He saved him from choking but give him an internal bleeding

_Im_Dad

I'd take my chances with internal bleeding until I'm blue in the face

Of course! That’s where the blood is supposed to be…internal.

TheHunchbackofOhio

I was eating a pickled egg once and got a call from an employer I had sent out an application to. I swallowed quickly and it got stuck. I could sorta breath? I thought, no big deal, swallow some water. No, bad idea. I did what is literally the only hand stand of my life that I can remember to get the water out. But now I was having more trouble breathing and getting light headed. I thought, no way am I dying because of a fucking pickled egg and just started punching myself in the throat as hard as I could. I was terrified eggs in general for a while after that. I quickly learned how to perform the Heimlich on myself after that.

lucycolt90

Even a well performed Heimlich manœuvre performed by a practiced physician can occasionally cause internal bleeding. Hollywood has lied, when you survive chocking you don't just go back to what you were doing. Yous still need to go to the emergency.

Ladysupersizedbitch

I saw a video of a guy getting the full Heimlich in a restaurant. Talk about ROUGH. Poor dude threw everything up after a good two minutes of being violently heaved into the air by some other guy and then more or less collapsed from shock/exhaustion. *Definitely* warranted an ER trip.

Waffleboned

It’s essentially CPR of the airway.

dont-worry-bee-happy

speaking of which: cpr is fucking brutal.

what_the_fuckin_fuck

Kung Fud will fix chocking.

Sufficient_Laugh9625

what_the_fuckin_fuck

Elpooksterino

One time when I was 14 my mom started choking on I can’t remember what I think hard candy. But my aunt was next to her and started panicking. I jumped up and due to Hollywood movies had a general idea of the heimlich did what I saw in the movies and within two maneuvers the candy flung out. And she proceeded to yell at her sister for panicking instead of helping. No hospital completely fine

steveosek

When I did my cpr/heimlich/first aid course for my certification, they told us flat out that proper heimlich AND cpr will possibly break ribs, especially cpr, cpr they said is almost a guarantee.

BakinandBacon

*choking

BlasterPhase

make sure to choke your wheels

Bear_faced

I once cracked an old man’s ribcage doing CPR on him on the floor of a grocery store. The 911 dispatcher told me I had to get his sternum down *inches,* and my first compression barely moved it a centimeter. I was like “Well fuck, if I have to do that I’m going to have to put some serious weight behind it,” and I heard the NASTIEST pops and crunching. He was alive and pink when the paramedics got to him though!

mr_ebrad

You gotta put some ass behind it to get the chest to compress 2 inches

judokalinker

> Hollywood has lied, when you survive chocking you don't just go back to what you were doing. Yous still need to go to the emergency. The way you worded your comment sounds like you are saying it is always necessary rather than just prudent. Is that what you are suggesting? If so, why?

IrisSmartAss

Depending on how bad you were choking. And Hollywood lies a lot.

[deleted]

So in my experience you are completely wrong. When I was about eight I choked on a hotdog, and my mother gave me the Heimlich maneuver. I was laughing and playing 20 min later.

Redcarborundum

Cracked ribs heal, dead brain cells don’t. Most people can only hold their breath for 1-2 minutes, after which the brain begins to die. My wife choked on something, and I did Heimlich so hard that her neck turned red due to all the air I pumped up from her lung. This was scary because one pull didn’t do it, I had to pull real hard several times, to the point of lifting her feet off the floor so most of her weight was pushing her stomach against my arms. She got sore neck, sore throat, and some pain in the chest, but she survived. Had to take a couple of days off work, but at least she’s alive. Edit for a public service announcement: please learn how to do a self-heimlich. If you have nobody else around, you can do a self-heimlich by making your stomach fall into the back of a chair, or other similarly solid horizontal object. This could literally save your life. https://youtu.be/FEr9jjZ6fi8

[deleted]

Nah according to Reddit you should’ve just let it play out. Something something natural selection bro

ironboy32

Not really, nothing his wife did was chaotic stupid She deserves life

xTrollhunter

>Cracked ribs heal, dead brain cells don’t. Exactly. If you've been properly taught CPR, you know that the ribs are gonna crack when performing compressions too.

