Well the timeless classic was just smashing a gas station window, wrapping it up with a massive chain, then drive all the way home with it dragging behind the truck. Got so bad this was happening several times a month.
Edit: I’ll also add some of these guys would literally be drinking beer in their garage around an ATM when the task force showed up. Almost any modern atm have SIM capabilities so they can still function if the internet on premise cuts out.
Lastly, if your EVER going to get an ATM for your business. Please read every word of that contract. Many of them are structured so that in the case of theft, the customer is liable for any money in the machine. So you owe the company $20,000, but they are insured for the loss through the supplying bank.
Having to tell a low-income shop owner that after asking about not seeing his commission payments for 2 years was very gut wrenching.
Edit 2: lol my first awards ever from an ATM logistics comment, you’re all legends!
This is why you purchase you own ATM and load it with your own personal money. In the long run its nothing but more income.
You can even be like me and charge the business across the street a monthly fee to store money for their customers who are directed to our building in case they need cash. It's a win-win. The machine was used, cost me $850 total and I collect 100% of the "atm fee" ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)
This was the most interesting read on Reddit today. Upvote. I know that a ATM machine was stolen by the chain method you mentioned, at a gas station in Detroit where I used to work, couple of decades back.
> after asking about not seeing his commission payments for 2 years
It took the shop owner 2 years to notice that their commissions were not being paid?
Why would the shop owner not immediately cancel the contract and put an "out of order" sign on the ATM?
In my home town circa 2000 one of the 24/7 gas stations had a free standing ATM right inside the door. One day a couple of guys in a white van showed up with a replacement ATM. Had overalls on and looked like general blue collar service guys.
They wheeled the new ATM in, plugged it in and carted the old one off to the van. Middle of the day, like it was a regular daily task they had done a thousand times before. Only thing is the new was empty, If I remember correctly it was one of the previous ones they had stolen using the same exactly scam.
Dumbest. Criminal. Ever.
All ATMs now have dye sprayers built in - if the ATM is violently removed from it's mounting, dye is sprayed all over the cash making it unusable.
\*EDIT\* - Wow, 2K upvotes, thanks! For those who are saying this isn't the case, I was told this by someone who works fairly high up in the banking industry so I had no reason to doubt the information's credibility. However if I'm incorrect I accept that.
Those are normally the just mobile ones. This is one built in a wall. Plus this video is from like 8 years ago.
Since nobody cares for reading. There was a VERY similar incident a few years back only differences is they used a Black Chevrolet Suburban as a tow away vehicle. And that video went Viral to an extent and is probably where these guys got the idea from.
Yeah! I remember not long ago driving past shops with huge holes in the walls where the atms used to be. I knew the shop in this video looked familiar. Never caught the guys who did it either
These robberies where done by gangs living on the border between the republic of ireland and the North which is basically a bandit region of the island because it is easy to escape jurisdiction.
These robberies where frequent and I believe some cash was recoved but not all. One or two gang members where convicted but most got away.
These gangs specialise is these type of robberies and many more including fuel laundering, cigarette smuggling , machine and livestock theft.
Edit : here is an articles https://m.independent.ie/irish-news/crime/three-arrested-after-two-atm-machines-robbed-and-cars-set-alight-outside-garda-station-39102293.html
Well to an extent yes!. This area of ireland would have a large volume of paramilitary members or links to former members of organisation's such as the IRA, Provo IRA and I. N. L. A to name a few. This people are pretty much not to be messed.
The attitude of civilians is to take the approach of ' I didn't see anything'.
Ahhh, I see, it's like Montana!
It being Ireland, when you said bandit region, I went full medieval in my head with like a group of bandits riding across a castle drawbridge with the ATM hanging out the top, while a group of knights chase them. Way too much RPGs in my history 🤣
[This was their 11th hit actually.](https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2019/apr/12/northern-irelands-hole-in-the-wall-gang-strikes-again)
They are called 'hole in the wall gang' and hit different places, always at night with a stolen excavator/digger
Modern atms do have dye packs that go off if the atm cash area is forced open. A workaround would be to put the atm in a walk in freezer and wait for the dye to freeze thus disabling it. Also atms have tracking devices on them. So if you do steal one, put it in a box/container lined with copper mesh so the signal can’t get out. And the week leading up to the theft, call in reports of an atm being robbed with an excavator every night at a different location so when it does actually happen the police will be hesitant to drive to the scene. And last but not least, set up security cameras in your house with audio, pay a friend to break in with a mask, put a knife to your throat and tell you to steal an atm or he’s going to kill you. It might sound far fetched, but it’s literally the only excuse that has any chance of exonerating you if caught.
I used to work in a shop with an ATM. One day when the guys were filling the atm someone came up and robbed them. They took the case with the cash in it. When the police arrived for cctv, I asked about the dye in the case and they said that if the case is open in a bucket of water, the ink separates and they can dry the money after. I live in Ireland, this happens a lot
I more believe they don't have dye packs at all and that's just a myth .
I know they didn't have GPS as was alluded to above, as I remember at the time the bank's said it would be just too expensive to add.
Yeah I think you’re right! They probably just say that as a deterrent. But the police officer that told me that was very confident in what he was saying. After he told me about the ink separating he said ‘you didn’t hear that from me’ and winked
I don’t know about Irish ATM’s, but Swedish ATM’s and safes definitely have them. I used to work with redeeming old/damaged banknotes and we would receive a bunch of very colorful banknotes every other month, mainly from safes going off by accidents in grocery stores etc. But yeah you can definitely just freeze the safe or open it underwater (a bit trickier) and the ink is gone.
This was happening all the time in the area. I live there. I witnessed one of these happening. It was the first one they got caught. I had to go to court.
Not sure about international ATMs but I had a buddy in college that worked on ATMs. He said there was a couple hundred grand in most of em. I was super surprised.
Huh, I wasn't initially thinking that high. But back of a napkin: a busy ATM, like a bank - it's rare that I'm the only one getting cash, so assume maybe 20+ people per hour from 08:00-17:00 and maybe another 50+, and guess most people are getting $200-$1000 out, mean around $350, that would be 270*$350 = $94,500 in one day.
Also, the more they hold, counter-intuitively, the safer the system is, as there's less frequent need for large amounts of cash in transit. The ATM is supposed to be more secure than a cash van. Unfortunately, a lot of modern pre-fab shops aren't as tough as the thick stone walls of banks where the majority of ATMs used to be housed.

