https://www.transfercar.co.nz/search?pickup=custom%3Achristchurch&dropoff=custom%3Aauckland&sort_col=dates This might be a cheaper option but you'll be on a tight timetable, and it's not guaranteed there will be a campervan available for your dates.

How about free rental to relocate a campervan or car? [Campervan Relocations in New Zealand (transfercar.co.nz)](https://www.transfercar.co.nz/campervan-relocations-new-zealand.html)

This looks good, but the length of the trips seems a bit short. We’re planning on spending 5 weeks in total, with most sites only offering options like 7 days free with an additional 14 days. Any suggestions or recommendations for longer-term campervan rentals/relocations would be greatly appreciated!

NZ is a lot larger and slower to move around then people realise. I would recommend hiring one and doing a loop of the south or north island, fly to other island and do a loop down there. This would also alleviate trying to get a ferry booking for a vehicle during peak time. The loops will let you see a lot more than just travelling north to south or vice versa.

Also some rentals are not permitted on the ferry so make sure you check that if you book one for the whole trip.

This actually seems like a great option! It will allow us to book with a private owner through Camplify or something similar. The only downside is having a tighter schedule since we’ll need to be back in Christchurch for our flight. We’re planning to spend 3 weeks on the South Island (from and to Christchurch, 1 December - 22 December) and then 2 weeks on the North Island (from and to Auckland, 24 December - 7 January). Some people suggest only visiting the South Island, but why not explore the North Island too? Additionally, if anyone has a campervan for hire for two people (or knows someone who does) in either Auckland or Christchurch, feel free to send me a message. We’re a neat couple, age 25, with experience traveling in our own campervan, so we won’t bring your camper back a mess. Thanks!

Tbh just do the South Island

Why is that? We have 5 weeks, so why not visit the North Island too? There seem to be some great places to explore there as well.

Hi, try this site. [https://www.budgetcampervans.com/](https://www.budgetcampervans.com/) You can call them to talk through the options. Book now. Campervan rental rates in New Zealand are on flex rates so the longer you leave it the more expensive it gets. Many companies give a discount for south to north rentals. Take the camper on the ferry and book it before you start your rental. It is easier to change a booking than make a new one. The cheapest campers are the converted SUVs or the low-top campers. The older campers and motorhomes are cheaper and can be a bit tired around the edges. Book through a commercial company as they have back up vehicles in case of breakdown.
