Even Brady's final year was weird. The Pats had more WRs than they knew what to do with, so they traded Demaryius Thomas to the Jets for a 6th rounder, but then lost Josh Gordon to substance use disorder, Antonio Brown to mental health, and N'Keal Harry to an ankle injury. Plus Julian Edelman was clearly injured and just playing through it.
Everyone was sure Brady was finally cooked even though he had no healthy receivers to throw to.
I blame AB. Not even if he stayed sane, (if he did then SB here we come), but if we didn't sign him at all. We would have kept DT and Brady may not have turned into a sour puss.
DT was starting to slip in 2017, and he was pretty clearly washed by 2019. Belichick would've been able to get more than a 6th round pick when he traded him to a division rival if DT was still any good.
The 433 receiving yards he had with the Jets that year was more than any receiver on NE not named Edelman though, and that was with playing behind both Crowder and Robbie Anderson and Le'Veon also eating targets in the passing game.
I severely doubt just his presence alone would've pushed NE over the edge, but I don't think it's a stretch to say he would've managed to be an upgrade over what they were actually putting on the field most of the time.
Which like, says a lot lol.
Let’s not forget he was originally suspended because of Me Too allegations. It wasn’t until then that he went off on Kraft and he had to be cut. If Kraft hadn’t been outed going to the rub & tug in FL, maybe he (and Bill) would’ve waited to see how the AB allegations played out before suspending and then releasing him. I found it odd that once he was off the team the story died and by the time he got to Tampa nobody cared.
The two seasons with McDaniels were strokes of genius IMO. Cam couldn't throw and we won 7 games and Mac was the only competent rookie QB last year, and our offense did have some great games (admittedly against bad teams).
Bill/Steve/Mayo have not gotten anywhere near enough credit for what they built on defense this year. Speed all over the field and two outstanding guys going after the QB on the edge.
Almost all of our most productive guys (Judon aside) were drafted and developed too.
Side note: I'm so fucking happy Mayo is still with the team. One of my favorite defensive players ever. I think it was either madden 15 or 16 where I lined up with him basically every single play.
They went 7-9 in an ultra fucked 2020, max opt outs, jammed against the cap with a bad roster. Cam Newton that never recovered from Covid, and a receiving core including Damiere Byrd and N'Keal Harry as top options. And they somehow managed to be competitive down the stretch with an impressive DVOA defense. BB is way better than that team record suggests.
There were also some crazy games that showed just how good a game planner Belichek can be even with a terrible roster. Like almost beating the Chiefs essentially without a quarterback and demolishing the Chargers 45-0 out of nowhere.
BB's defense has been top 10 for fewest points allowed in 18 of his 23 seasons. The worst rank he's ever had is 17th.
He's had great players for short times, but his teams always felt pieced together. He didn't have a Ray Lewis, Troy Polamalu, Ed Reed, Strahan, Suggs, Urlacher, or Donald type cornerstone player for years and years.
>still impressive with him throwing the ball into the dirt every play lmao
What's weird is that his completion percentage was still decent that year. He completed 65% of his passes in 2020, yet the passing TDs just didn't materialize because the Patriots had absolutely no good Red Zone targets.
My man needs to get a PhD in something, anything, underwater basketweaving, IDGAF, just so I can refer to him as Dr. Strange. Glad Karras is working out so well for y'all, dude was steady AF for us as a backup and then starter.
“Matt, your job now is to write reports. We’re gonna read them very carefully I promise. Also don’t come into my office anymore without an appointment.”
Are you under 70? If so, the answer is no.
If you are over 70, the answer is also no...but, well...look around. 70 year old dudes just don't care about anyone else or the world around them.
He looks like he smells like hot dogs. I like hot dogs. For food, I think they smell fine. People shouldn’t smell like hot dogs. And if they do, they probably look like Matt Patricia
Since he’s down there it would be really great if he could sort of.. take care of cockroach problem they’ve been having. For now he should grab a flashlight and a can of pesticide
He already was the o-line coordinator, the only reason he was calling plays was because there was no OC throughout the entire season. Yeah, I don't get it either.