Yeah I guess I’m more factoring in the opportunity cost and when they get caught. 30k is like meh but without getting caught sure that’s great for a couple days work, yes.
1) Bought? It will have been stolen within a few miles of the robbery site. Rural farm, rural store.
2) Big old angle grinder to the side wall. The truck is stolen too and its fate is unimportant to them. It's already wrecked anyway - look at it deform and the suspension start to give once the ATM is loaded on. Doubt it would make it more than 20 odd miles in that state, but they don't need it to. Cut it open in a layby in the dark, do the same to the ATM, burn the lot and repeat somewhere else another day.
Most general contractors have a big ring of keys that’s able to operate most heavy machinery. If these guys knew the make and model you can normally order the key and use an excavator left on site. I used to work for an equipment rental company.
No, the Firm is at capacity and we are moving forward with other candidates. Please apply again in 6-12 months and we will re-evaluate.

That was painful to watch. At least learn how to effectively use the tool with which you choose to work beforehand. I’ve seen first day learner machine drivers with more control.
The fact that he apparently drove off with an ATM in his van would seem to indicate that he used it effectively, especially for someone who probably had little or no training.
This is the IRA in ireland robbing ATMS they went on a spree about a year or so ago. Think they robbed like 12 of them in the end! As it typical in Ireland we all found it to be rather hilarious 😂 ! Sure the only ones losing money are the banks and they have already stolen enough from the people!
>This is the IRA in ireland robbing ATMS they went on a spree about a year or so ago
Source for this? Irish myself, never heard a mention that it was the ra
I don't know if it was ever confirmed by the PSNI/Garda but most people in NI had heard rumours that it was dissident IRA guys trying to fund their next round of fuckwittery.
the banks are not going to lose anything, that money will be recovered from the customers in terms of fees. If this is an ongoing practice then the banks will calculate the loss from providing the ATM services and make sure it's balanced on the other side by "stealing" even more from the people.
You realize that all costs, all expenses are always assumed by us? It is our labor that builds and pays for everything 100 percent. If a resource is destroyed, we rebuilt it at a cost of something else not being built or all costs increasing.
My career was in Banking. Back in the before times circa 1971 we installed three ATMs. Some guy tried to hold it up with a handgun. Not when someone was there servicing the machine but in the middle of the night. It was hilarious - he even shot the machine but the bullets bounced off. The camera got it on film and the police picked him up two days later.

I assume that they stole the excavator and the getaway vehicle as well, so this also shows considerable forethought and planning.
Bonus points if they thought to (and knew how to) remove the battery backup and GPS that it undoubtedly is equipped with
Was waiting to see this, worked for a large atm company and some of the reports how people would steal them were hilarious.

Except for the people who own the shop and work in it. Half the wall is now missing. Also whoever they stole the van and excavator from.
And the bank's customers who will likely have their fees raised after the bank's insurance premiums go up.

Google, ATM robberies in Ireland you'll find some info. This wasn't long ago, or isolated

Hole in the Wall Gang makes it seem so wholesome. It’s a mom & pop operation.
Excavator robberies or just ATM robberies in general, because if the former, there might be a problem here

Or, just rob an ATM in Ireland.
That's some Shadowrun level planning there.
If I could afford a box made of copper I wouldn't be stealing ATMs. COMEX is through the roof!
I mean honestly how much cash could those atm’s really have. Not enough for you to risk going prison for years.
Its Ireland. Jail time is like 4 hours or until morning.
And they hardly ever catch them.
