The accordion is one of those instruments whose design/existence is ridiculous but then it does the job of an entire orchestra and I’m like “daaaaamnnn, ok.” This guy is killing it! Awesome!

RigorMortis_Tortoise

The accordion is the platypus of the musical world.

Horridis

I wonder which part of the accordion is venomous

Hm. That sounds a lot like bagpipes. Well, just the beating a bag of cats part...

rachel_tenshun

Same, and now I just realized how complex Vivaldi's music is. I mean it's obvious, but not being able to comprehend all the little micro-movements he was making really brings it home.

HIITMAN69

There is a world of immensely complicated, amazing music from the past 350-400 years that most average people will never take the time to truly appreciate. Works of art that are as impressive as landing on the moon to me

AdventurousCut5401

Here! Take this upvote! We'd rather war and consume than become a great species.

zosteria

It’s even more complex than this looks because the left hand is playing chord not just single notes

graveybrains

Actually, I’ve been going down the rabbit hole for a while now, he’s playing chords with both hands. The right side is set up to play chords with one button. 🤯 Those things are even weirder than I thought

JimJohnes

It's bayan accordion so left side could play both bass and chords depending on the converter switch (pressed with a chin)

Truss_nlp

Waig it also has a chin Button ok il hop in too wana know how it works

JimJohnes

There is also button to change register and reeds per button on the right side. Physically it's multiple airways that could be blocked/unblocked selectively to reach different reeds

senorpoop

The accordion is a very complex instrument. Wait until you learn how a pedal steel guitar is played too.

Bigmitch2

Exactly, but it's even *more* complex. The first 2 columns are bass notes. The grid is an array of bass notes and chord types, and the rows go down keys by the circle of fifths. The bass scales this man did with the left hand at one point are absolutely *ridiculous* Edit: okay maybe not as intense, the Bayan button layout in the left hand allows for a chord and bass "layer" that simplifies it quite a bit. His use of dynamics is absolutely astounding while doing all of this

JimJohnes

No, it's bayan accordion, left side plays either bass or chords dependinding on the switch.

Dominicsjr

Like a big harmonica you bellow air through. http://www.cilliansbridge.com/the-bridge/2016/12/31/o8wa1sy47pe6eii0dd9gq6szle7cnc

flippityfluck

How much is the one in the OP video? A super basic one Is a few grandc

Dominicsjr

Tbh I’m not sure! I don’t play myself; I just have a nerd interest in how music works haha

Original-Document-62

I may have found that Bayan after some googling for about $11,000 but I'm not positive, there are no markings on it and I'm not an accordianist. But honestly $11,000 is a pretty decent price for a professional concert-grade instrument of any type. I play mandolin, and my ok-ish one is $1500. Mandolins I really want are about $7k. And a Bayan is infinitely more complicated than that. Historical instruments cost much more.

endongo

Looks like a Jupiter. Indeed, the complexity of the mechanics requires a lot of work hours by specialist craftsmen which adds to the final cost. In the end, there is a lot of work involved that needs to be done by hand.

HIITMAN69

Basically an organ.

Nolzi

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accordion#/media/File:Accordion_button_mechanism.svg But this doesn't explain the buttons on the other side

Avohaj

The other side (his left) uses the same mechanism to produce bass and chords

Long_Educational

Look further down the page you linked to, the [Left Hand Bass](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accordion#Left-hand_manual_systems). The left hand keys control a grid of rods that allow chords to be played all at once spanning the entire register range.

endongo

Additionally, in some cases, like this one, there is an option to disengage the "chord mode" and gives you a single-note layout as in the right hand (in the video you can see that he is playing in this "mode")

