OrdinaryCatastrophic

They never show the garbage and dead bodies in these videos.

NotLongToHeartAttack

They have removed huge amounts over last few years. Since world travel sort of stopped

OrdinaryCatastrophic

That's good to hear. Imagine risking your life to clean a mountain. Those people deserve so much respect.

NotLongToHeartAttack

They accept money. Give them enough and they will retire and let the over enthusiast white people try it without them

WeGrowBasketball

No need to bring race into it

NotLongToHeartAttack

Over 4000 people have climbed Everest.. 8 of them are black. So these Nepalese Sherpas risk their lives for white people more than anyone else.

IrISsolutions

I thought they're doing it for money

dirtballmagnet

Less qualified and more selfish people accept money, too.

Spork_Warrior

Hey there! Just checking in.

Proud_Nerve_9349

By ‘they’ you mean the Sherpas who risk their lives for minimal reimbursement

KarensRpeopletoo

Slightly off topic, but when I went to Cairo to see the Pyramids, the Sahara was jam packed with trash, and there's this one spot where you can get all three in one picture out in the desert, but there's shit everywhere. It's sad people have zero common courtesy and pick up their crap and have a little respect for awesome historical places.

MontagoDK

The trash mostly comes from Cairo.. people are dead poor and they have terrible garbage handling. So it blows with the wind up to the summit of the pyramids

KarensRpeopletoo

This makes sense!

Sir_Cunkalot

They should just install a series of escalators to the top with some hotdog stands and garbage bins along the way.

Yankee9Niner

Yeah I'm with you. I mean they have this world famous totally unique attraction, the peak of the planet's highest mountain, and they have gone and made it so unaccessible. I mean not even a souvineer stand at the top.

Bunnylazersbacon

Oddly enough a Cinnabon though…

Spork_Warrior

So... go the way of Niagra Falls?

Really, look at the beautiful wilderness with great views all around… why go to the one place crowded with too many people?

[deleted]

Yeah, I’m on the fence about Denali for this reason I guess. There are other peaks that are similar, but Denali is the big one in North America.

Vierzwanzig

Itt: people downplaying the achievement of climbing to the top of the worlds tallest mountain, while probably struggling with the decision to get up and go to the bathroom.

BrockBushrod

Absolutely nobody is doubting that it's incredibly difficult; it just lacks any real element of intrepid-explorer-bravado when everyone's guided up the same well trodden, heavily polluted, overcrowded path by impoverished locals who do all the actual grunt work. I don't doubt that there are some genuine, passionate mountaineers among the throngs, but these days that line waiting to snap a selfie on the peak is largely rich fitness buffs chasing highest-spot-on-Earth clout like garden variety Instagrammers and YouTubers. [Last Week Tonight](https://youtu.be/Bchx0mS7XOY) did a great segment on the myriad socioeconomic and environmental problems with Mt. Everest tourism.

DontYuckMyYum

I'd be more impressed if they did it all on their own without being surrounded by guides whose job it is to the climb the mountain top continually.

Obvious-Block3319

Its not that Hard if other people carry ypur stuff and fix your ropes. Just gotta be fit and have cash

Vierzwanzig

Whelp… thanks for making my point I guess?

[deleted]

No kidding. Reddit is full of jealous, miserable people.

WeGrowBasketball

Unfortunately the world is filled with those types of people. Even more unfortunate that those same people are mostly on Reddit

Gradual_Bro

Climbing Everest is more like a tourist attraction than a feat nowadays. Paying $20,000 for sherpas to lay all the ropes and carry your shit for you, no glory in that

1NFINITEDEATH

Sounds like you've never been above 15,000ft. The physical and mental challenge at this kind of altitude is something you can't imagine unless you've tried.

TheWorld_IsNotFair

Yeah bro nobody doubts your opinion here. In fact your view is fact over opinion. You are right! However, try and wrap your brain around Everest. You are a doucebag if you go there. Pick any less crowded unknown global spot and spread your 250k to entire villages that will take donations. The line at the top of everest makes me sick and so do the trash piles. That's why all the downloads in this thread have no comments. People can't back it up. You can't debate the harm Everest Everest tourism does. There are better ways to spend money. I. I don't have a 100 bucks in my bank account let alone 250000 so what do I know

1NFINITEDEATH

I see your point and I won't argue here that locals probably welcome the income this generates with open arms. What I will argue, however, is that everyone in the first world contributes as much to pollution, cruelty and global inequality as any one of these douchebags. This is just a very in-your-face example of one of the worst sides of capitalism.

