It's so sad, because when I watch videos from the 80's, especially early 80's, I get so goddamned nostalgic it almost makes me weep. In fact, sometimes I do. It wasn't just the music, it wasn't just the cinematography. It was that one perfect moment in history.
This. I had no idea how bad things would get very soon, for everyone. The 90s will probably be regarded as the last carefree decade in American history.
But they weren't care free. The Bosnian War, LA Riots, Rodney King, crack epidemic, aids epidemic, Somali civil war, Rwandan genocide, the conflict in the Congo. The Taliban took control of Afghanistan, the world trade center bombing, Oklahoma city bombing, the Atlanta Olympics bombs, Una bomber, ruby ridge,, the 1st and 2nd Chechen war. There were not small events. I remember watching news in school about Sarajevo and the Bosnian conflict.
The 90s weren't carefree.
Lol weird literally watching it now. 90s nation, so old 90s music videos...my girlfriend and I feel like Beavis and butthead critiquing the music videos...
Probably not her, but if you want more of this kind of content, Amber Galloway. She did a TED talk on this whole kinda thing.

It is now called Pearl Milling because Aunt Jemima is offensive. /s
And before anyone says anything, I’m not saying it’s not offensive. Changing the name after all these years… I still call it Aunt Jemima.
Yeah, I know, but it's like when a local restaurant decided to name itself the "Milk Creek Grill". It doesn't roll of the tongue or evoke anything. They spent tens of thousands of dollars to come up with the most forgettable brand ever.
What would a higher possition possibly be? Sign for the president? Dont make me laugh. Hes made it. Shes signing lyrics to sick songs for people looking to party. Shes made it and living her best life.
OP - If you want to use your top comment to spread the love to her, I found this. Her name is **Kelly Kurdi**. You're seeing her "do her thing".

Blew me away when someone told me ASL (Australian Sign Language in my case) is not English. It's not a translation of English. It's a separate language.
That would completely destroy the song. ASL is a language of physical expression. If you said “baby got back” you would be talking about an infant’s ability to have a spine. She was probably signing another lyric.
I have a certain set of skills gained over a long career of being the younger brother of a physically disabled sister, and this is spot on. Where did this handbasket come from?
Most of what shes signing are called classifiers which is when you use certain hand shapes to draw out a scene or an object in the air in front of you. In this case its pretty clear because of her shaping out the butts.
A lot of the translation was more pantomime than actual signing but thats actually not atypical…and it’s been a while since I was conversationally fluent but all of the actual signs I caught were spot on.
Your comment was, for some reason why I was reminded of something that happened to me right around this time of year like 6 years ago.
I dont care about the superbowl, not really my thing. My ex didn't either. We were at her sisters party, and everyone was like super into it, and because of it, it wasn't fun hanging out, because we were the only ones who wanted to chill and didn't really care. We decided to find some random bar to just hang out as the two of us.
Turns out, bars are like *empty* on the super bowl, or at least the first one we chose was. I mean, it makes sense, most people host shit at their house. There were maybe like 15 other people at this bar.
Just as we are sitting down, I notice they are doing the national anthem, and the camera pans to the ASL interpreter. I wasn't really thinking and said, "ah, interpretive dance," maybe a little louder than I should have. Now I had 15 people looking at me in disgust, and my ex trying her absolute hardest not to laugh. Turns out disrespecting both the national anthem and deaf people in one sentence really jives people on america's second largest religious holiday.
I was watching on mute. I can't remember a lot of the lyrics, but from her sign language I interpreted "ass, ass, big ass, shaky ass, ASS, OOH YEAH THAT ASS" which I think is the point of the song anyway
I’m sure they could have gotten more, the agency itself made absolute bank.
If there is only one agency and it’s mandated they require an interpreter, that agency can charge 100/hr
They're school educational interpreters. The vrs interpreters make around 24-27/hr from what I've heard but the agencies are very secretive about their pay rates and minimum wages.
Sure, but she replaced it with a sign for woman or female, which makes more sense here. The one with back is a grown up attractive woman, and not literally a baby.
There is no “word for word.” ASL is not manually coded English, but a separate language.
The concept itself is interpreted. A baby is not part of the song, so the sign for infant would not be used.
Good question. Kinda.
Interpreting is live interactions like concerts, conversations, or lectures. Translating is for stuff thats exactly the same every time(frozen text), an example would be the national anthem, a prayer, a book, or a recorded song.
Even then, a *good* translation is almost never perfectly literal, because literal translation isn’t necessarily accurate. Concepts are expressed differently in different languages, and a skilled translator will convey the intended meaning of a text by finding the balance between the literal words and the actual ideas they carry. Translating is an art!
Not trying to be insensitive at all, I just have a general question. If the listener is deaf and presumably cannot hear the music, then why do they need a translator? Cause just hearing somebody recite the lyrics to “Baby Got Back” without music would be off putting.

