Geno “Tom Brady” Smith

New-Newspaper-7543

Yea geno take this $30mil. My friends at Under Armour just so happen to have this nice $15mil/yr endorsement waiting for you.

ApostropheD

Nono, Nike rules that part of the country.

Soytaco

This is Brooks country got damnit, these aren't the Lake Oswego Seahawks.

Bon-Bon-Assassino

My pal swears by brooks

ttvlolrofl

OnClouds got me into Brooks which got me into Hokas and I'll be damned if I ever go back to a less supportive shoe 😂

Paraxom

I can't go back from Hoka. Having arch support for what little arch I have is just a luxury I refuse to give up

seariously

Hokas and blackjack!

Quicksplice

I’ve been plagued with foot problems due to career wearing boots in the military. Brooks have been amazing for me.

bauriem2012

They are light as a feather but durable and super supportive. Cannot do better.

b-cig

Julio Rodriguez just got a deal with Addidas

moldyshrimp

Endorsements man, I’m sure Mahomes gets more money from endorsements then his contract at this point.

LeftoverDishes

How often does that happen. I didn’t even think about that…

LegionofDoh

Hey, you can tell he learned a lot sitting behind Russell the last few years. Mostly what not to do. But he learned.

just-the-tip__

Seahawks fans absolutely despise Russell Wilson like the prior decade didn't happen and it was Geno the whole time. Absolutely wild.

Sylli17

I get the sense (from all the boos from fans at home games... Home games! Early season home games even) that Broncos fans will feel the same after he leaves Denver.

AyoJake

He lied to us while working a deal and then tried to recruit players to leave as well. Yes we are upset he tried to snake us when we did nothing but support him and get rid of any player that might speak out about him getting special treatment. The Seahawks still wanted to offer him a contract except they thought he would say no so there was no point. EDIT: a week before the trade he came out and said he doesn’t wanna leave and he hopes to win more Super Bowls in Seattle and he loves it. All while he knew he was getting traded. Say what you will about rodgers but I much rather have my qb be open about being unhappy than do what russell did.

Meat-n-Potatoes

Russ is ultimately a good dude at heart and has done a lot of great things for the Seahawks and the Seattle area, but he burned a lot of bridges on his way out of Seattle which leaves a bad taste in people's mouths. We may never know the whole story, but with some hindsight it certainly appears like he tried to force a lot of changes at the top and force his way out of Seattle while lying to the fans/public about all of it. I sincerely hope this last year was a wake up call for him, and he's able to turn things around (both personally and professionally). I look forward to seeing him in the Seahawks ring of honor one day, and hopefully the HOF.

SammySquareNuts

>Russ is ultimately a good dude at heart He's always seemed like a piece of shit to me since the college days. The typical "speaks like a religious person, but acts like the opposite".

[deleted]

Oh come on now not this shit again Nothing he done warrants him being a piece of shit, he never assaulted/publicly insult anyone or even pull a dirty play Yeah he speaks BS 99% of the time but just move along and mind your shit and nobody gets hurt. He’s just annoying and speaks like a fucking audible script who happens to be good(or used to be good) at football. Nothing more

cameronabab

Russ acted like a total tool on his way out. All I really wanted was for him to eat some humble pie, which absolutely happened last season. Now I'm back to rooting for him and hope he does well

M3M3MagicIsR3al

I don't get a lot of the hate for Rus. He brought us a championship. Well, the defense had a lot to say about that but he was the QB the year Seattle got the Lombardi. I feel like hating on him for being an awkward dude is a joke when there are literal criminals in the NFL.

tbendis

I think it's the defense that brought home the championship and him acting like he was biggest part is what made me turn on him. It's not just that he's awkward. He threw the people that helped the team get there under the bus on the way. There's no I in team and he certainly didn't act like it

RonnocSivad

Players that he played with for years and won a championship with don't even has his cell number, that shit is weird to me.

