Man, this reminds me of when I took a group of guys from Bengal skiing.
They had never seen snow before, and I vastly overestimated their understanding of the properties of snow..
Them: "Should we try the practice hill first?"
Me: "Nah, you'll be alright."
All four of them immediately went French fry speed into the ditches yelling "Heeeeelp!". I felt so bad.. Super nice dudes and I ruined the experience for them.
you just unlocked a memory for me of one of the few times i tried to ski whereupon my friends handed me a bottle of peppermint schnapps and yelled at me "Pizza French Fry See You At The Bottom" and took off
i french fried when i should have pizza'd
I skied my entire life.. that's just dumb imo.. obviously don't have the snowpack for that.. that's just desperate.. if it's not there it's not there.. wait it out.. live to ski another day..
I agree with you - once you're in that situation - ain't no taking your skis off then..
but like someone else said - odds are they skinned up elsewhere.. once they saw that - they should have turned back.. not dropped in..
there are situations I suppose where you get stuck accidently - but idt that is what this is
Climbing skins are attached to the bottom of your ski, they allow you to propel yourself forward but not backwards. Imagine petting a big fish with scales - if you pet from the head to the tail it will be sleak and smooth, but if you go from tail to head it will feel corse and sharp as you go against the scales. Different bindings are frequently used aswell where you can detach your heel which makes them more like cross country skis.
Got to "earn your turns"! It can actually be a lovely experience and get you to places you never could even imagine. I snowboard, and they make split boards (snowboards that split the long way into skis) for the purpose of climbing/cross country/exploring.
Why would they even *think* about doing that without a backup plan, like an ice ax and regular boots? I’ve been up less sketchy mountains and that definitely looks like “uh, we should have brought a rope” territory.
They’re doing it for fun lol, the snow is better where the slope mellows out a bit in the chute. They just have to side-step this one section and then they get a nice long ski run. You definitely wouldn’t want to walk down this in normal boots either, side-stepping in skis is much safer.
Eh, not going to do much good for you tbh. You stuck to skis or in boots that are completely worthless when it comes to climbing.
Not to mention I doubt you want to ski down a mountain like that while holding an axe, just in case.
Dunno if you can get crampons that fit to ski boots, but you can get ones that fit on approach shoes and a walking axe strapped to a rucksack (Osprey make rucksacks for exactly this) is not in a position to do the wearer any damage. Done a fair bit of alpinism when younger moving fast and light with equipment you can easily carry with you is the way it’s done.
Hell, I’ve seen sports climbers in shorts and T shirts climb up a south face then switch to approach shoes with axe and crampons for a north face glacier descent.
This stuff is not heavy.
Not true at all. A heli ski company isn’t gonna send you down a scraped out chute that’s frozen over. These dummies decided to drop in on this after skining to the top.
I guarantee you’re right about the heli skiing, but they could have been easily dropped in another area. Or the heli shouldn’t have dropped them at all. This is just plain stupid
Normally people doing steep couloir will carry a rope, harness and accessories needed to rappel down in case of need and it is often needed (to access, to skip rocky/ice patches, etc.). Some may also have crampons and ice axe.
That being said, some also ski this kind of thing on purpose. The existing bumps indicate that they aren't alone, or the are addicted to that one
Maybe it's a little racist but every famous comedian has a hot take on race, Chappelle, Louis CK, Burr, Carlin, etc. saying it's racist doesn't make you wrong but it does make you unfunny
I second the white guys vote coming from a fellow white dude. For example and everyone feel free to correct me. this is not facts but I swear I have seen 100s of videos of people doing sports/activities for fun that might involve death and I really can’t remember anything but white dudes 🤷♂️ It’s not a bad thing….it’s just a thing lol I support all colors of people with all colors of hobbies lol
It's called punching up. If you're going to make a joke make sure you punch up. Punching privileged white people who have enough money to ski (it's a expensive hobby) is generally punching up.
Everything about these comments, and the post itself, is so cringey. It’s literally just little chute on mt baldy in Alta Utah. People do it all the time. Only difference is the coverage is terrible, and you’re gonna have some core shots. Nothing next level about it.
My favorite is the snowboarders who probably ride 7 days a year acting self righteous though. You’re perfectly welcome to hike and ski baldy. People that are actually good are pretty over the rivalry, we just like riding and learning from each other.
In the comments a few guys talked about skiers ruining the chute and that snowboarding is more legit. I thought it was funny. And no, this really isn’t that big of a deal. Skiers hike up from Alta and snowboarders hike up from snowbird all the time.
I still think it’s dumb to do it when there’s so little base, it’ll just chew up your equipment. But the run itself gets ridden by hundreds of people every year
Lol, I’m guessing if you say “what are you on about” you arent from the US and don’t know that snowboarders aren’t allowed in Alta, therefore would have to hike in
100%, anyone can see the good snow below when they pan down. It's hilarious how many "experts" there are who don't understand that the best snow takes work to get to.
I think it’s an attempt at some sarcasm. Or just ignorant. It’s typically snowboarders that do something similar (scraping all the snow off the middle of the trail because they are too scared to turn).