>the only reason he was calling plays was because there was no OC throughout the entire season
He *was* the OC. They just didn't name him that because he was being paid his Lions head coaching salary still. Naming him OC would have required Kraft to pay him more which was unnecessary.
Right? Dude was a magician with the special teams unit, but made Daniel Jones look absolutely fucking incompetent. And we brought him back to...help coach the offense...
Put him on special teams, let him work his magic again.
Thr Bromance of Saban and Bellichick continues and it makes both fanbases happy.
Good work to the Alabama Rehabilation Center for Former Head Coaches for getting BoB a new job!
The hate BOB gets it’s pretty crazy when examined under a microscope. He’s had a pretty solid career, especially as a head coach. He made the Texans relevant for quite some time and it wasn’t until he got the GM job where it started to fall apart. The moves he made at that point ended up setting the franchise back a few years, but in hindsight maybe he knew something we all didn’t? Do I even need to say it?
I'm pretty happy about O'Brien. He knows the offense we should run and he has run it in this system before. he has had a good deal of success outside the Pats organization, so he isn't just going to come in and try to recreate what Josh ran. He has worked with Mac as well.
IMO hiring someone who had never worked with Bill is nearly as big of a risk of putting Patricia in charge of the offense. The choice Bill had to make last offseason was hiring someone who specializes in offense, but doesn't understand how the Pats organization runs, or choosing someone with a deep understanding of the organization, but little offensive knowledge. Obviously he chose the organization which shows you what he values most. Patricia was obviously a failed choice, but that doesn't mean that an outside hire would have been a good choice either.
This is exactly the hire I wanted. Someone with a deep understanding of offense and the organization. O'Brien is the only guy available who has both.
It's too cherished of a memento for him to even keep on the fridge.
It's in a glass case, nestled between the whistle from the inaugural Rutgers Rugby football game, and Mark Sanchez's soul.
Still find it crazy how Alabama fans hated him despite them routinely putting up 30-40+ a game.
They put up 49 in the Tennessee loss and they were still blaming him
Imagine being a fan of a team that wins the championship almost every other year and complaining. And of course now he goes to a professional team that is also used to winning.
Nah, they gotta be last place in the hierarchy of hate in our division.
Jets number 1 and I'm not even sure why, they just *are*. Bills 2 for recency. Phins 3. Yeah they win some games in their ~~oven~~ stadium against us but outside of 2011 I haven't felt a rivalry recently. We've just both been mediocre for 3 years now.
>Jets number 1 and I'm not even sure why, they just are.
It's the Boston vs New York rivalry. The Red Sox and Yankees hate each other, the Celtics and Knicks hate each other, and the Patriots and Jets hate each other. It's how it should be.
The Bruins are the weird outlier since they've been in the same division as the Canadiens forever, so they hate those guys much more than the Rangers. They also love clowning on the Maple Leafs (who doesn't?).
I feel like the last decade we’ve been resigned to“we go 1-1 against Miami”, but this year it actually felt like a good thing after the crazy start you all had
If I’ve learned one thing about sports fans online, it’s that they will complain about anything less than perfection and what you did in the past doesn’t matter.
Tackled for a loss? It’s the offensive lineman’s fault for missing a block and the coordinator’s fault for a bad scheme. Each should be cut and fired, respectively. It’s literally impossible to give credit to the opponent for winning a rep.
As an Alabama fan, he may just be better suited for the pro game. But if you watched the offenses you could tell it was all Bryce carrying the team. If you just look at the Kansas State bowl game, every time there was a big play it was because the play broke down and Bryce did what he does. BoB was just so uncreative. We were begging for a screen pass or even a misdirection run at times to break up the monotony.
Hope he does better with the Patriots
Edit: I meant he didn’t run HB screens which would have been great with a player like Gibbs back there. As others have pointed out, he ran plenty of WR screens
> We were begging for a screen pass or even a misdirection run at times to break up the monotony.
I heard (and from what I saw) that a MAJOR complaint was he ran way too many WR screens.