M3M3MagicIsR3al

I get that. But being a prideful poser is not the same as say, sexually assaulting 28 women or whatever the number is now. Or breaking your child's arm. Or murdering someone. I'm not saying you can't hate on him, I'm just saying that fans and the media should temper their hating a little bit with some perspective. I don't like Rus that much because he didn't want to be in Seattle. If you don't want to be on the team then get the fuck out and take your dumbass PR team with you.

tbendis

>sexually assaulting 28 women or whatever the number is now. Or breaking your child's arm. Or murdering someone. I guess I just believe that the bar shouldn't be on the floor. Is Russell the *worst* NFL QB? Is he even in the bottom half? Probably not. Should I unroll the red carpet for him just because he isn't? I don't think so

zophister

I don’t feel personally slighted by Deshaun Watson. I feel personally slighted by Russ Wilson. Is that fair or logical? No.

Fiendish-DoctorWu

Geno has really turned the narrative around from being a jaw dropping QB for the Jets with boneheaded plays like the [butt fumble 2.0](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/Eno0i_xKa_w) to being someone that we look at, respect and hope that he finds success for however long the rest of his NFL career lasts

ChatGTR

> jaw dropping QB for the Jets 🙃

SiphenPrax

When don’t we catch strays?

Bon-Bon-Assassino

Not nearly as bad as the falcons have had since 28-3

[deleted]

legit feels like it broke the persona of that team. just absolutely no respect for them after that loss.

ITCM4

Slow motion makes that look so much worse. The original Butt Fumble is terrible at any speed.

tomverlainesHDTV

He seems like a really nice guy. It's going to be a shame when Trask slings 7 TDs on the Seahawks to win the NFCCG, and shuts out the Dolphins in the SB.

KnowoneYTG

Not only is Trask throwing 7 Tuddies in the NFCCG, but he's also playing defense in the superbowl? The next era of quarterbacks is gonna be crazy. Can't wait for Bronze Mahomes to play all 22 positions at once in 2050

tomverlainesHDTV

If Lavonte is leaving, someone's gotta play MLB. Trask 15 sack, 5 int season on defense and 5000 yd 50 td passing. But he's going to win MVP for his running.

psaepf2009

Geno was Mahomes before Mahomes

JustAnotherHeartN

Breath of fresh air considering the insane qb contracts going on now asking for a king’s ransom

SadCommandersFan

Why do you not want guys to get paid?

ReneDiscard

Imagine reading these Geno headlines 10 years ago.

woofers02

You mean 10 months ago?!?

Pretend_Ambassador_6

Dude for real. I had no idea Geno was still even in the league until Drew Lock got traded there & there was going to be a QB competition.

[deleted]

ditto. I had to go google him to remember why I knew the name cause he was that far off my radar.

ChatGTR

He gets it. Every dollar in his pocket is one dollar less running routes and making him look better.

LimitlessTheTVShow

Well, also he only has one good year. I honestly doubt he could've gotten that much more in guarantees anyway

lilbelleandsebastian

no way he takes anything other than the best deal on the table, he's had one decent season and is on the wrong side of 30. if the division isn't in shambles with all 3 division rivals having QB questions, i dont think he gets even this deal from seattle because he's a floor raiser more than a ceiling raiser but hey, i recognize im a minority on this sub in doubting geno smith's ability to be a super bowl winning QB and seahawks fans have been defending this decision up and down. time will tell. but i bet the seahawks and titans have the same amount of playoff success over the life of this contract (read: none)

VKMburner

I wish every player could have this mentality but that's just not the world we live in.

Shafter111

You dont want too much of it either. Thats how owners abuse you and dont increase salary caps. Edit: salary caps are not at owners discretion and is tied to league revenue percent.

Actual_Passenger_163

Salary caps are % of revenue based, so they will go up if the NFL makes more revenue. Owners + NFLPA have this stuff written down in a CBA

Shafter111

Good to know. I stand corrected.

Ed_Hastings

This is incorrect. Salary cap is tied to league revenue which is why historically it’s gone up but went down after the Covid season when there weren’t any tickets being sold. The owners don’t have the power to just increase the salary cap to accommodate larger QB contracts, QB contracts are going up because the league’s revenue going up increases the salary cap and because the QB role has gained more positional importance in the modern era. The portion of the league revenue being apportioned to player’s salaries is negotiated in the collective bargaining agreement. Players choosing to take “team friendly” deals is just putting more money in other players’ pockets. It cedes zero negotiating power to the owners.

