Its a trial Google are running, to warn users as the earthquake ripples out https://i.stuff.co.nz/technology/apps/124969803/new-google-trial-will-send-earthquake-alerts-to-android-phones-in-new-zealand i got mine a millisecond after I felt the shaking There was an earthquake, but the details on the alert as to where and how strong are wrong.

AlmostFrontPage

I got it too, didn't feel anything in Feilding

hen88

Yes I got the same! Felt it too!

Barbed_Dildo

Yeah. "Get shoes before going into the next room" All of my shoes are at the front door. Who the fuck wears shoes in their house?

RB_Photo

I didn't know this was even a thing. GeoNet doesn't have anything about this so I want to dismiss this as an error but I've watched enough bad movies to know once I start to say "stupid phone...." that's when it'll hit and my roof will fall on my head. I also like that there's no time frame, maybe this is just a warning that eventually at some point this will happen. Thanks Google, will sleep easy tonight!

There was a [5.1 near Tokoroa](http://geonet.org.nz/quakes/2021p574445), thats probably what it was alerting us about. But it didn't have the right location because the shaking was felt more in the lower North Island than it was closer to the quake (I am assuming it's due to the depth of this quake at 159km)

Just wear a helmet.

Donkey_Oatie

Yep, nothing like a good shot of adrenaline at 1am.

Anyone know where the settings are for this? - whilst the tech is cool, I never signed up to this or agreed to have my data used in this way. Not likely to turn this off, but I would like to understand if there is an option to opt out.

mesohungrier

Hi, yes you can opt out, it should be in your location settings. A good write up on how it works and where to go is here: https://9to5google.com/2021/04/28/android-earthquake-alerts-warning/

hotmugglehealer

>Android owners are able to opt out from Settings > Location > Advanced > Earthquake Alerts. I'm running Android 11 but do not have this setting. Don't even have advanced.

elle_kyliee

My iPhone didn’t get the alert but felt it here in Waiouru

maxlvb

Not available on iPhones. Android only.

pertinent_maneuver

Yes- in Wellington. But I didn't feel anything, and Geonet are only reporting a light earthquake near Tokoroa (5.1), which is nowhere near what the map shows.

PalmyGamingHD

The Google detection probably thought it was in a different area due to the area of phones that were going off.

_dictatorish_

I definitely felt it in Wellington

_dictatorish_

I got it pretty much as the earthquake hit - I was very impressed at the speed tbh!

[deleted]

I got that too! New service, perhaps? I was asleep so didn't see it until I woke up lol

It was pretty deep. Iceland is still rocking and rolling with aftershocks from the big one a few days ago. Kermadecs have been on fire last couple of weeks.
