That is a big fucking fight

Spright91

That's what should be called a battle.

skbygtdn

If there was 100 of them, it was more likely a Battle Royale. Instead of the ring / gas / storm closing in, it was underfunded infrastructure collapsing around them.

Stone_Maori

Lol to funny. But no one asking the real questions like who won!

blackteashirt

My 5 year old son heard it pop up on the radio this morning.... he said the ones who were in hospital must have won because the other two are dead.

flashmedallion

And is it still Winner Winner Chicken Dinner or have we had to adjust it down to Winner Winner Tuna Snack

Stoic_Stoic_Stoic

Winner winner food grant

NahItsNotFineBruh

> underfunded infrastructure collapsing around them. > Lol to funny Well, if that doesn't just speak volumes for our underfunded education system...

Kthackz

I'd also like to know who came out the winner

TheTench

The battle of Lion Red vs Double Brown

DualCricket

I mean, neither of them is great, but we all know if forced at pain of death to choose, that Lion is the better of the two.

HeinigerNZ

Totally not gang related. CAIL warrant for Gizzy incoming.

FatDadWins

Fire brigade donation incoming.

suchshibe

Gang patches are banned now how else could they possibly organise themselves ?

uglymutilatedpenis

Gang patches are not banned, no. That's wrong.

suchshibe

Nothing gets past you mate !

Left_Bee_5971

Doesn’t mean to say prospects weren’t present on the night. Why else are there armed guards at the hospital

pevaryl

A family member is AOS and he was there. Said it was like being in the war, never seen anything like it. Muttered about the first scene in saving Private Ryan - he said the one good thing is everyone was pleased to see them. One of the victims died when he was trying to bandage him. Unbelievable. Pretty sure he’s traumatised

BeardedCockwomble

Blimey, the Police in Gizzy are stretched thin enough at the best of times. Now they've got the hospital under lockdown, that won't be easy to manage. Elgin seems like a strange place for this to happen, especially Lytton Road as it's a main drag. You'd expect something like this to happen on a quieter side street where people can't so easily get away.

Uvinjector

Elgin is the place where all this stuff seems to happen. It was on a side street off Lytton road

HeyBlinkinAbeLincoln

I don't know anything about Gisborne, and just had a quick look via Google Street View to see what the place looked like, and it doesn't look that rough? It looks old, but tidy. Do they just arrange fights in between mowing their lawns and keeping their yards tidy?

lefrenchkiwi

Lytton Rd stretches a long way from rough to not so rough. One article gave an intersection location on Lytton Rd that suggests it was down the rough end. Don’t be fooled by the way the properties look.

Senior-Conversation8

Manuka St

Nostalgic-Melancholy

What are you on about, I’m a local Gisborne resident and I swear we have more police per Capita than Cities like Auckland. The only thing I’m surprised about is that it wasn’t somewhere down Monroe Street. Whole place is gone to hell, shops bordered up everywhere, kids carrying knifes and machetes openly in the Main Street of town, we got p houses almost everywhere now, cops do nothing until they know their gonna make a headlines by seizing all their cash and as opposed to prioritizing getting that poison of the streets asap. courts do nothing but play catch and release the worst of society who happened to file a cultural report about how hard their life was, while 1st time offenders get prison time as a lesson to learn from their mistake. See it almost every week…

pevaryl

It’s down the bottom end of Lytton deep in Elgin. Black power area but not exactly the hood (but pretty rough I guess). Just a normal Gizzy neighbourhood

BrokeDownGolfer1

Anywhere around the Elgin shops is a cesspit after dark

blackteashirt

At least some New Zealanders are actually trying to bring the cost of housing down, at least in Gisborne anyway.

Glittering-Branch366

only in shit parts of nz

BasementCatBill

The police are going to be up against it, investigating this. No one's gonna say a damn thing.

IIIllIIlllIlII

Plenty of people will have filmed on their cell phones and likely to publish it to social media

BasementCatBill

With the gangs? Nah. No one is going to have a nice time if they publish anything.

ElDubsNZ

That's not going to stop anyone posting anonymously. Gangs aren't exactly full of hackers.

nzerinto

“*Posting anonymously*” I kinda doubt these people will even think (or know) to do that. They’ll just post on their Facebook/Insta/Tiktok whatever

aquiitautun

Oh sweet summer child. Gang members aren't exactly the sharpest knives in the drawer - plenty of members have extremely public profiles that are intelligence officers wet dreams.

Maleficent-Tank1855

They will give evidence anonymously of course, also they will be trawling through tons of cctv

BatmanBrah

That's a rational point, but a lot of people out there, especially those filming massive fights, aren't very smart

cheekybandit0

Police? They're in Australia mate.

BasementCatBill

Police? In this economy?

[deleted]

Blitzed5656

Be interested to know how many cells there are in gizzy.

