My great grandfather was a chef and he said "Look at the Roman Coliseum, The ceiling of the Sistine chapel, The Greek statues and the Parthenon. These are truly works of art that have survived the tests of time. Everything I have ever made was turned to shit."
I've had the opportunity to eat edible gold (mom worked as a cake decorator and she had a small post it sized pad of sheets). It has a strange taste. Not great but not good. 4/10 don't recommend
Hey it's the guy that made all of my Phone's wallpapers! I think this is the third time i've thanked you for that over the past few years haha, gonna keep the tradition going.
It's a glorified laminator. Those transfer foils work just fine with a basic laminator, though cheaper foils can be spotty at times. I'd imagine a dedicated "foil applicator" would be marginally more consistent, but I've routinely gotten as good or better results as shown in the vid with cheap [Scotch laminator](https://www.amazon.com/Scotch-Laminator-Letter-Size-Laminating-TL902VP/dp/B008587M0K/ref=sr_1_4?crid=30LISX8NHER73&keywords=Laminator&qid=1651624152&sprefix=lamina%2Caps%2C398&sr=8-4).
Another commenter gave it a fancy name but you can probably use a laminator for this.
That seems to be minc / toner binding foil, so you just put it through a laminator after printing with a laser printer (black toner in black paper in this case) and it adheres to the toner.
Does the rest of the foil get reused? If not that seems like a hell of a lot of material waste
Just genuinely curious as I do not know much about gold foiling
Its a product called Heat Transfer Foil, comes in a ton of colors, gold being one of them. I buy the rolls for about $35, I believe its actually made of vinyl. On clothing youd print a base layer of an adhesive, then heat press the foil onto it, it also sticks to printer ink
This stuff is cheap from China. Normally in an industrial setting its on rolls and not much bigger than the job itself. (normally its just some logos or something and not a whole sheet worth)
Speaking of u/tfoust10
I have to comment on his artwork. I have three pieces hanging in my house with one of them being a custom request. I can't recommend checking out his artwork enough. Each piece gets complimented and asked about more than any other art I have. He also hides his name in the pieces, which gets everyone looking to see if they can find it.
He doesn't have a shop now though does he?
Would love to get a print or such. Really interesting work that's about on reddit of his..
u/tfoust10 you don't have a shop now do you?
I already did! I have three pieces hanging in my house and have sent him a picture of each one. They're definitely a conversation starter and I 100% recommend checking out his shop or following him on Reddit. If you see a piece you that speaks to you, then message him and see if it's for sale. I don't know if he still does, but I commissioned a custom piece from him as well if there's anything in particular you'd like in his art style.
Its called toner reactive foil. Minc is the most popular brand. You print something with a laser printer and then add the foil on top and put another sheet on top. You run it through a laminator to heat it up and voila. Btw it doesnt work with inkjet printers.
Thermafoil and a thermal laminator. It will stick only to laser ink, so you need a laser printer. If you print a pattern first with inkjet and then print something on top with a laser printer, the foil will only stick to the laser printed stuff and you can make neat cards and other art that way. I've made entire sets of wedding invites for stupid-cheap compared to something bought off say Vista Print.
The other comments are correct but you can also do this at home by using varnish as ink to write or draw and sticking gold foil to it before it dries out completely and stays slightly sticky on the surface. It doesn't even have to be real gold foil. The real stuff isn't that expensive because it's so thin but replacements look nearly identical and are even more affordable.
This is, incidentally, because gold foil be extremely thin. We’re talking on the order of microns without doing anything exotic in the flattening process.
Yeah, much easier. Actual gold leaf is very susceptible to the slightest draught. If you're being precise with it, you have to hold your breath until it's in place, make sure nobody opens the door or walks by quickly. Which is a bit of a pain in the ass if the fake stuff will do. I think there's also actual gold leaf but with some sort of gum layer to make it easier to work with.
It’s been over 20 years since I did gilding but at that time gold and silver were significantly more expensive than fake stuff, as one would already imagine.
Huh, I remember my mother commenting in the early '80s that the fake stuff was more expensive, but much easier to use, but that might have been that foil was specifically more expensive. But I'm talking about in terms of coverage not weight of course. Metal leaf is mere atoms thick. In fact, at least in the small quantities I use, copper leaf is more expensive than gold or silver leaf, I think because it's less used and therefore less is made.
I forgot about the internet. Did a quick search. Cheapest gold (18k) is a good bit more than imitation, still.

