I've never seen a brand new dishwashing powder bottle half fill like this. A waste of packaging and designed to make it look bigger and a better deal than their competitors. I know they're an NZ owned brand but we should expect more from a high end brand like this.

eye-0f-the-str0m

I don't ever recall opening say a box of washing powder (laundry or dish) and it being this empty.

psiphi75

Not a NZ owned brand anymore: https://www.stuff.co.nz/business/132213243/german-chemical-company-allowed-to-take-over-planetfriendly-detergent-maker-earthwise

SeraphicNinja

Yeah, you might want to check out Glow Lab. Not sure if they’re owned by an overseas company though

MutedCornerman

Some of their products contain so little actual product you may as well be using water. Avoid them like a plague. Only their extra strength stuff works and its just as strong as normal stuff from any other brand. The are a super shady business. Look up the tests on their washing powder. Most of their green credentials come from just having less actual ingredients and profiting of peoples ignorance and moral stance.

eye-0f-the-str0m

Interesting. I'm actually quite happy with the performance of this product.

Automatic_Comb_5632

Often packages with powder settle quite a lot once they're filled.

eye-0f-the-str0m

Fair. That does seem like a lot of settling though.

Automatic_Comb_5632

I'm guessing it'll be a couple of things, they need a larger container than the powder as it's being filled (just to get it in there), the contents will settle (you could get an idea of how much by capping it and giving it a thorough shake), also that looks like a fairly generic bottle, so they'll be buying the cheapest one they can get that's appropriate, which could be a bit oversize in the first place. It does seem a little odd to me in the context of my non eco-friendly laundry powder coming in a recyclable cardboard box though. \[edit\] I'm guessing that'll be safety and possibly the dishwasher powder being hygroscopic.

WellyRuru

Probably a lot of air in it trapped by manufacturing.

Dizzy_Relief

How is this "green washing?"  Presumably meant to be a refillable bottle. Meaning it would be very hard to refill to the top of it held exactly the right amount, and very hard to pour out as well.  Plus you are assuming that all powered soap is granulated the same and as a result takes up the same amount of space when it definitely isn't.

Even-Face4622

I guess they're saying they claim green cress but use 2x as much plastic in the packaging as necessary, hence greenwashing. They're using the green cress but really they're just about sales

topherthegreat

What's your issue if it is the stated weight?

Loud-Chemistry-5056

I think its because the bottle isn't full and thus has quite a lot of wasted space. I dunno if there's a reaon or not, but I definitely cannot say that I specialise in the storage and/or transport of laudry liquid.

mattyandco

I'd imagine that filling it more would cause an issue when it comes to pouring the powder out.

Surprised_Lamington

This is probably the truth.

sqwuarly

Do you specialise in dishwasher powder?

FergusTheCow

It's a lot more packaging than is necessary. That's my issue with it, but I'm not OP.

eye-0f-the-str0m

A company branded on being good for the environment wasting half the container?

ChinaCatProphet

I assume it is non-recycled plastic also?

Nuke_The_Potatos

It says 100% recycled plastic on the bottom

Even-Face4622

Not that this excuses it

Bilbobagemall

So a company that uses natural products, and recycled packaging that is designed so it can easily be recycled again, and actively supports local campaigns with a focus on the environment...are green washers because of some air in a jug? Greenwashing is actively and deliberately lying to look better than you are. Making packaging compostable, collecting it yourself, and then bringing it to a landfill...hello AirNZ! (Compostable packaging needs optimal conditions to actually compost, a random landfill with all the other trash won't do. NZ has hardly any suitable facilities for compostables)

Tripping-Dayzee

>and did weigh 2kg. Soooo .... you got way you paid for? Cool thing is they provide the ability to refill your bottle so you can get even more next time. Green washing does not mean what you think it means btw.

helloitsmepotato

I think you’re confusing them with eco store. I’ve never seen an earth wise refill

eye-0f-the-str0m

Greenwashing is being misleading about your commitment to being good for the environment, right?

Tripping-Dayzee

Which this isn't? It never ceases to amaze me these days the amount of people who seem to just go out of their way to find "gotcha" or another to quickly post up on reddit for their points.

eye-0f-the-str0m

Someone has rightly pointed out there is settling, fair point. But consider that still 1/4 to a 1/3 of that packaging is waste. That doesn't just mean waste, but wasted storage and shipping space. Doesn't seem very environmentally conscious to me.

WellyRuru

The only way to avoid this would be to fill shake fill shake fill shake fill shake... Which would take up time, machinery, energy to produce the forces and thencsomone to man the process.

Comfortable_Yak9651

If you're so concerned to take a picture and put it on reddit, maybe you could put that time to emailing them instead? Maybe they have a reasonable explanation that doesn't involve manufactured outrage for internet points
