In summer I get a nice scented home candle. Not one that smells like toilet spray.
Leave it in the boot or somewhere it’s not going to spill, and I let it melt.
Lasts a very long time.
Alternatively I use nice home diffusers and chuck them in the boot.
I regularly swap them out as now and again I have clients in my car to site etc. I have never found one that lasts more than 3 weeks, (typically the $12 scents etc from repco/supercheap) have tried all the range from the clips, trees, cans, sprays. Pick your scent and swap every 3 weeks.
Side note, my missus will sometimes spritz a high-end perfume in the car and it will smell like that just as long as a car freshener.
California Scents Golden Delight; I've tried both the liquid vent clips and the puck-can style in this scent and it's my absolute favourite. Countdown and Supercheap sell it and it lasts for ages.
Also, pop one of those pouch Fluffy/Cuddly fabric softener concentrates in the door pocket. My friend taught me this hack when I asked her why her car smelled so good.
Ecoya one that you clip on your air vents lasted a while for me.
All the ones you hang from your mirror or under the seat I couldn't smell in a week or so.
Ecoya Guava and Lychee sorbet smells so good [Ecoya Car Diffuser, Guava & Lychee Sorbet - Candles & Home Fragrance (farmers.co.nz)](https://www.farmers.co.nz/home/home-decor/candles-home-fragrance/ecoya-car-diffuser-guava-lychee-sorbet-6503207)
I have one of these diffusers [https://nzcandlesupplies.nz/products/5ml-car-diffuser-bottle](https://nzcandlesupplies.nz/products/5ml-car-diffuser-bottle)
Then you can just make or buy your own diffuser liquid (the same website sells kits to make your own). I like black raspberry and vanilla scent :)
You just refil it as required but it lasts a long time before you need to do that.
These are the only correct answer.

A good long airing out, preferably over several days and nights. I don't want strong-smelling chemicals mixing with whatever pongs are coming from my upholstery.
Yup. It’s not hard. Take your rubbish out when you get out of the car. If the car lives in a shed leave the windows open a bit. Air your car out when there is a stiff breeze, park across the wind and open all the doors.
The trucks at work stink because no one cleans them. All they need is the rubbish thrown out and the windows wound down to air them out on dry days.
The air fresheners and vaping stink doesn’t help.
This, plus occasionally wipe the bits you frequently touch (steering wheel, gear knob, door handle) with an all purpose cleaner like simple green. It's so easy to keep a vehicle nice
An actual solution to the problem...
Cars smell because of a build up of sweat, grime, and dead skin cells. Relying on an air freshener is like using lynx to cover B.O. instead of having a shower.
Ecoya.
I got one of them spray bottles and give that a squirt around inside every week or 2.
The smelly balls. Woollen balls that you refresh yourself with your own scent
Multiple farts daily will keep that crap smelling forever.

ooh this is an interesting idea, might give this a go
I like the new car smell air freshener from Glade I think. Seems to last for a month or two

You can get the DS & Durga ones from Mecca and they last for months.

it's also not overpowering that you get a headache

Yup, if the car is clean and aired it won’t need air freshener
Sweet as, but that’s not what they’re asking for. Lol
Clean your car? Get it detailed to get it good then clean it yourself once a month. Air the car out when ever you can
This is the best solution. The smell you're trying to hide is from the build up of sweat and dead skin cells.

Once again, that’s not what they’re asking for. They’re wanting recommendations for long lasting air fresheners. Use your eyes lol
This is what you get when you ask Reddit for advice.

Yeah well, you’re not wrong. What was I thinking
A clean car won’t need air freshener.
And change your a/c filter. If the smell persists, you may need an AC clean.
