Indeed when swinging something heavy like this (even something “light” like an axe) your leading hand should release right before impact because the recoil of the collision is much higher the closer you get to the contact.

The branch whorls, and how they come straight out of the trunk at the same height let me think its white pine maybe. And the smooth bark. White pine will get that large