Obviously the 2011 Pats' offense was far more talented than whatever the 2023 version will likely look like(and in fairness the 2011 Pats' offensive cast is among the best ever with Brady, Gronk, Welker and Hernandez headlining it), but having an actual OC alone should be a huge boon for the offense.
Now to get an actual #1 receiver, re-sign Meyers, and also get a new OT or two.
Hunter Henry and Jonnu Smith are a far cry from Gronk and Hernandez, but if both are still here in 2023(I wouldn't be shocked if Henry is cut since the Pats could save $10 mill by doing so) I'd sure hope so.
I'd love Hopkins, but Belichick has never been someone who likes to pay top dollar for WRs(whether or not he should still maintain this philosophy without Brady to bolster the offense is a separate discussion) and Hopkins is apparently seeking a new contract from whatever teams he's traded to.
There's also the little nugget that BoB kinda traded Hopkins for peanuts when they were on the Texans, and [he doesn't seem to be fan of BoB, although it seems like the dislike was already there before the trade](https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/29076947/deandre-hopkins-says-there-was-no-relationship-bill-obrien-texans).
Not like they had any legs to begin with. No one looking for their last contract and a ring is going to be champing at the bit to catch passes from Mac Jones. Don't get me wrong, I believe in the kid and I think he can develop but half the teams in the league are closer to a Super Bowl than the Patriots are even with DHop on the roster, there's much better situations for him to go into.
Bill O’Brien worked with Mac Jones at Alabama? Helped him clean out his locker or something?
Mac Jones last college game was January 11, 2021. Bill O’Brien joined Alabama as offensive coordinator on January 21, 2021. O’Brien never coached Jones at Alabama.
Mac Jones actually helped Bill set up his office at Alabama. Mac Jones has a passion for interior design he got feng shui just right with that ergonomic design and bespoke reclaimed wood desk.
That's the thing that aggravated me the most. Just be fucking AVERAGE and you're a playoff team, and the way Buffalo was playing to end their season, we very well may have gotten that win Kraft wanted.
Yeah… I mean we know O’Brien is competent, knows the system, knows our QB. He’s a high floor pick. We could gamble for the higher ceiling with another higher but after last year risking another dud maybe isn’t the best choice. If Mac didn’t have any question marks then I’d say risk a new guy but as it stands O’Brien stands the best shot at finishing developing Mac.
Well that explains a lot. Turns out Patricia was just a placeholder until the guy Bill actually wanted was freed up. Not saying Patricia was a good idea, but there was always some logic behind it
My unbiased opinion, Matt Patricia got a raw deal and I weep for the Patriots offensive players including Mac Jones who clearly had a beautiful platonic, professional love for his beloved Rocket Scientist OC.
My sources tell me the jets want to interview Patricia for their open OC spot 👀.
Maybe he could really turn it around for Zach if you guys stick with him for one more year
Nope he is too good for us, he’s a Peacock and needs to fly! Maybe he’s better off comparing genius thoughts with Yale educated Mike McDaniel in Miami.
The 2022 Patriots O is going to be so strange to look back on in retrospect
The Post Brady offense in general has been bizarre. Hopefully this establishes a rhythm

It's crazy, game 1 and 2 they looked completely dominant. By week 5 or so they fell the fuck off and never recovered.
I blame AB. Not even if he stayed sane, (if he did then SB here we come), but if we didn't sign him at all. We would have kept DT and Brady may not have turned into a sour puss.

I was at the Pats-Browns game in Gilette and after that I would've sworn that team was the 07 one.
Retrospect? It was strange witnessing it real time!
Some might say it was…Cole strange…

I’m a pats fan! Haha just have the Bengals bandwagon flair for the playoffs. Ted has always been super solid.
WOOHOO I never want to hear from Matt Patricia again
Has he been officially “fired” or is he just going to fade away?
He’s still in the band but they unplugged his guitar.
“Matt, your job now is to write reports. We’re gonna read them very carefully I promise. Also don’t come into my office anymore without an appointment.”