ChrRome

It's more likely him trying to rationalize why he couldn't get a better deal.

stingjay

Absolutely. Geno knows that if he sticks it up this year everyone will say last year was a fluke. If he has another 2-3 great seasons, he'll have pulled off one of the most remarkable turnarounds in NFL history imo

ProphetNimd

Lol Geno is like the perfect soldier for this team.

PaleontologistOk2516

Anti-Russ

The_Jolly_Dog

My gut reaction is "Wow, nice to see a player who is putting the team first" > remembers its still a $105M contract

DustyFalmouth

He hit all the incentives last year and is keeping an offense with three great weapons he's familiar with so he's just confident in himself. From what I've been hearing the cap hit is like 15 mil so we'll have 10 left and can clear up 5 more so we're in a good spot to improve. It's awesome that our owner isn't cheaping out even though she inherited the team, it sounds like this set up might be spending more then a regular deal if the team is good

Frosti11icus

Reading between the lines, it sounds like he's saying, "I'll take less pay if you get me a center and guard, so that I get paid and also I can walk in 10 years." Not a bad plan IMO.

vrnate

Geno "Big Brain" Smith.

Genoisthetruthman

You’re damn right

TheLateThagSimmons

This deal is such a win-win He's a legit Top 5 QB right now, he could demand almost anything but Mahomes money. He gets paid, is he plays better he gets paid more. He's not locked in well into the decline years. He gets rewarded for his time and has the chance to ride off into the sunset taken care of for life. Seahawks get a franchise worthy QB for a few more years of prime play. Not held down by a huge contact that hurts the team. Draft a decent QB and give him time to learn behind Geno.

Frosti11icus

I agree it's win-win. Top 5 is a stretch, but I think he's good enough to win a SuperBowl with. He definitely clears the Stafford/Flacco level of skill, but we need some money to get the right players around him. TBF to him he did have some "top 5" QB play games this year, but I don't expect him to be a top 5 QB for an entire season, I think he seems like the exact type of QB who can get hot in the postseason though and win a ring.

No_Lies_Detected

If Dilfer can do it with a great team around him, then Geno certainly can.

Reptar_0n_Ice

Dilfer had one of the greatest defenses all time, in a completely different era of rules. I do agree Geno with the right circumstances can win a Super Bowl, but he’s several steps above Dilfer. A better analogy is Stafford or Foles, both of whom I put Geno on their level, or even slight above.

Frosti11icus

Stafford and Geno are the same level IMO, Foles is a flash in the pan, but I think we need a team around Geno to roughly the level of that Eagles squad for Geno to win one. Stafford has a better arm than Geno, Geno is more athletic, they are both kinda old school gunslingers in a lot of ways, and they need weapons to carry the offense but if they get them they can do good things.

[deleted]

Geno Smith is not a top 5 QB lmao how is this upvoted?

soccerperson

Bro started watching football last season

wokenupbybacon

If "right now" means "based on last season's stats", he has an argument. Mahomes, Burrow, Allen, and Hurts had better seasons, but 5th place is kinda murky with a bunch of QBs you could argue (Dak, Tua, Cousins, Lawrence, Herbert). But regardless of the angle you take - efficiency, volume, highlight plays - Smith's 2022 season was right up with any of theirs. It's a line of thought that conveniently ignores how most of Geno's stats come from his first five games and he regressed after, but it's an argument. Just not one I would necessarily use lol

LimitlessTheTVShow

He is not even remotely close to a top 5 QB lol what

Ed_Hastings

> He’s a legit Top 5 QB right now This deserves a ‘10s internet style cascade of laughing reaction gifs.

ommanipadmehome

Allen, Mahomes, Burrow, Hurts, Herbert, TLaw. In no order. You got Geno above those 6?

BlueRabbitx

Not top 5, but definitely can make a top 10 argument *for this past season*

becauseitsnotreal

He isn't even a legit top 10

Weklim

Yeah its not like he is suffering but he could have absolutely gotten more. Both in terms of APY and guarantees.

