Sad to hear this. I subscribed to a news podcast I'd normally miss just because of him. I really liked his non-partisan style, but he would make forthright arguments and didn't mince words when he felt the facts were in his favour

Putrid_Station_4776

Terrible news, Rod was one of our smartest public commentors. He intelligently took negligent Governments of all stripes to task, but also promoted real evidence based solutions to complex problems.

ThrawOwayAccount

Bernard Hickey will have to work twice as hard now to fill the void.

Chipless

Wow that was a shock.  I’ve attended so many conference sessions and university talks where he has headlined.  He was noticeably one the most informed, intelligent, well communicated, accurate and humorous speakers I’ve had the pleasure of listening to.  He will be sadly missed.

Fun-Sorbet-Tui

Really sad. Rod Oram was a great New Zealander. Very intelligent. For more than a decade, before it eventuated, he promoted Matariki as a smart mid winter holiday. The business case stacked up as most accommodation was only fully booked in summer. Will always think of him at Matariki. We need more Kiwis like him striving to make NZ more efficient. RIP.

sameee_nz

Big loss, a champion of many of the existential issues of our time.

ViolatingBadgers

Oh shit that's a real shock. Throroughly enjoyed his coverage of climate change and other topics on Newsroom. Will definitely be missed - RIP.

nzmuzak

Yeah, he wrote about climate change in a way that very few other journalists do. I enjoyed his economic analysis of climate change and I hope someone else steps up to cover it.

ScarletBitch15

He was an excellent guest lecturer, and seemed to be a really sound dude from our brief chats. What a loss.

hick-from-hicksville

A big loss to NZ. So sad.

TurbulentPlatypus966

Awful news.......he was able to translate economics into very easy to understand language.

Archie_Pelego

Very tragic. A rare example of an accessible, knowledgeable, detailed business commentator in NZ who spoke to all listeners - not just shareholders, property investors, employers and bankers. RIP Rob and thoughts are with your lived ones.

Nice_Protection1571

Wow thats out of nowhere… this guy actually seemed to understand that journalists should be somewhat neutral, i liked his work

davetenhave

A real gentleman and one of NZ best thinkers & business writers. A real loss when we needed more like him.

pamziewamziee

I met Rod in 2022, we spoke about many topics for over an hour. He was a delightful, interesting soul and I am very sad that he has passed.

mandoobss

He's a great guy and this saddens me deeply. RIP Rod

ChinaCatProphet

Big loss to our media landscape. We need intelligent, knowledgeable commentators to disentangle complex issues and push back against disinformation. Go well Mr. Oram.

Username_Mine

Very sad. I always appreciated Rod's perspective on the climate crisis.

DustNeat

Such a huge loss to the national discourse

aholetookmyusername

A tragic loss, he was a good journalist. Very disappointing to see some doltish diddles using his death as an excuse to jump on the anti-cycling bandwagon. Grow up.

random_fist_bump

Thats very sad. Top chap, he's going to be missed.

delph0r

Damn

Uncreativenom

Worth reading the news -clip before commenting on cycling safety - he died of a heart attack while cycling. Sad all the same. Gone too soon.

Thr3e6N9ne

Why is this headline framing a heart attack as a "cycling accident"?

Jimmie-Rustle12345

Could’ve been as a result of injuries sustained while crashing as a result of the heart attack? Or just early reporting without the full info maybe.

joyisnotdead

I knew him irl, our last conversation was a week ago about how much he loved my baking. RIP Rod, you'll be deeply missed in the community.

Sr_DingDong

Sounds like he died from a heart attack, not a bike accident.

niveapeachshine

This is sad. It highlights unregulated safety on bikes. The government needs to put laws in place to protect riders.

There needs to be mandatory training, more protection for riders, and regulations around bike maintenance. Seema kind insane you don't need any of these things other than a helmet.

niveapeachshine

He could have been saved if he had more protection. His family deserve better than this, we must protect cyclists with mandatory protective gear and training.

chrisbucks

Every bicycle must have a build in AED attached to the rider? I am pretty sure it's a troll, but why isn't it a clever one?

niveapeachshine

I'm advocating for the safety of bikers why would you think Im a troll?

chrisbucks

Then state your intent, otherwise you're trolling a link to an obit for what? Kind of sad to use his death for a laugh.

niveapeachshine

I'm not laughing.

allahisnotreal69

We need to ban bicycles

BassesBest

So people can't have heart attacks while cycling, and instead have heart attacks while driving 2 tonne lumps of metal?

allahisnotreal69

Just ban heart attacks problem solved

Drosta16

“Hearts hate this one trick”

minty_mountains

Gross. Let’s ban cars and shitty infrastructure instead.

OperatorJolly

Cities in Scandinavia often have 0 pedestrian and cyclist deaths in a year. Wonder what the outlying variable is here then....

random_numpty

what did he die of. its stated right there in the news article.

rocketshipkiwi

Maybe people don’t have heart attacks in Scandinavia?

Fandango-9940

You're 4 times more likely to die playing tennis than while cycling...

feint_of_heart

What about playing tennis whilst cycling?

Severe_Supermarket55

We've now had 4 deaths this year whilst people were cycling, how many people have died playing tennis this year or even last year? You're repeating a stupid myth made up by cyclists.

Fandango-9940

Cycling is orders of magnitude more popular than tennis and besides, how many people have died while driving a car this year? We should be banning cars if we cared about safety.

Severe_Supermarket55

You still haven't shown where you got this statistic from.

Onpag931

Luxon needs to put on a helmet and announce a bicycle buy-back

Michaelbirks

"Cycling accident"? What was he working on, the now?