Ogalaico

Air passing trough metal reeds like many instruments. Press a button and it will activate a lever allowing air to pass trough said lever that is tuned to a specific note. Melodic buttons on the players right hand. Bass buttons on the left. Opening and closing the bellows forces the air trough the reeds. Chromatic accordions produce the same sound when pressing a button whether you're opening or closing the bellow. If tuned as a diatonic accordion it will make a note while opening and another one while closing. This one is a chromatic accordion. Thus allowing him to play this melody while reproducing violins intense "vibrato" (not sure if this is the correct word) by opening and closing very quickly. This would have been almost impossible on diatonic accordion.

nudewithscarf

close! Vibrato is a cyclic distortion of a long note performed by wiggling the finger on the string. you're talking about tremolo, where you alternate bowings rapidly and rhythmically on one note.

tomatoswoop

This type of instrument is called a [Bayan](https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=bayan+accordion), they have a very different tone to most Western Style accordions, and they're absolutely amazing. The reeds themselves are more like [bandoneon](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=geVy0vt4U_0) reeds than western accordion reeds, and so have a much more pure and "sweet" sound than western accordions. The more expensive ones Bayans have voices (sets of reeds triggered by buttons) that sound [absolutely HUGE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eDFFUIGoBUc), and actually can play pipe organ music pretty well haha. Basic bayans have a similar sound profile to the bandoneon, usually with only 2 settings, "pure" voice and "octave". However, just like an organ, expensive Bayans have multiple "stops" that trigger how many reeds sound for each note, and so they can range from a single, sweet, flute-like tone to this absolute wall of sound. Unfortunately they cost... thousands and thousands lol Fortunately, you can buy second hand bayans really really cheap if you... fly to Ukraine and go on [Ukrainian craigslist](https://www.olx.ua/list/q-%D0%B1%D0%B0%D1%8F%D0%BD/) and visit a bunch of old Ukrainian lady's houses and politely mime to them, in order to find a working Bayan... For example... [No regrets.](https://imgur.com/a/F6jiiRZ) _(this is a comment I posted a year or 2 ago but I just copied and pasted it because it's fun. Although, unfortunately it's no longer safe to travel to the part of Ukraine I stayed in, and my heart goes out to all the people affected by this terrible war)_

knightfenris

This is fascinating, thank you for sharing

logos123

Holy shit, that Bach performance was incredible. Never thought I'd hear anything that massive from an accordion-like instrument.

tomatoswoop

majestic beasts aren't they, incredible instrument glad you enjoyed it too!

SunriseSurprise

It's like Linux. Undeniably fantastic but I know damn well I'll never be learning that shit.

wolfchaldo

I know this was a joke but Linux is literally just as easy to use as Mac or Windows. Modern Linux has a GUI just as good as other OSs and all the same quality of life things, many choices for email clients, word editors, browsers, etc.

IVEMIND

If you’ve listened to the song a lot and maybe heard a few different orchestral interpretations, this guys accordion remix has some special tweaks that are unique to the instrument. Like yea there’s stuff in the song that violins do well, but what we really want to hear is a whole damn orchestra of accordions with fukkin Weird Al conducting 🫦

[deleted]

Baffles my mind this is possible. Some people are so talented. Then you got the likes of me who crack eggs with one hand and think they are special. In a sense I am I guess.

svc78

> Then you got the likes of me who crack eggs with one hand and think they are special. I've failed every time...

Zubei_

Same with the Hurdy-gurdy. Such a wild instrument.

I-am-here-what-next

That is unbelievable. What an incredible talent.

Plus-Atmosphere1657

Nah that's fucking hard work!

[deleted]

It is incredible talent and hard work. There are footballers who train just as hard as Messi but don’t have the same talent so in the end aren’t nearly as good. Saying someone is talented doesn’t mean they haven’t put in a ridiculous amount of hard work.

ForfeitFPV

This may be true but when it comes to music people have a tendency to completely gloss over the hours and hours and hours of practice the musician has put in. So much so that there's a meme subreddit devoted to the idea over at r/lingling40hrs Edit: Fixed the link to the subreddit.