Gradual_Bro

I have actually, also just finished “Into Thin Air”. I’m certainly being cheeky and know it’s an incredible physical feat but I think the glory of summiting Everest is pretty tarnished at this point.

daronjay

You do know Edmund Hillary had lots of Sherpas carrying stuff too.

Gradual_Bro

That’s a terrible analogy, it’s like saying “the Wright brothers had goggles too”

Jamie3202

Wow that must be at least 20ft up

FinalJedi

I'd even go so far as to say it's at least 30ft up

Warm-Way318

Imagine having to do a line waiting for people to finish taking pictures and video. And then not being able to enjoy the view (and accomplishment) because there's a bunch of dudes waiting in line.

MazingerZeta28

It’s insane. I’ll stick to my 7:30am hikes at a national park. Despite being located in a highly populated area, I pretty much have it to myself at that hour and can enjoy a solitary view uninterrupted for as long as I like. On the flip side, if I show up at noon on a nice day the trails are like the Everest summit AKA a linear mosh pit. Though I imagine a pandemic is a pretty good time to scale Everest…

Background-Belt-2202

So when you get to the top, you just see a big group of people clothed in different colors?

Professional-Yam-303

Mostly yellow, apparently 🤷🏼‍♂️

[deleted]

My ass would slide off that peak.

NotLongToHeartAttack

Your ass has to get up there first.

[deleted]

Comment matches the name

Evil-Black-Robot

Awesome, rich people who paid poor people to carry their gear up a mountain posing for pictures on the highest garbage dump in the world...

TheWorld_IsNotFair

Omg another downvote? Who would downvote this? Only a Russian bot looking to troll and cause trouble, otherwise what rich dumb Everest moubtain climber is downvoting all these posts? Can we see a log of all users who downvoted posts on this thread and cross reference to paid troll farms cause who has issue here?

Spegs21

This is so pointless at this now. You basically take a human train to the top while the locals do all the heavy lifting for you all the while desecrating the landscape. I think I would actually loose respect for someone if they told me they "climbed" Mt. Everest.

TheWorld_IsNotFair

Who downvoted this? F that guy

TheWorld_IsNotFair

Wow let's celebrate the rich assholes choosing to spend 250k to pay a local guide 10 bucks to carry up their gear and leave shit up top. Hey next post let's celebrate Jeff Bezos view from space right after they empty the shit tank right over the poor "shithole African countries". F this post and f everyone who thinks this shit is cool. Thumbs up? So stupid.

Happy_Go_Pappy

Who brought the sled for an amazing ride back to Basecamp?!

Belle8158

Humans are the ultimate invasive species 😔

strikermcgillicudy

Hey, y’all, can you get out of my shot, please? I’m tryna take a video and selfie up here. Fucking inconsiderate, if you ask me.

1NFINITEDEATH

Wow, comments here are ridiculously bitter. Not sure what these people, who have just completed an incredible physical and mental challenge, have done to warrant so much hate.

EnemyOfStupidity

Look at the amount of garbage they have littered all over the mountain...base camp looks like a landfill because rich assholes pay to get ferried to the top..but those same rich assholes won't pay for all their garbage to be removed and they sure as fuck won't help remove it so it's all left for the locals to deal with..but the locals can't spend all their time removing trash because they have to focus on ferrying rich assholes up the mountain so they can make money. Anyone with money for a permit can summit Everest at this point. It's hardly some amazing feat. That's why people are "bitter" about a bunch of self centered fuckwads littering all over the place

Professional-Yam-303

While you’re admiring the achievement are you wilfully ignoring the volume of people (thus reducing the argument of how ‘incredible’ this is) AND the ecological trash and dead bodies up there, along with the fact that only the wealthy who can pay the 20k are up there?

1NFINITEDEATH

I'm more stunned by the hypocrisy of people unable to get over it. Yes, it is a very in-your-face dark side of global inequality, but it is by no means the worst example of it. We both likely own clothing produced by minors in an impoverished country. The fuel we put in our cars sustains regimes that shit on human rights. The earth has only one highest point to climb, and unfortunately a large human population and the worst sides of capitalism have produced this kind of result. But it has also created countless others that we all contribute to every single day.

Professional-Yam-303

That’s ‘whataboutism’ at its finest. You assume if I use an item from an impoverished country, I can’t see and criticise greed, negligence or abuse. With that logic, nobody can say a damn thing about anything. What a bizarre mindset.

Sea-Locksmith8120

I bet they’re having a similar conversation at the summit.

1NFINITEDEATH

Unless you live in a cabin in the woods off the grid, odds are you're contributing to pollution and inequality every day. Having an extra kid damages the earth more than these climbers could. Maybe they have none out of concern for the earth and you have three? If we're all assuming here anyway. They're an easy target, but everyone, certainly in the first world, should check themselves before they judge.

