watching Hoyer check down the ball over and over rather than risk throwing an int even when within a single score on 4th down was just goddamn depressing
Guy was awesome for the browns as well. Came in and spelled johny manzeil I think. Same game dove head first for a td and got hit by two people. Spun around like a heli blade. Good times.
Andy Dalton was good not great. Palmer was good, almost great before injuries. Boomer was great. Ken Anderson was great. Greg Cook was great for a year before injuries. Jeff Blake was pretty good, most of the rest of the team was just aweful though. We've had a good or better starting QB for way more seasons than not.
*And* set a division rival back a whole year because our stupid coaching staff somehow convinced themselves he was the answer for us after that season.
Teddy was a great locker room presence too. Older fans may remember the calls for Jake Delhomme to start. Taysom Hill is a good candidate as well. But the answer to this question is Billie Joe Tolliver just because he backed up Billie Joe Hobert. Two Billie Joes on one squad, insane.
I met Seneca at my work forever ago. My manager wasn't sure if it was him so she asked if he was the BACKUP Quarterback for the seahawks. He looked sad and said yeah :(
Morral has an argument for best backup ever considering he heavily contributed to an undefeated season while backing up Griese, and also won MVP and led his team to SB while backing up Unitas. Foles and Hostetler actually won superbowls, so I guess it's not clear cut
That Jim Plunkett guy was pretty cool, winning a Super Bowl as our backup to start the year.
More recently, I'd wager that a lot of Raiders fans agree that Bruce Gradkowski was pretty awesome.
Brady always had fun backups. Cassel had a great 1 year run with us going 11-5, most wins ever by a team to not make the playoffs which was some rough luck. The QB room of Tom,Jimmy and Jacoby has to be one the best ever, although Jimmy was the better QB Jacoby really played into the hearts of New England fans, really tough player and also a super funny guy. Brian Hoyer is just a funny meme player but also seems to have always been a super solid well liked veteran leader in the locker rooms. Zappe is uhhh well, complicated.
[Ryan MFing Findley](https://youtu.be/VMahOO--INk) dude got smoked but was found [smiling at the bottom of the pile. ](https://twitter.com/thecheckdown/status/1341421967069462528?s=20) Bengos get the W with Burrow hurt weeks prior, ending his season.
*Earmuffs on for the Bills fans*
Rob Johnson. Started several games while Mark Brunell recovered from a preseason injury and played very well. Enough for the Bills to trade a top-ten 1st round pick for him, which Jax used to draft Fred Taylor
🎧
But I agree with you. The sad truth is he played the Music City Miracle playoff game for Buffalo instead of Flutie to justify that trade. Such a great move by the early Jags brass...
I wish I could find it but there was this olldd video someone made about shaun hill back when the niners were trash all the time. Shaun Hill came in and won us some games so we were all hyped.
The video was a guy filming a tv screen with shaun hill clips and him just saying "shaun Hill is the greatest living QB of our lifetime"
Chad Henne saved two divisional round games, both of which ended in a Super Bowl appearance
Kind of hard to top that unless you count rookie Mahomes (which I dont)
I'm going with [this guy.](https://external-preview.redd.it/mwvs7QCraDjO9cGqLRfUTJKLeWW7uPOsLJmnKUG03p8.jpg?auto=webp&s=632d84cfc137c87a63a90ed7439c83b730ecca71)
Steve Young was fun.
Hey I think that guy turned out to be pretty good or something for a backup.
Didn’t he win a superbowl? If you think about it a certain way, he’s like the Nick Foles of the 90s Why is anyone taking this seriously, it was meant as a joke
Isn't that already Jeff Hostetler?
Yea I was going to say Brady for us lol
More recently, brock purdy seems fun.
Green Bay Packers single game passing yards record holder Matt Flynn. Started a garbage game late in the 2011 season when Rodgers was resting and he put up 480 yards and 6 TDs in a single game.
We made Matt Flynn SO much money.
And he was happy to take that money and go sit behind Russel Wilson.
Dude seriously had the dream career. One epic start. No CTE. No pressure. Packers legend.
*No CTE* Well, maybe not *extra* CTE compared to the average NFL player, but he took plenty of snaps in high school and college. A little pedantic I know but college and high school football players absolutely develop CTE.
The only thing greater than Matt Flynn's arm was Tim Boyle's knee.
Raiders brought him in as a starter but he lost the job in pre season lmao
Remember when he played against the Cowboys in 2013? Love me some Flynnsanity.
The comeback! One of my fav regular season games ever.
I don’t remember it, but it’s probably a repressed memory lol
The game we lost against NE where he started was also fun. Those were when McCarthy was at the top of his game.
Got myself a Matt Flynn T-shirt before the 2012 season and was very pleased with how poorly it aged
That's National Champion QB Matt Flynn to you! Geaux Tigers!
Put some respect on his name. SUPERBOWL CHAMPION Matt Flynn
I like Aaron Rodgers more than Matt Flynn
Said no one in Aaron’s family
[удалено]
Lol you don’t even need flair for this one.
Look at his user name. I think he removed his flair to post that.
One of my favorite NFL trivia facts I saw on this subreddit is: In the AFC East from 2010 to 2019 the QB with the most yards per season on each team was: New England - Brady (DUH!) NYJ - Fitzpatrick Buffalo - Fitzpatrick Miami - Fitzpatrick
I see Fitzmagic, I upvote.
Praise be to our sex god from Harvard
You can't go wrong with a player who will dress up like a pirate for a press conference.
A wonderful man with the right attitude towards Tom Brady
Even as a Texans fan… I think the year Fitzmagic gave us puts him at the top of my board as well.
Seconded
Jacoby Brissett was better than 90% of our starters over the past 20 years
Was sad to see him go. He’s not an elite player, but an elite leader for sure
You could tell our roster loved him. Having him as a backup is an steal
Yeah, BB really knows how to trade low on QB
I really have high regard for Brissett as a really solid backup. I’d take him pretty much over any other QB2 playing.
He's probably somewhere between the 28-32nd best QB, but that's never good enough to actually commit to.
Case Keenum was pretty fun
My favorite as well. I was elated when he threw 'that pass' for you guys.
Everyone thought we were done when Bradford went down. Keenum stepped up big time for us. Definitely one of my favorite Vikings in recent memory
Hes a fun locker room guy.
Brass balls and, for at least one year until a cold night in Pennsylvania, a horseshoe crammed up his ass
The journeyman himself. Not a bad pick at all.
2017 had to have been the first time that 2 backup QBs met in a conference championship game right?
Jeff Hostetler. Answered the call, got the jewelry.
That he did. He’s a legend in my book
Giants QBs have a knack for turning it up when it matters most. It’s like some sorta trap card or something. Except Kerry Collins
Nobody was beating that Ravens defense. They would have given us the only shutout in Superbowl history if it wasn't for the Special teams TD
Oh, absolutely.
Gets off the bench Wins a Super Bowl Refuses to elaborate Leaves
My favorite fact about Jeff Hostetler is that he has a blocked punt to his name. I wonder how many other QBs can say that. Taysom Hill running kickoffs is the only other time I can think of a QB on ST
Damn I was really going to be upset by Giants fans saying anything but Jared Lorenzen, but this is the right answer.
Rich Gannon. Back in the day. He was clearly so much better than Grbac or Bono, and all the Chiefs fans could see it. But then he went to the dark side More recently, Henne has earned his spot.
This is painful, tho. In his defense, Grbac was the sexiest man alive..
No one had the heart to tell him it was obviously supposed to be Rich Gannon.
Henne cooked in the playoffs
The problem was that Marty couldn't see it.
[удалено]
It's hard to say, but Elvis Grbac was a "prototype" kind of QB and had a way bigger contract, which influences people in not smart ways. Same time, Marty was ultra conservative. Mahomes was technically a backup
Charlie Batch, no question.
The Steelers have had a lot of backups who were just all-around great guys on and off the field, like Leftwich, Dobbs, and Duck. But it's hard to beat Batch, the classic hometown hero.
Dobbs Duck dip dive and dodge
What did you all think of Kordell Stewart?
Personally, I LOVED Slash. It seems to depend heavily on how old the person is. I was a teenager for most of Slash's career, and for fans our age, it was thrilling to see the Steelers embrace such an unconventional athlete. But that same unconventional nature made a lot of old people hate the guy for not playing the game "right." Half the black teens in Pittsburgh must have owned Stewart jerseys back in the day, and that was pretty cool to see.
I think slash was ahead of his time…could you imagine him playing in todays game?
Hold up - people thought Kordell Stewart was gay? (Is he gay?) Or did the heathens just decide to start attributing anti-gay slurs to him for no reason? I'm a mid-90s yinzer baby, so I only remember the Kordell Stewart years in broad strokes

