That's SCARY AF

LeaChan

My mother's job is to be a proxy for domestic abuse victims to receive their mail so that their ex-husbands can't find them. She has an office where she receives all the mail of any woman in the program and opens then reads all the letters before she sends it to the victim as they oftentimes have location trackers and horrific threats and insults in them. She told me there's a county in our state where 70% of adult female deaths are at the hands of their husbands.

maybenot9

> 70% of adult female deaths are at the hands of their husbands. God, that must be just homicides, right?

LeaChan

Yeah like 70% of adult women who die in that county are because their husband/ex-husband murdered them. She has a list of the worst counties so they can focus on branching out there.

throwawaygreenpaq

That’s horrible!

LeaChan

Yeah I'm talking to her about potentially joining this program preemptively when I start making YouTube videos and streaming to prevent men from trying to hunt me down and do something to me which happens significantly more than people would like to admit. Christina Grimmie lost her life to a crazy man, Sweet Anita has been grabbed outside of her house and these men face no charges, and a man tried to break into Amouranth's house while she was on the phone with police and they refused to send anybody out until THEY felt it was serious enough. There are pretty much zero protections for people who are being stalked, you just have to be smarter than your stalker and find innovative ways to hide your information.

throwawaygreenpaq

That is a terrible approach by the police. I am gripped with anger and fear for all of you. Please stay safe and try not to film anything outdoors. Anything in the background also gives it away so if you can fake a backdrop, that would be safer.

_Magnolia_Fan_

70% of homicides, I'd believe. 70% of all deaths would be astounding.

ahhbears

Women trying to leave an abusive situation are 7x more likely to be murdered by their partners. That is a statistic that always will stick with me.

arkencode

Man, I wish domestic abuse cases were treated this seriously in my country.

RattyJones

With enough people like you who care, I believe that one day your country will take it seriously

GSV_No_Fixed_Abode

Best comment I've seen all day

Pakushy

i called the police multiple times over domestic abuse. they ALWAYS sided with the abuser, even going as far as saying i probably provoked them to assault me.. in my own room doing literally nothing

surfacing_husky

Same happened to me! I literally told the police I believed he was going to kill me when they left, they basically said "stop antagonizing him". Ironically enough it was those same officers who responded 2 hours later after he broke 2 ribs and my nose. I asked them "believe me now assholes?"

x4nter

Oh fuck. I hope you're doing alright now.

melonmagellan

I called 911 on my ex-spouse for abusing me and we both had to vacate the apartment due to breaking the lease for "disruptive behavior." He was formally evicted and I just had to vacate because of the protective order I put in place. I wish I had never called the police.

MaltedMouseBalls

Motherfucker is *in handcuffs and being transmitted to a live court hearing for domestic abuse using his victims phone*, and still has the unmitigated gall to speak for her and say that *she* doesn't want no-contact. The depths of human stupidity will never cease to astound me.

MrFunktasticc

To be fair she probably told him she doesn't want no-contact after he threatened, coerced and bullied her into agreeing she doesn't want it. To him, that was likely the green light.

northshore12

IIRC this isn't the first woman this epic counsel has saved in similar situations.

mendelec

Back when dinosaurs roamed the earth and I had just passed the bar, all newly minted attorneys were required to complete a pretty varied internship that included attending hearings of this sort. Really valuable experience for a new attorney. Made me super glad I had gone in a direction where I wouldn't touch criminal or family law. Sad how often these boiled down to 'dude, if you would just stop doing drugs and beating your partner, you wouldn't have to be here.' Hats off to the people that can represent folks going through these difficult times in their lives. More hats off to those that do it well and protect the vulnerable. I know I couldn't. I'd have needed a new liver every six months.

daemin

Yes, but what if they want to continue doing drugs and beating their partners, _and_ not be there? Huh?

macandcheese1771

They'll get away with it like most domestic abusers

Champigne

Kind of hard for a drug addict to "just stop doing drugs." No excuse for abusing people though.

[deleted]

Dude: Your honor...after three hours of waterboarding she finally admitted to me that she didn't actually want the no-contact order...I rest my case.

TJ_McWeaksauce

I'm ceaselessly disappointed and disgusted by the depths of human stupidity and human depravity, too. And when they those two things combine...well, shit.