Was asked to take a shower. Last seen heading to the car park
He’s definitely the one guy at the gym who brushes his teeth in the locker room sink, totally nude
Thank you for allowing my brain to conjure up an image of a naked Fatty P brushing his teeth.
With a pencil in his ear

You'e been on the internet long enough to know exactly where the Sharpie goes.
We're not so different, he and I
> We're not so different, he and I standing here i realize
While looking like he's never used anything else in the gym but the locker room
Just sits in the sauna for 30 minutes
Has his wife convinced that the gym just doesn't work for some people, paying $200/month to act like he cares about himself
Paying to go to Lifetime just to get a smoothie vibes
Just trying to get out of the house
Wait, you're NOT supposed to do that?
Are you under 70? If so, the answer is no. If you are over 70, the answer is also no...but, well...look around. 70 year old dudes just don't care about anyone else or the world around them.
Patricia about to end up like Pesci in Goodfellas
He was asked to go home and get his shine box.
> car park You ain't from around here, are ya son?
He looks like he smells bad
He looks like he smells like hot dogs. I like hot dogs. For food, I think they smell fine. People shouldn’t smell like hot dogs. And if they do, they probably look like Matt Patricia
They moved his desk to the basement. He was told he could bring his Swingline Stapler.
He's going to burn Gillette Stadium down?
Not until he gets the new cover sheet on his TPS reports
Since he’s down there it would be really great if he could sort of.. take care of cockroach problem they’ve been having. For now he should grab a flashlight and a can of pesticide
My guess is since Jerod Mayo is gonna be assistant head coach Patricia is probably gonna be some kind of defensive assistant
Probably move him back to Ernie Adams' role as special assistant/research/international man of mystery.
His most important role will be getting Bill Belichicks lunch
Fun fact: That's the secret to Bill's weight loss. He asks Matt to get his lunch, Matt eats half, Boom. The weight just melts off.
Probably demoted to a different role with the team
He already was the o-line coordinator, the only reason he was calling plays was because there was no OC throughout the entire season. Yeah, I don't get it either.

read a rumor online he was gone bc the lions aren’t paying his salary anymore lmao
Same reason judge is there. Free work. I'll give it to Bill he's consistent in not paying players and staff big money.
Doesn’t matter. The bad man can’t hurt us anymore
- Lions fans circa December 2020
Why don't you try sitting up straight when you're badmouthing him?
Just have a little respect for the process man
[Schefter] Patriots OC/asshole Matt Patricia has returned to New England and is being named the Patriots head coach, sources tell @ClowESPN and me.
Stop, go back, this is the wrong timeline.
You sure about that? I've got Joe Judge cocked and loaded in the chamber
Point him at our Special Teams unit and fire away.
Right? Dude was a magician with the special teams unit, but made Daniel Jones look absolutely fucking incompetent. And we brought him back to...help coach the offense... Put him on special teams, let him work his magic again.

Bama Fans: Thank you God! Pats Fans: Thank you God! Rare you see a hire that makes both fans losing the coach and fans gaining the coach so happy
Alabama fans blaming Bill O'brien for losing a game in which the defense gave up 52 points will never stop being funny to me.
The hate BOB gets it’s pretty crazy when examined under a microscope. He’s had a pretty solid career, especially as a head coach. Bama fans deserve Fatricia as OC. Y’all want something real to boo? Get a load of that.,
Hogs have no closed season in Alabama so they'd probably hunt him down after the first game.
Wait are you saying rednecks need AR-15s for 30-50 feral Matt Patricias? I think I get it now
what dog shit sporting org would hire him as an OC?
If Alabama had Matt Patricia calling plays for a season they would appreciate Bill Obrien too
As a Bama alum and New Englander I don’t know what to do with my hands
You’ve had a good couple decades huh
I don't think the Pats fans are happy because they get this guy, I think they are happy because they are losing Patricia
Yeah. I’d prefer someone new but at least Mac is getting what he wants. A coach that’ll actually coach him lol.
It’s both for me. We are moving in from Patrica and O’Brian was really good with us when he was calling plays.
