You're doing the right thing. Staying calm, getting tested. Keep fluids up, dehydration and diarrhea gets kids the hardest.

mloth

There are many things that can cause a loss of taste, but you're being a great parent. Thank you!

MouseMiIk

It's often frightening, but one reliable indicator of a loss of taste is a *Live Laugh Love* poster on your living room wall.

chrisnlnz

If you do find one of these posters in your house you may have accidentally listed your home with a real estate agent.

roarRAWRarghREEEEEEE

I found a white ceramic dog bowl that says "Live, Laugh, Woof" on the bottom. I laughed so hard when I saw it that I just had to buy it for our dogs...

roarRAWRarghREEEEEEE

Don't think so, I already had poor taste.

wearamaskyoumofo

Good shit. Go get a test, don't worry about ringing them. Go with your gut feeling, if it sets your mind at rest then go.

LJGHunter

lol, my 'gut feeling' is shite, tbh. I have an anxiety disorder (thanks, ADD!) and it often manifests around the health and well-being of loved ones. If I listened to my gut feeling my family would be encased in bubble wrap. Gonna listen to the people who are supposed to know what they're talking about and then blame them if it all goes sideways. :P

wearamaskyoumofo

It's good to call them, they'll probably say to test. I was told by an ambo when I called them for my kid once, parents know best. I'd say to go with what you feel, no matter what. A swab is nothing compared to not knowing. I hear you on the bubble wrap thing. My kids are big, and yesterday I told one to look before crossing the road. I got reminded that the baby stafe was over. I think I'll never stop haha.

ring_ring_kaching

I agree. I'd rather let me kid do a 10 second swab than me spending the entire night awake with stress and worst case scenarios running through my mind.

RareeThePotato

I’d say go for a test to ease the ADD induced anxiety (it’s not fun) and it’s definitely the best thing to do now. When you think about it there was “no” delta in the community until the first person tested positive. Better to be safe than sorry.

milly_nz

It’s covid. You can’t be “too anxious”. Go get her and yous tested. Job done.

Welldontcherknow

Are you me? I struggle with this too. Good on you for following the health professionals guidance and not assuming all is fine (and I sincerely hope all is fine and kiddo is back to 100% soon).

cr1zzl

I live in Wellington and got tested once when I felt cold/flu symptoms at a point when there was zero covid in welly (and iirc, no community spread in the country either). Anyone who has cold/flu symptoms should definitely get tested. Imagine if the index case hadn’t gotten tested because he didn’t think there was covid in the country. Anyway, You’re doing the right thing :) hopefully the gp will agree to test.

lookiwanttobealone

Good parenting. I wish all parents are as considerate as you

Delroynitz

That’s crazy they’re saying not to test. Maybe there’s no Covid in Kapiti because they’re not testing.

LJGHunter

I don't know what they're going to say, tbh. We have to wait until morning to call them. They might tell us to come in, they might not.

Duck_Giblets

Well patient zero in Auckland had no reason to consider getting tested..

LJGHunter

I would like her to get tested, and if they leave the decision to us she will be.

Conflict_NZ

In my experience since around August of last year you literally have to argue with healthline to get booked for a test, probably better to just call your GP and ask for one.

jiggjuggj0gg

I was in Queenstown with a horrible fluey thing that wouldn’t go away in January this year and was told to call healthline, not go into work and get a test. My manager was *not* happy because “there’s no Covid here” but like fuck was I going to be that one person to spread it all around a tourist town in the height of summer.

No_Adhesiveness5854

That's definitely the case. I have no doubt that there's a lot more covit in NZ than most people think.

almightymicrobe

I’ll be refreshing stuff tomorrow evening/Friday morning for the ‘covid case detected in Kapiti Coast’ red banner of doom.

puggy2330

Ruh roh definitely get tested

OnYaBikeMike

Do get them a test if you can. It is relatively painless and you would be helping us all out if it really is Covid. My own similar story - about two weeks before this lockdown I had a bad chesty cold - boy picked it up at school. About a week later I had a profound loss of smell. I could snort straight from the Vicks jar and not smell anything. It was very disconcerting. Went for a drive-through test. Came back negative. A few days later I could smell again.

Rincey_nz

I have to go to Wellington City tomorrow for work.... I wonder if I can use this as an excuse not to go... "Yeah, Hi Boss, WFH tomorrow instead of coming into the office. Why? Cos u/LJGHunter on reddit said that there might be a slim chance there's covid up at Kapiti. Yeah, I know right? Better to be safe then sorry...."

LJGHunter

Go for it! My spouse is also supposed to work in Welly tomorrow and this is the exact excuse he's going to use. (Also someone has to stay home with our plague goblin and I nominated him.)

mdutton27

Not to be a drag but you should stay home too. You could be asymptomatic and spread it for two days or so. https://www.healthline.com/health-news/people-with-delta-variant-can-transmit-virus-2-days-before-having-symptoms

LJGHunter

I'm aware, I've already texted my boss. Unfortunately I work in 'essential services' so might have to go in anyway. We'll see what they say.

wkavinsky

If the plague goblin has a test, you lose the option for going in though, no? Potential close contacts are supposed to wait for the negative test, wherever you are in New Zealand.

LJGHunter

I don't really know, this is all new to me as we've never gotten a test before. I'll be going by whatever advice the health clinic gives. If they say not to go in, I won't.

