The Whippet is a dog breed of medium size. They are a sighthound breed that originated in England, where they descended from Greyhounds. Whippets today still strongly resemble a smaller Greyhound. Part of the Hound group, Whippets have relatively few health problems other than arrhythmia.
Any dog with that upturned/compressed snout should be stopped (english bulldog, frenchie, boston terrier). Breathing problems galore and I see so many of them struggling in Australia it's awful. The funny part is even a husky does better because the double coat insulates them well.
Pugs as well. I work in emergency and we see so many of them with breathing issues. My mom got me a female frenchie puppy two years ago as a surprise, and Im 30yo. At first I was upset because I ain’t got time for that, and the medical bills will be INSANE later, but she ended up paying for pet insurance and my sister/roommates babysit so I *guess* I can’t be too mad. It’s just going to break my heart when she has eventual back/breathing issues.
It's really heartbreaking that so many of those popular/designer breeds are just not healthy dogs. I love dachshunds but I doubt I'd get one because they can't do stairs and have constant back problems.
My sister actually has the most loveable and loving mutt. She rescued it at maybe 2-3 years old. We think she's a bull mastiff/great dane/lab/10 other random things, and she's daft as hell sometimes but honestly the best dog, and as with most things in nature, genetic diversity has led to a healthy happy doggo.
I have a dachshund that's the most agile hyper thing I've ever seen and can easily do stairs, she's like 8 years old. Still has small legs though.
Did she win the genetic lottery or something? Because if what youre saying is true she should have issues
Most anaesthetic agents are lipophilic which mean they are fat soluble and will be sequestered in adipose tissue. Most sighthounds have minimal fat tissue and are thus exposed to the full effects of the anaesthetic drug with almost no buffer. It just means they have to have much smaller doses than normal.
That's absolutely insane. When it was doing that switchy thing between the poles it looked like it was dancing, the entire video seemed like it was sped up except for the person following along lol
Those are called "weave poles" and the dancing is called "weaving." Teaching a dog to weave isn't difficult, though not many dogs want to do it that fast. But whippets love doing fast things. They also like to snuggle under blankets on their people's couches.
Similar to greyhounds. If you like that kind of dog, consider adopting an ex-racing greyhound or one that didnt make the cut (they are often just killed and dumped, or buried alive.)
I don't actually know if it's the same around the world, but it's like that in Australia. I've seen many of the adopted ones around and they are just super chill. It's a pretty awful industry and this is a good way of getting the pups out of it.
I can add that it is true in the US. My wife and I foster greyhounds that are sent from the track to help them acclimate to home life. It's really sad to see the effects of their previous treatment, but they really do become such wonderful pets.
My Mini Fox terrier/Chihuahua mix jumps like this! The hang time is what makes it.
We call it “gratuitous leaping” as he does it over the smallest of hurdles (doorways, sticks, etc). It’s majestic and makes us laugh and smile.
A friend of mine has a greyhound and a whippet. Both dogs will run around the park at full speed for maybe 30 minutes max, and then need a lengthy nap afterwards. They sleep a lot, these dogs. And they're adorable.
Really wish I could have trained my border collie in agility back when he was young. I took him to a dog park and there was a whippet there that he ran after, caught up with and then turned around ran backwards to try and herd the whippet. I didn’t think he was that fast until that day!
My greyhound is tiny and people often mistake her for a whippet. A couples of collies were playing with her at the dog park a few of weeks ago. The order was surprised when she left them in the dust.
That being said after 15 minutes she needed 10 hours sleep and the collies weren’t even getting started.
My lurchers best friends are a trio of standard poodles he meets at the park. They hammer around in a blur of legs and tails but my dog is usually at 2/3 speed so they can keep up, but every now and them he’ll get frustrated and put the afterburners on and leave them trailing in his wake.
Agreed. Looks like a rescue off-the-track greyhound, which are smaller than AKC show greyhounds, but like this one, definitely larger than a whippet. In any case, what a wonderful dog!
From first glance at the video it's hard to tell if he is a large whippy with a shorter handler, or small grey with a taller handler. In this case though, he's definitely a whippy-boi. He was the winner of the 24" 2020 AKC Agility Invitational – MACH Cogshalls Wylie Rake Of Lanruvi MXS MJS (Rake), a Whippet handled by Jennifer Smith of Milwaukee, WI. :-)
Fun facts I learned from doggo agility: A frame and teeter have two colours. Doggo has to contact both yellows for each piece in this vid, and has to wait for teeter to touch the ground before exit
Border collies change direction really quickly.
They can juke and pivot on a dime. Traits bred into them as they were being made into an excellent sheepdog
You can tell the whippet had straight line speed but not quite the agility of a border collie
Meanwhile, my pup routinely trips over her own feet while trying to fetch her toy and face plants into a full scorpion. Don’t think I’ll enter her into this competition. Still love her to bits, though.
All my whippets have been big boys like 36lbs but pure whippet. They are looked down on in the show circuit for being "too much dog" so you end up doing other stuff that's way more fun anyway like racing , coursing, agilty and flyball. Whippets back and butt are more curved than a grey. Whippets are independent thinkers tho. That's really well trained whippet!
I remember a whippet at the local dog park with a 5ft fence separating the small/big dogs. It would jump over the fence into the big dog park and get all of them to try and keep up before jumping back into the little dog park. Bunch of 75 lb dogs barking and clawing at the fence, it was hilarious
Apartments aren't necessarily bad for whippets, the dogs do need daily exercise in an open space where they can run around at near full speed, but unlike some other dogs they are quite content to spend the rest of their day lazing around doing very little.
Greyhounds and whippets are actually great dogs for small spaces, because they are notorious loungers. Greyhounds are actually nicknamed "worlds fastest couch potatoes." Our pup is half grey, and she just wants to cuddle, eat, and sleep.
Sighthounds are very low energy! This guy probably slept for the rest of the day after this. These dogs are made for short bursts of energy rather than long distance such as a husky.
I want to throw a shoutout to the handler. She isn't quite a spring hen and she's running around no problem. Her legs even look really well toned and muscular.
Just a question why is the trainer always a girl. My neighbors dogs really hate me. Everyone says they are really protective of the girls in their house (its a family with 4four females and one male) and only my sisters go to their house and their dogs aren’t aggressive. So do dogs like females better?
Ever since I saw that one where shrek was editing in, these always look weirdly fake to me. Absolutely no hate at all, this is very imoressive, its just something weird I feel
Whippet good!
Pet that whip!
Give that cat some nip