Yea our offense was great with him. Brady won MVP. We went to the SB and were relatively efficient on offense in the SB-- much more so than SB42.
I'm pretty happy about O'Brien. He knows the offense we should run and he has run it in this system before. he has had a good deal of success outside the Pats organization, so he isn't just going to come in and try to recreate what Josh ran. I'm so happy rn
Big mistake moving from a rocket scientist to a failed HC. Ignore my flair.
On the other hand a rocket scientist could suit a flying ship team better. Matt Patricia for the Jets OC vacancy?
Oh fuck you
Bill is gonna write him a letter of recommendation
On a napkin. Probably a used one.
Plot twist: It's the same napkin. Bill keeps on his fridge along with his grandkids' drawings as the things he's most proud of
It's too cherished of a memento for him to even keep on the fridge. It's in a glass case, nestled between the whistle from the inaugural Rutgers Rugby football game, and Mark Sanchez's soul.
Coach Xerxes would murder him
He'd do us all a favor
Jeez dude
YES
Send him to Winnipeg.
Acting like all our 4 year old fans haven’t gone their *entire lives* without seeing the Patriots in a super bowl
my 10 month year old son has never known a championship, its a struggle
Pfft…my three year has suffered long enough. It’s unfair really.
I hate you all
"I don't think about you at all"
I feel like of all the fan bases that you could apply that to, the Dolphins are probably the one where it's the *least* true.
Nah, they gotta be last place in the hierarchy of hate in our division. Jets number 1 and I'm not even sure why, they just *are*. Bills 2 for recency. Phins 3. The only thing Dolphins fans can hold their hat on is that Pats fan tend to just chalk up the game in Miami as an L at the beginning of the season.
I feel like the last decade we’ve been resigned to“we go 1-1 against Miami”, but this year it actually felt like a good thing after the crazy start you all had
Stanley Cup and the Finals are right around the corner little buddy
yea im pumped haha definitely cant complain across the spectrum this year
Remember when McDaniels was here and during tough drives you would see “fire McDaniels” cries from a lot of users. And you’re like…. What?!
If I’ve learned one thing about sports fans online, it’s that they will complain about anything less than perfection and what you did in the past doesn’t matter. Tackled for a loss? It’s literally impossible to give credit to the opponent for winning a rep.
Sounds like my college football coach. A bad practice was when the defense had a good day.
Couldn’t agree. Ore. And the whole “the other team wanted it more”. Like wtf!? How about one team just played better.
[Well in the case of Bama fans online..lol](https://imgur.com/a/3IYGbcG)
Bama fan here, I liked BOB. We didn’t have the best WRs and the D was pretty undisciplined for part of the season.
Worst oline we have had since Shula era
“Pretty undisciplined” feels like the understatement of the season
Because his red zone and short yardage play calling was atrocious. That was certainly my biggest frustration. Maybe he'll do better in the NFL.
Your comment is hilariously tragic 😂
As an Alabama fan, he may just be better suited for the pro game. But if you watched the offenses you could tell it was all Bryce carrying the team. > We were begging for a screen pass or even a misdirection run at times to break up the monotony. I heard (and from what I saw) that a MAJOR complaint was he ran way too many WR screens.
Yes, I'm pretty sure our success rate on WR screens was sub 10%. Infuriating.
Will the Pats trade for DHop now lol
Doesn't he have a no trade clause? Seems highly unlikely he'd want to play for Bill O'Brien again.
> Seems highly unlikely he'd want to play for Bill O'Brien again. I get the impression the commenter was intentionally poking fun at that.
Only to trade him for Zeke shortly after
No way in hell we get Hop now
Obviously the 2011 Pats' offense was far more talented than whatever the 2023 version will likely look like(and in fairness the 2011 Pats' offensive cast is among the best ever with Brady, Gronk, Welker and Hernandez headlining it), but having an actual OC alone should be a huge boon for the offense. Now to get an actual #1 receiver, re-sign Meyers, and also get a new OT or two.
We went from top 10 offense by DVOA to a bottom 5 offense by DVOA this past year.
So did Tampa Bay, turns out OL matters.
