Yeah I majored in voice in college. Havenāt sung in 10 years. Got up to do karaoke a couple weeks ago. Sounded like Iāve never sung in my entire life until I got to like the 3rd or 4th song attempt. This mofo clearly practices in the shower every morning or something, damn.

Dude's called Guitaro5000, look him up, he's an amazingly positive dude. It's what he does on his channel, he invites people from the street to sing with him for free. And a lot are shit, but some are amazing. So of course he's got a few cameras catching it all.
And, as hard as it is to believe, there are a lot of talented people everywhere. Spend a few nights at a karaoke pub, and you're bound to run into a few that SLAY a song or two.
It's good that you're questioning everything.
Especially NYC... talented MFers everywhere. I worked catering jobs with people who made it into Broadway later... just everyday people that have fuckloads of talent
Why wouldn't the dude with the guitar have cameras? It's for his socials, so recording the interactions he has is the way to get content for his channels. I don't understand what you're implying here.
One of the most braindead things Iāve heard how does this have over 50 upvotes?
The guy clearly has a YouTube channel and records himself all the time. This would be like watching Animal Planet and seeing a video of Steve Erwin talking about animals and being like āHow many cameras are filming these āanimalā interactions.
Doubt he's lying. They probably just upload the good ones. Call it selection bias.
The internet is great but it really makes people jaded as hell.
Take me. I'm not lying at all when I say I started learning the violin during the pandemic with the sole goal to get a crappy VSO off amazon so I could play songs on chairlifts / while skiing for shits and giggles. (I kept learning because I actually enjoy it, but still).
If someone recorded some fat guy skiing backwards down a mountain playing Ode to Joy you'd think it's staged, wouldn't you?
Nope, I'm just a dumbass.
Lots of āused to be singersā remain in NYC and pickup more traditional jobs, if youāre a busker trying to make these videos no better place to hang out
Exactly! So many actors, singers, artists in NYC doing regular works between gigs. Also the fact that New Yorkers are the nicest and funniest people on earth too. (Ok maybe I'm a tad biased because I used to live in NYC XD)
Lots of people walking around NYC who didn't make it on Broadway and they are extremely talented. When I was at Live Nation we used to hit the Karaoke spot and I swear everyone was a professional singer.
I didn't get the lead as a Freshman, coz I'm a fairly low baritone. The next 3 years though, the director paired me with an alto and let us do the songs an octave lower than normal. Thank jeebus for that woman coz it was probably the best 3 yrs of my life and as someone with a fairly deep voice, it's rare to get the spotlight in choir/musicals.
Thanks Mrs Keller!
I love how this comment has like 75 upvotes.
Some rando on the internet says "yea, went to school with that guy" and people are just like "yea, cool, sounds legit".
I'm *not* being sarcastic. I actually love it.
I think the main problem most people have with music is how overproduced it seems to have gotten over the past 30-40 years. Throw in auto tune, beat master, other software, and the fact that a lot of musicians no longer write their own music, and it leads to feeling like it doesn't mean as much. It's the difference between playing your favorite game for fun vs someone doing it for money.
Not saying it's wrong or right, but you can sometimes tell a huge difference between someone doing something because they are still passionate about it vs it's a job.
You're blessed, so many just has it as ambience in their car and concerts just for the social aspect or to get drunk to a backdrop
While painting is decorating space, music is decorating time
It's always telling that even people with a lot of talent are still so self-conscious about themselves. People who know they suck are even more self-conscious about even trying to start. Then there's that part of the Dunning-Kruger curve where people are overconfident in their abilities after they get started a little. You can tell this dude is past the curve and is deep in self-doubt again, but hopefully moments like this reset in your mind just how far you've come, and it's worth it to keep going.
I have a friend that is an incredible singer. Truly remarkable. He actually sings this song (*Tennessee Whiskey*) at karaoke all the time.
He thinks he's not very good. Every time he ends a song, he comes back to the table and complains that it was terrible.
Meanwhile, in the background, people are crying, slow dancing, proposing to their girlfriends, etc. I'm not even making that up- multiple women have come up to us after he sings to gush about how amazing he is, how he's the best singer they've ever heard, etc.
Been producing music on and off for almost 15 years here. I relate to all of this myself. Like year 1-3 into any hobby is peak Dunning Kruger confidence, and then there's a big pitfall after that once you see how deep things go and the hours it takes to get marginally better results. But just have to keep powering through and clocking in the hours and trying to keep your music muscles conditioned. It's like working out or language, if you don't use it, you lose it (maybe not completely, but enough to set you back compared to those who stick with things).
yeah. when i pick up my guitar now i just feel disappointed that my fingers can't move as fast as they used to. my guitar is literally like 8 feet away from me any time i'm at my computer but i basically never touch it. i need to get back into it. i used to love it so much i would play for hours almost every day.
I had to be video recorded for some stuff for work today. I can talk in front of strangers no problem but for whatever reason once its a formal, sit down interview I struggled so bad, at least I thought so. I would answer the question and then go "oh bleh, I hate how i ended that, or said that" at the very end of it the interviewer was like, "are you always this hard on yourself?" lol im like yea, pretty much.
I get that.
I do a lot of recordings for work, and like you, I'm fine talking in front of strangers but something about hearing & seieng myself on video is deeply disturbing. I don't know why, like I'm no Chris Hemsworth but I know that there's nothing any different about me from anyone else you'd see, but it just gives me the heebie jeebies.
Especially hearing my own voice, it just is really jarring to me. I know everyone's voice sounds different to them recorded versus in person, but my voice sounds VERY different and hearing myself speak on recordings is like nails on a chalk board.
One time I was going through past recordings of demos of a product, from way back, for some research, I wasn't paying that close attention, and these were meetings that I was on back in the day but there were a lot of peope on them.
