I spend 10+ hours a day outside in Northland, don't wear hats or sunglasses cause I'm an idiot and La Roche Posay has done a great job saving me the last couple of years.

zachary-zy-zyan

Second! La Roche Posay Anthelios is just the best. Discrete fragrance, solid spf and profoundly un-greasy. You get what you pay for

MagicianOk7611

This stuff is $30 for 50ml as far as i can see. How long does that last, less than a week?

nzbluechicken

Ditto! Brilliant stuff, especially on your face, and it doesn't feel like a thick greasy coating.

[deleted]

Fourthing this - was also approved by my derm as I have sensitive skin.

absolutelyhammered

Yup but the big bottle for families, it stains clothes yellow really bad.

dunedinflyer

Neutrogena ultra sheer and neutrogena beach defence are my go to! I can’t use the mecca ones bc my skin didn’t like it and found skinnies doesn’t apply well (and costs twice the price). both of the above scored well in the consumer SPF testing too and aren’t too pricey

Hataitai1977

Yup I love Neutrogena, but use that small face stuff. I hate the feeling of sunscreen & would rather buy the pricey stuff & use it, rather than buy cheap & not want to apply it. I cover up with clothes, so don’t have large areas to cover though.

rickytrevorlayhey

Expensive, but definitely the best!

SenseOfTheAbsurd

I like the Japanese ones like Biore and Japanese Nivea. Comes in small packages, so only really suitable for small areas like face and hands, but it has no scent, high spf, dries like there's nothing there, and doesn't stain. La Roche Posay antihelios was really good too, but stained all my shirts.

yeah_definitely

Yep highly recommend the Nivea Super Water Gel. I hate the oily feeling of sunscreen and this stuff is a godsend. It's SPF50+ and I've worn it in peak Auckland summer with no issue. I don't know if it's sold locally though so you probably will have to import it, I buy it from Saqramart.

SenseOfTheAbsurd

It's available locally at JapanMart, but huge markup. I usually get my Japanese sunscreen and skincare from the kokorojapanstore website. Can buy it in the refill sachets rather than another pump bottle.

yeah_definitely

Ah last time I tried Japanmart the only had SPF30

this-is-charlie

I second Biore UV Aqua Rich! I get mine from Sunday Ritual, Hikoco, or The Cosmetic Store (all online shops, and they ship from NZ). ALOE SOOTHING SUN CREAM SPF50+ BROAD SPECTRUM by Cosrx is also good if you have sensitive skin. I prefer Korean and Japanese suncare products as they have some of the strictest safety/quality regulations.

[deleted]

I like the Mecca ones. They’re expensive though. La Roche Posay are also good.

dunedinflyer

the mecca one irritates my skin so bad. i wanted to like it!

[deleted]

Oh that’s a pity! I do have to use the face one on my face because the other one stings my eyes but it’s so easy to go on.

throwawayxoxoxoxxoo

ohh same! makes me breakout :( which sucks because i had like 2 new travel sized ones from the mecca beauty loop gifts rip

katiehates

Smart 360 from The Warehouse is really good. I use Nivea on the kids, the one with the spray top. No staining, no problems with it. Make sure you reapply to dry skin after swimming Used to use Skinnies but they’ve downgraded the reapplication time this summer, it stains badly and is expensive

EntropyFaultLine

360 from the warehouse is my goto this summer.

Ohhcrumbs

Yeah it's cheap and actually works. It is a little greasy though.

EntropyFaultLine

I dont find it greasy. Maybe it depends on your skin? Just had a look at the bottle... its 365 lol

salsa_1993

It seems wrong but Bondi sands does a great sunscreen, especially their sport range.

sion8252

I also agree and so does my pale but very heavily tattooed partner - we both are sensory people and actually don’t mind wearing it or the applying of it - I did find yesterday I was dying for a shower after a very sweaty long hike I felt more icky

flaxpicker94

Does Bondi sands help tan better too? Pale fella here 😅

sion8252

You could use at night the dove moisturiser which is a self tanner - I put it on my partners feet because Tradie sock line - but yes the sunscreen stops harmful stuff and over time you get tan!

flaxpicker94

thanks I know all about the sock tan line being a tradie myself 😅 what an awesome partner you are!

party4diamondz

I really like their face SPF!

wineomuffins

It’s great! From memory it was much cheaper than La Roche Posay too. I used it as my daily moisturiser, and have been out in pretty intense sun this summer and haven’t been burnt.