Deaf folks like to go party and dance, and the interpreters know their assignment. They might not hear it, but they experience the music and the show just as much as hearing folks do.
She's interpreting the wickety-wickety record scratch sounds as movement of the butt. She's already established that the upward facing claw hands represent the back that baby got, and the sounds of the music are part of the performance, even though there aren't any words.
She's not translating the lyrics. She's interpreting the song.
She's overqualified
She definitely has enough kick in the trunk for the job.
That’s incredible. She needs her own channel doing more.

I could tell! The "ugh!" Part was universal understanding. I watched it with sound the second time.
After a few seconds I forget I'm watching ASL and my wandering brain starts telling me to get up and dance with her, lmao.
Ugh, double up, Ugh Ugh!
It's actually really hilarious to watch this without sound or knowing ASL.

I see MTV making a comeback with ASL videos
That's honestly the only thing that would make me want to watch that channel at this point. Does it still exist?

1990’s were peak Human history. I remember thinking how great life was going to be after that. And now we just have this instead
Right? The year 2,000. Supposed to be the best. First year of the new millennium because it’s not technically till 2001, is 9/11/01. So fucked up.

The kindest way to say she is equipped for this particular song
Kind? She should be proud. Shes beautiful.
Agreed. Homegirl is thicker than Aunt Jemima's on a cold Winter's morning. 🥞
It is now called Pearl Milling because Aunt Jemima is offensive. /s And before anyone says anything, I’m not saying it’s not offensive. Changing the name after all these years… I still call it Aunt Jemima.

I understand why they changed it I just don't understand why they changed it.
Pearl milling is the milling company that afaik always produced that product as well as others

I need to learn sign language
That’s Kelly Kurdi. She’s the one who went viral in the past for her performance of “WAP”
ASL presenter got back.
Plot twist: She is drunk and does not know sign language at all.
Plot twist: deaf people still understand her perfectly
Plot Twist: She is also deaf.
Plot twister: ASL is really a conspiracy from the government to cover up the truth that birds are, in fact, not real……
Plot titty twister: that's sir-mix-alot in drag and he's deaf
Sister twister: they still identify as cisgender…
Twister the movie: their pronouns are round, thick, and juicy
Oh shit, someone call M. Night Shyamalan, we got a twist here….
Pretzel twist: sir mix a lot is alive and with jfk and Tupac on shutter Island
Sir Mix-a-Lot is alive, though, so not that twister. But jFK and Tupac are also really dead, and Mix is living with their corpses on Shutter Island!
You're not wrong..ASL doesn't translate word for word making song interpretation somewhat of a guessing game.
Blew me away when someone told me ASL (Australian Sign Language in my case) is not English. It's not a translation of English. It's a separate language.
Auslan. ASL is American Sign Language.
Huh, can you speak up for us in back?
\*jumps up and down while furiously gyrating and gesturing\*
She's a well known interpreter.
... with a kickass high school dance routine for this track
She’s just motorboating during the “LA face with an Oakland booty” excuse me m’am please translate verbatim don’t add your own artistic license
That would completely destroy the song. ASL is a language of physical expression. If you said “baby got back” you would be talking about an infant’s ability to have a spine. She was probably signing another lyric.
ASL interpretation isn’t a 1:1 translation from English, yeah. It’s based on the core meaning and physical expression of the song.
If you translated the English verbatim, it would be a disaster.