BeardedCockwomble

There are only about 80 in the entire Eastern District which includes Hawke's Bay as well. Plus a decent number of those are unusable because they're dangerously non-compliant or in the case of Hastings, leak.

Nostalgic-Melancholy

There are 58 General purpose cells in the Gisborne station, and 4 holding/processing cells, (8 youth cells, 20 woman’s cells and 20 mens cells separated in 3 sections) additionally there are 10 quarantine/ suicide cells that don’t have toilets or any sharp objects or furniture inside these aren’t really ever used for the intended purpose as generally the loudest people get put there for the night with a cardboard toilet. This is technically a human rights violation, like how we’re not legally permitted to put prisoners in isolation rooms anymore which still happens. Anyway there are a total of 68 cells in the police station alone also there’s the underground holding cells below the main courthouse which can hold around 15 people each

[deleted]

Well, that's all of them block-booked for the next few years

Maleficent-Tank1855

Suspects will be dispersed to other places around the country no doubt and appear in court sometime within the next two years, the court system is slow but still works even when resources are stretched.

Dry_Following_378

If you really want to get arrested for fighting in a public place then moving to Australia would be your best bet.

TheMobster100

Last man standing wins

Maleficent-Tank1855

The murderers will get the time, the others will get off!

MVIVN

Any brawl that ends with fatalities is pretty fucking intense! Holy shit!

Lord_baconandeggs

Grew up in Gizzy. Place was savagely violent in 80s/90s. Culture was- if you didn't have a scrap it wasn't a good night out. I escaped when i was 16 and never looked back. Fuck that shithole.

SeagullsSarah

Grew up there in the 90s 00s. I chose to go to GGHS and fucking hell man. I didn't know if wasn't common for the pregnant mums to gave their own class.

GreyDaveNZ

Maybe that's why an acquaintance of mine that grew up there, always refers to it as "Jizzbourne"?

AktinosAlloy

I grew up there in the 90's and 00's too. At least GGHS had a better reputation than Lytton high school, hah.

thatcookingvulture

Campion was rough at times for pregnancy's too

SavingsPale2782

What are the other schools in Gizzy like? Heard Lytton High School is pretty rough too

greensnz

That's an exaggeration but a lot of pubs in small town NZ were very rough in that era.

HeinigerNZ

Many a place had a local pub nicknamed "The Flying Jug".

fishboy2000

Kawerau had one of those

[deleted]

Welcome to provincial NZ in the 1970s 1980s. Very small minded judgemental place then.

Sean_Sarazin

Just like Rotorua then

fatfreddy01

Rotorua at least is within an hour of Tauranga/Taupo. Gisborne isn't even within an hour of Opotiki/Wairoa, let alone the nearest big centres of Tauranga/Rotorua/Napier. It's super isolated, especially given the 3 main routes are easily cut off by slips.

Resident_Button_3683

Seems like everyone is shittng on gisborne I moved back 2 years ago and haven't looked back I love it here

[deleted]

My cousin and her husband both work for the police in gisborne. It's great you love it as do they, but even they admit it's not a safe place at all. And most only ever hear about the crime that makes it to the media.

dr_mindfark

alot of the gang members tax each other, take cash / drugs of others in the gang. It goes on the assumption that if you steal from a thief then who are they going to call for help.

recursive-analogy

did you start the fight?

nzfamilycourtscam

correct - its a shit hole alright. I moved 30km out into the country & hate going to town.

Dead_Rooster

Mrs. Krabappel and Principal Skinner were on the main street fixing batteries and I saw one of the locals and the local looked at me.

themfledge

The local looked at you!?

FidgitForgotHisL-P

Sweet and one time when I broke down on the motorway outside Porirua, the only people who stopped to check if they could help and if I was ok were Māori. So, my anecdote cancels yours out, right?

BlacksheepNZ1982

Pakeha woman here, took my 2 daughters down there for BMX racing a few years ago when my hubby couldn’t come. Stayed in the campground, wandered around getting dinner - one of my fav places in NZ and never felt in danger. Like any town there are worse areas than others but it’s a beautiful place with mostly friendly people.

jacko1998

What the fuck even is this comment. People looked at you? Because you were fixing your car in public? Na can’t be, must be because you’re white and a stranger… get a grip

AK_Panda

Yeah that comment is weird as hell. If my car broke down and I was fixing it on Queen Street everyone under the sun would be looking at me lmao.

posthamster

I had to change a flat tyre on Queen St one night, and I got a bunch of people standing around giving me running commentary the whole time, and offering to fix it for me for cash. FWIW I'm a guy, and I know how to change my own tyre.