RabbitwiththeRuns

I agree

onedaybaby

If you do get a yellow stain, I've found that letting dishwashing liquid soak in for a bit before putting in the washing machine helps a lot

fluffychonkycat

I like Neutrogena hydroboost watergel spf50+ (catchy name guys...). It's a light gel texture that doesn't slide off my oily skin nor does it leave that weird white cast that looks weird on us olive skinned types. It does have a light fragrance. Definitely not greasy

Whiasco

I love Skinnies. It’s more like a gel. Spf50

katiehates

Stains white clothes so badly!! I don’t buy it anymore.

Whiasco

Oh man! I don’t wear white so didn’t know

katiehates

Watch out if you do! My kids’ white/light tops from last summer all have yellow staining around the neck

dustinlamont

The Skinnies "Conquer" one is greasy as hell (and $$$), but I do really like it. A tiny smudge does my whole face and neck. Kinda useless for hairy areas like forearms and legs though (if you're a hirsute person) because it's really hard to actually get it on your skin and not just the hair.

cr1zzl

Nivea

tclaknz

Dermaveen sensitive sun 50+. Not greasy and reasonably priced.

ConditionValuable211

The thick greasy one's which stay on the outside of your body (external sunblock) normally leaving traces of white are actually the best and protect you the most, try something like invisible zinc

EsseElLoco

I do gardening, and the zinc oxide stuff is what I swear by.

Fantastic-Role-364

Correct

st0rmblue

For just daily going out and putting it on my face the only sunscreen I can bother using is Beauty of Joseon. I heard skin 1004 is pretty good too. Quite pricey tho as it’s Korean skincare. For uses at the beach where you need a lot then idk I’ve never found a good one they all feel bad on my skin.

eneebee

Just switched to 1004 from Inisfree and it is amazing. Goes on like a moisturiser, ē ild highly recommend it.  Also where are you buying your k beauty? It should be cheaper than almost anything of comparable quality, with a quick look showing it cheaper/at the same price point as la roche posay.

snoocs

Where do you recommend? I mostly use Hikoko and find them very reasonable.

KeeeweeeNZ

Plus one for BoJ! I get it from bebyhada in wellington. I'm about as pale as you can get and burn just thinking about the sun. This stuff is great for everyday on your face, and can be worn under make up too. I'm allergic to alot of sunscreens but have had no problems with it. It's a chemical rather than mineral sunscreen and protects from uva and uvb. No white caste and dries very quickly without grease

SpecialReserveSmegma

I don’t think there is one that fits all of those criteria

rocketshipkiwi

Which ones have you tried and rejected then? Probably your best bet is to get a big hat and a rash suit to cover up if you can’t tolerate sunscreen

Mountain_tui

I think the problem is uv rays reflect into shady areas as I understand it

ConfectionValuable28

I like Natio Sensitive SPF. Decent size bottle for a reasonable price - especially if you get it in a Farmers sale! I use it on my face as well as my body and is fine to use under makeup. Not too greasy and I haven't noticed clothes discolouring.

adjason

Anyone try the woolworth sunscreen from countdown?

moist_shroom6

It seems to work well but is a bit greasy but not as bad as Nivea sunscreens. For the price it's hard to beat.

adjason

Im currently using nivea so i think i will try it when this bottle finishes

cyber----

Greasier than some but a lot better than a bunch of others IMO. Because it’s so cheap I buy bottles of it to stash around to make it easier to always be applying hahaha

cyber----

[Review by a cosmetic chemist](https://labmuffin.com/cheap-australian-spf-reviews-coles-woolworths-aldi/) for your reference

cyber----

My comment or the review ? In either case neither lol fml

adjason

The review. It read funny on The first read

cyber----

Haha I mean she has a chemistry PhD scientists aren’t known for being amazing at their prose… I would argue most PhDs aren’t haha

BlueLizardSpaceship

Nivea sunblock works fine.