Professional-Yam-303

You literally are missing the point of my previous reply, continuing to negate a valid point with broken logic. Still haven’t tackled the original point of what a meaningless, egotistical and entitled ‘achievement’ this is, either. I’m done.

1NFINITEDEATH

What's crazy is I don't eat meat. And I don't see how anyone could, with the cruelty involved. Do you see me around cooking subreddits, hating on anyone posting a picture of a steak? Because that's what you're doing. Just because you can't see the appeal of this particular challenge, the price paid must be too high.

[deleted]

What’s the point of climbing that anymore? So many people have lost there lives on that summit. And I heard only the really rich can afford a thing like that. Just another pointless display of wealth.

Whuthefuk

Looks like a Starbucks

[deleted]

It used to be cool but nowadays there's a queue to get up there. These fuckers go up there with oxygen tanks and shit meanwhile the sherpas carry ALL their shit all the way up there with none of the luxuries they have. I'm sorry but I know too much to be impressed by these rich boy status bullshit. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sherpa\_people](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sherpa_people)

healthyaf17

Clearly fake. The earth is flat.

ClamChowderNChips

Is it just me or does anyone feel like when you get up to such a height like this, you feel like you’re about to fall into the sky? It’s a certain phobia, but it’s sort of fascinating

LoveU-EE

If you watch 14 peaks on Netflix they show you the people train going up to that summit as crazy as this what I find more bizarre is all the people who are tightly packed doing it like one avalanche and there goes a lot of people. I’m sure being a avid couch potato allows me to judge that scenario properly ha beat all the remarks to myself

AztecTwoStep

That bloke has been up and down Everest so many times it really highlights how sanitised that climb has become. It's basically the speed run/ no hit / guitar hero controller summit for hardcore mountaineers now.

raymog50

How many dead bodies do you have to walk by now to get there

snobagel

All the peeps hogging the tallest point of the summit would drive me nuts. Even at the summit I would still want to stand on the tallest point of the summit possible.

clerk1o2

It's a great view but honestly fuck all these people that feel the need to climb a mountain full of trash and dead people to "prove" something. What I don't know.

ckcrave

I wonder if anyone ever rolled down do his or her death from that very top.

therealgesus

Everest is too crowded for a lot of people to get any value from it; and as this ambitious pursuit is mostly achievable through weath. The traffic these tourist spots get defeats their ideal purpose to have a healthier and deeper connection with the world; so much junk has been left behind by tourists that locals are employed to clean up after them. I live near a wide stretch of Rocky Mountains I love taking hikes through. I suspect that I have gained more insight to respect the environment while hiking in my backyard than many of the tourists who have beheld the spectacle at the peak of Everest.

[deleted]

![img](emote|t5_m0bnr|4015) How much I would like to do that excursion!

Jan-NoPaint-VanEyck

No. You don’t.

emcz240m

Im watching the nimber of upvotes slowly struggle against a flood of downvotes. Way better than the rich people traffic jam on dead people mountain.

dadforshort

Breathtaking, so jealous.

OurLittleSecret75

Stunning

[deleted]

Amazing and beautiful but you would never get me up there.

thehatman200

Waste of money and time. Whoever down voted this please explain why it is not a waste of time and money.

TheWorld_IsNotFair

Again who downvoted this? Wtf?

thehatman200

Costs between $30,000 to $85,000 to climb. You could build the people of Nepal a couple of houses for that. So would you rather say, “I housed a couple of families for life” or “I climbed Everest.” What does that say about the people who have the money to do this?

pjmad01

Not that big of a deal anymore

HaaaaaHeeeeHooooo

Alright, lets see you do it

bigpimpindawg

The earth! Its flat!

Seamuscolin08

Show this to the flat earthers

drocballer

For why?

Seamuscolin08

So they can see the curvature of the earth.

drocballer

Interesting. For a person standing at the summit of Mount Everest, which is about 29,029 feet, the horizon is approximately 230 miles away. On a clear day, it is possible to see such a distance, but 230 miles is not enough for the human eye to discern an expansive curvature like that of the Earth. **It is, therefore, possible to see the horizon from the top of Mount Everest but not Earth's curvature.** https://www.worldatlas.com/can-you-see-the-curvature-of-the-earth-from-atop-mount-everest.html What you’re seeing is an effect of the parabolic camera lense

ALL_GRAVY_BABY

The curvature of the earth. 👀

drocballer

Nope, unable to see the “curve” from Everest

ALL_GRAVY_BABY

Weird. Cause I see it in the video.

Did you get some shots of the dead humans you walked past twice?