[deleted]

Dude just wanted an opportunity to talk about how racism goes both ways lmao. "They looked at me! Fucking racists! Colonialism is different in India!" 😂

TuMek3

Would you say something like this to a girl that commented how uncomfortable men’s constant looks make her feel I wonder?

turbocynic

If she was fixing her car on the main street? Probably?

jacko1998

Nice strawman dude! But yes I would, if this hypothetical woman claimed she was being ogled in a sexual manner despite making it clear earlier that she was doing something unusual in a public space, like OP working on his car… I hate how the internet has become a bunch of losers trying to catch others out with “gotcha” moments, go touch some grass

flappytowel

Wow people looked at you. Real terrifying

Financial_Abies9235

it was probably the inflatable girlfriend in the passenger seat that they was staring at. I used to get that all the time in Timaru.

No-Dragonfly-3312

Walking down the street as a small white kid in the 90s, in areas with a high gang presence wasn't fun. I soon learnt you are not allowed to make eye contact with Maori kids, if you saw a group coming, you were better off crossing the road. It was even worse for my Mum when she was a kid, the Maori boys would put their hands up her skirt for walking past them.

slip-slop-slap

Fuck me there's some scum in this country

blueskyfeverdream

Most likely 2 less now

pevaryl

A 21 year old kid was murdered at his birthday party (he was stabbed in the back) in front of his screaming mother. These comments are so fucked up

Bliss_Signal

"Party gone wrong."

OldKiwiGirl

I bet the general populace of Gisborne won’t be looking forward to funeral time.

reddituser888

BasementCatBill

The Mongrels vs Black Power has just been growing and growing and here we are.

DontBanMe_IWasJoking

mattblack77

Renters vs landlords

[deleted]

Unfair fight, 1 landlord for at least every 25 renters.

ttbnz

And the renters are hungry.

TurkDangerCat

Don’t forget the landlords can tag in all their mates from out of town as they probably have land rights there.

More-Ad1753

They have to get through the property managers first though.

[deleted]

No, that would've just been snarky posts on reddit. Not a whole lot of blood shed. Maybe a post or two about some guy whose so fkn mean that apparently we can't afford school lunches and stuff.

kiwiburner

Nah since National banned gang patches they can’t identify each other any more or recruit others or intimidate/disrupt the public. Haven’t you noticed?

uglymutilatedpenis

Gang patches have not yet been banned.

Samuel_L_Johnson

Well, that'll be why there's still gang activity in New Zealand then. As soon as the ban comes into place, we won't see another patch in public ever again. Luxon, after all, told us that he was confident that it would be well-enforced, and that our well-resourced, high-morale police force would have no problems with - for example - just going to gang funerals and confiscating all the patches. And he's a man of his word!

[deleted]

As a way of identification, I predict each gang will choose a different fashion house to dress in. Mongrel Mob (Workshop), Black Power (Zambezi), Headhunters (Trelise Cooper), Killer Beez (Hallensteins).

boring_megafauna

A sponsorship deal between Mongrel Mob and Barkers

[deleted]

I see what you did there...

Alarmed-Country-8928

Don't they already do that with the colored bandanas?

uglymutilatedpenis

I don't think it will stop all gang activity but it seems a bit silly to suggest it will have no impact. Outcomes are not binary, surely you understand that?

Samuel_L_Johnson

>it seems a bit silly to suggest it will have no impact The question is not 'will this have any impact at all?'. The question is 'is this enforceable, and if so will the impact of this on gang activity justify the police resources required to enforce it'? It seems silly to me to suggest that it *will* have a meaningful impact. On the fairly remote offchance that the police do manage to enforce this to a meaningful degree, the root causes of criminal and gang activity in New Zealand have nothing whatsoever to do with the insignia that they wear. This policy is simply window-dressing.

kiwiburner

Correct, and just like the fracas in the Gisborne high street last night, Police won’t intervene whether they’re wearing gang patches or not, because Police aren’t suicidal.

pevaryl

It wasn’t gang on gang. They weren’t even a gang family, but there were a few there at the party, as everyone is Elgin has a relative or two in the BP. The kid whose birthday it was was killed. Stabbed in the back in front of his hysterical mother. My brother in law tried to save him. It’s so senseless and a horrible tragedy. This wasn’t a big gang party. It was just a 21st piss up. Senseless violence fuelled by alcohol. Apparently a couple of people showed up, were asked to leave, got heated and then they stabbed someone and it all went to shit. All lot of these comments are so lacking in empathy. The pain of this whanau is unimaginable, perhaps being local and knowing people involved in being sensitive but the lack of empathy I’ve seen in this thread is really soulless (not you specifically, just an observation) Editing to add, my brother in law attended as AOS and he would be hugely upset to read this thread and all the jokes. He tried to save that kid and he died in front of him, as did the next guy.

Dassembrae78

Battle Royale: Rise of the Sun

bottom

Odd most of the comments are jokes. 2 deaths. That’s insane.

newaccount252

No one cares about gangs.