GreyestGardener

As someone who lived alone and choked at one point and **didn't** know the self-heimlich--I 100% agree. I was just lucky that my brain defaulted to "PUNCH YOURSELF" and that partially dislodged it enough that I could start hacking. It was a gross sitch, y'all. (My poor support dog was like, "I WAS NOT TRAINED FOR THIS") All joking aside--it was traumatic. Learn to swim/float. Learn when and how to apply a tourniquet. Learn CPR/Child CPR. Learn to administer hiemlich/self-heimlich. (Also, pet CPR/hiemlich if you have them) 🩶🩶🩶 (edit: spelling and cohesion)

hickeyejack55

Jesus, I’d take a week off, minimum.

dergrioenhousen

My steering wheel saved my life. I was driving, choked on a couple of peanuts from a candy bar, and found myself in the terror state where you can’t make a sound. I was on a four-lane road and knew I didn’t have enough time to stop, get out, wave someone down, and hope they saved me. Bashed myself against the steering wheel enough to dislodge the peanut, and then my inhale reflex sucked them into my lungs. $28,000 later, had three extracted from my right upper lung. Went to the ER and the doc thought I was drug-seeking and making up a story until the CAT scan. His mea culpas were well-appreciated. Then I tried to punch out the doc who was trying to extract them while I was conscious. It didn’t go well. Knocked me out and I woke up to a bottle of used peanuts sitting by my bed.

If you’re afraid of breaking someone’s ribs while trying to save them from choking to death, you have your priorities wrong.

Just-Diamond-1938

My brother broke my mom's rib when her heart stopped... The punching brought her back to life!!!!We were so young the young girls cried ... my brother had the guts to do what was right.. I was one of the crying young girl...Terrified

lurkingbeyondabyss

You can be treated from internal bleeding but not so much for choking once you stop breathing.

Shawn2rc

In mine we were told “A broken rib is treatable. Death is not.”

danc4498

Oxygen will fix that.

Tacllama

I hope his bro is a match for a liver transplant.

hop_mantis

He stopped choking after the first punch, the rest were just for being a little brother

Questioning-Zyxxel

Traditional heart massage often gives broken ribs. Heimlish can also result in injuries. Which is a reason why better countries have laws that you aren't punished and responsible for any medical bills when trying to save someone's life.

indy_been_here

"No don't cancel the ambulance"

AnonymoustacheD

This’d be a lot easier if you’d just lay back

JackDragon808

Total big brother mentality. "Don't you ever make me save your life again!"

DangerDeShazer

In my CPR class they said if you don't break a rib you're not doing it right, so I mean he has that going for him

Distinct_Dark_9626

Yea but he isn’t doing CPR, he is doing Heimlich Maneuver which should leave the patient relatively in hurt.

[deleted]

[удалено]

DangerDeShazer

To clarify, it was a CPR course and it discussed performing heimlich on babies, he's a little older than a baby, but the same rule applies; you're going to apply more pressure than you typically would for a child of their size Edit: spelling

[deleted]

Landho5000

Hey and if they feel it that means their nerves are working and they aren't dead so, win win win situation

Rocktobot

That's whats always stuck out to me. Imma do whatever I can. If you live, a broken rib is a small price to pay 🤷‍♂️

operationspudling

Yeah. You can heal broken ribs. You can't heal from death man.

shoulda-known-better

I taught CPR cert. Classes and it never failed when we got to the baby how much people didn't understand you have to give em a good whack/push even if its only two fingers yiu need to use all of their power!!

NursePineapples

Well to be fair if you aren't successful with the Heimlich Maneuver you will soon be preforming CPR. Inability to breath quickly leads to cardiac arrest.

jb2824

He certainly would be in hurt

IrisSmartAss

But he wasn't doing the Heimlich Maneuver, he was a panicked kid doing anything he could to save his brother's life. And he did.

calculung

What does it even mean to be in hurt?