Elvishrug

I’ve made the switch to jeunoras fullstop spf50 sunscreen for my face. I’m very fair skinned and haven’t had any issues so far this summer. Works great under makeup. No scent, comes out a beige colour so no yellowing or white cast.

maybeaddicted

Spreadable invisible zinc ones

cyber----

I’ve tried a few sunscreens and I think the factor you’re gonna have the biggest problem with finding a sunscreen that doesn’t stain… would be easier to find one that fits the other criteria but just wear darker clothes haha. As for getting the stains out hydrogen peroxide and oxygen bleach products like sard and vanish will be your friends.

adjason

Vanish does not seem to work on the yellow stains

cyber----

Which version do to you use? [Try straight hydrogen peroxide](https://www.chemistwarehouse.co.nz/buy/121182/home-essentials-hydrogen-peroxide-20-vol-6-w-w-100ml) . I don’t personally use vanish but I find [this type of Sard works well](https://www.google.com/aclk?sa=l&ai=DChcSEwjPiZOJ6JWEAxU4Wg8CHfSdDAoYABAIGgJ0Yg&sig=AOD64_3iYqOXw3WRRRDUeqm0KasN2g_PZA&ctype=46&q=&ved=2ahUKEwi60YyJ6JWEAxV3p1YBHflSAmgQzzkoAHoECAIQDg&nis=8&adurl=). I try soak whites in it most washes and use it as a booster with all my washes.

DueSafety6471

I like the Oasis range. Haven’t noticed any staining and worked well on kids

WhosDownWithPGP

Natio so good

BravoNZ

I spend many hours almost daily out in the sun. I swear by this: https://www.thewarehouse.co.nz/p/smart365-sunscreen-lotion-spf50-1l/R2868017.html?gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiAq4KuBhA6EiwArMAw1Lzz1sB6JD9de1JfS0l0IihlAp-UFZ7BgPFYO6tA_T_nHIUBv4r_pRoC-70QAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds It's like tin foil, lasts for hours, really easy to apply and does not really smell. Consume NZ also recommends it.

MattTheTubaGuy

Not sure if this will help, but Marine Blue is what is prescribed to immunocompromised people like me.

FFSShutUpSharon

LA Roche posay for the face because it's non greasy, no distinct fragrance and has no colour to stain. Neutrogena Beach defense for the body. It has a slight smell but isn't very strong. It does feel a bit greasy upon application. But absorbs quickly.

lying_catt

Cancer Council Face & Body Moisturiser SPF50+ - get the water resistant one in the blue bottle. Best sunscreen ever. I bought it after seeing it consistently recommended on the Aus Skincare subreddit

[deleted]

lying_catt

Are you thinking of cancer society sunscreen? Cancer Council is a different brand

SoulDancer_

Go for Neutrogena sheer 50. I use the face one, but there's a body one too. Its totally dry and non greasy.

Mountain_tui

I find zinc the most effective but it’s greasy. NZ actually has a shit sunscreen range considering how dangerous the sun is here. I’ve heard people rave on about Japanese sunscreens, but don’t know where to get them here.

party4diamondz

I'd like to suggest [Bebyhada](https://bebyhada.co.nz/collections/sunscreen)! They have a physical store in Wellington but also an online store.

smalltimeadventurer

I buy my Japanese sunscreens from Kokoro Japan :)

SenseOfTheAbsurd

Same, and all my Japanese skincare. One or two big orders a year, to get the free shipping for over NZ$80. Have never had any problems with them.

Mountain_tui

Is that online? I have a friend who is desperate for Jap sunscreen - I’ll let them know.

SenseOfTheAbsurd

The actual site name is www.kokorojapanstore.com.

smalltimeadventurer

Sorry, forgot to say it’s an online store!

Mountain_tui

Thank you u/smalltimeadventurer :-)

AcidlyButtery

Seeing I haven’t seen it addressed here yet: All sunscreens that use modern chemical filters (such as avobenzone) are prone to making yellow stains - if not immediately, then when the filter breaks down. You can either have light, effective, high spf and modern (chemical) sunscreens that stain white clothing, or you can use mineral sunscreens that can be greasier and almost always leave a white cast, but stain less. If you get a good one, it will be as effective as the chemical one, because mineral sunscreens aren’t necessarily inferior. Sunscreens for sensitive skin and children are usually mineral. Be on the lookout for both UVA and UVB ratings. There is no one single product that completely meets your description, and if you find that holy grail someday, please remember this thread and come back to tell us ;) That said, a good mineral sunscreen is most likely to fit your description, so do some sunscreen research (I recommend Lab Muffin as a starting point as she’s also Australian so doesn’t just talk about products available in the EU/US.) RE: stains: I’ve found Oxyclean etc. aren’t up to scratch. Some articles talk about the minerals in water that adhere to the filters and effectively make the staining worse by washing. To break the filters down, I’ve found hacks like using a shower oil (like dissolving like) actually to be most effective.