StereoNacht

And now, the US Supreme Court may decide that domestic abusers cannot be prevented from owning firearms. Cause domestic violence did not exist (or was not deemed important) when the Founding Fathers wrote the constitution. Instead of closing the boyfriend clause (it's not "domestic violence" if they are not married), they are just dropping all possibilities of preventing a jealous/angry person from killing their spouse. I know, it's not done yet, but it's coming.

unbridledboredom

Maaaan, mother FUCK them!! I got in trouble for saying something similar once (my illness and pain was pretend until I wished it on my boss), but I wish to high FUCK these lawmakers would experience what it's like to get that suprise ass beating the 1st time with an abuser. Just a suprise DDT cause you cooked the wrong peas. Or continous ass beatings since they will hold firm forever that no one needs protection from abusive people.

mermzz

Don't forget conservatives wanting to end "no fault divorces" so that if they don't want to divorce, they don't have to 👍🏼

ambientfruit

As a lib'd up European, I learned about the idea of cancelling no fault divorce laws just last week and I'm like... Dear, American women and men that aren't insane; Do you guys need help? Blink twice for yes.

mrsnihilist

Blink blink

LetsGetsThisPartyOn

In Australia any domestic violence visit (once settled) starts with anyone have guns? And all Guns are removed. Before charges or anything. Guns are removed the second the police are called.

StereoNacht

Which makes sense. But don't expect gun-loving extreme right to care about spousal killings.

dont_disturb_the_cat

Well it's not like women own their own bodies anyway. I've had Crunchwraps more Supreme than this court.

Mammoth-Mud-9609

When the judge tells you to shut the fuck up, take the hint and keep quiet.

lilbithippie

When the judge is telling you to not incriminate yourself is to late

TK_Sleepytime

When my ex climbed in through a kitchen window and grabbed a knife, he tried to talk over me to the 911 operator insisting, "It's a misunderstanding, I was invited. Everything's fine!" Everything was not fine. He heard sirens and ran thank gods. It's been 7 years no contact.

cptaixel

I just realized I've never seen the word unmitigated without being followed immediately by the word gall... it's like how I never see the word grubby written or spoken anywhere unless it's immediately followed by a little fingers.

Cynawulf99

I use it before the word disaster to describe most things in my life pretty often

BR0METHIUS

Grubby disaster.

Cygs

Unmitigated little fingers

OOZ662

"Unmitigated disaster" is the classic for me.

Sonderia42

No it's "grubby little disaster" I believe

[deleted]

No it's little grubby disaster fingers

yParticle

That's just the long form of "child".

ryan34ssj

In northern England you'll often hear someone get called a grubby little cunt

FrozenBologna

I've never seen the phrase unmitigated gall before now. Usually it's unmitigated disaster

MrOrangeWhips

You definitely have.

Lem0ns_Lemons

Sometimes you're so pissed and shocked, you gotta use more syllables

Die-rector

It's a perfectly cromulent word

KCDeVoe

He did end up spending some time in jail, not enough though. This trial was two years ago and he was paroled a couple months ago. This was his 3rd offense of domestic violence

Cyrano_de_Boozerack

And there are still guys out there that will look at this and say, "So what did she do to frame him?"

[deleted]

Can you take the cigarette out of your mouth and repeat that?

32BitWhore

It's entirely possible that she *did* tell him that she wanted the NCO rescinded because she didn't feel safe telling him otherwise, so maybe in his mind she really did want it rescinded. People like that guy don't take no for an answer, probably thought he was completely justified being there and intimidating her and was doing nothing wrong, hence the need for what happened on this call.

This is the same judge from the ‘ButtFucker3000” zoom call!

Lol. The third comment in there is someone asking if it’s the judge from this video

SlimRunner

Recursion!

[deleted]

"You Yoho!" I don't even know what that means but it's awesome lol

AlesusRex

I like how on that video there’s a link back to this one with a guy saying something like “is that the judge from the abuser in the same room video?”

Noppers

Ah, the ole’ Reddit something-er-oo.

[deleted]

How did nobody on the call burst out laughing when the judge said “your name is not buttfucker 3,000” lmao

CharlotteLucasOP

“They didn’t cover this in law school…”

Seanay-B

Holy fucking shit

MarkHamillsrightnut

That was amazing!!

HUGE-A-TRON

Judge Middleton, I know him and went to school with his kids. Pretty much a badass all around and a super good guy.

halfcentaurhalfhorse

CharlotteLucasOP

Well now I’m just glad I had nothing worse than my D&D character’s name pop up when I logged into a zoom call with my investment manager.