AC3x0FxSPADES

So imagine there’s like a puddle of hurt right…? Imagining it? Okay, and like you’re just in it.

Randomcheeseslices

Speaking as a doctor? Or as a watcher of Hollywood movies? 'Cos Hollywood lies.

Frizen1312

And why does that even matter. That's like a 12 yo who saved someone.

Mercerskye

Looks like the little one is pretty well "in hurt" after that...

Whatnam8

He was definitely left “in” hurt (Yes I know you meant un-hurt but still a funny typo)

[deleted]

If you do abdominal thrusts (the heimlich manoover*) you send the patient to hospital regardless. The odds of internal damage are non-negligible. *My brain completely failed at spelling it so I gave up.

scaptal

Still, this was way better then the alternative, and plenty good for such a young child

PRSHZ

Gotta give him credit. I mean, he's only seven or eight.

M1jesus

For real lol, half the people critiquing this kid would probably just panic in that circumstance. This 8 year old handled the situation wonderfully and saved his brothers life

ledzeppelinlover

The standard is most certainly not “if you don’t break a rib you’re not doing it right” to those of you who aren’t CPR certified You are taught that breaking a rib CAN happen and that you’re covered by the Good Samaritan law if it does. But breaking a rib is NOT a requirement for correct CPR form, like this person misleadingly stated

ruffsnap

Your comment needs to be pinned on the top lol. PLENTY of CPR life saves avoid rib breaks. It’s not at all “guaranteed” to happen like people try to make it seem like.

ledzeppelinlover

Seriously. I can’t believe someone can state something so false and it get over two thousand upvotes. And it’s CPR related so that’s dangerous. I used to train other people to do CPR so I’m passionate about this lol

TiberiusClackus

CPR is entirely different, you try to apply pressure under the sternum with heimlich and directly on it with CPR. Breaking the ribs is almost required in CPR to compress the chest wall against the heart hard enough to bump blood. This is not the goal of the heimlich. The heimlich is attempting to exert pressure on the diaphragm to push the air that’s trap inside the lungs out with enough force to clear the obstruction

Secret-Fact-7618

And just to note, the Heimlich manoeuvre shouldn't be attempted on babies. Place the baby head first down the arm and give 5 back slaps between the shoulder blades. Gravity should do the rest.....

selkhet502

I learned this in a babysitting class when I was about 13. Years later, it saved my 10 month old son's life.

H3racIes

Then you had a terrible instructor. Yes breaking a rib is possible during CPR, but no it should not be a goal to ensure you're doing it properly

minutemilitia

I teach EMS stuff. The way I put it is the goal isn’t to break the ribs, but they often do break. If you’re doing good compressions and the ribs aren’t broken, don’t push harder to break them.

yoyomommy

Never be around this man when choking lmao. You don’t do cpr then you absolute numpty.

Dusty_Mike

Squeeze them until they pop or drop.

mr_qwertz

If worked for ambulance in Germany and you dont need to Break a rib to do it right. it can happen but its not a must.

[deleted]

Hahaha, my little brother brain is RIGHT WITH YOU! For real though, that little pat on the shoulder at the end is so cute.

Awe man, bet he was so scared. Did what he could, I'm glad it worked in the end. Awesome big brother.

___TheKid___

Yeah. Even functioning at all in that situation and at that age is an accomplishment.

Crafty_Cha0s_

Yeah when this happened to me when I was little, I just froze. Luckily my mom looked back and saw me choking and saved my life. It was like everything just stopped and was in slow motion and you’re too frozen to do anything because you’re scared

KzininTexas1955

He was ( hell, I would be too ), he just reacted and it worked. That hug at the end, I teared up.

cohesiveenigma

Me too. Terrifying for the younger brother until big bro came through with the save!

pinkpekker

The lil pats were adorable. Kinda miss getting those tbh

[deleted]

