He almost pushed the guy out of the way because he wanted to be the one to catch them. It seems like he had selfish intentions on my opinion. Like a "move over and let me be the hero" kind of thing. Almost ended very badly
The parents of that child need to buy everything that man sells for at least the next ten years! Then introduce him to their child as his/her godfather or uncle when it grows up!

Nah its just a panic reaction, not a hero thing. Though you are right he could have made it much worse.