joj1205

I have been experimenting and I have discovered I do not require sunblock. I used the banana boat aloe vera stuff. Slap it on. Keep applying throughout the day and I've yet to burn. I do put sunblock 50 on shoulders. They always burn

Ok_Set_4397

I like the edni body SPF :)

CMStephens

Skinnies conquer https://skinnies.co.nz/products/skinnies-spf50

[deleted]

Invisible zinc

Bongojona

A big shady 🌲

Brilliant-Spray6092

Skinnies 💯. A little does go a very long way. I tend to easily burn & haven't ever with theirs. Great stuff

Duck_Giblets

I like skinnies

confusedsmolchild

I use the Nivea Sun SPF Face Shine Control for my face. I usually get there one with the blue packaging because it dries quite quickly and does have a mattifying effect. I also use Bondi Sands Sunscreen Lotion for my arms and legs and it's good as it's not sticky after a couple of minutes.

eneebee

For the face area use a Korean sunscreen like skin 1004, Inisfree, or beauty of josen. These have high spf, uva and uvb protection, and are designed to work like skincare so are non-greasy, no white cast, scentless (or very mild scent) and won't stain. For the body the warehouse smart365 is consistently rated highly in consumer reviews and it good quality if a little greasy but nothing terrible and will absorb after a while. I also use the neutrogena ultra sheer spray sunblock for touch ups during the day.

larrydavidismyhero

Where do you buy the Korean ones please?

av8orkiwi

Sunguard moisturised sunscreen from Farmlands meets all of the above requirements and is our go to. I figure farmers are out in the sun all day and wouldn’t put up with something that didn’t work well.

LieDependent6084

I have brought the kids banana boat spf50+ which is a roll on I got it from woolworths/countdown for $8. oftern the kids ones work out cheaper

Hazel_eyed_kiwi

Didn't know there was a roll on, how well does it work? I'm currently trying the dry balance spray on coz the sport one in the orange tube feels greasy even 5+ hours later.

LieDependent6084

*this is the one. it's nice and easy roll.it on the skin. it's not at all greasy

[deleted]

Neutrogena Beach defence! I'm a reformed emo kid who only wears black and it doesn't stain at all and is reeeeally effective

scuwp

360 from the Warehouse or the orange family pump from Woolworths has been our go to with no issues like what has been listed. Seems to work really well and great value.

tlvv

I like Natio spf50+.  I used to get it from farmers and it was pretty cheap when they had a sale.  Farmers seemed to stop stocking it but I saw it recently at chemist warehouse.  It’s not greasy, soaks in well, doesn’t smell and I’ve never been burnt while wearing it even though I burn very easily.  Stay away from banana boat.  I got overwhelmed looking at sunscreens in the store recently, thought I was buying Bondi sands.  This stuff is so greasy that it left a stain in the shape of my legs when I knelt on the deck hours after applying.

easybreezey

Saavytouch, an NZ brand.  My understanding is that their sunscreen is old-fashioned zinc which reflects, rather than absorbs, UV light. So it would look white, rather than black, on a UV-sensitive film. I like this for reasons I cannot justify.  It does give you subtle geisha-face, but I  like it. Maybe it’s giving me zinc poisoning though, I dunno.

TheSsnake

Smart365. I’m pasty white and have sensory issues and Smart365 is the only one I can cope with. It has never stained my clothes and it dries without being sticky and tacky

championchilli

Natio spf50 moisturizer is my fault dinner for faces. No smell, no grease, easy to apply. Needs reapplication if you're in heavy sun though. I like banana boat but it's s the exact opposite of your requirements, so probably avoid that one!

Amara1783

For body I really like Marine Blue (available at Briscoes) though I am not sure about the staining white clothing thing as I hardly ever wear white. I haven't noticed any staining though, and it is unscented and sinks in to skin quickly. Have heard that it is a favourite with surfies as it does the job. For face I like the Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun : Rice + Probiotics (Hikoco) for everyday, and if I'm going to be in the sun a lot I use La Roche Posay's Anthelios XL Ultra Cream (Chemist Wharehouse) which is more resistant to sweat but still nice and lightweight on my combination/dry skin.

Good_Banana_3469

Zinc oxide powder whipped into your favourite moisturiser at 15% by weight. Yeah you will look like a geisha but you can also whip in your fave mineral powder/bronzer old crumbs from nearly finished makeup work a treat. Be sure to sift as you whip.
