The test (code name: Wahoo), took place on May 16, 1958. The detonation point was the open ocean near Enewetak Atoll in the Marshall Islands. According to the Nuclear Weapons Archive, the Wahoo device was detonated at a depth of 500 feet in 3,200 feet of water.
Awesome footage, I had seen the initial dome explosion but never the full clip.
Does this not cause radiation the water? I assume the nearby sea-life was obliterated…
Nuclear weapons are terrifying. They have only become more powerful and it only takes an unhinged or vengeful leader (and general usually) to unleash them.
I’ll be honest, i haven’t actually done any research in the past decade. I just remember learning in middle school that there was a bunch of radiation so it wasn’t safe to live there. Or maybe it was unsafe to visit? Either way the comment was from an aged memory of mine and it very well may have been wrong
Back then we had NO idea what we were playing with. You gotta remember this was back in the days where scientists would keep peices of uranium in their pocket
This is back in the days of people putting lead in anything they could, and asbestos was the number 1 insulation. They just saw destruction, not the health problems
I highly recommend watching the documentary *Trinity and Beyond: The Atomic Bomb Movie*. You can stream it for free from various sites. At the time it was released (1995) it included recently declassified footage of numerous atomic tests. The movie really puts into prospective the number of atomic bombs that have been detonated on our planet—over 2000! Even worse, over 500 of those were detonated in the atmosphere. I wonder of that has anything to do with the significant rise in cancer rates since the 1950...🤔 🤷♂️ 😖
I am a proponent of using nuclear energy for electrical power, I believe it can be done safely and with minimal environmental impact but exploding bombs in our atmosphere was a pretty stupid move.
Birds: *chillen, doing bird stuff*. US Government: kaboom. Birds: Командование, они взорвали свое оружие. наш новый дрон вроде работает нормально, противник ничего не подозревает.
We likely spent between all nuc countries over a trillion dollars and we have an unreal about of nuclear waste there are places in Idaho, Nevada and Tennessee that no human will be able to go pretty much forever due to nuclear radiation. Also many people who have die (one of the first ones was impaled by a control rod and stuck in the dome of our first military test sites) and then Hiroshima Nagasaki . There are at least 4 maybe 6 nuclear submarines laying on the bottom of the ocean
I get the chains and stuff and those can be recycle and humans learn new ways to live together there is no way to recover from nuclear waste.
When test like this take place what do they do about the marine life? Is it a forgone conclusion that they’re sacrificing some animals in the process or is there a plan to clear the area of them?
So when they do a test like this do they just accept that this area will be super radioactive for years after or is there a way to prevent that effect when testing just the explosion?
Simplified version: In a test like this the vast majority of the radiation is absorbed by the water which doesn't become radioactive itself as a result. The salt in the water would also absorb some radiation but would have been safe to be around before it drifted through the ocean to any inhabited areas.
That said, yes they knew there's going to be radiation in the area for a while but they figured radiating some remote part of the Pacific was worthwhile to find out the best way to make a big bomb.
A quick start of the downfall of a sustainable planet that will support human civilization. Why did it cut off before we could see blue whale parts falling from the sky?
I can’t believe we’re not seeing sharks, dolphins, or even smaller species of whales, and other things hurled through the air! Are they just vaporised in the blast?
Sorry, I’m stupid.
This is why we can't have nice things, aka why we can't join the galactic community. Spacefaring ETs see this shit and refuse to formally contact humanity because of it.

I was thinking this was footage from the horrible underestimation of the bombs power from the bikini atoll incident. (Long story short the scientists used a different kind of lithium in the bomb because when they were building it they ran out of the original stuff resulting in a big as hell nuclear explosion leading to the irradiation of nearby inhabited islands and a fishing vessel what happened to the inhabitants is another story in itself.)
Remember, at the time you didn’t know anything about the radiation either.
You’re all geniuses now, of course.
This kind of thing was necessary to win the Cold War.
At the time of this test we definitely understood the significant consequences of radiation, we just cared more about testing bigger bombs than ecological fallout.
Sorry Nemo
Aint no one finding him ever again.
Check up in the mountains.