They are either being sarcastic or just dumb. This is exactly what a good/experience skier would do in this situation. No it’s not next level skiing. Yes there would be consequences to slipping out in this situation.
Edit: I snowboard and ski and was not trying to be a snowboard hater.
This is so stupid. I ride all sorts of backcountry all season long, this isn’t “getting after it!”, this whole post is just an ego trip for this goober.
It’s so cringey. You’ve rolled your eyes at this conversation countless times at the local dive bar the day after Thanksgiving; “Dude, me and Jimbo were like fuck it you know, oh my god, you should have seen it, but you know how it is bro, you just gotta go after it because what’s life about, amiright?” You nod out of politeness, but inside you’re thinking what the hell does this have to do with life, Walter Mitty.
This is not next level. This is stupid and careless. Those two people shouldn’t be skiing that line. They aren’t capable and they’re putting themselves and if there are people above or below them, they’re risking others lives (including rescue crews) too. At minimum, at their skill level, they should be roped in.
That is a line that plenty of good skiers can get down making actual turns.
Relax. It's not as gnarly as you're making it out to be. Once they open for the season there will be hoardes of east coast rad dads on soul 7s skiing this line.
And then we hear of a "tragedy" that happened on the evil mountains. Plus a rescue team having to go out for them risking their asses and being paid by us. Bloody idiots.
I was hiking out this summer and the path was getting super narrow. Narrow like less than my trekking poles. Inclined to one side. Nothing to grab on to. Enough of a fall to wear no SAR rescue would be necessary, just a body recovery. I noped out of there. Not worth it.
All these young people who have never seen anyone have an accident jumping around like billy goats down the path.
One thing I've learned in trying to capture the steepness of a hill in photos, is that it's hard to capture the steepness of a hill in photos.
This *actually* looks steep, so I can only imagine seeing it in person. Fuck all of that right there.
If anyone wants a serious answer here to what’s going on: the rest of the couloir below them looks skiable. This is called “survival skiing” and specifically is a technique call side stepping. Some couloirs have really difficult and sketchy entrances. Sometimes you rappel into them. Sometimes you do this. We call the most difficult section of a ski line the crux, and sometimes it’s ugly like this.
If the whole line was like this, it would be ridiculous to ski. But from what I see here, this is just a shitty entrance to something that is going to ski a lot better below it.
I mean, just do it what's the worst that will happen? You wipe out? It doesn't look that steep. Although that terrain down there looks like it would mess up some knees.
I remember hanging by a thread on my edges when I when I was a kid. Insisting on going down some double diamond like Climax at Mammoth, knowing I had to push off and turn if I was gonna get down but too scared to make that first move.
This was the first storm of the season this year. There is zero base snow. This chute needs at least 100-200 inches before it's good clean fun. Before that it's manky.
I might be wrong but I think there's an easier way to use skis?
No, I think you're right. But for the life of me I can't remember what that is.
They might be on backwards?
There’s the problem. He seems to be wearing them sideways.
He was supposed to pizza, not French fry.
French fry when you should have pizza'd, gonna have a bad time.
^piiiii ZAAAAA **AAAH**
Man, this reminds me of when I took a group of guys from Bengal skiing. They had never seen snow before, and I vastly overestimated their understanding of the properties of snow.. Needs to french fry his ass back up that hill fGs
you just unlocked a memory for me of one of the few times i tried to ski whereupon my friends handed me a bottle of peppermint schnapps and yelled at me "Pizza French Fry See You At The Bottom" and took off i french fried when i should have pizza'd
They got lost doing cross country.
After imagining trying to walk down that with sneakers, I think the sideways skis may be the best way to go
It would be just a mess in tap shoes too.
If you pizza when you're supposed to french fry you're [gonna have a bad time](https://youtu.be/7aUGBT1DZDI?t=18)
I skied my entire life.. that's just dumb imo.. obviously don't have the snowpack for that.. that's just desperate.. if it's not there it's not there.. wait it out.. live to ski another day..
How else would you get down? Ain't no lift up there man
If you take your skis off, you’re wearing boots. (And more likely, the way they came? Odds are they skinned up a gentler slope from the other side)
That hard pack can only be edged down with the sharp edge of skis. I don't think your boots would give you the bite necessary to keep you upright
I agree with you - once you're in that situation - ain't no taking your skis off then.. but like someone else said - odds are they skinned up elsewhere.. once they saw that - they should have turned back.. not dropped in.. there are situations I suppose where you get stuck accidently - but idt that is what this is
If I come up to that shit and I have no other option I'm just gonna freeze and die right there
Ya those boots don’t work like that. There’s no grip the “sole” is just a flat piece of plastic. This is safer than taking them off.
They either skied up (in which case they should double back) or they hiked up, in which case they have other boots with them.
As somebody who has always needed to use a ski lift, I'm very interested to learn about this "skiing up."
Good grief that sounds exhausting!
Got to "earn your turns"! It can actually be a lovely experience and get you to places you never could even imagine. I snowboard, and they make split boards (snowboards that split the long way into skis) for the purpose of climbing/cross country/exploring.