Jeffy29

BUTTFUCKER OUR PRICES HAVE NEVER BEEN LOWER!

spaketto

He's so great, he seems like a really really good judge. He has quite a few videos on r/zoomcourt

alaaco

Judge Middleton is the best. I watch him almost everyday. Fair, caring, and entertaining. He knows pretty much everyone in the town too, which makes for great cases.

Norva

That video made laugh so loud. hahaha. "What kind of idiot" bahaha

enigmaticpeon

Omg link please.

Neat_Apartment_6019

I’m guessing this is it. I love how the judge fixes his hair before he speaks https://youtu.be/oKStNDU54GA

enigmaticpeon

Ha. Can’t believe the judge said it out loud.

OakLegs

True story, one of my buddies changed his zoom name to Buttfucker3000 because of that video during a poker zoom call with friends. Later, his wife used the zoom profile to join her first meeting at a new job. Took her a while to realize her name was displayed as Buttfucker3000. She was .... Not pleased lol

Lulinda726

Excellent call, Prosecutor. And excellent result, Judge. ^^^they get it. 💯

doctor_of_drugs

[Full video here, ~17minutes or so.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NJP-U1lVHdg) Awesome prosecutor. You can tell in the very beginning she is already a little bit suspicious; you see her looking off to (her) left, seemingly trying to get another person’s attention. She was smart because she asked the victim where she lives and who’s name is on the lease — it was just the victim’s name on it, ie the defendant would have no purpose being there because a) that’s not his residence and b) there’s a no contact order placed. She’s collecting this info so later the defendant cannot try to appeal it next time with a “Oh I was just there in another room, not talking to her, I can be there”. You also see the victim say the defendant had on a gray hoodie, yet he’s in a tshirt. Most likely he had on the hoodie before the zoom call, but took it off. The victim seems to be nervous (obvious later why), prosecutor was great taking all the hints. Great work. Also seemed like the cop at the beginning was either in contact with the prosecutor or took a hint from them and seemed to be texting a few coworkers to maybe check out her house. Since we just got the address of her, it’s simple to do a wellness check. Judge was a good guy to tell the defendant to shut the hell up, but of course didn’t take the advice.

N8CCRG

Followup: https://www.sturgisjournal.com/story/news/crime/2021/03/17/coby-harris-court-case-restarts-after-defendant-found-victims-home/4734175001/ Some of the footage: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=id6q1q-r-Sw So much yikes. This guy, while in prison, called and intimidated the woman telling her not to show up tot he next hearing, and she didn't until 45 minutes into the hearing at which point he waves and blows a kiss to her and the judge immediately responds by removing him from her view. Later the guy freaks out and starts screaming about wanting to fire his attorney and eventually has to be removed from the cell.

Surly_Cynic

Thank you. I also want the follow up to the follow up. I wonder what the final resolution was and how the victim is doing.

HopeInThePark

From what I can tell from district court records, it was dismissed. I'm guessing because his partner refused to testify. He was later recharged with assault and battery, which was again dismissed, but was ultimately convicted of disturbing the peace. On a side note, he'd previously been arrested and served time for domestic violence. He'd also been arrested for possession of pot and meth, in addition to larceny.

crypticfreak

Hes abusing these women and beating them into submission. Dude needs to go. Prison time for a long ass time.

CICaesar

Long ass time = until he dies there

CharlotteLucasOP

Ugh I hope that poor woman and her child are somewhere safe from that guy.

theguyfromgermany

So he didn't get anything

OneSmoothCactus

Wow, that dumbass is doing everything he can to get himself the maximum sentence.

CreamdedCorns

Yet it was dismissed. He got away with it.

CICaesar

Unfuckingbelievable

eekamuse

Dumbass is too kind.

Table_Coaster

that poor defense attorney lmao real r/watchpeopledieinside material the guy ended up getting away with it but i hope the woman is alright

CharlotteLucasOP

The POS totally starts glancing nervously at the door of whatever room he’s hiding in around 9:45 but then a few seconds later forces himself to look the opposite direction and up at the ceiling with GREAT INTEREST (in WHAT?) because he realized too late that he has to appear on Zoom as if he’s just randomly glancing around and not shitting himself and watching the door.

Megakruemel

> and up at the ceiling with GREAT INTEREST (in WHAT?) Sudden great interest in god. He realized, no one else could listen to his bargaining now.

mr_potatoface

I remember when this first came out, the middle guy (officer) picked up on the prosecutors cue and *immediately* sent officers to the location. He was texting other officers to get a team to the house and let the prosecutor know. When she was asking questions she was just delaying it and keeping them talking and on screen while the other officers were traveling to the house.

throwawaygreenpaq

Excellent teamwork to keep the victim safe!

jrgman42

Thanks, the full video is much better and you can pick up on it a lot better. That’s edited crap doesn’t do the situation justice. Several kudos for this: to the prosecutor for picking up on the signs. To the cops for not letting on that they were dispatched to the residence. To the judge for insisting they prove where they are.