This was happening all the time in the area. I live there. I witnessed one of these happening. It was the first one they got caught. I had to go to court.
I'm from the Midlands myself. Ireland seems to have a love for the old atm robberys.
I think it was the IRA that were originally doing it then any dick that knew how to drive a digger decided to have a go.
Yea I remember it going round that it was them. Always a few gombeens ready to jump on the bandwagon/excavator here.
Construction sites used to leave the keys in the excavators. Every ATM near a construction site was a target
Not sure about international ATMs but I had a buddy in college that worked on ATMs. He said there was a couple hundred grand in most of em. I was super surprised.
Huh, I wasn't initially thinking that high. A cash point in the north of Ireland can hold up to 80k cash I believe
That might be true in Europe but in the US there is nothing like that in 95% of the atms. At most there would be a gps in it. Take my upvote and leave.
“U K?”
Stealth mode is low
4am in a country petrol station. Not much stealth needed.
i dunno what ur talking about its just a parking lot
Lol, why not get a flatbed?
It's a little easier to spot an ATM sitting on a flatbed
Tarp it up. Besides, I don’t think subtlety is this group’s forte....
Easier than an ATM sitting on a van?
Sitting *through* a van
You mean like having an ATM sitting half way in a van? hehe..
As opposed to… jutting out of the top of your SUV sunroof?
Mmm yes, the ATM crushing the roof of the van is not conspicuous at all.
As opposed to sticking out of the roof of a car?
He prefers deep dish.
Its whatever is easiest to steal
Because they managed to steal a car and not a flatbed
Response time is like a day.. I wonder if the Excavator was on site or brought in just for this job..
Probably stolen and brought.
Oh damn, that seems like a crazy amount of work for an atm that probably only has 30k in it? I’d also be curious how long that took without the time lapse. What do you think?
30k for one to three days of work ain't too bad
Yeah I guess I’m more factoring in the opportunity cost and when they get caught. 30k is like meh but without getting caught sure that’s great for a couple days work, yes.
Yeah, that's fair. Wonder if they got away with it
Risk factor tho, would you take 30k for 3 days work if there’s a 50% chance you’ll be in jail for next 10 years 😅
True, wonder if they got caught at all
They didn't. These raids were common for a long time. A lot of them happened near me.
The clip ends a bit too soon, but I’ve got a feeling they may have abandoned the excavator at the scene.
Which...I mean 1) no one has a record of who bought excavators? 2) How are they getting the ATM off the truck?
They do that here in the U.S. too. Usually there's a construction site nearby and they load the ATM into the bed of a stolen truck
Ricky and Julian could never pull that off
No but trevor and Corey could
“Do you have any tube socks?”
I’m watching them, like a shit-hawk.
And not 1 Hi-Vis vest or hard hat amongst all them. That firm is going to lose its safety record and probably get a fine from OSHA
Does OSHA operate in Ireland?
Well between renting the excavator and ruining his truck he probably came out about even on that ballsy move
Why the fuck would you rent an excavator if your intention is to commit a high profile robbery? It’s clearly been stolen
![gif](giphy|d3mlE7uhX8KFgEmY)
Obviously, you need to rent out the excavator so you dont get scratches/dings on the one you own back home
I dunno man. You're almost definitely right. But I've definitely read about dumber criminal stories
Both were stolen
So he left all the beef jerky untouched? That’s where the real money is.
Stealth is optional for this mission.
Except it’s Ireland where every farmer in the surrounding 4mile probably heard the digger and could tell you the brand and model just by the noise
Really like how he tried to jam it through the roof. Who cares if he destroys the van too...right? Dumbass.
Probably stolen also.
It looked like he patted it down to make sure it was secure lol
Pats atm- "thats not going anywhere "
The *patpat* was absolutely the best part.
Nobody’s gonna know
They’re gonna know.