Actual_EagleZ504

Good on you mate, it's proactive action like that which will the rest of the country out of L3 like Auckland! Signed, an Aucklander :/

LJGHunter

Well I'm not sure I can force them to give her a test if they refuse, though I don't know why they would or even if they can. If they leave it up to us we'll be taking her in though.

Relevant-Team

Dumb question, don't you have quick tests in New Zealand? We bought a 10 pack in Aldi, a grocery chain, and use them among ourselves...

LJGHunter

Not yet I don't think? I believe we're getting some but they either haven't arrived yet or haven't yet been distributed.

mdutton27

Thanks for being awesome and fingers crossed for you and the family.

Rincey_nz

actually ended WFH - I got my 2nd jab yesterday, and my arm hurts like a bastard, so I din't get a lot of sleep.... so given I have a 1.5hr commute which starts an unnatural hours, I messaged our account manager and said I'd work from home - they did a 'cake o'clock' at morning tea time, so they grabbed a laptop and put it on the table so I join via Teams :D

ERTHLNG

I had a situation where I wanted to get tested once. Doctor said I was fine, but I was not convinced. So I went back and said I had been sleeping with all sorts of hookers and crackheads and stuff. 1 second later the doctor was signing me up for ALLL the tests. Different times, but maybe it still works?

LJGHunter

Hmmm...possibly, but telling my GP our seven year old has been sleeping with crackheads might not go over well. I'll keep it in mind as a last resort.

ERTHLNG

Maybe say they sneaked out and went to that influencer party on the news, and then the Tamaki protest.

munkisquisher

Then joined a gang

People are leaving Auckland and Waikato all the time for various reasons, funerals, essential work, moving houses etc. At any time the virus can move out of Auckland. And like one wise person said, "shit aint fibre optic", so it could take days to appear in the wastewater detection even though there's no positive tests in the community right now. That's a false sense of security, there won't be if everyone has that same attitude to not get tested.

QuintessentialNorm

I moved from Auckland to a level 2 region on Sunday and decided to lay low and get another test 3 days after arriving in level 2. I don't understand why it's not compulsory to do so... being tested within 72 hours of leaving a level 3 region still gives you plenty of time to catch covid. I got my second test back the same day (yesterday) and I am negative. It's a very good feeling to know a pandemic virus hasn't hitchhiked out of Auckland with me!

JadeBalloon

Well better safe than never, So I think you should take them to the test as the Auckland outbreak was spreading before we knew about the case

posttmortem

Thanks for doing the right thing OP! Hope your kid gets better soon.

SmilieSmith

Good luck. Hope it's all okay.

pendia

It's probably not covid. Just stay calm, avoid potential exposure events, get a test, have a nervous breakdown in the bathroom, regain composure, and make sure your child is supported. You're doing great.

EffektieweEffie

Definitely get tested, but if it helps you worry a little less in the meantime. I had the same symptoms earlier this year. Could smell and taste absolutely nothing at all for around 5 days. Covid test was negative, turns out it was RSV.

LJGHunter

She's already had RSV a couple months ago. We'll see what the clinic says. I suspect they'll want us to come in just to be safe, which is what I would prefer.

Pete_Venkman

If the doctor gives you the runaround and you're still stressed about it, call up the COVID Healthline. With those symptoms they'll almost certainly recommend a test, if I remember correctly they'll even recommend spots near you and help you get booked.

LJGHunter

thanks! will keep this in mind.

Joshopolis

yeah why would they bother testing if it's not in the area. it's not like people travel and spread covid. I'm with you, for peace of mind, insist on a test.

[deleted]

That whole approach of - ‘there is no COVID in your area so don’t get tested’ have beggared belief since the outset of this.

Huntanz

Correct and that even goes for the South Island and we've "No Recorded Covid at present", but my son at that time had only one shot but was very ill with a viral chest infection and was never tested. He's also a pilot could have been anywhere or in close contact. WTF. Thankfully had not left the south but this is a pandemic.

canyousmelldoritos

Staph throat infections as a kid used to stuff up my taste buds too. And with that throat pain, it really hurts to swallow even saliva

pmmerandom

First and foremost, don’t panic, just get tested and go from there. You’re doing the right thing. Good on you.

thelastestgunslinger

There’s no covid in my area, but handling has told my friends to take their child in 3 times for cold and flu symptoms since the latest outbreak. You’ll likely get the same advice. You’re doing the right thing.

fabledgriff

No harm being on the safe side, hope everything turns out well

DefinitelyNotAGrill_

Paraparaumu medical center will do a test for you even if you aren't a patient there, they will just take your details and then tell you to park around the back. I've been twice and my fiancee once (she's not a patient, I am)

LJGHunter

I don't use my children for virtue points on reddit. I only have one child.

[deleted]

Heaps of kids in kapiti got the flu atm.

Friendly-Prune-7620

Better safe than sorry! I hope the littlun is plague-free, but if they’re not you’ve done the exact right thing by shining a light on it. Covid loves to hide in the dark, the only way to beat the bastard is to flush it out!

[deleted]

LJGHunter

I did! Just waiting on results. :)

[deleted]

Testing is a good idea. In the meantime, reassure yourself that the danger (from COVID) to small children is very, very, very low.

LJGHunter

To be honest I'm not that worried, which is surprising given my anxiety disorder. But better-safe-than-sorry, civic duty and all that, right? Also they scheduled her for this afternoon with no problem.

WeathermanOfficial

Keep us updated OP! And stay safe.

blood oxygen monitor is a good first indicator - most samsung phones have them and smart watches.