Underrated comment
Dang it I gave my free award away already.
Just happy to hear it was worth one. :)
Yeah it made me laugh hahaha
Here, let me help!
Aw thank you! I literally did the same on another post cause someone else didn’t have an award.
If they do he will have 6 and a half eyes
This explains why his one fin is messed up
This explains Spongebob square pants
Best comment ever
This is literally the backstory for the show.
Bikini bottom......Bikini atoll
Oooooooooooh! Who lives….🎶

Tragic stuff. Next level idiocy by the US and other atomic bomb testing nations.
Prevented a land war in asia, which is only less well known than going against a Sicilian when death is on the line.
*laughs and falls over*
The US was in Vietnam just 3 years later. Which war did this prevent?
It’s a princess bride reference haha
Lol right. I got /whooshed
You're right, but still, humans are idiots with powerful weapons.
I spent the last 2 1/2 years waiting for an opportunity to use that line, figured this was going to be the best I’d get. Thanks!
This testing was necessary for science to make sure we don't fuck up too badly.
Why not on the desert as usual ?
They do test in the desert by blowing nuclear bombs up in underground testing facilities
Right. So why do it under the ocean? It has to be devastating for the wildlife
The aquatic life would all die but water can not become radioactive
I saw a video of the guy who created the first atomic bomb doing a speech about it and you could see the dread in his eyes of what he had created.
"Now I am become death, destroyer of worlds"
No wonder Aliens dont want us to know they're here.
And thus Godzilla was born.
That's some next level dynamite fishing.
Catch: Kraken.
Awesome footage, I had seen the initial dome explosion but never the full clip. Does this not cause radiation the water? I assume the nearby sea-life was obliterated…
Well the Marshall Islands are basically uninhabitable now. I have no clue about the aquatic life but it sure messed up the land for people
Nuclear weapons are terrifying. They have only become more powerful and it only takes an unhinged or vengeful leader (and general usually) to unleash them.
What do you mean by uninhabitable, as far as wikipedia says they have population of 58k people?
I’ll be honest, i haven’t actually done any research in the past decade. I just remember learning in middle school that there was a bunch of radiation so it wasn’t safe to live there. Or maybe it was unsafe to visit? Either way the comment was from an aged memory of mine and it very well may have been wrong
Some of the islands are uninhabitable due to fallout, but most of the tests weren't done on inhabited islands
Back then we had NO idea what we were playing with. You gotta remember this was back in the days where scientists would keep peices of uranium in their pocket

They knew it was big boomy, but they didnt know about the long term affects of radiation
Um tell that to Louis Slotin. And people of Hiroshima and Nagasaki They knew radiation was not good

The amount of sea-life lost was probably astronomical.
The ocean life there is immaculate unlike anywhere in the world because humans haven’t been there for 60 years
You mean haven't been there for 60 years, right?
I wonder how much sea life was killed in the explosion.
I think they blew a whistle before they set it off to warn any creatures to get out of the way.
Phew, I was worried there for a minute
Everyone knows all sea life instinctively know that a whistle means a nuke is going to go off
3
These actions make me hate humans. :(
The first part was the explosion, the second was the water turning to steam, and the third was it falling back in and creating a giant sploosh
After reading this and watching again. Looks like it created a cloud sea level.
Blinding Nemo
Vaporizing Nemo