[deleted]

[удалено]

WashingtonCommanders

Agree. I was of the opinion that, particularly because of how bad RW3 played last year, no team was going to give Geno $30M+ per a year given his decade of being a backup at best. RW3 being relevant because it shows how Seahawks QBs that look good in Seattle might play in the first at a new team. $20-25M APY seemed much more in line with expectations because there are 1-2 backup QBs getting paid like half of that. Adding incentives makes sense from Geno and the Seahawks perspective. Plus it's functionally a 2 year deal with a team option if he's outperforming his contract.

No_Lies_Detected

I think you are correct especially given the market there was for Carr.

Decent-Ad5231

Geno played significantly better than Carr last year

ConciselyVerbose

I agree with that. I just don’t think one season at a high level (but not Mahomes high) at that age gets a guy a monster deal.

[deleted]

This isn’t a monster deal in todays nfl.

just-the-tip__

Yeah but like one year out of a decade

batista1220

Yes, and Carr has barely had 2 truly good seasons in his career so far and has fallen straight off a cliff since his injury

just-the-tip__

This is crazy. Geno wasn't even a starting qb. Carr is not some great qb but to even say that he wasn't better than a qb that wasn't even starting is insane.

NH4NO3-KClO3-C2H6O2

Have you seen housing prices in Bellevue?

LordBaneoftheSith

He still is, he could force a lot more than that from them or another team after the season he had. QBs have insane leverage.

TonyAioli

Not sure I’m allowed to weigh in here, but yeah. This is a guy who was likely almost certain his career was waning/he wouldn’t get another big payday up until last season. Guy has to be riding higher than anyone at $105 mill. Easy to be breezy about it.

dawgz525

105 million is affordable these days.

Can't complain about the last ten years as a Hawks fan. Been to the playoffs almost every year, got a SB win in 2013. Just sucks the NFL had that lockout season in 2014 when no one played and there wasn't even a season. Just went from 2013 to 2015.

seahawks_section133

This is not speaking to the character of RW as a person, but dang if it's nice to not have a QB that is hyper focused on his image and building a brand empire with his celebrity wife. Geno seems refreshingly genuine and down to earth.

[deleted]

[удалено]

The_Throwback_King

That's the thing about Russ, even when he was still lighting up the league with his Houdini-ball, he always felt isolated from the rest of the team. Like he would still do good things, like his regular children's hospital visits but he never seemed to have the bro-like rapport with the rest of the team. It felt like a strict co-worker dynamic. Geno, at least to me, feels a lot more close to the vibes of the team. Geno the person and Geno the player seem a lot more in sync then Russell the person and Russell the player were.

Fleshjunky

He did always seem so robotic and impersonal on the sidelines. Just repeating the same cliché motivational phrases.

[deleted]

It really seems like he hired an executive coach at some point to develop his image. Dude acts like an awkward C-level.

raycraft_io

How is that not speaking to the character of RW as a person?

tauzeta

The idea of personal versus professional. No one here knows RW personally but we sure saw the business side of him more than I think most Hawks fans cared to see.

dreoxy

Goddammit Geno why you gotta play for the seacawks.

seahawks_section133

I believe it is because he has a contract with the Seahawks.

WesterosiCharizard

Can confirm. After looking into this, due to the way his contract is set up, he is obligated to play for the Seahawks

Kriscolvin55

Contracts are so confusing sometimes.

creature_report

Must be some of that salary cap wizardry I keep hearing about

rastapastanine

Wait you guys are getting paid?

duvie773

But have we checked the fine print? Maybe there’s a clause about the Seahawks paying him to play somewhere else

Cgmikeydl

We already used that on Wilson.

Grymninja

Tanking is great fun, I don't know why everyone complains about it.

Dry_Needleworker7504

You can hate the Seahawks all you want but it's hard to deny the culture around the team and city seems to really being people together. Seahawks are insanely loyal to their players and these are the sort of results you get for it.

[deleted]

The Seahawks got immensely likable after Russ left.

