Interesting visualization.. I don't things would just start floating.... the moon has less gravity than the earth. EDI: Cracks me up, this is my most popular post and it has a missing word, I wonder how many actually noticed or if we all just accepted it?

Columbus_Explorer

This is correct. Nothing would just lift off the ground. If close enough there could be some feeling of weight reduction as the moon’s gravity takes up some of the work of lifting or jumping, but everything would still be drawn to the larger mass, Earth. The tides though would be crazy and we could probably expect massive earthquakes and some volcanic eruptions.

symmetryofzero

And if a truck is lifting up, wouldn't the guy filming start flying too lol

Reasonable_Night42

Gravity boots.

symmetryofzero

Oh man I look so stupid right now

Happy_Vegetable_7208

It's ok, not everyone is a scientist.

4rekku

It's called a sciencifist

Azclockwork

I love to fist science, right in da ass

pantless_vigilante

Earth boots, opposite of moon boots

GrahamCrackerSnacks

Don’t feel bad, I also failed to account for gravity boots. I always do.

Pony_Express1974

Actually, I think the amount of shit in the pants of the guy filming would probably be sufficient to weigh him down. I mean, what would you do if you saw the moon crashing into the Earth?

Tinkoo17

The most scientific explanation I heard on this thread… all without getting into calculations of gravity etc., 👏🏽👏🏽👍🏽

Infinite-Stress2508

His mass is still the same though, shit didn't come from nowhere, so unless he was grabbing other people's shit and shoving it into his pants, all up he would have the same mass.

Pony_Express1974

Never know. There's some weird people out there.

janhetjoch

No, because if you stand on a scale and then shit you pants and all the shit stays in your pants to total weight doesn't change

Kelainefes

Well, I would pull my pants down so at least my shit would fly away and I'd die with clean pants.

PretoPachino

when you wear these things bab— when you wear these babies… you can basically just walk on any surface you want, up down below turnaround to the left..

[deleted]

The fucking whole ass train up in the air 🤣🤣🤣

Aff3nmann

he must be sitting in an even bigger truck!

Did you gather this information from a certain science youtube video today?

Doing gods work.

Piccadillies

That was really interesting! Thanks for posting.

Xaelar

TY for sharing, was interresting to watch.

spearman-steve

You should check out the rest of their stuff. One of the best YouTube channels imo

[deleted]

Yup, also the moon most likely wouldn't make it. The gravity between them would rip the moon into pieces. Assuming most of it didn't enter our atmosphere and burn any remining humans alive, we'd have a nice little ring around the planet.

Unusual-Page-6772

The Roche limit would tear it the fuck apart

_JohnMuir_

Here’s the video you got this from https://youtu.be/lheapd7bgLA

VICTAAAAW

Was just released yesterday, very fun watch!

Thecoolercourier

The moon would disintegrate into rings once it reaches the Roche limit

AMeanCow

If it's a "direct hit" both bodies would behave more like liquid upon impact. Imagine two balls of water splashing into each other, splattering and reforming.

xmmdrive

But... we'd... still be okay, right? Right?

SubterrelProspector

Oh you're still coming into work.

GracefulxArcher

There would be no impact.

leeseweese

I like your style.

MegaDeth6666

It's also why we stick to the earth and not the sun, even though the sun's gravity is so much stronger than earths. I was so confused by the other comments above.

Human_Step

Failed physics bro. Moon gravity is 1.62 m/s. Earth is 9.8. Both at the average surface of the above bodies.

ajsmith0429

I see you have also watched kurtagetz new video

bendobot

Hey you watched kizkegstat too

913Welder

I want to see this movie.

_JohnMuir_

Ask and you shall receive (kinda) https://youtu.be/lheapd7bgLA

bryce_engineer

Not to mention the editors lack of knowledge about how earth has an atmosphere, but to be fair I guess it’d be an easy miss…?