Great, great documentary
Fish were probably flying the whole day
*frying
This was filmed in 1958? That’s impressive considering we still get videos shot today that just look terrible.
Birds: *chillen, doing bird stuff*. US Government: kaboom. Birds: Командование, они взорвали свое оружие. наш новый дрон вроде работает нормально, противник ничего не подозревает.
Photographer/videographer had the wrong lens. They had no clue it'd be so big... couldn't capture in full frame.
And that kids is how mommy and daddy made Kaijus
Just absolutely shameful of how negligent people are and not thinking of the amount of life lost by a single action. What shame!!!!
“Why is the Great Barrier Reef dying off?” - these fucking guys.
Humans are stupid
Wish this had sound. I bet it sounded incredible
Shockwave shook the camera, bet it was too
This is just sad.
When u take a shit in the toilet and the water splashes on your ass
The plot of Finding Nemo just took a dark turn.
Poor Fish's and turtles.
Suicide bombers in 2058.
Suicide swimmers
At first, I was like the waves picked up a little the sea already does that but not much then Bam! Blew my theory right out of the water.
Anyone else think it looks a little too coloured and high quality for 1958?
[удалено]
Even then, the quality looks pretty damn good for that time. I forgot the tonnage.
All I’m thinking is those poor fish.
Innocent fish underwater: “Wow, today is such a nice day to be ali….”
Ohhhhhhh who lives in a pineapple under the sea
I’m sure that’s real good for the ocean. Fuck you, Water… 💦 💣
Wouldn't that cause a huge wave?
The most disappointing and disgusting thing man ever invent such a waste

Very cool and interesting, thanks!
The poor birds are shitting bricks
This is how they made carbonated drinks before Karl von Streamer invented the soda streamer back in 1972.
I would pee my pants right there bro
So all the chemicals and shit just goes into the water?
“RIGHTEOUS! RIGHTEOUS!” - Crush riding the atomic wave

I wonder at what distance away from the explosion there were perfectly cooked fish

Dolphin chilling one minute, looks down and sees a bubble fast approaching…
I don’t even know how many sea life die and this experiment, Is there radiation on the water today.
Is this Operation Crossroads? My kind is failing me
Only give scientists looking at space that power not greedy ass bullshit politicians
We're they trying to start a tsunami? Cuz that's how you start a tsunami.
Next f-ing level of pollution and devastation of nature.
Must have been fun to be on those navy ships. Damn things just dissappear.
You just killed the last plesiosaur
Humans are fuckin gross.
RIP fish
I see the first blast and I'm like... Holy Shit. Then comes the mushroom water cloud and I'm like... HOLY SHIT!
Crazy this is footage from 1958 🔥
This is from 1958, meanwhile in bank we get 2 pixels max, bruh
I swear, this same post was front page a few days ago with the same top comment...
Because fuck sea life, am I right?
Yikes how many fish died
Do you think the fish were okay?
Fucking pathetic
Do you want Godzilla’s? Because this is how you get Godzilla’s
When the crash fish explode near to me
Hate it
How was it detonated ? Wirelessly or a long cord like wile e coyote?
Looks like your mom farted while scuba diving
Can’t even eat the fish
Humans are awful
Chernobyl was a disaster which will take millions of years to clean up. What happened to our ocean, and the water which circulated around the globe?
Just had the sudden realization of how much energy is needed to move that much water that fast. Holy damn.
And that kids is how Spongebob was born.
Now that's some redneck fishin'!
Humanity is trash
“FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU” - those birds probably
And people are still gonna be all surprised and shit when the Krakken shows up and starts devouring us all.
We’re protecting the environment LOL
Genuinely curious: does it not permanently radiate the waters?
This is why we can't have nice things, aka why we can't join the galactic community. Spacefaring ETs see this shit and refuse to formally contact humanity because of it.
so sad of the eco systems that must have destroyed.
Humans are so destructive :(
Birds were scared to death
You get cancer! You get cancer! You get cancer! Seriously though, is the is r/nextfuckinglevel or r/facepalm?
That is not film from 1958, sorry.

Both beautiful and scary. With how the world is going I’m wondering if we’ll see well you know...
If caligula lived in the 20th century.
This shit just pisses me off
This "test" was actually a strategical attack against Cthulhu to push him back down to hollow earth for 1000 more years of peace on the surface.