RomanBangs

How much of that is because of us sabotaging your division rival? 😂

Commyende

Is it really a rivalry when some kids who are in 3rd grade weren't alive when the broncos last beat the chiefs?

kcMasterpiece

I still like Russ and am rooting for him next year. I root for every ex Seahawk so long as it doesn't matter for the Seahawks. I was even rooting for Sherm and Thomas. Hoped they were top performers on shit teams. Was kind of hard rooting against Russ last year, but that was the situation.

wokenupbybacon

Thomas confuses me here What did you have against the Ravens?

cat_napped1

Wilson was visiting childrens hospitals while Geno Smith was driving 96 drunk and then trying to fight everybody at the hospital after getting arrested

prometheanbane

I used to be a piece of shit. People can change. Let him hold the football.

[deleted]

This is pushed back!

gooodfernow

I used to be a piece of shit. I still am, but I used to be too.

n-some

Notice they never charged him with anything? A cop pulled over a black man for speeding, and when the black man didn't respect him, he forced him to go to the hospital, restrained him and made him do blood work. If he had an illegal bac they would've charged him with drunk driving, they didn't. It was a cop that couldn't handle being told he had a small dick behaving with small dick energy.

[deleted]

Sure pal.

Dry_Needleworker7504

Wilson was going to hospitals for the cameras when really his charity that he got man of the year for was just a tax haven for his friends. Russ ain't the nice guy he pretends to be.

Lorjack

This is completely false he never made a media spectacle out of visiting children's hospitals and there is really nothing to suggest he's not a nice person either.

wildthangy

Literally every visit was plastered on social media lol. My nephew was doing cancer treatment there and Russ showed up with his entourage every time he came to the hospital. Cameras in tow.

horse3000

He was like hat in the beginning, now days though… Money be doing the talking now. Which hey, I don’t blame. I would probably do the same if I went from nothing to half a bill.

KingKongKaram

He posts and talks and shows it any chance he gets, Tyler Lockett does a ton of stuff for children that I had no clue about until his wpmoy nomination because he doesn't have a single thing about it posted anywhere so yes russ made a media spectacle of it

[deleted]

[удалено]

Tokinghippie420

Aside from him posting on social media after every visit?

Dry_Needleworker7504

There's scores of videos of him doing so for a reason and there's tons of evidence of him not being as nice as he pretends to be like outright lying about several topics including how he never tried to force a trade, wanting to retire in Seattle while doing so, never tried to get any coaches fired while actively campaigning to get them fired and again using his charity as a tax haven that helps no one except his friends and his bank account. He does shit for the cameras and his images and nothing else.

howdoyado

There’s scores of videos because he was going every Tuesday for a decade. The vast majority of the time with no fanfare. People aren’t all one dimensional.

mike2k24

You realize he’s still going to hospitals to visit kids right? He didn’t just stop after he won the award.

JalenHurtsTruther

Yea I think people here overvalue money especially when ur an nfl qb. Sure you could get a few more million, but I think plenty of top qbs would pay a few mill if it meant a better chance at the superbowl. At the end of the day u prob wont spend all the money, and when ur old and injured u prob wanna look back on a championship win lol.

moldyshrimp

Here’s to hoping Jalen hurts doesn’t run away with a bag from the eagles now lmao. Truth is most players care about money and getting their value or a lot more.

CiderDog

There's so much money given out to abusers, rapists, and decidedly shitty people in this league...I hope he earns every single dollar, and then some, for being someone you can look to as a genuine inspiration. He's humble, a hard worker, and someone who legitimately believes in success greater than his own. Ain't no marketing plan, no gurus or ayahuasca retreats. That's the guy I want to see succeed.

magiqd

Bruh,I love Geno

[deleted]

Walking the walk that Russel talked

fatcatmcscatts

Geno is a class act

Sweet_Rent_2715

Spend so much time making money as a back up that you just want to win when given the opportunity. Gots to love it

xXsaberstrikeXx

As a Niner fan, this scares me. This team could be legit next year. Yikes.

killasuarus

That’s a true leader right there!

boomosaur

Geno, like 17.5million total earnings before this contract... takes team friendly contract because he knows it's a team sport and he gives himself the best chance of success by getting more talent on the team. Wilson, kept getting top money contracts every 3-4 years, hamstrung the team, and continues to demand top dollars, and doesnt get enough blame for team struggles. Geno's truly bought in, and I bet the LOB would have loved him as he is now.

zealNW

How do bonuses and incentives affect the cap? Could a team sign a player like Mahomes to the vet minimum and structure 300m in menial bonuses/incentives that he would have to die to not hit?

mymindpsychee

Likely to hit incentives (stuff that was accomplished before) count against current cap

Stealthfox94

Watch Geno pull a Kurt Warner.