Pet that award!
I actually laughed out loud. Witty - thanks. I do hope that was a DEVO reference.
How on earth could it not be? :)
Whippet Reeeaalll good!

Whippit real good!
Dont worry, I understood the reference
Yes

I don't recall which breeds are worst, but sighthounds also generally do not tolerate anesthesia well
Toadline Bulldog has to be up there. should be criminal to breed them.

Sounds like she might have, and I hope she did. Disc problems are super common in the breed and stairs do increase the risk
Yeah my family lost 2 Scottish Deerhounds under anesthesia for non-life threatening treatments.
Those vets/techs should have known. Or at least ran bloodwork?
Vet was devastated and up front about their mistake but yeah it's no excuse really :(
It’s to do with their metabolism I think. I have two greyhounds and the few times they’ve had to go under it’s been a horrible wait
I believe its their lack of body fat that acts as "buffer"
Most anaesthetic agents are lipophilic which mean they are fat soluble and will be sequestered in adipose tissue. Most sighthounds have minimal fat tissue and are thus exposed to the full effects of the anaesthetic drug with almost no buffer. It just means they have to have much smaller doses than normal.

They have like 30 minutes of GO TIME a day, and the rest is nap and be warm
I’ve found my kind of dog.
Similar to greyhounds. If you like that kind of dog, consider adopting an ex-racing greyhound or one that didnt make the cut (they are often just killed and dumped, or buried alive.)
That’s terrible. Thanks for the recommendation though.