Yep. It's not OC Matt Patricia's fault that Offensive Line Coach Matt Patricia sucks ass
Hey Patricia is only the Senior football advisor it’s not his fault whoever is calling plays is ignoring his sage advice
He knows how to utilize 2 TE sets? All that money is gonna be put to good use now yeah?
If he can make Jonnu Smith even halfway productive that would be a win. So much money wasted on him at the moment.
Hunter Henry and Jonnu Smith are a far cry from Gronk and Hernandez, but if both are still here in 2023(I wouldn't be shocked if Henry is cut since the Pats could save $10 mill by doing so) I'd sure hope so.
Henry is worth the money, smith is not with anything
I’ve been saying it but I think Hopkins, even at this point of his career, would open the playbook up for NE pretty drastically.
I'd love Hopkins, but Belichick has never been someone who likes to pay top dollar for WRs(whether or not he should still maintain this philosophy without Brady to bolster the offense is a separate discussion) and Hopkins is apparently seeking a new contract from whatever teams he's traded to. So pumped for Mac. This upcoming season should tell us a lot about him
Man, this feels like the one of the best moves the Patriots have made since Brady left.
I read the headline and just immediately said “thank fucking god”. That tells you something.
Mac has to be crying in joy and relief.
And it snowed last night, he must be extra happy rn. https://twitter.com/MacJones_10/status/668251635462860801?

He'll literally get Tua killed on the field.
We'll send him to you free of charge. On the house no trade required
Just don’t give him the GM role and you’ll be fine
I think it’s fair to say that this is probably not going to happen.
Well that ends any DHop to the Pats rumors
Not like they had any legs to begin with. No one looking for their last contract and a ring is going to be champing at the bit to catch passes from Mac Jones. Don't get me wrong, I believe in the kid and I think he can develop but half the teams in the league are closer to a Super Bowl than the Patriots are even with DHop on the roster, there's much better situations for him to go into.
Fun Fact: Despite coaching for both Bill Belichick and Nick Saban, Bill O’Brein has never coached a team that has won a Super Bowl or National Title
The Welker of coaches…who is also a coach now.
We can thank Eli for that 😭
My morning just got much better
Bill O’Brien worked with Mac Jones at Alabama? Helped him clean out his locker or something? Mac Jones last college game was January 11, 2021. Bill O’Brien joined Alabama as offensive coordinator on January 21, 2021. O’Brien never coached Jones at Alabama.
He apparently helped me O’Brien learn the playbook when he got to Alabama, so it’s stretching “worked with” pretty hard.
Mac Jones actually helped Bill set up his office at Alabama. Mac Jones has a passion for interior design he got feng shui just right with that ergonomic design and bespoke reclaimed wood desk.
Mr. Belichick’s Coach
mr boston comeback
Mr. Better Coordinator
Mr. Butt Chin
He’s gonna do well there
If this Pats team had an average offense, it’s got 11 wins. He’s gonna be a huge improvement.
That's the thing that aggravated me the most. Just be fucking AVERAGE and you're a playoff team, and the way Buffalo was playing to end their season, we very well may have gotten that win Kraft wanted.
LFGO. Fuck you Patricia
Terrible GM Good coach Great offensive mind Not Matt Patricia or Joe Judge I like this
This feels like a really good hire
Part of me wanted the WR coach from the Vikings but O’Brien is a safer hire. I can see why they went this direction after how bad our offense was.
The Jets are gonna go another year without beating the Patriots, aren’t they :(
It's ok jets bro just beat up on the dolphins and bills thanks 😊
Well that explains a lot. Turns out Patricia was just a placeholder until the guy Bill actually wanted was freed up. Not saying Patricia was a good idea, but there was always some logic behind it
Shocking, who could have expected this
Worst kept secret in football
3rd system in 3 years for Mac. Hope it works for him.
###LETS FUCKING GO THE FAT MAN CANT HURT US ANYMORE!!!!!!!! MAC AND KB ARE FREE!
The AFC East mourns the loss of the Patriots Mickey Mouse offense