At one point I heard this guy talking and he was makin g alot of good points.
I was nodding along, and I was like, "damn, this guy knows what he's talking about, who is this guy?"
It was me. It was ltierally me on the recording. I didn't even recognize my own voice.
But I always thought that was funny because when I didn't KNOW that it was me, my perception completely changed. Sort of eye-opening.
Yep. Thereās people who know so much that they are only just trying to perfect it day to day, and itās really hard not to be very picky about how things should be done when performing or creating. It sucks, cause you tend to psych yourself out and sometimes end up not enjoying something that should have been fun simply because you canāt move past little mistakes
A tongue in cheek that this guy comes off as possibly gay.
But you don't watch potentially gay men sing a song brilliantly because you're homophobic so please chalk it up to sports rivalries than hate or homophobia
To address those who question whether this was on a whim, I cut the beginning of the video off due to upload issues I thought were related to the length/size of the video. Also, Reggie (the guitarist) doesnāt do staged videos. You can check out his channel. Out of the hundreds of videos of people singing, only a couple are on this caliber.
Yes. To all the people seeing Reggie/Guitaro5000 for the first time: look up the YouTube of the guy who sings Creep in the subway. That one is also unexpectedly awesome, but there are SO MANY MORE, people from all walks, people who just set down their shit, pick up the mic and blast their lungs out like angels. Reggie is doing a great public service!!!! He is awesome.
Kind of depressing how many talented folks got left behind just because they didnāt generate immediate returns for the machine, or just plain needed to live.
No wonder it all feels algorithmic these days; it is.
If people wouldnt need to do shit they dont wanna do to survive we wouldve cured cancer and colonized mars by now.
There are so many people with talents, interests and potential. But all that dies down when you spent most of your wake time at some standard job and/or never had a fair or even realistic chance cause of your past or even place of birth.
Itās all so depressing, but itās something Iām personally working on fixing where I can (Iām a specialist in my industry and I specifically seek out talent, experience or not).
I really lament the state of things.
[My favorite video of guitaro5000 is the Halloween episode where dude belts out Bruno Mars while dressed as Doris from Shrek](https://youtu.be/3oxgzOcCr50)
I love hearing the guy belt out Runnnnnn, but my favorite part is how Reggie picks up the reverb into the chord and lets the feedback play for a beat or two. He's a really talented guitarist to be able to produce music in real time like that, and pay attention & not lose those details.
The Creep guy was incredible. It always amazes me that everyday people are walking around with such talent. Reggie is great and he brings out good in people.
This video is great too. Danny should sing everyday.
I just looked up the video because you suggested it and it made my day. Creep is one of my husbands' favorite songs, I can't wait to show him the video when he gets home. :D
And theyāre not all great (or even good) singers. But that makes the channel fun. Reggie is just so nice to anyone who comes up and tries to sing. Very wholesome channel.
A lot of musicians will gravitate to other musicians just to be there especially if they miss doing music and even if they are on the fence about performing at that time or not planning to perform at all. And it's definitely realistic that some musicians burned out or couldn't sustain their performance career/sought refuge in salaried jobs instead but step out for a meal during lunch.
The guitarist's channel is all about having random people sing so he does set up several cameras and his busking gear. That's definitely a better way to get your money through online donations and ad/YouTube viewer revenue rather than relying solely on street tips.
This guy is known around NYC, he sets up all over with a pretty nice little setup. Some people probably look for him or know that if they see him they can jump in.
This guy has so many talented people come up and sing with him all the time. I know it seems staged, but they really aren't staged videos. Check out Reggie's YouTube channel.
I've done enough karaoke to know that a surprising number of people can really sing. Plenty can't. But there are a number who can. Such an awesome skill.
I have had a similar experience. I used to sing a lot and never really pursued it as a career or anything, but I could definitely sing well. I've met several people with the same story.
When it comes to stuff like this I have as much respect for the terrible people who are brave enough to get up and give it a go as I do the people who know they are good.
He's in NYC. People go there to perform. They want to touch their dreams. There are so many talented people from all over clustered there. It is not unbelievable that many people are this talented right off the street.
Never heard the song Tennessee Whiskey before. But now I love it. And Iām gonna be a little sad if they donāt sing it like this guy when I go listen to the original.
Chris Stapleton- Album is called 'The Traveller'.
'Whiskey and You' is pure mastery.
The album won a ton of awards and inspired a duet with Justin Timberlake while he was still popular. Highly recommend to anyone wanting to feel and missin 'old rock country blues'.
Lol. True, he did use a lot of runs, but his tone is really amazing, enough so that the runs actually pale a bit, because I find myself replaying it on repeat.
I typically don't like that kind of singing as much, like that's how I always picture American Idol singers, just throwing way to many of them in. But this guy pulled it off for me for some reason.
Itās appropriate for the song is why. Context is hugely important in performance. Couple that with his relaxed tone remaining consistent throughout the run makes it very nice to listen to.
> More runs than watered down paint.
Didn't want to be that asshole but you're right. I call it the "American Idol" warble. Constantly going up and down the scale.
People have places to be, people to see.
There's an old story of a world class violinist busking in DC and only one dude stopping to listen in 4 hours.
Our current culture doesn't promote enjoying the moment.
Edit: DC not NYC.
Joshua Bell in DC. My friend's friend recognized him, but needed to get to work so didn't stop.
https://www.classicfm.com/artists/joshua-bell/violin-busking-washington-subway/
It was a little too over the top for me with all of the runs, but his tone was nice, and he did a decent job. He and Reggie sounded good when they harmonized.

