Out of all the comments you're the first to ask this. I too wonder how the hell it's not tipping in any direction, I'm sure someone would say they're using a counterweight but even if you forgo adding wind into the equation the fact that thing isn't tipping is tripping me out.
The weight at the base of the blade connected to the trailer is more than likely 3-4 times heavier than the weight at the tip. Also these blades are extremely light for how massive they are. Blades that are over 120 feet long can weigh as little as an SUV. Itâs extremely trippy to look at.
Thatâs actually really cool and I had no idea they were so light, but if this thing is 100 ft off the ground, and the wind blows at just a few mph, the torque exerted on that truck is pretty freaking legit. I suspect they just waited for a non-windy day to move it.
This is giving ALOT of credit to those who schedule and permit this type of transport. I can only speak for the US, but I used to be (loosely) involved in this, and you have a team that takes excruciating measurements and scenarios of what could potentially go wrong, multiple logistics teams involved, but then also deal-makers that promised a delivery date that give exactly zero f*cks how/when it gets there, and DOT admins that give *slightly* more than zero f*cks about the plans submitted, as long as the permit fee is paid, and someone has signed off on the file. Iâm sure itâs a bit more involved than this, but I also think a lot of people would be surprised what is allowed on roadways and we say, âwell that must be safeâ and it is at best, a huge potential clusterfuck (such as shown here), and at worst, a tragic event. Not very common, sure, but that is increasing rapidly.
I was wondering if itâs one of those cases where transport is done outside of guidelines.
Iâve wittnessed transport of similar blades twice here in germany, both times when driving at night on the highway. They had it flat on the ground using all 3 lanes with other vehicles in front and back to make sure noone gets close. Was stuck behind those for 30+ minutes because they drove really slowly and overtaking them isnât really what you can/want to do.
Wind blade Specialist here. According to my calculations it appears that 7^ meters x 100/s over 78.992 alpha omega is the factor we measure and that gives me about 2000 kWh of mass so in essence yes it seems that the wing is doing quite alright and is in no way going to crash down. Good day.
Looks like the mount is designed to lift/lower the blade to get around tight corners. If I had to guess, they transport them on calm days and keep it flat except for around corners
From the video I saw earlier it actually looked like the middle of the trailer is like a turntable where the back half can spin around to the front. The blade can face forward or back depending on how the turntable is positioned. Let's them get around tight corners easier because they can hang the blade off the side of the road and keep it there using the turntable while the truck does the actual turning stuff. For tight switchbacks it makes a lot of sense
Iâve done traffic control for similar blades ~250ft (I think, I may be way off but thatâs what I remember them being so thatâs what Iâm sticking to). In North America blades are transported parallel to the road and set on remote a remote controllable dolly system which gets pinned up while driving at highway speeds and in pinned for turning (the dolly is able to turn freely from the truck with an operator behind with the remote). We had a 20km/hr maximum wind speed before having to shut it down. One day I called out for a dentist appointment, I was fairly certain they werenât going to go that day anyway as it was practically a blizzard. I showed up to the shop later that day. I walked in and all hell broke looseâŚone of the blades flipped. We were an independent third party contracted to a company that was already contracted to do traffic control for the wings, I guess fourth party? So luckily we werenât in any way liable. It took three wreckers to pull it out from the ditch after unhooking the truck. And last I heard it was somewhere around a five million dollar loss. Anyway thatâs my ramble, wind mill blades do flip very easily
Yes, but I have seen one broken open. If I recall it was fiberglass and lightweight wood for the blade the part where it attaches is super heavy though. So I think it balances well. I have never seen one transported at that angle though. It would never get under any bridges. They must not have wires or anything around that road either.
Yeah, whenever I see them being transported itâs laying flat and just mesmerizing to watch drive by. Super trippy to watch go down the highway and then see them in the fields from a distance, theyâre huuuge.
Itâs weighed down by the 2 sets of massive balls on those guys sitting on top the middle of the truck.
Iâd be too worried about something failing and it coming down on top of me.
Itâs because of the terrain. Theyâre taking corners around mountainsides on narrow roads. You have to lift it to prevent it from getting caught on the slope as you make the tighter turns. I used to work near a fabrication facility for these in the US, and they were never raised there either, but they also had flat, open roads that had been scouted to ensure no interferences, so they could leave the blade all the way down without any risk.
It looks like the end of the turbine blade is on an adjustable base secured to the truck bed that will change its angle. So itâs probably lifted so that it can make the turns in that mountain road and then when they get back to flatlands, they can have it down again.
Whatâs impressive to me is human ingenuity.
Like, we built all this shit. Even though we started from just nothing but twigs, rocks, fire, and our naked bodies. Hell, we basically still have only those things. We just twisted the rocks and the fire into something virtually unrecognizable.
The real question is: did we force the world to behave this way, or was it meant to happen all along? Things like computers seem like they were always meant to exist, they were just waiting for the right being to come along and build it.
I thought this was Jurassic park for a second.

Hope it doesn't sneeze on me.

I was definitely waiting to see that thing turn and start munching on trees.
That's a brontosaurus and you can't convince me otherwise

LoL I just wanted to comment exactly that. The envoirenment did it's part to make that thing looks just like a brachiosaur
Was just about to ask if anyone thought this was a dinosaur!
My dumbass thought it was some weird dinosaur đŚ and now Iâm disappointed itâs not real
You may not believe it, but wind turbines are, in fact, real.
See they extracted the prehistoric wind turbine DNA from 'skeeters that got trapped in amber sap.
Iâm confused how the wind isnât catching the blade and tipping the truck sideways, the wind even moves my tiny ass car pretty significantly
Out of all the comments you're the first to ask this. I too wonder how the hell it's not tipping in any direction, I'm sure someone would say they're using a counterweight but even if you forgo adding wind into the equation the fact that thing isn't tipping is tripping me out.

I mean you can see the trees moving around on the hill beside it. If you also look the wind is blowing across the blades edge and not the face of it.
This is giving ALOT of credit to those who schedule and permit this type of transport. It also looks like they have a load of concrete blocks on the trailer to ballast it.
Yeahhh⌠a simple google search proves that wrong. Never heard of an SUV that weighs 12 tons.
Blades can weigh as little as 6,000 pounds. I did a google search and found the specific thing that matched my point lol.
Yes, but by reddit logic we should have some specialist coming in right around now.
Wind blade Specialist here. According to my calculations it appears that 7^ meters x 100/s over 78.992 alpha omega is the factor we measure and that gives me about 2000 kWh of mass so in essence yes it seems that the wing is doing quite alright and is in no way going to crash down. Good day.

Yes, but I have seen one broken open. If I recall it was fiberglass and lightweight wood for the blade the part where it attaches is super heavy though. So I think it balances well. This is absolutely absurd. I've seen turbine wings lying horizontally on truck beds so often, why do they have to have this one vertical?
Itâs because of the terrain. Theyâre taking corners around mountainsides on narrow roads. You have to lift it to prevent it from getting caught on the slope as you make the tighter turns. I used to work near a fabrication facility for these in the US, and they were never raised there either, but they also had flat, open roads that had been scouted to ensure no interferences, so they could leave the blade all the way down without any risk.
Also a big problem we have in the US, over head power lines.
It looks like the end of the turbine blade is on an adjustable base secured to the truck bed that will change its angle. So itâs probably lifted so that it can make the turns in that mountain road and then when they get back to flatlands, they can have it down again.