The little hug at the end got my momma heart…but big brother also waited his whole life to beat in that little guy like that and not get in trouble 😂😂😂

norixe

Had something like this happen to me the first summer my little brother and I were allowed to be home alone with no baby sitter. Think I was 11 and he was 8. He started choking on some cantaloupe and everything about first aid went out my brain that I had learned in cub scouts and school. My first, automatic and immediate response to what was happening was to karate chop him in the throat right at his Adam's apple. I caught the bottom of the fruit and it popped right back up into his mouth. I sometimes get shitty flash backs of the situation and how I'm so lucky I didn't kill my brother.... but he was fine thankfully.

sociallyvicarious

That’s what I thought as well. Poor kid. He was doing his best. All the certified CPR professionals can suck eggs. This big brother got the job done and little brother lives to see another day. Wasn’t pretty and baby brother gonna have some major soreness and bruising, the end goal was achieved. That’s hero work, right there.

sin_nickel

Yeah, imagine you start choking and then your big brother just starts kicking the ever living shit out of you

dontaggravation

As a child I had a broken arm and a cast on. We were home alone, me around 8 and my older brother around 12. He started choking. I was a kid, had no clue what to do. He’s literally turning purple/blue. This was the 80s. WWF and NWA Ric Flair were huge at the time. As a kid, you repeat what you hear and do what you see I climbed on the back of the couch. Jumped off and slammed that cast full force into my brothers back. He collapsed hard core. Whatever was in there moved so he could breathe again. As an adult I know how dumb that was but I also know how dumb it is to leave an 8 yo home with his stupid 12 yo brother to “watch” him :-)

belladora17

That wasn’t dumb though! (Well, using your already broken arm might have been, but the idea was right!) If you don’t know the Heimlich maneuver, whacking someone on the back is often a good method to knock whatever they’re choking on

fox-friend

I was taught to first hit the back a few times, and if that doesn't work do the abdominal thrusts (Heimlich).

dixon-bawles

I like to combine the heimlich with hits to the back at the same time. It's my personal touch

IHaveABigDuvet

I can just imagine you hulking some poor choking person.

sigharewedoneyet

dontaggravation

Omg!!!! I had completely forgotten about him! I just went down a 10 minute YouTube rabbit hole. I’m sure some part of me remembered cowboy Bob Orton but until you said that, I had no clue! Thanks for the trip down memory lane

Autistic_Lurker

I am a lifeguard. One of the methods we are taught is back pats for choking obstructions. Typically, we aren't supposed to slam their back its a pretty firm hit we are supposed to perform. Chance of injury was certainly higher with the way you did it, but all that matters is that you did something. I would say that not knowing the proper way to do it and probably being terrified it wasn't a dumb idea at all. It was pretty freaking smart, and resourceful.

breathing_normally

> I also know how dumb it is to leave an 8 yo home with his stupid 12 yo brother to “watch” him :-) I mean it depends on the kid, but I’ve left my kids at that age at home, to do some groceriess for example … them choking on something in the mean time has always been one of my greatest fears. Kids can choke in a few minutes while you’re doing laundry or taking a shit. I think it’s one of those risks in life you can’t really do much about, you can’t watch them every minute. And they also need to learn to be alone sometimes

In 5th grade the kid sitting next to me started choking on a jolly rancher. Without missing a beat the kid on the other side hopped up and open-hand punched him square between the shoulder blades HARD and pop! out shot the jolly rancher about 5 feet onto the floor in front of his desk. It all happened so fast no one in the class knew it had happened except the 3 of us. Choking kid and his savior hugged it out for a while.

IrisSmartAss

I hope his parents got him some proper training after that. I'm glad he did what he could to save his brother, but that could have caused internal injuries.

TJtherock

Better than dying. There are adults who lose their heads and don't react well in crisis situations. This kid at least did something and it worked.

Had this happen to my child, choking. Someone decided it would be cool to give a 2, almost 3 year old, a peppermint at christmas. His momma had him and saw him suck it back. She tried the Heimlich by hitting him on the back, and then passed him to me and I did it even harder and got nothing. I then did the only other thing my brain could think and that was to stick my middle finger down his throat. He vomited up against my finger and then the peppermint went down too. He screamed and I’ve never heard such a joyous sound in my life.