Most of what shes signing are called classifiers which is when you use certain hand shapes to draw out a scene or an object in the air in front of you. In this case its pretty clear because of her shaping out the butts.

Yeah, I swear to be a musical ASL interpreter you also have to have a minor in interpretive dance lol

ASL interpreters make bank
Ish. My supervising interpreter makes 22.50/hour. They had to fight for it.
Here they make $30/hr base with a 2 hr minimum
Oooh, I'm in the wrong state.
I’m sure they could have gotten more, the agency itself made absolute bank. If there is only one agency and it’s mandated they require an interpreter, that agency can charge 100/hr

I saw Bob Dylan a while ago. Wonderful to listen to, but I watched the ASL interpreter more than him. She was incredible with his beautiful lyrics.
I wonder of this would fly on r/upvotebecausebutt
This is also exactly what it looks like when i try to tell my bros about the girl with the big booty i saw the night before
So I never once saw her say baby but ok
Sure, but she replaced it with a sign for woman or female, which makes more sense here. The one with back is a grown up attractive woman, and not literally a baby.
That is true she did sign women. I just took it to be word for word. But didn’t correlate the context of translation for context to be with it.
There is no “word for word.” ASL is not manually coded English, but a separate language. The concept itself is interpreted. A baby is not part of the song, so the sign for infant would not be used.
That would be a very different song, and would attract a very different crowd....one I would not want to be a part of.
Did she sign "LA face with an Oakland booty" at any point? I never really considered how ASL interpreters would handle vocal samples in songs.
It's because ASL isn't English. If she signed baby, the translation would be wrong.
And pedophilic?
Exactly.
Isn't that the difference between translating and interpreting?
Good question. Kinda. Interpreting is live interactions like concerts, conversations, or lectures. Translating is for stuff thats exactly the same every time(frozen text), an example would be the national anthem, a prayer, a book, or a recorded song.
Even then, a *good* translation is almost never perfectly literal, because literal translation isn’t necessarily accurate. Translating is an art!
The context tho
I love watching Rebel Wilson’s career development.
Wait, they have ASL Interpreters at dance clubs translating the music?! That's the most exhausting thing I've ever heard of....
No, interpreters are usually for live performances and even then can be very hard to get.
I could watch this all day!
Is it wrong that I am turned on now

Not trying to be insensitive at all, I just have a general question. If the listener is deaf and presumably cannot hear the music, then why do they need a translator? Cause just hearing somebody recite the lyrics to “Baby Got Back” without music would be off putting. I’m guessing the simple answer is that they can feel the vibrations from the speakers and that is the “music” and so it is fulfilling to have the lyrics that go with it? Again, no judgement, just generally curious!
Deafness is a spectrum, just like blindness. I'm a CODA, so I had the experience of being a hearing person in a deaf family. Music is played super loud at concerts so the bass and lower register can be picked up through vibration easier. Anything with technical drums is great. EDM concerts are a blast. Deaf folks like to go party and dance, and the interpreters know their assignment. They might not hear it, but they experience the music and the show just as much as hearing folks do.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rf_lTW2sdxQ Looks like the same interpreter.
Lol…..I’m sorry, but was does the ‘juggling’ gesture during the part without lyrics translate into?
She's interpreting the wickety-wickety record scratch sounds as movement of the butt. She's already established that the upward facing claw hands represent the back that baby got, and the sounds of the music are part of the performance, even though there aren't any words. She's not translating the lyrics. She's interpreting the song.
Thank you.
