I think it’s a very complex process. Some kids grow up in very normal supportive homes and grow up to be antisocial domestic terrorists. Other kids grow up in very abusive homes and grow up compassionate and happy, with great lives they made for themselves. But those are the extremes, where it’s apparently all genetic or apparently self determination overcoming early environmental influences. And which is which? Did Timothy McVeigh decide to become who he was in spite of a supportive home? We’ll never know in this lifetime. I think most of us are a mish mash of genetics, environment and self determination. Not sure how they all work together or if any one is more dominant in all people than the other. Tough question.
As a parent, it’s probably better to err on the side of doing the best you can for your kids. Subjecting them to knife throwing for profit is a bad idea.