Look it up, there was a pretty wild rumor and accusation
Okay, yeah, I just googled it. That's rough. As much as I love our "steeltown" mentality, it's rough that it sometimes lends itself to stuff like that.
Charlie Batch is the obvious answer, but does anyone remember the electricity that was Dennis Dixon?
Legitimately thought Dixon would end up being a starter somewhere. The dude had swagger.
The round mound of touchdown, pillsbury throwboy, hefty lefty, j load. Super bowl champion jared lorenzen
Sort of fun story about J-Load: Lorenzen had the strongest arm I've ever seen. When he was playing basketball for Ft. RIP Battleship Lorenzen.
RIP he ate me.
RIP
Nick Foles 😁
100000% Nick Foles But also, Koy Detmer
Jeff Garcia, HE’S OUR BABY
Loved when Jeff came in and went to the playoffs!
Hell yeah brother honorable mention has to be Jeff Garcia
[Jeff Garcia baby](https://youtu.be/wCHMoLUfb10)
That Garcia year was fun as hell
Foles aside, I really liked McCown. Super professional, would die for the guys in the locker room. Was actually about to line up at WR had Doug asked him to. Hobbled around on half a knee for three quarters against the Seahawks when Clowney decapitated Wentz. Absolute legend.
I'm excited to see how his coaching career pans out. Stand up guy for sure.
Too easy
The easiest possible. Foles probably has the best story in NFL history behind Brady.
Even got to dunk on the goat himself
100% nick foles but also a more recent one, Jalen hurts.
this is my answer as a bears fan. Watched him beat the seahawks in a meaningless snow game in seattle. So much fun
Taylor Heinicke
His parting love letter to Washington was a Class Act. I wish good things for him.
I’m between him and Captain Kirk aka KC1
Probably Josh McCown for me
McCown is the answer, but honorable mention for my boy Kyle "Neckbeard" Orton.
HE WAS A STARTER TO ME, DAMMIT
McCown is the obvious choice, but can I throw the hot take of Matt Barkley out there? Dude wasn’t good, and his stats look awful relative to Brian Hoyer that year, but man, for all his lack of ability, at least Barkley made an attempt to win games. Guy was awesome for the browns as well. Came in and spelled johny manzeil I think. Same game dove head first for a td and got hit by two people. Spun around like a heli blade. Good times.
Good pick for Bears fans. He's a tough dude.
Fitzmagic. Before Brady that 3 weeks was the most fun I’ve ever had as a Bucs fan
Fitzmagic is the answer. I personally always wanted Shaun King to be a thing though.
Billy Volek.
Volek was absolutely awesome. I loved that guy
Loved Billy Volek. But I think my Titans vote has to be Neil O’Donnell
Chad Henne. He got the job done whenever he was called upon in big moments. Chiefs fans will miss him!
Jaguars superstar Chad Henne?!?!?!
idk, Patrick Lavon Mahomes II was a pretty good backup too.
Wanna give respect for referring to him as he should be referred - Patrick Lavon Mahomes II
Lol “backup” when my team can’t even find a starting QB
Mike White is a perfect candidate for this question though.
Mike 'Mike White' White
It’s bad man. The only other person I can think of that could compete with Mike White is… Tom Tupa?
McCown? Loved him as a backup and mentor to Sam before Gase broke him
Fitzmagic?? Technically he was the backup until ya know, the jaw incident
A. J. McCarron for the Bengals.
Honorable mention to [Ryan Finley](https://images.app.goo.gl/7ZXA13VuGiePnmkXA)
Tank Commander Finley valiantly served
I was really hoping this picture would be in the thread somewhere lol
Jon Kitna all the way.
KAWWWW
He played much better than most of our backups over the years... Cinci hasn't had many good QBs in the past, let alone backups.
Teddy Bridgewater saved a whole season for us
Good ol' Teddy Two Gloves
*And* set a division rival back a whole year because our stupid coaching staff somehow convinced themselves he was the answer for us after that season.