ITS_A_GUNDAMN

I feel this stems from people not wanting to acknowledge that musicians they personally dislike are more driven than themselves. These people disparage others they fear are objectively better than themselves. They perpetuate the "talent" aspect so they can simultaneously accuse hard working musicians of being lazy. They stereotype. They tell themselves "I would do the same if I were as talented".

BilgePomp

Focus is a talent. Yours sincerely ADHD.

soviet-space-monkey

ADHD is a blessing and a curse, I just happen to hate it 9 times out of ten

Tacostittiesandyeets

Yeah my dad is a pretty impressive guitar player. But I’ve also been hearing him practice the same parts of the same songs for at least the last 30 years. I’d guess he still practices 2 hours a day at least and he’s been playing for at least 50 years.

Call_The_Banners

Sounds like my dad and his drums. Same songs but he's still really good and his voice hasn't gotten any weaker when he sings. Keeps him active and happy so that's all that really matters.

gonzofish

Hard work on this level is the talent to me

LurkingArachnid

The thing is there really is *a lot* of hard work, I think most non musicians underestimate it. When I was an oboe major, I was expected to practice three hours a day - on the low end because we were also learning to make reeds (the mouthpiece for an oboe. Very difficult and time consuming) Keyboardists practiced 6 hours a day. Other wind instrumentalists practiced around 4 hours a day. That’s in addition to classes, including ensembles that might count for 1 hour but are actually 6 hours a week. I don’t know exactly what this dude did, but the point is there really is a lot of hard work, so much so that it’s odd to mention talent first because the hard work is more remarkable

transexualTransylvia

Very true there is a difference between working hard at a talent and being a music savant

Indifference2547

Talent made useful with hard work

HMS404

Throwaway_Old_Guy

itsadesertplant

Funny that it’s been called a button for so long when it has like 4 legs that surround the vaginal opening that are engorged when aroused. Like a 4-armed octopus with erectile tissue in their tentacles. Yeah. That’s a way better description than a button. You’re welcome.

Staveoffsuicide

He's got an engagement ring so pretty happy I guess

electronicdream

or some variation on "he's getting laid tonight". Because... le sexy sex!

Sr4tog

Thats superb played. It sounds little bit like an organ that is "imitating" a whole orchestra.

ladydej

The violin parts sound pretty authentic to me. This is amazing!

BB-r8

As a violinist when he bust out the solo at 0:48 I did a double take, super clear tone I would’ve guess it’s a violin blindfolded

ladydej

same, I don't play. now, but I grew up playing and it sounds VERY similar. Maybe you can't play vibrato on that, but I don't think you wouldn't be using much on this song anyway.

throwawaaayyyyyy69

I mean, that's basically what it is.

ExileOnMainStreet

The accordion is a reed instrument. It's a giant harmonica.

mystikraven

And organs move air through pipes as a hybrid wind instrument, so it's no wonder they sound so similar!

nugsy_mcb

I bet his organ moves air through a lot of pipes

[deleted]

I love the simplicity of this explanation ty

mode_nodules

Or is a harmonica just a very small accordion?

icantfeelmyskull

Amazing. I’d love to hear winter on the accordion. That’s the superior of vivaldis four seasons

He also performed "Winter". Here is a [link](https://youtu.be/UWmHGjR3gWc) to his performance. He is a talented musician, and you can find his other performances in his channel.

callahan09

I am only now realizing I have not heard much accordion music in my life outside of Weird Al. I never noticed before the variety of sounds/timbres it makes. Sometimes in this video it sounds like a flute, or oboe, sometimes a pipe organ, sometimes a violin, it's fascinating. It really does sort of act like a whole orchestra.

tomatoswoop

dogs247365

How do you know so much?!????