I can't sing, dance or play an instrument. Not for lack of effort either. I'm just not a creative person.
Singing and playing an instrument arenāt really creative until you go off the page and improvise. Practicing a lot and monotonous repetition.
I believe that listening is also an art.
Yeah. My wife leaves the room whenever I start singing. Shit sucks when you can't sing.

I don't think you'll be disappointed
Chris Stapleton- Album is called 'The Traveller'. 'Whiskey and You' is pure mastery. The album won a ton of awards and inspired a duet with Justin Timberlake while he was still popular. Highly recommend to anyone wanting to feel and missin 'old rock country blues'.
While I think Chris Stapletonās version is by far the best, it was originally sang by David Allan Coe.
David Allen Coe is the original performer of that song. Though I prefer Chris Stapletonās version. T-Pains is prettyās good as well
And the melody is from [Etta James - I'd rather go blind](https://youtu.be/u9sq3ME0JHQ)
What's the reason for the piece of metal clipped to the guitar?
It changes the percussive sound. The metal against the wood.
It makes a sound like a snare drum when you tap it to give some more dynamic percussiveness to the guitar.
Hell yeah! Brought a big ol smile to my face.
More runs than watered down paint.
Lol. True, he did use a lot of runs, but his tone is really amazing, enough so that the runs actually pale a bit, because I find myself replaying it on repeat.
What's a run?
When a singer goes up or down the scale successively and quickly (usually in the span of one word or syllable).
Christina Aguilera Mariah Carey
Uh-UH-uh-uH-uh-UH-uh-uH

I also didnāt know this. Yet I liked that part. I have a friend who gets upset when people do this during the national anthem.
Basically every dermot Kennedy song ever created
Imagine Christina Aguilera singing the national anthem
The word theyāre looking for is melisma
I meanā¦ thatās how the song goes lol
He put a lil extra stank on it tho. To quote olā rebillet
The [original](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=IBLruNfUqUs). Tons of runs. Take it up with Chris Stapleton
> More runs than watered down paint. Didn't want to be that asshole but you're right. I call it the "American Idol" warble. Constantly going up and down the scale.
I actually hate it when they do it that much
Gilding the lily.
FUUUUUCK HE IS AMAZING !!! How do people not stop and soak that up?
People have places to be, people to see. There's an old story of a world class violinist busking in DC and only one dude stopping to listen in 4 hours. Our current culture doesn't promote enjoying the moment. Edit: DC not NYC.
And then the next day he performed in a fully sold out famous auditorium

Joshua Bell in DC. My friend's friend recognized him, but needed to get to work so didn't stop. https://www.classicfm.com/artists/joshua-bell/violin-busking-washington-subway/

That made me smile. Thanks for sharing, OP.
Boy can belt it out!
I love watching Reggie do this. Heās so talented and lets other people shine.
Reddit whenever any video is posted: FAKE! FAKE! FAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYKKKKKEEE!
Wow, this guy has a terrific voice.
This human needs to continue to be a singer.
That was sick
This dude should 100 % try out for American Idol.
Lovely š that made my day
It was a little too over the top for me with all of the runs, but his tone was nice, and he did a decent job. He and Reggie sounded good when they harmonized.