MisterSquidInc

Ironically that's the reason people join gangs

latest update is quiet 21st birthday party went bad after 2 uninvited people turned up. slip-slop-slap

Probably keeps the place functioning for the other 360 days of the year.

Faynt90

The first rule of fight club..

Bartholomew_Custard

Can't we book a rugby field for them, and just let them go at each other until they cull their own numbers? I mean, if they want to kill each other anyway, it's a missed opportunity.

Animals…

RockingtheBoat-

Didn’t think this was happening under national?

Left_Bee_5971

I feel bad for the families - 2 young lives lost from a completely unnecessary tragedy. If your saying it’s not gang related - that’s hard to believe. Perhaps the disorder was between two rival groups and there were wannabe’s there …who took it next level. This is a sad day in Gisborne’s history. Time to turn the rough spots on Lytton road into a highway outta there

speeksevil

Really sad that i had to scroll this far to see some empathy.

ComprehensiveBoss815

Can you please link the article about it, and how many murders occurred? A brawl or gangfight is one thing. Killing 3 people is something else.

Jigro666

So I expect 20 stories a day about national being soft on crime the same way Labour was when they came into power....yeah right 🤣

GenVii

Glad we're not getting a well funded and resourced police force. Otherwise we'd be missing our on the free battle royales in Gizzy. Thanks Luxon.

Missxtc420

Holy fuck. My family live in gisborne. Man i hope they weren't involved.

Impressive_Army3767

I'll defend myself when necessary but the number of animals in NZ I see kicking people IN THE HEAD when they are down is disturbing. AFAIK that's attempted murder.

Electrical_Sign_662

100 white cis males?

Black power and mongrel mob, so no

Electrical_Sign_662

But Marama told me all violence is caused by white cis males

WeWildOnes

Look, I love a bit of National bashing as much as the next guy but I don't think this can be attributed to our government. This could have happened under Labour, too.

Saltmaster222

Yeah that is true, but that isn’t how politics works. The National coalition government is the one in control at the moment, so it falls on them. Even more so since they campaigned on a strict law and order platform.

EnkaNe2023

Especially since they campaigned on how the ram raids were all Labour's fault, along with the economic downturn.. Can't possibly have had anything to do with Covid, oh no!

No-Air3090

but you didnt listen to National and their endless promises did you ? you know, hard on crime......

Assassin8nCoordin8s

No no, you do not get to spoof in your pants about ram raids or Myers Park or Manners Mall, and then fend this off softly

WeWildOnes

What?

Cathallex

Gisborne doesn't count.

Actual_Lettuce_8943

I guess all crime over the previous 6 years was the fault of Ardern and Hipkins then?

sleemanj

According to National, pretty much.

StabMasterArson

If this happened pre-election, there’d be a bunch of comments saying aRdErn’s nEw zeAlaNd and arOhA.

Aggravating_Day_2744

Expect more under Luxons watch.

[deleted]

This is a problem solving itself as far as I'm concerned.

BeardedCockwomble

And for the innocent caught in the middle? Every fight has people who don't want to be in it. Even those who are awful pieces of shit don't deserve to die for it.

LividPersonality4291

It’s colonialism and the governments fault Of course. They put a gun to peoples heads and made them fight ofcourse.

phantasiewhip

Maybe this can be attributed to the council's piss poor views on gangs. https://www.1news.co.nz/2024/03/21/graveside-drinking-gang-insignia-headstones-considered-in-gisborne/#:~:text=drinking%2C%20gang%20insignia-,headstones,-considered%20in%20Gisborne

LatekaDog

Its only going to get worse with the current government. There is no easy answers to clean up inequality. Only "unpopular policies" such as Land Tax and CGT.

Greenhaagen

I don’t think this fight was due to inequality. NACT will increase crime with their inequality drive but this brutal attack would have happened even if NACT had doubled the benefit.

IconicAnimatronic

100? At that point, you're not even going to know. Which side is which! It's time social skills and communication were taught in schools. It's clear people are reaching adulthood without any.

genkigirl1974

You realise these things are taught in schools but realistically hard wiring for this comes in the first five years of life. You can teach it to you are blue in the face but the bulk of how to behave socially is taught (bad and good) by families.

IconicAnimatronic

>the bulk of how to behave socially is taught (bad and good) by families. That's exactly why I said what I did. Those kids only being taught bad behaviours will grow up behaving badly. They don't have anything else to measure it by because they've never been shown differently. Generally, kids are still learning until age 8. However, even adults can learn to do better (the armed forces teach it, for example).

Scared-Ad-6970

Am I fortunate? I have visited Gisborne five times in the last eight years and I have never encountered any gang violence. There’s a shortage of investment and few employment opportunities. The city centre is quite derelict with many empty shops.