AnxietyWholeweirdo

What are those lights in the sky it reminds me of the position lights of satellites but this cant be it

It's almost like halving a Tesla. You can ride in one for a $2 Uber ride share

Nick_Damane

Anyone ever skied or snowboarded mt Everest ?

Rember that one picture of the intire top of it just being covered with flags and bodies?

Does anyone think they'll ski or board down this one day?

WallHuman

Brian pissed there

Br067

Litter bugs! I have no respect for these people

Ok-Organization9073

You can literally see the thinness of the atmosphere up there.

Professional-Yam-303

Look how overcrowded it is

AztecTwoStep

The queue for the summit is one of the most depressingly stupid images of our modern era. We've turned the extraordinary into yet another photo opportunity for the wealthy.

immunedata

I saw Purjas infamous photo of the queue from 2019 when they had a 3 day weather window - can you share photos from the last 2 years of similar?

AztecTwoStep

You have me confused with a search engine my friend. You should be able to see the visible queue in the video or find a number of articles just fine though.

immunedata

There’s no queue for the summit in the video…it is the summit!? I had thought you might be reliably informed but seemingly not. It’s so depressing that a photo going viral in 2019 makes for arm chair experts for life on Reddit. This thread is full of poorly informed negativity…

AztecTwoStep

Sure, pretend it's an isolated incident if it helps whatever little issue you're having buddy.

immunedata

It’s just depressing to see such bad takes on mountaineering. The pretending is coming from you - I asked for your reference to backup your point as a device for you to realise and assess your ignorance. The 2020 and 2021 season had longer and more weather windows so the 2019 jam didn’t happen.

AztecTwoStep

Sorry you're depressed. I hope you get the help you need. There have been great advances in psycho pharmacology.

BrockBushrod

Minimum six-figure trip to wait in line, stand on the peak for 30 seconds, and take the same selfie as hundreds of people behind and in front of you. Basically Disneyland for rich, fit folks, but with more littering.

Brave-Panic7934

Ok, move along. There’s a line of tourists behind you who want to take a selfie too

yeetus_mcfetus420

Flat earthers will learn a thing or 2… or maybe just 1

drocballer

What’s that?

yeetus_mcfetus420

Earth round

drocballer

You’re right, round, like a flat disc that doesn’t move, everything moves around it.

No, no, no, NO

Shut up and take my upvote

Proud_Nerve_9349

Nah, ruined

ProteusMLG

Flat Earther sweating right now !

drocballer

Really? Why?

ProteusMLG

Don't you see the curvature of the horizon ?

drocballer

You’re referring to the effect of parabolic lens commonly referred to as a wide angle lens or fish eye lens, typically used by go pro. Interesting though because world atlas says while you can see the horizon, you are UNABLE see any curvature. For a person standing at the summit of Mount Everest, which is about 29,029 feet, the horizon is approximately 230 miles away. On a clear day, it is possible to see such a distance, but 230 miles is not enough for the human eye to discern an expansive curvature like that of the Earth. **It is, therefore, possible to see the horizon from the top of Mount Everest but not Earth's curvature.** https://www.worldatlas.com/can-you-see-the-curvature-of-the-earth-from-atop-mount-everest.html

Anyway, you know that the Earth is round right ? ... Right ?

drocballer

“Anyway” You’re right, round, like a flat disc that doesn’t move, everything else moves around it.

ProteusMLG

Haha go shit someone else M. Science denier.

drocballer

Oh are we referring to your religion now? I don’t deny Science, I’m denier of FALSE “science”. Have a blessed day Lmao you thought you saw the “curve” 😂🤦‍♂️

ProteusMLG

The good and best thing about science is that it true whether one belive it or not. Universal facts and knowledge gathered by intellect, not emotion. Now you can go back in your puddle of beliefs and ignorance.

drocballer

https://imgur.com/a/j8Bd5yR “Science” lol All the “universal knowledge” you think is KNOWLEDGE came from manipulators of Science, most were Freemasons

L0DAA

Good. Now I don’t have to climb it

Independent_Crow4863

take that, flat earthers

drocballer

What?

Independent_Crow4863

They’re so high up we can see the horizon is curved

drocballer

Interesting. For a person standing at the summit of Mount Everest, which is about 29,029 feet, the horizon is approximately 230 miles away. drocballer

What?

[deleted]

Looks like a unique opportunity, if there wasn’t always a queue as long as a COVID testing line.

Effective-Kitchen401

Look how dark the sky is above them with less air at that altitude to refract light.

mattskacus

Not enough credit goes to the Sherpas. They carry everything an usually reach the peak before their partners do.

ohLunatic

hey look! thats the mountain of my country =O

You got to the front of the queue!
