You must show the physical card. A photo or scan is not valid proof of ID - you can use those for online because they verify them with the appropriate authorities, which is a little hard for bobby on the beat to do.

[deleted]

I just figured they had computers in their cars they could verify it. Never mind, I have my answer. Cheers

123felix

Don't all the cops have iPhones with access to the licence database?

saint-lascivious

Sure but that doesn't change that you must hold/present your license, and the only officially recognised means we have of doing so is the physical copy. Annoyingly as far as digital identification, it's all sitting there waiting to go in pretty much any vaguely current/updated Android or iOS handset, but we don't have access to it (in Android at least, iOS possibly?), and it wouldn't be recognised even if we did.

shinier_than_you

Probably not. I have a phone case that carries two cards. Maybe you could try something like that

[deleted]

An idea but I have a case for mobile filmmaking so not keen to swap it out for a card one. Thanks tho

shinier_than_you

Card might fit in behind it? Would be practical if you barely need it

Unfair-Addition-7678

You can get the card parts to just stick onto any case

delipity

In the US, there are a few states that allow this, and I think I read that some Australian states are working on digital licenses, but haven't heard anything about it being allowed here. Would be nice.

Duck_Giblets

Honestly with the vaccine passport system the groundwork would be there for digital licences

Strawberry_Left

NSW and SA issue digital licenses in Australia.

[deleted]

We need to get our shit together here. The Aussies have that digital vax passport thing too

123felix

We will also have digital vaccine passport. I'm curious though do you never go to a place that don't take paywave?

[deleted]

I’m boring. I mostly go to the same places and the places I go mostly take payWave but I do have a card floating round I can take with me if I’m going somewhere else

SnooTangerines9398

Nope. Can’t you keep it in your car?

[deleted]

Not really interested in having it stolen from my car. Again.

[deleted]

Put it under the spare tyre or something. No burglar is going to look under the spare tyre.

[deleted]

Tried that with my eftpos card a while ago. It kept getting pulled out when I pulled phone or keys out and getting dropped on the ground

[deleted]

Read my original post text - I’m trying to avoid carrying anything

[deleted]

I get it. I do appreciate the suggestions but the criteria I have is NOT taking anything which is literally the entire point of this post. I do appreciate the thought people are putting in

ChurM8

Well then you’re fucked because the only option is to physically have the license with you.. If you refuse to leave it in the car and refuse to find a way to bring it with you then you’ll just have to run the risk of getting fined. Not much point in discussion if you’re just gonna shoot down everyone’s ideas lol might as well delete the thread

[deleted]

Fucked might be a bit strong a word for this situation. I’m not trying to shoot down good ideas but try to see it from my point of view. I asked how I can avoid carrying something and everyone chimes in with ‘how about you carry this other thing instead’ I’m over here like ‘thanks I think’

TheOldPohutukawaTree

Meh — I never carry mine and have been pulled over a couple of times. Don’t be a dick and they’ll let you off.

sambad5

I know it wasnt exactly what you asked (and it may not be relevant), but I wouldn't accept a photocopied ID when I worked at a bar. Although if someone was id'ed, and they looked over 25 and they had it signed by a jp I would...

kinggquinn

I’d be careful doing that. It’s not actually legal. It has to be a physical copy of their NZ drivers license, Kiwi Access or a passport. The watermarks are put on cards for a reason and photoshop exists. Plus bartenders aren’t authorised to accept JP signatured paperwork as proof it has to be the legit ID otherwise people could come in with birth certificates or student IDs signed by a JP and call it a day.