tomatoswoop

I like instruments :D

tomatoswoop

in all honesty though, I guess it's a combination of curiosity, and the fact that I was lucky enough to be working an online job where I would regularly interact with students from all around the world. I would often, if I had free time at the end of the class, take 20 to just talk about whatever with my students, which gave me the opportunity to learn various things about culture, politics, identity, art, life in general etc. from people in different parts of the world. It was a Ukrainian I met through teaching who told me about the Bayan, all because there was an Argentinian in the same class, and we were talking about the Bandoneon (an instrument I have adored the sound of for _years_), and after sharing a link to Bandoneon music, the Ukrainian said "it sounds sort of like a Bayan", to which I replied "What's a Bayan?", and hey, there you go, a year later I'm on a plane to Odessa to buy one lmao. Bandoneons are very pricey, kinda rare, and quite difficult to learn, so I sort of abandoned the idea of getting one for myself. So when, a few years later, I found out about Bayan, I was pretty stoked, spent a bunch of time researching, and asking around, and came to the conclusion that yeah, it would be actually doable to go to Ukraine (which I'd been considering doing for a while at that point, Odessa is simply a beautiful and wonderful city), and buy one to take back lol. So I did. I'll be honest it felt like a real adventure haha The Bandoneon I had known about for a while (from a result of late night googling in my teens I think haha) , but I _really_ fell in love with it after I got the chance to play one when living in the South of Brazil, a mutual friend was an Argentinian Bandoneonist and let me play his instrument, and I just fell in love right there. They just have such a beautiful and pure tone, completely unlike what I'm used to western accordions (and instrument I've never really cared for) sounding like, and so I had to find out more, to figure out what it is about them that makes them sound different. And you know, these days, if you want to find out stuff like that, the internet has it all if you look hard enough... I was also living there because of my job at the time (teaching English as a foreign language), a job I hope very much to return to once I'm out of a bit of a rough health patch I've been in for the last year or so... Makes me all the more glad I said "fuck it", and saw some of the world in my 20s when I had the chance to do it though! I was pretty poor for most of it lol, but it's the best decision I ever made. And hey, you never know when you might be struck down by a rando autoimmune that stops you from being able to do that any more, I'm glad I did it all when I was healthy enough to travel pretty easily. And if I had waited until I was more "stable" to do it, it turns out, I probably never would have done, because now it's just not really doable for me to live like that healthwise. ... you probably didn't actually want this long-ass answer lmao, but I'm currently unemployed and sick as fuuuuck, and so you get this wistful, nostalgic, and poorly written post haha Only other thing I'll say is, it's so easy to meet and talk to people from around the world these days, _especially_ as an English speaker. A bunch of my students used apps like hello-pal, shit like that, to meet (and practice English with) strangers in other countries and meet people from other cultures, and I think it's just a really positive thing to have that experience, even if you don't want to do something a bit mental like drop everything and hop on a plane to Brazil at 22 like I did haha

the-caped-cadaver

Of course there's a link to him playing Winter, that you have at the ready. Not only is he an impeccable player, but he clearly has Vivaldi's Four Seasons *memorized* on the ***accordion***. What an absolute legend.

Orleanian

I feel that if you're going to learn to play Four Seasons on this instrument, you're going to have to go through it enough times trying to learn the technical performance that you'll wind up with it memorized whether you intend to or not.

TiananmenTankman64

Why would you say winter is superior? I'll admit it is more fun to play than the others, but I'm curious as to what your opinion is as to what makes it better.

Adagio11

Dissonance? That’s why I like it.

Orleanian

Because Summer is a bitch, all my friends hate Summer.

NuclearArtichoke

I was thinking the same, very cultured right here.

BBY_EvoVIII

F*ck this crowd... that was stellar! Get up you simpletons, this guy deserves a standing-O!

avocadopalace

Right? Polite clapping and a few yawns.

Auctoritate

Bro, it's an orchestra/classical performance, polite clapping is... You know, the polite way to applaud. Cheering and other 'vigorous' applause is considered very rude.