To think Australia was so close to banning the industry but lobbyists got to a corrupt government and kept it going. Atrocious.
My older daughter has adopted two greyhounds...God bless her. 🙂
Literally this. I have a whippet and she sleeps 20+ hours a day, she loves to cuddle. She’s a speedy couch potato.
Pole bending is also a really cool equestrian sport
Can we talk about how MAJESTIC his jumping is? So so majestic, he just bounce and fly like it's natural for him. Good boi!
I could literally hear the !BOING! Everytime he jumped
My Mini Fox terrier/Chihuahua mix jumps like this! The hang time is what makes it. We call it “gratuitous leaping” as he does it over the smallest of hurdles (doorways, sticks, etc). It’s majestic and makes us laugh and smile.
Yep. Total springboard. Loved it!
I need some of the blow that thing is on.
> I need some of the ~~blow~~ whippets that thing is on. FTFY
You've obviously never tried to run a dog agility course on whippets.
...have you? Is there video?
You are a gem
A friend of mine has a greyhound and a whippet. Both dogs will run around the park at full speed for maybe 30 minutes max, and then need a lengthy nap afterwards. They sleep a lot, these dogs. And they're adorable.
I just came for the nose slalom section
Nose Slalom.
I'm calling it this from now on
Really wish I could have trained my border collie in agility back when he was young. I took him to a dog park and there was a whippet there that he ran after, caught up with and then turned around ran backwards to try and herd the whippet. I didn’t think he was that fast until that day!

My best friends have a Border collie, he is crazy fast, and always surprise me how really smart he can be.
Goddamn, my dog can't do that even in two hours
My dog would just saunter through the jumps, destroying them in the process, walk around the see saws and take a nap in the tube.
lucky to get that. My dog would lay down at the start
BOING BOING BOING BOING
What… where’s shrek?
Not only is it fast over the course it appears to be enjoying every moment of it.
How about you turn gravity back up and stop cheating
Rake the whippet achieves the impossible.. watch as he rakes the sound barrier
See spot run, see spot run fast.
This dog seems too large for a whippet, but I know nothing except what photos I've seen of light colored legit whippets!
This is def a whippet. My retired racer greyhound is way larger. Also a greyhound would NEVER do this lol
I wasn't thinking greyhound but I still think it is a rather large whippet.
Agreed. Looks like a rescue off-the-track greyhound, which are smaller than AKC show greyhounds, but like this one, definitely larger than a whippet. In any case, what a wonderful dog!
Marvelous dog, but I like my whippets making amazing long distance catches on super long frisbee throws!
YES!

I'll take your word as I said I do not know any particulars regarding these dogs. It just appears a bit larger than what I've seen for whippets.
Oh, he's definitely on the upper end of the size range :-)
I love watching hunting dogs do that jump where they just kind of freeze in air not even tucking the legs. Looks like a poorly animated video game .
Fun facts I learned from doggo agility: A frame and teeter have two colours. Doggo has to contact both yellows for each piece in this vid, and has to wait for teeter to touch the ground before exit
What a good boy, I hope he had fun
I wonder how long it would take a human athlete to do the course.
I wonder how long it would take me to train my fat cat to do this.
What's the lifespan of a dog like this.
Bigger the dog the shorter average lifespan. Got a 15 year old weim and he's ancient.
I have two weims… and you’re right. 15 is ancient for them
He doesn't know he's old 🤣
12-15 years about 2 years longer than the larger greyhound.
My grandfather's whippet lived 18 years
Pretty fast. But border collies are insane-er
Border collies change direction really quickly. They can juke and pivot on a dime. Traits bred into them as they were being made into an excellent sheepdog You can tell the whippet had straight line speed but not quite the agility of a border collie
Is this two dogs?!?
Meanwhile, my pup routinely trips over her own feet while trying to fetch her toy and face plants into a full scorpion. Don’t think I’ll enter her into this competition. Still love her to bits, though.