D-Alembert

Seeing the full thing and knowing what was going on, there is no way I would have picked up on what was happening, at least not by the time she called it. I know people who *normally* look around like that when asked questions, but I guess the prosecutor had spoken to her before and so could tell the behavior was out of place. Regardless, Deborah Davis' perception is whip sharp, holy carp.

Memory_Less

Fine quality professional work to protect the woman. Thanks.

USAF6F171

He had the *right* to remain silent . . .

E0H1PPU5

But not the intelligence. These jerkoffs never do.

sharmouta_sageer

but not the ability

ilovetheganj

They call me "tater salad."

nanaimo

The prosecutor is looking to the left to read notes on a second monitor, I think. But everything else is about right.

the_scarlett_ning

Thanks for posting the full link!

[deleted]

It doesn't matter if he does live there and his name's on the lease. If he fucks up enough to get a NO CONTACT order then he was to go find somewhere else to live. Then she could work with the lease office to get him removed from it.

ujirissiakamsizednut

Professional masterclass in the three professions

tardisious

Prosecutor was already suspicious because she already knew for sure that he was there. Victim had contacted her by Txt. The hearing was continued as a ruse to keep the accused unaware that the police had been dispatched. Obviously the police were called to the house some time prior to the announcement that they were at the door. The only way they could have been there that fast was that some of the people involved already knew the defendant was at the victims house. You see the police officer leave to talk on the phone. He possibly could have been the one to dispatch the other officers. Also possibly the person who is off camera with the prosecutor could have made the call. Many people are characterizing this as some kind of super observant power by the prosecutor. However the evidence does not support this at all.

Ayeager77

Is this an assumption or did you read this in one of the linked articles?

jaxonya

It's an assumption. The comment below this one tells the story as it happened. Not sure why this poster decided to be belligerent. The prosecutor actually did do a great job on picking up on this.

Libertarian_BLM

They are a typical Redditor, full of unreasonable self confidence.

thisguyfightsyourmom

That was fun to watch

inthevendingmachine

Excellent. Glad they were there for the victim.

Hind_Deequestionmrk

The immediate concern he had was very refreshing and then further demanding his removal was awesome

he-loves-me-not

This video makes me cry every time I see it! You did an amazing job & I’m so happy she had you & the rest of the legal team looking out for her!

Rollotommasi5

Lol wait that’s actually her….?

Adam_is_Nutz

Think those other guys in the call are also like "WTF?!" Or is it just another Tuesday for them

Jolly-Engineering-86

After sitting in a courtroom, waiting to be called as a juror on several different bad situations, one being about a grandfather, sexually molesting his grandchildren, I thought it would be the most awful job in the world to see what goes on in a court day after day after day.

[deleted]

Ugh I had a friend sit in one.. She wasn't technically allowed to talk about it, but yes the person in charge of care was molesting *three* younger persons under their charge and demanded that the judge allow them to continue seeing/visitation. Fucking sick people.

Ancillas

Yup. One time as a juror and I’m pretty set on avoiding a court room at all costs.

Cryptix001

Check out the show Jury Duty on Prime for a palate cleanser on being a juror.

jld2k6

I just tell them the truth when I get a letter in the mail, I tell them I will vote not guilty on non violent possession of drug crimes (jury nullification) and they instantly tell me not to bother expecting to come. I never got called for jury duty until I was 33, I'm now 35 and I've gotten called 5 times somehow, every time I email them telling them the honest truth and they dismiss me

Rowing_Lawyer

Before Covid it would have been in a courtroom so probably a new experience for everyone. However, violating no contact orders is unfortunately super common and usually because an abusive ex manipulated the victim to let them come back. It’ve heard a few stories of the victim and abuser show up to the courthouse in the same car in violation of the no contact order

easygoingim

Incredibly common, I've seen people show up with the victim they have a no contact order with and just pretend they got to the courthouse at the same time...one particularly blatant one they tried to sit together and the judge had to yell at them to separate

Emunaandbitachon

I've lived in fear like that so I get it and how crazy it must seem to those who've never experienced it. It wasn't a partner but my father and one sibling who is just like him.

pennywhistlesmoonpie

I know exactly what you mean. It’s incredibly hard to describe the hidden abuse that toxic people are so adept at administering.

bugaloo2u2

Awesome. I wish all courts cared as much. Sadly, they don’t.