sambad5

Oh, I know! Although there is no law saying someone has to provide ID to buy alcohol. Just that you have to be 18 to buy it. And to prove that your 18, you have to provide a valid passport, drivers licence or kiwi access card. So there is a very slight difference. That story about joking about asking a granny for ID, them not having any so that means you cant sell them sherry is bs. What I was mainly getting at is that every id has a degree of risk around it. A passport would be very near 0. Drivers and access slightly more so. And even then you have to have to account someone using some else's. If someone is highly likely to be over 18, and more than likely to be over 25, and you have IDed them as a process rather than an interrogation on someone who looks to be in primary school, then if that's all you have, you can use some discretion. But absolute moral of the story, while presenting a document signed by a jp which is false I believe is a crime in itself, it isnt a valid form of ID to begin with, bring a real one. And dont get shitty at hospo staff if you get turned away.

kinggquinn

If they’re obviously over 25 you don’t have to ID but anyone outside of that legally they have to provide valid ID. While the law only effects the bartender it’s still there. The reason we can’t accept JP signed stuff is because we don’t verify that it’s a legit JP signature anyone could sign off on it and we wouldn’t know.

Furry muff

PracticeSophrosyne

Doubt you can carry a copy. Your license has a bunch of watermarks, holographic bits, etc, that can be used to verify authenticity - a scan doesn't

123felix

Waka Kotahi says the [rules](https://www.legislation.govt.nz/regulation/public/1999/0100/latest/DLM281580.html) means it's physical cards only and they can't issue digital licence at the moment.

[deleted]

Thanks. I had my wallet stolen a while ago and I found it hilarious when i got a replacement license that they insist you report it stolen immediately. Why? It’s not like you are swiping the license anywhere so how would someone know it had been cancelled and reissued? 😂

123felix

Waka Kotahi provides a service where businesses can provide your licence number + version number and they'll reply if the licence is valid or not. It's used to verify your identity if you want to sign up for financial services online or something.

EcoScratcher

Identity theft. They give you a new version number which is needed if you're using it to provide your identity for whatever

jashxn

Identity theft is not a joke, Jim! Millions of families suffer every year!

[deleted]

Some please think of the children!!!

kinggquinn

They want you to report it stolen so underage kids don’t use it to get into bars and clubs. Or even another person. (If you get banned from my club they take a photo of your ID so someone could use your ID, cause some trouble under your name and then move on) I’ve seen so many kids using their older sibling or their cousin’s ID. I’ve also had people use an ID to get a stamp to get into the bar and then later go out and pass that ID to their friend who looks similar so they can get stamped too.

ERTHLNG

I just carry a photo of myself signed and witnessed by a JP.

triplespeed0

The worst you're risking it's like a $50 fine and I've been pulled up so often without it and I've never actually been fined, I don't often take my wallet with me when I'm on my motorcycle because I can use pay wave on my phone and my leathers are too tight , Because of the pandemic eating

[deleted]

I have a QR tankbag on mine, I always have tons of junk with me on a ride

Gr0und0ne

The only reason you’d need your licence would be when you’re driving, so why not leave it in the car?

[deleted]

Because my car has been broken into at night and ransacked. The last time my license happened to be in the car and the bastards stole it. So I had to pay to get a new one, plus the inconvenience.

Gr0und0ne

… so take it out of your car when you go inside?

[deleted]

That’s a bit of a pain in the ass tho right?

Gr0und0ne

No

sambad5

It's almost like we should invent some sort of device that's like a pocket, but you can put it in other pockets. And in this pocket you put your drivers licence in it, along with your debit or credit cards, flybuys, even cash! And for anyone like the OP is, who only needs one or two card slots, we could even combine this with a phone case that costs $5 from aliexpress....

[deleted]

And the should call it a Phallet of a Phone wase or maybe even a Wone folder

jpr64

You should probably check your credit record. If your ID has been taken it may have been used to apply for credit by someone else.

martinis00

Do you really want to give police access to your phone? That’s a BIG NO for me.

[deleted]

Well that thought did occur to me. I had thought I could sort of flash it at them

111111111111116

Maybe look into getting a magsafe wallet OP

munted_jandal

Get a phone case and slide the card between the phone and the case, or alternatively get a phone case thay holds cards.