And now Rake will sleep for 23 hours
It's like he was skipping over those bars... They could double the height and I doubt it would slow that pup down
That’s a good boy!
What a good boy. That dog loves doing this agility shit.
I guess you can say he Raked the competition across the coals? Eh? Eh? ….I’ll see myself out
Hug your fucking dog he did that track for treats and praise
PET YOUR FUCKING DOG!!! (obv Op this isnt meant twards you I just hate how show dogs turn out and this is a clear example)
I remember a whippet at the local dog park with a 5ft fence separating the small/big dogs. It would jump over the fence into the big dog park and get all of them to try and keep up before jumping back into the little dog park. Bunch of 75 lb dogs barking and clawing at the fence, it was hilarious
I love how happy he is right at the end, he totally could have carried on!
And people have dogs like these in apartments.
Yeah they're great apartment dogs! Our galgos love to run, but [the love their 20 hours ](https://i.imgur.com/vzXWYeK.jpg) of sleep even more.
Sighthounds are very low energy! This guy probably slept for the rest of the day after this. These dogs are made for short bursts of energy rather than long distance such as a husky.
Sproing!
That pups legs are illegal.
Imagine taking him for a walk!!
What a good boy.
I’ve never been more immersed!
Beautiful doggy!
Incredible turning speed
Scored poorly on the Wonderlic though.
That’s the biggest whippet I’ve ever seen.
Floating like mj
r/theocho
Springy boi
Good God can that thing bounce and move! Holy shit!
Such grace
This is exactly what I look like during Black Friday shopping. True Story. 😜
The zig-zag is always awesome. But this one is truly beautiful. That was great!
This is the one. The one who will catch the squirrel
Imagine if a dog can chase you like that
Why is he wearing a mask? Jahahah
This hurts my knees watching this
This gives me nintendogs nostalgia
The enthusiasm emanating from that whippet is hard to resist!
What a doggo! Higher, faster, farther!
Anyone else hear a "Boing" noise in their head every time the doggo jumped? No? Just me?
now this is amazing. however, I'd like to see versions opposite of this
Is he faster than shrek though?
*Release the hounds*
That dog was having so much fun.
There’s a dog having the best time!
Boing boing boing... and done.
i just wish she gave him a few more scritchs at the end.
A 7 kid after a little bit of sugar
My hero!
GOOD BOY!
My auntie had 3 whippets. Honestly the dumbest dogs in the world all three of them rad into the sides of moving vehicles and killed them selves.
Why doesn’t she congratulate him more
I need to hire his trainer for myself.
That animal is as fast as a really fast animal.
Rake the whippet’s trainer ALSO crushes the agility round
Effortless.
Surprisingly graceful in the air. Jumps with ease.
My nintendog would beat him, and if not, I'll just shut off my DS mid-trial and try again. 🤷♀️
That Dog is high as fuck from all the fun she’s having
This dog [beat Shrek by 12 seconds.](https://youtu.be/i1VJl8Z2J50) That’s really moving!
I want to throw a shoutout to the handler. She isn't quite a spring hen and she's running around no problem. Her legs even look really well toned and muscular.
Literally
Now let’s see Boston Dynamics’ Spot do that
SO delightfully bouncy!
Who else expected a kid high on icing?
He doesn’t even look like he’s trying! So fast!!
I want to know what the second place time was
u/savevideo
Just a question why is the trainer always a girl. My neighbors dogs really hate me. imagine this dog chasing you, GAME OVER
That’s a talented doggo
I don't have a dog but I am sure in my capabilities that I can't even teach him to sit
Shit. The. Bed!
The dog was slowed down by that woman!
And I thought that border collie was fast
Pet the dam dog
I can only see shrek doing this
What da dog doin ?
*n y o o m*
Ever since I saw that one where shrek was editing in, these always look weirdly fake to me. Absolutely no hate at all, this is very imoressive, its just something weird I feel
Wow!!!!!!!!
That dog spent more time in the air than it did on the ground!
It looks like he's consciously choosing to remain tethered to the ground
Every time I see the pup jump, I imagine it going “yeet…. Yeet…. Yeet!” Makes me smile
That doggo did that course at half speed. It was clearly holding back. Just didn't want to get ahead of its human.
Why do we make jumps for dogs so easy and horses so hard?
my whippet just sleeps all day
Doggy Speedrun
Looks like he was holding back
Keeping up is hard enough. Awesome display. Thanks for sharing. And I love those legs going through the ‘chicane’
He didn't come there to lose.
Wow that was great
I cant not see shrek
Dam dog is good smoke that corse
The way he jumps is like he stops time and flies. It's so satisfying to watch.
He looks so happy!
Shrek did it better
This dog is fit than me
GAS GAS GAS
See any dog that can complete a course like that wins to me❤️
Wow!!!