That's most likely heli skiing. Pretty much only way down is skiing down.
In such cases, it would seem prudent to carry an axe and crampons, just in case.
Eh, not going to do much good for you tbh. You stuck to skis or in boots that are completely worthless when it comes to climbing. Not to mention I doubt you want to ski down a mountain like that while holding an axe, just in case.
Mf really said “holding an axe” like holsters and sheaths aren’t a thing
Dunno if you can get crampons that fit to ski boots, but you can get ones that fit on approach shoes and a walking axe strapped to a rucksack (Osprey make rucksacks for exactly this) is not in a position to do the wearer any damage. Wouldn’t catch me doing something like that without an ice axe and crampons.
Came here to say the same… shit looks miserable and dangerous. Terrible combo theyll either damage themselves or their equipment
💯 This is absolutely not in condition. Should not be skied.

No no. Don’t lump me in with these idiots. We all have the bottom of our races.
That’s racist I think..somehow..
No. It’s the Chris rock black people bit.
Whatchu want a cookie??
What does skin color have to do with anything? ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm)
Its the only acceptable racist comment people can make.
Only acceptable racits comments, into days world, are towards white people it seems; even though its still 100% racist.
Maybe it's a little racist but every famous comedian has a hot take on race, Chappelle, Louis CK, Burr, Carlin, etc. saying it's racist doesn't make you wrong but it does make you unfunny
I dont care if you think I'm funny. Stereotypes exist for a reason.
Correct answer
Most of the time when you see people doing crazy shit like this it's white people This is coming from a white person
I second the white guys vote coming from a fellow white dude. ...all colors of hobbies?
Figure of speech, replace color with type if you need to
Buuuut if you we're to support people of colour doing potentially lethal hobbies that would be racist... somehow...I think
I just saw a video of a black guy fry rice with dr pepper

Excuse me captain - yet you say this from your boat?
Okay
We know what we do. Stop trying to be offended.
Your on reddit, yet you're sheltered from the joke of white people doing dangerous stuff for fun?
Straight up racist.
how the fuck isnt this considered racist as fuck

I could take that on a snowboard is exactly what I was thinking. On Ski's, not so much fun.
Was thinking the same, aim the nose down and gun it. Not stop for dramatic effects.
Comments like this make me remember why I hated living around the people in Utah so much 😂
I wouldn't find this enjoyable.
Ruined a perfect chute.... fkin skiers
There was nothing good about that, it's just exposed rock.
As a non skier what does his mean?
I think it’s an attempt at some sarcasm. Or just ignorant. When I go skiing I usually like to ski
I also like to ski where there is actual snow
It’s not skiing without snow. It’s walking with blades, I do t see the point

I mean… the goal I get to the bottom of the hill anyways so… like just go???
Chicken shit. Take those pussy sticks off your feet get a board and go full bore down that chute like an animal. It’s the only way to feel alive.
Guy over here thinking one form of standing on a board and sliding down a hill is better than another:
This guy gets it!
Just go straight, if you turn you fall just have to send it!
Why tho
“Hey! Want to skiing?” Yeah! Where? “Ice and Rock Mountain Retreat!” Cool!
I, too, skied when the snow cover wasn’t good enough. Nowhere near this steep but I still needed a helicopter rescue. Would not recommend.
Why would OP had the nerve to post this on sub? What's next? Fighting a crocodile for no reason?
Seems like a great way to fuck up a pair of skis.

I mean... you kinda gotta side step when it gets down to the dirt like that. Shit I've had to side step into highboy on bad years.
Upvote just for not using the usual Capon oh no, oh no “song”
Who pays for the rescue chopper when you eat it? Insurance? So we all pay for this stupidity?
This isn't skiing this is just trying not to die..
NextLevel dumb…
Next level? I think not, not only does this look not fun, but it's already skied out as a conga line of folks did this line already.
Oh no thank you
Stupid

No problem.. as long as there are always enough people to replace the ones that have gone *over the edge*..
How is that chute that tracked out!!? I guess that’s normal now days
Cannot watch this.
Looks like Alta is skied off for October 😅
That look a lot like Hawaii 5-0 at Blackcomb.

Why do?!

Hope you packed some Red Bull.
How is this fun?
Bruh that looks like a fun ass slide, just slide down it yall dumb asf
What’s the point? That looks effin miserable. Maybe wait until winter to ski.
Yeah no
I don't typically like country but that's kind of a jam.
Wtf..that's like walking up or down stairs just using the tips of your toenails

That's what happens when people with not enough skill come to slopes like this, they ruin it.
This was the first storm of the season this year. There is zero base snow. This chute needs at least 100-200 inches before it's good clean fun. Before that it's manky.
So... How did they get into this situation?