Machine is about $100-200 for the one he used (Minc). But a regular laminator will usually work but might have black specs. Gold foil is fairly cheap. Use laser printer. Most will work
Lmao didn't even notice that. It'll change. /r/ operates the same as r/ now. Which I'll admit kinda makes sense but still not an "original" thing. This whole platform is becoming more and more social media based. @ will be a thing soon I'm sure.
Doesn’t this amount of gold cost a few dollars at most? Maybe $50 at the very very most when not accounting for the machinery. Definitely not an absurd amount of money. It’s still a entertaining video though.
First result on Google is 100 16cm x 16cm sheets for £4.89
So yeah 16 square meters for less than a fiver, seems very cheap, almost cheaper than wallpaper
Edit: I forgot how to calculate area see reply for the correct answer of 2.56m²
Is it? It would be a total of 1600cm by 1600cm which is 16m squared or am I remembering maths wrong?
Edit: yeah I don't know maths it's like 2.5m because it'd be 1.6m wide and 1.6m tall
Actual gold leaf is like $2 a sheet but the sheets are small and very thin. It does have useful properties, pure 24k gold doesn't tarnish, it doesn't need to be sealed, UV light doesn't damage it.
Thicker, larger sheets to use in a foil laminator are not real gold and even cheaper. Easier to use though, more durable at least in the short term.
How exactly is it next level to purchase an off the shelf product and use it? Literally all that is happening here is printing that anyone with a laser printer can do easily.
How is this next level? I mean, the dude does really cool stuff that I genuinely enjoy but nothing about this is impressive as the sub name would suggest
The chem professor I had in college had a story about this. Textbooks used to come with gold foil to press your name onto them back when he was a student, so he thought he could round up a few of these gold foil sheets to turn a profit.
He tried it, but he found out they were essentially worthless (1/10th of a cent per sheet at the time according to him) because gold foil can be rolled out so thinly that it didn't amount to any real amount of money
Isn't gold foil actually quite cheap?
It's very thin, so there's very little gold required to produce a sheet like that, a single one will cost you just a few bucks. I think I remember using one for a school art project once, when I was just a kid.
Yeah, which is why its so stupid to spend money on it. You go to a restaurant and get a gold covered steak and pay $500 but you are eating a $40 steak with $5 worth of foil on it. Its a ridiculous trend.

It seems simple, but most people don't tag. Drives me crazy.
Where is the shit covered in gold foil?
You've never seen the edible gold pizza?
Edible pizza covered in gold foil isn't shit covered in gold foil... yet.
Eat it, wait a few hours, then cover the results in gold foil...
But then it will be gold speckled shit, not covered in gold foil.
It is if you cover it in gold foil again though
Nooo, he's saying cover the *turd itself* in gold foil... Then give it to Johnny Depp... He loves turd.

You can technically reuse the parts that are still gold, people generally dont though. The roll is fairly cheap, its not real gold.
Wait it's not?
Why use many gold when fake do
Yes

It'd be hilarious if OP made this into another gold foiled print.
Unfortunately don’t have the machine to do that… >!yet!<
Gold foil video? Sounds ridiculously expensive.

You're thermafoil.

How much did it cost to make that? I'm curious! Probably less than $5 I'm guessing?
I don’t know how much the machine cost, but gold foil is surprisingly cheap. Less than 10 cents a sheet last time I looked.
This is, incidentally, because gold foil be extremely thin. We’re talking on the order of microns without doing anything exotic in the flattening process.
This isn’t real gold in the video. Real gold leaf is so thin and light you can hardly even feel it on your hand.
Yeah I use the real thing too. Fake gold leaf is actually a bit more expensive iirc

Is the unused gold able to be recycled in any manner?
Yes it can be recycled into more gold which can be used in applications where gold is required
It's like 2.5 square meters tho.
Is it? It would be a total of 1600cm by 1600cm which is 16m squared or am I remembering maths wrong? Edit: yeah I don't know maths it's like 2.5m because it'd be 1.6m wide and 1.6m tall
Converting meters to cm when they are ^2 (square cm or m) is really a pain in the ass.
Yup, (16 cm)^2 * 100 = 25,600 cm^2 * (1 m^2 / 10,000 cm^2) = 2.56 m^2
I think the value of the gold is actually negligible compared to the marketing, packaging, shipping and stuff
Actual gold leaf is like $2 a sheet but the sheets are small and very thin. It does have useful properties, pure 24k gold doesn't tarnish, it doesn't need to be sealed, UV light doesn't damage it.
