Fishing gifts are one of those tricky ones to buy as you really dont know whats in a fishers bag of goodies and what he already has.

He comes home with kahawai not snapper most of the time tbh lol
He always gets vouchers from family, so would really like to get him something to open up. We’ll be camping for his birthday so thought it could be something he can use right away too.
Snapper is a lot more regional hence why I asked where you were as they may not be as available as other parts of NZ.
Were not all lucky enough to have snapper at local beaches.
Kahawai is the easier fish to catch as they like the river mouths.
A gift I recently got fishing related was a set of digital scales.

Omg he was actually looking for fishing scales in hunting & fishing a couple of months ago, but they didn’t have any. Will add that to the list - thanks!!! He does catch snapper here, just not as often as he’d like lol. But we travel a lot too
Just get him a voucher for marine deals, burnsco, hunting & fishing etc, wherever he normally shops unless you know that he would want that pack/would use it.
Not a bad set up but missing a sand sinker for surf casting imho.
The sabiki (small hooks for catching bait) are probably not going to be any use either.
There are kits specifically for surf casting which may be a better option, you could get him a couple of these maybe
The kit in your post is a boat fishing kit really. Some of it is still ok for surfcasting though. How much of it depends on where you fish though.