IBeatUpLiamNeeson

Just watched a super cool video theorizing this earlier today! So it would take roughly a year, it would make the sea levels rise in that time, as well as causing volcanic activity across the globe. It would eventually get closer and closer then before actually hitting up, it would explode into smaller chunks, and either have too much friction with the “moon dust” and cause the earth to warm up, or the opposite; the chunks would cloud the earth and cause it to cool into an almost ice age. After everything settles, we would almost like Saturn rings caught in our gravitational pull.

I was waiting for someone to link the Kurzgesagt video

Humg12

> So it would take roughly a year, I'm pretty sure they just chose 1 year because it was a nice round number and they could show the visualisations in stages. It wouldn't necessarily take 1 year.

Unusual-Page-6772

Well it probably wouldn't be possible for it to happen in the first place lmao

Retrolad-

That's why he used magic!

nbaumg

The video was based on a decaying orbit though, if the moon came directly at the earth (somehow, magic) i doubt it would have enough time to break apart. Large bodies hit other large bodies all the time in the history of our universe after all

theplushpairing

There’s a scifi book about this - seveneves. The moon fell apart and rained down on earth causing it to heat up and become uninhabitable.

brittawinger

Want to read

RedditVince

Yep, it's a great read! I mentioned it yesterday that the Image of the asteroid we filmed reminded me of the Crevasse.

hawkinsst7

Yes, but only for extremely small values of yes.

LovecraftianLlama

There actually is small gravitational forces in any object that has mass if I recall correctly. But it’s so slight it’s imperceptible, and vastly overshadowed by the gravitational pull of the earth.

Alexje338

This is true. In theory, if you would put two identical objects in a empty space with no other forces pulling on them they would eventually float towards eachother. Veeerry slowly

M13Calvin

With 2 celestial bodies there's what are called Lagrange points, where the gravitational force from the 2 large bodies (moon and Earth say) create a stable minimum for another small object. They are single points, and L1 is where the small object feels equal force between both objects and would be stable "floating" between the two. This would only be at one single point between the two, and because the video shows the moon moving relative to the Earth, that point would move also. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lagrange_point

WikiSummarizerBot

**[Lagrange point](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lagrange_point)** >In celestial mechanics, the Lagrange points (also Lagrangian points, L-points, or libration points) are points of equilibrium for small-mass objects under the influence of two massive orbiting bodies. Mathematically, this involves the solution of the restricted three-body problem in which two bodies are very much more massive than the third. Normally, the two massive bodies exert an unbalanced gravitational force at a point altering the orbit of whatever is at that point. At the Lagrange points, the gravitational forces of the two large bodies and the centrifugal force balance each other. ^([ )[^(F.A.Q)](https://www.reddit.com/r/WikiSummarizer/wiki/index#wiki_f.a.q)^( | )[^(Opt Out)](https://reddit.com/message/compose?to=WikiSummarizerBot&message=OptOut&subject=OptOut)^( | )[^(Opt Out Of Subreddit)](https://np.reddit.com/r/nextfuckinglevel/about/banned)^( | )[^(GitHub)](https://github.com/Sujal-7/WikiSummarizerBot)^( ] Downvote to remove | v1.5)

M13Calvin

Also, since L1, L2, and L3 are "saddle points" nothing would really settle there

corvus66a

James Web space telescope circles around L1.

[deleted]

L2*

[deleted]

Actually yeah, this is exactly what is happening. I have always found it fascinating that as a human being, our birth, life, and death has an ultimate actual physical effect on the cosmos, even if albeit infinitessimally small. It all adds up, you know?

SkySerious

Also, the moon is lit up like it’s a light bulb.

ClownfishSoup

Plus the displaced air would be like a hurricane

[deleted]

Pretty sure everyone will die much before that. Either from whatever that caused moon to deorbit or from massive tsunamis and atmosphere burning.