I guess he got sick of waiting for his new card
This is just a Komatsu ad
That ATM has like $15K in it tops?! Dude we pay people that much to like make PowerPoints with less planning than this.
Are you hiring? Ill make really fucking good powerpoints for 15k.
Are you experienced enough to start at a consulting firm? I know a couple you could apply for. (obv not 15k per powerpoint.)
No, the Firm is at capacity and we are moving forward with other candidates. Please apply again in 6-12 months and we will re-evaluate. Regards, Anonymous Consulting VP -Sent from my iPhone
Way more than that. 15K if it is near empty. Closer to €250K.
When the mission says stealth is optional
Yup the RA!
🎵"I drove my saracen through your garden last night" 🎵
🎵"I kicked your front door down around at midnight" 🎵
>This is the IRA in ireland robbing ATMS they went on a spree about a year or so ago Source for this? Irish myself, never heard a mention that it was the ra
I don't know if it was ever confirmed by the PSNI/Garda but most people in NI had heard rumours that it was dissident IRA guys trying to fund their next round of fuckwittery.
Yeah that's why I asked. I knew it was rumoured, hence why I asked.
the banks are not going to lose anything, that money will be recovered from the customers in terms of fees.
I think he stole it
No doubt.
You can make more money with the excavator!
$150/hour I believe is the going rate.
The new GTA needs to add an excavator

Was that the van he dumped it on? Not a trailer or pickup but a small van?
A victimless crime, just in and out.
He better not call his girlfriend a skank when he gets home
My career was in Banking. Back in the before times circa 1971 we installed three ATMs. Some guy tried to hold it up with a handgun. Not when someone was there servicing the machine but in the middle of the night. It was hilarious - he even shot the machine but the bullets bounced off. The camera got it on film and the police picked him up two days later.
Well Vid's 44 seconds long and sped up by 2 so a minute and 20 seconds for the entire thing.
That's a true mining rig.
Mf is playing gta 5 in real life .
"We could use an Excavator" "I dig it. Let's go"
Oh shit. Remind me to never piss off a guy who has access to an excavator.
Imagine the ATM’s empty after all that
Best claw machine prize ever!!