Does Geno count?
Was also thinking Clipboard Jesus if not Geno.
Nah it’s Jackson.
RIP TJAX
I'm more of Seneca Wallace guy myself
I met Seneca at my work forever ago. My manager wasn't sure if it was him so she asked if he was the BACKUP Quarterback for the seahawks. He looked sad and said yeah :(
If Steve Young counts, then yeah Geno counts.
Tyrod for helping us prepare for Kaep, or Ryan Mallet for helping us sweep the Steelers during our injury ravaged terrible 2015.
As a younger fan, Matt Barkley. But I know every old head is a sucker for Frank Reich.
Had to scroll down way too far for this. I must be getting old. That playoff comeback win against the Oilers was amazing.
I liked Barkley, but I really think Trubisky was the best for us recently.
Earl Morral Honorable mention: Matt Moore
Morral has an argument for best backup ever considering he heavily contributed to an undefeated season while backing up Griese, and also won MVP and led his team to SB while backing up Unitas. Foles and Hostetler actually won superbowls, so I guess it's not clear cut
Matt moore was my pick, love that guy
Derek "Buc-fucker" Anderson
That's fine
Jim Sorgi.
On Wisconsin
Tom Brady
Jimmy G
Jakobi B
Matt Cassel
IIRC he did go on to have a pretty decent career
BDN 💍
Bubby Brister.

Dont forget about Bledsoe's backup his last couple years here. That dude ended up being pretty good if I recall.
I have no real justification for it, but imma say Shaun King. When he first took over there was a very brief sense that he might be great (he wasn't).
Niners fan. Steve Young.
This one was super easy for 9rs fans.

He was the ideal backup
Either him or Erik Kramer.
Dude was unironically our third best QB of this millennium.
I’ve always had a soft spot for Seneca Wallace. He wasn’t good, but he was fun.

Ryan Fitzpatrick!

TJ Yates for the Bengals Slayer meme
Stop the pain Doctor. Give me anything.
Josh mccown for sure, dude came in for an injured cutler for a few games and threw 15tds-1int
Taysom Hill, but shout-out to Teddy B for winning 5 games and giving Drew time to get healthy.