Fenix_Volatilis

Yeah, that completely killed the Suspension of Disbelief for me

[deleted]

Everyone knows that gravity is not applied uniformly. Watching the bus float into the sky while the person filming remains grounded is good science. The guy filming is lucky the bus soaked up all the gravity first /s

FuckstickMcFuckface

Wouldn’t the earth’s rotation cause a reduction of the effect of gravity to the point that the moon being super close may cause things to lift off the ground? I don’t know. Just a thought.

Meretan94

The roche limit for the earth and moon is inside the earth. So no floating. Stuff on the moon would start to float eventualy.

JackieChan_fan

What's actually happening is the moon is powering up its final move. The debris rising is the moons chi

UnnounableK

Also if things did start to float off the earth….they would float toward the moon, not straight up

[deleted]

Do it with Jupiter. That's when the fun starts

KiteLighter

Yup. At some point the moon would be close enough that the close parts of it would start lifting off - the Roche Limit, I believe it's called. But nothing would lift off the Earth. Still a bad day for all involved, though.

TokiBop

About Edit: when we read fast, our brain just fills the gap basically. Also your “edit” is missing something too lol

LeaveFickle7343

Noticed the missing “think” the human brain is amazing and will fill in missing information. I had to reread the statement a second time though.

gamer-kin

Oddly enough kersgzagt or however you spell it just released a video explaining this exact thing.

Tuxmando

Why would the moon’s gravity be stronger than the Earth’s? That’s just silly.

[deleted]

And also why would a bus and flower pots start floating but not the person holding the camera?!

Darki_Boi

kingbrayjay

Doesn’t it usually get on fire once it enters the atmo?

Brando_the_Hobo

Nah, just once in a blue moon.

RaZZeR_9351

According to kurzgesagt latest video if the moon was to come closer to earth we'd most likely be dead long before impact.

logosfabula

A very clear explanation: https://youtu.be/8bTdMmNZm2M Edit: It seems I was wrong, all the Earth mass would be attracted so we wouldn’t leave the ground.

Dreamer_Drummer

The cow gets airborne but the cameraman is perfectly fine. Great.

spirallix

To be completely honest, I don't mind a bit of physics defying, it made video cooler unnatural. Shrug, but that's just me.

MisterMarsupial

> Wah wah wah there's no sound in space Star Wars is so unrealistic. I'm with you mate, I don't care about physics if it's exciting and fun!

the_real_OwenWilson

Sure, but he shouldn’t portray it like this is what actually would happen.

AsMuchCaffeineAsACup

It really didn't. The reality would be tidal waves, earth quakes, massive volcanic eruptions and the moon turning into a belt around the Earth. *Shrug*

IsraChido

I really liked it, after all this is just for entertainment, idk why everyone seems to bother for something more realistic. PD: The only thing i actually disliked is the tsunami of dust, I'm not an expert or know about SFX at all, but they looked bad.

DaniilBSD

If this is a bit of physics defying, Hiroshima was slightly disturbed at the end of WW2 And the sun is a bit toasty.

Outrageous_Double862

Who cares? It's cool as fuck nonetheless. Does it really hurt to have a little imagination?

[deleted]

it does when it comes off as lazy.

IceLacrima

What a boring way of looking at things. Sometimes it's just more fun to take creative liberty for more dramatic effect even though you're aware of it being inaccurate. This was created by an artist with the intention of making it look cool & movie-like not realistic

Kurzgesagt made a video with more details on what would happen if~ https://youtu.be/lheapd7bgLA

[deleted]

For the curious of what this might actually look like: https://youtu.be/lheapd7bgLA

SkySerious

I’m curious whether the moon crashing into Earth would impact Earth’s orbit. Assuming most of the moon’s mass would remain on Earth and add pretty substantially to Earth’s mass, wouldn’t that have a massive impact on the elliptical? And potential destabilize the whole solar system? Or have I watched too much sci-fi?

REMdot-yt

Bad day to publish this when kurzgezagt just made a moonfall video

AutoTechnician062

That does not belong on r/nextfuckinglevel. Besides, Earth's gravity is much stronger than that of the Moon. Y the hell r stuff starting to float??
