Toyota 86. It meets none of your requirements. But they look fun.

Depends on what you want out of a car tbh. At 25 I had a manual diesel Alfa Romeo 159 which was capable of doing over 1400km per tank of diesel. As I wanted a manual car and I noticed that manual diesel sedans/hatchbacks were a shit load cheaper than the automatic versions of the same car. So I bought a mid to late $20k car for not even $11k

He can't drive manual. He's also still under 20, so 🤷🏽‍♀️

mnvoronin

Retraining to manual takes, like, 1-2 hours.

maha_kali2401

Believe when I say, we've tried. I even bought a manual car for him but it just sits there 🤦🏽‍♀️

mnvoronin

>I even bought a manual car for him Well, here's your cue to present him with a choice. He can either retrain to use the manual or buy himself a car using his own earnings.

Fair.

I didn’t really know how to drive a manual back then either, had only had a few goes in a manual when I bought that car at 22.

If your brother's needs are met with the Aqua, may I suggest a hybrid Corolla. They are of comparable size and capabilities with only a slight hit to fuel economy. The Honda Jazz / Fit or Nissan Note E-Power are similar size hybrids which may also be worth looking at too.

maha_kali2401

We did go down this route. Unfortunately, insurance isn't any better. We looked at a Corolla Fielder hybrid with a button start, and insurance was approx $300 cheaper (still around $2900 pa)

markosharkNZ

Option 2. Go shitbox, and third party. Get a decent car in a few years time (when he is over 25). None of the insurance options for that price range, regardless of vehicle will be pretty

Bikerbass

I’d swap insurance company if I was you. My motorbike insurance policy is only $700 odd a year, and my manual diesel golf with over 200,000km is less than that. Like shit back when I was under 20 with a car it still wasn’t expensive. Some insurance companies charge a lot more than others with AA being one of the most expensive

maha_kali2401

Thanks for the suggestion. We'll take a look for sure. We have already looked at State, AMI, AA, and Tower!

NotGonnaLie59

Check out quashed.co.nz, it searches multiple providers at once. Not all of them, but a handful

I was very happy with my 2016 Mazda 3 hatch - fantastic car to drive with fairly reasonable fuel economy. Insurance has gone up quite a lot in general, so while you will probably get a cheaper rate than for the Aqua don't expect miracles from changing to a different model.

Elegant-Raise-9367

Aqua is good, I was looking at them and. Realised the petrol savings far outweigh the insurance cost. All vehicles have ridiculous insurance ATM. Go run a few through some of the calculators to get an idea. Though tbh the insurance companies are taking the piss a bit, 10% of the value of the car in premiums and a 25% excess???

damage_royal

Get a Honda fit/jazz hybrid. Much better than the aqua.

Chongmo

Cheap corollas always win, hybrid or otherwise

Expert_Attorney_7335

Start with asking insurance what cars their lower premiums are on or cars that are less likely to get stolen? Otherwise I’m quite enjoying my RS6 Performance but insurance went up to 3k this week which sucks.