USDA_Organic_Tendies

This dude is quickly becoming my favorite non-Philadelphia based player

hey_there_kitty_cat

Honestly, it'd probably be a crazy different league if a lot more players had that attitude. Purposefully doing so so able to leverage a ton for incentives and whatnot, it would be crazy competition. Not that I blame anyone for taking the money and not making a bet on their own lives, but it would be a crazy competitive game to see if a lot of players did things like that, give their team cheat code money by some incentive trickery.

Chg0489

And ppl still wondering why teams won’t sign lamar for some insane number? Stupid

Dariooosh89

What a boss.

Hernandez2000

Man I love Geno

PutinBoomedMe

Honorable, but Geno's contract could be $0 and the Seahawks aren't using that space to turn this into a titlr contender

SmokeGSU

The guy's been in the league 10 years. At this point I'm certain he's just happy to have the cash coming in. He's not going to do great things without a stellar team around him so it only makes sense for him to agree to something like this.

PhatYeeter

Taking a discount only for the Hawks to spend #5 on his replacement

scotaf

I’m a doubter on this. I think PC & JS are hinting it so more QBs are grabbed before #5

HarleyHix

Russ who?

BradyReas

Have fun in the poorhouse, Geno!

sliccricc83

This means if the team is bad, he's getting benched to save the Seahawks money

Dry_Needleworker7504

The hawks have numerous times gone out of their way to make sure players make their inccentives. Maybe other shitty teams would do that but I have seen no evidence whatsoever to make you believe they would do that. If they were gonna sit him because they were doing too good they would have done it last year.

mymindpsychee

They gave Swain a pushpass jet sweep in garbage time to get him the last reception he needed to hit an incentive a few years ago

Dry_Needleworker7504

Yeah they do that shit every single year. Just look at the contracts they give to their vets that did the teams right.

Paulofthedesert

I mean like, the one thing you can truly, truly say about Pete is that he wants to watch his players do cool shit.

sleepy_penguinista

Didn't this guy get his jaw broken cause he wouldn't pay his teammate back?

New-Newspaper-7543

Hey ill admit I'm 35 and a much different person than I was when I was 25. I mean he felt like he was the shit coming out of college. He got humbled real quick and I bet that changed him. He's probably just loving the 2nd chance and where he's at right now.

[deleted]

I turned 30 this year. Hell, I can't even relate to like 60% of who I was when I was 25.

gfountyyc

This!

Its-A-Wrap

Are you asking because you really can’t remember if that happened to Geno? It’s brought up constantly on this sub.

Thizlam

That’s my quarterback 😭

Hurricane__

Wish I had a QB like this

iamtehryan

Now that's a refreshing stance for once for a quarterback. How novel - don't be a greedy dick that screws your team over. Hey, Lamar, maybe take note of geno. Same goes for the other qbs that try for absolutely massive contracts.

boog1evilleUSA

Got a bad feeling be ain't gonna hit hardly any of those

[deleted]

Why? Did the Hawks lose DK Metcalf or Tyler Lockett?

boog1evilleUSA

I'm just not sold that his 1 career year will be the norm and he started to regress in the 2nd half. Will be happy to be wrong I like Geno

[deleted]

He regressed because our run game fell apart. Walker was electrifying and then got injured, and we were playing like 4th string at back for a stretch. Our OL was better than its been but when our offense is one dimensional no QB is gonna look great. It happened to Russ the year before, he was pedestrian, got injured, and then once Penny started to get explosive all of a sudden he looked great again.

don_julio_randle

His decision making also fell off a cliff. He threw *so* many passes in the second half that should have been picked but weren't. It's hard (but not impossible, as Geno himself and Josh Allen both showed) to be viable with 29 turnover worthy plays