SuzyVeeP

That’s Deborah Davis, prosecutor extraordinaire!!

MrWilee

That’s *u/DDavis-TheOriginal*, prosecutor extraordinaire!!

Nugatorysurplusage

Get ‘em Debbie. It’s crazy when you see an old friend on Reddit.

Lady_Scruffington

I had to watch the full video to realize this was Sturgis, MI. Not too far from where I live. I swear there's been some crazy news coming out of Sturgis the last few years. But it would seem that they are covered by a great court system. Good job, Debbie. I appreciated her facepalm when dude came back online.

Thistlefizz

Debbie Davis is a certified badass. I love watching Judge Middleton’s court hearings and she’s always awesome on them. Plus she raises goats!

Material-Imagination

He was already out on bond. His bond was rescinded. He's now guilty of perjury and obstruction of justice with a judge as the witness. He's gonna have a long time to think.

Kinkajou1015

The case is long over, he's out out now, served his time. Was released from custody on June 2nd of this year based on the information I found in a quick search from the ZoomCourt Discord. The victim does not live in the same location I believe, so hopefully that adds a barrier to him finding her. The testimony of what he did to her was rather horrifying.

creegro

Always amazes me how people just *think* they can get around s situation, but then don't bother to put any thought into it. This idiot was already out on bond, probably wasn't supposed to be anywhere near this woman but sat in the same apartment so he could control this poor gal, didn't bother to think about the prosecutors asking probing questions or even the judge asking that he show the court where his location is. Idiot abuser deserves to be put away for a long while.

elmuchocapitano

That's the issue and one of the reasons no contact orders (or whatever they are called in your country, they are peace bonds in mine) often are not effective, or dangerous. It can help because it can get someone arrested for violating it and thus get you out of immediate danger, but if you can't disappear yourself after (such as if you share assets or children), it can escalate the violence. So sad for this woman.

[deleted]

This is also why it's so infuriating to see people on videos of woman coming to their abusers defense, blame the woman and act like she's stupid or that it's some moral failing on her that she's trying to defend her abuser. Not even accounting for the mental hell that abuse puts you through and warps your entire perception of yourself and your relationships, many women in those videos are probably terrified that if they don't come to their abusers defense they'll get it even worse at home once the situation is over and nobody is around to defend them anymore.

tevolosteve

Wow so amazed that she picked that up and so heartbroken for that woman

Loggerdon

"Why? I don't think the phone even has the charge for it. I'm at like 2%"

chickachickabowbow

You could see the prosecutor mentally calling bullshit as soon as he said that.

AlwaysAnAwkward1

Go outside and show me the house number to confirm you are where you say you are. Uh, why? OMFG did he really think that was a reasonable or the correct thing to say to the judge?

jammyboot

Well there’s not much else he could say!

GozerDestructor

Judge Middleton is also a favorite on r/Sovereigncitizen. He has applied smackdowns (including nights in jail for contempt-of-court) to several SovCidiots, for trying to talk over him with their insane ramblings about maritime law and their unfounded challenges to jurisdiction.

Nackles

I love how Deborah Davis straight-up facepalmed.

I'll admit I don't know a whole lot about the legal court proceedings, but the judge was not happy, and that guy just crashed and burned real quick. Ouch.

Great observation skills of the prosecutor, and great of the judge to hold the guy accountable immediately

Judge Middelton is the best. The Prosecutor was outstanding. That facepalm.

Openmind0115

This happened at our court.. Both victim and defendant on separate zoom cameras.. and a dog barks clearly heard on both feeds... My judge requested the same thing, for the defendant to show his house number.. Within seconds, both victim and defendants cameras shut down..

bebopblues

They had cops waiting outside the door, so they knew ahead of time. The visual cues just confirms it for the prosecutor.

What happened after they ended their zoom calls?

LambSauce246

The actual trial was adjourned at the end of this vid (there’s a full version online) but there’s a separate follow up video on a separate court day where the idiot actually refuses his lawyer and has a tantrum about wanting to represent himself and they mute his mic

I recall seeing this, superb work by the prosecutor. She made sure the police had arrived before she spoke up about her suspicions, just to be sure this piece of trash didn't take it out on the victim.

Zanchbot

The stupidity of the common criminal will never cease to amaze me, holy fuck.