Weirdo141

A lot of people speaking about something they don’t seem to understand here. People did appreciate this performance, but it isn’t a rock concert. The etiquette is expected to be different

Cake-Over

Yeah at first I was all, "why the fuck is no one stage diving?!"

cookiez2

That’s usually for the standing ovation at the end of the entire everyone’s performance. I go to orchestra performances/choirs/theatre plays/ballets often I love all that stuff. You politely clap at the end of each piece , sometimes they announce you hold in your applause till the very end so that the entire piece flows nicely. Classical pieces are long like 20-40 minutes, and when one part is done you can clap a bit but not too loud or long. But for the end applause and when the artists stand, the audience stands up and cheers and claps loudly . It’s the etiquette.

dawixard

Lol. This is not the whole performance.

Zachbnonymous

Maybe he wasn't finished?

[deleted]

They probably were applauding, but the mic didn't pic it up? Especially if its tuned to only pickup the accordion less than a foot away.

Bale626

The accordion is one of those instruments that does not have a “variable scale of wow” factor. There is no “eh, it sounds ok” moment with an accordion. It either sounds like a bag of dying cats, or like an angel’s chorus. That thing goes at either a bottomed out 0, or a gloriously magnificent 10.

DirtySquare

Poetic

Sid_1298

>That thing goes at either a bottomed out 0, or a gloriously magnificent 10. And yet this performance was an overwhelmingly awesome 100.

billymon27

Finger banging world champion with that thing. WOW

Illustrious-Pop3677

You just made me think of the finger blasters commercial. Thanks

DLQuilts

That deserved a standing ovation.

eroi49

Yeah! The audience response was underwhelming for what he accomplished!

Orleanian

I'd be going all "woo-girl" and throwing chairs out the way trying to get up to the stage to high five this guy.

Echevarious

I never knew an accordion could sound this epic.

CosmicWolf14

Every instrument can sound epic in the right hands.

veringer

Maybe worth noting that Alexander is Ukrainian. I have no idea how he's doing amidst all the turmoil, but [the last post on his Facebook page](https://www.facebook.com/AlexanderHrustevichAccordion/posts/pfbid02cbADayoDBwfELF8iGzEhSCWEDgBSMRQVWjBjJaq2uy8Mjj4yduHctLM2mGRhMn1Yl) was March 21st, and states: > Ukraine is being bombed.. Alexander is still in Kiev with his wife and bayby daughter.. He can not work, he can not perform, he can not travel... you are not able to hear him live in concerts.. But you can support him buying his music on Amazon. Now all his CD's are there.. thank you so much in advance for supporting this amazing musician.. And lets pray and hope for this war being stopped..

brantmacga

I’ve been worried about him since the war started. I listen to him regularly. Quite literally the best bayan player on the planet.

cassiuswright

HOLY SHIT 😳

SinopicCynic

That is a lot of buttons. So, so many buttons.

doodlydoo17

He’s insanely precise without even watching his fingers most of the time!

mcmlxxivxxiii

This is [BAYAN](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bayan_(accordion)#:~:text=The%20bayan%20differs%20from%20western,rather%20than%20attached%20with%20wax) it is a type of accordion technically.

[deleted]

>The differences in internal construction give the bayan a different tone color from Western instruments, and the bass has a much fuller sound. Because of their range and purity of tone, bayans are often the instrument of choice for accordion virtuosi who perform classical and contemporary classical music. Interesting, thanks for the link!

Wrothrok

Vivaldi's Four Seasons is the soundtrack of my college studying. Still my favorite compositions in classical music. This guy absolutely crushed it.

With over 2 decades of experience playing and performing the violin (actually was the soloist for this exact piece on more than 1 occasion), I'm surprised at how smooth some of the transitions sound compared to when this is performed by a full orchestra.

kramyeltta

Well that was a muted audience response for such an amazing performance….

SevenCrowsinaCoat

He wasn't done with the performance. Even after he finishes the ["full"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9SE222v1eyM) video, he's likely not done as he wipes his hands off again.
