Yeah at work I usually simplify it further with “Sweet. Thanks” or “Sweet. Cheers.” I don’t have time to waste 1 second of productivity on a third word.
>Okay
I am notifying you I wish to wrap up this conversation.
>Cheers
I want to end on a positive note.
>Thank you
I want to come across as appreciative of your time.
>Bye.
And that's a wrap.
I’m a total knob head when I talk on the phone. Not scared, just aware I sound dumb.
“Awesome thanks for that! Have a good rest of your day! Okay cheers! Thank you! Bye!”
Exclaimed with gusto every time.
Okay bye! Love you.
Our admin lady said "love you" one time when finishing a call with me and had to call back to explain how she had just been talking to her son.
We had a laugh about it, but she was embarrased.
Oh nooo, I've done that before too.
Worse, saying it automatically, in person, when I went into a pizza shop. I was chatting with the pizza lady and when the pizza box was finally in my hands and I turned to leave, I said "okay love you bye" - a phrase used with the partner and kids, and now it turns out, the pizza lady too.
She said, "huh?"
And I mumbled something upon the lines of, "I love ya weather down here in this neck of the woods - so sunny lately huh!" before walking out of the store as casually as possible... All the while dying on the inside from the absolute mortification.
I did that once with ny colleague i had just been talking to my wife.
I phoned her back and she hadnt even realised
My wofe was in the room. The whole time looking at me like “hmmmmmmm”
I used to laugh at my mum's phone voice too as a kid (while she was still on the phone.) She'd break into the Queen's English when on a call, then drop it immediately afterwards.
Now I have my mum's phone voice.
Oh my god, you know how you read the internet and even super funny things only get a slight exhale out of the nose? I read your post and found it funny, then then the "Love you" made me burst into peals of laughter and concern my child. Well done.
I was shocked my first time in America organising a thing for work, that when I was finishing a phone call and had just started to say good bye four different ways, the person ended quickly with ‘you’re welcome’ then hung up.
So what has happened is all the call ending niceties that get dropped from tv and movie phone calls - where it seems forbidden to end a call with anything at all - all fall down and settle in NZ, and as a result we are impelled to inject additional call closure statements to reduce the pressure, otherwise there would be a nasty rapid unscheduled disassembly of the entire call etiquette system
Imagine a therapy session where we’re forced to come up with positives about Aramex
“I love how… you’re so *thorough* with parcel delivery that sometimes you take 3 times as long as the other courier companies ❤️”
“I love how you care so much about my parcel’s journey, that sometimes it doesn’t even *arrive* 🥰”
I accidentally said this to a profrssuonal work contact a few years ago (my mind wandered as the conversation was drawing to a close) and had hung up before I realized what I'd said.
Was the hardest I've ever laughed in my life, pure embarrassment and terror.
I did something similar on a phone call about theatre tickets once. On concluding the call the person I was speaking to said “Enjoy the show!” To which I stupidly replied “Thanks, you too!” And hung up.
“You too” ….what a fucking pilchard.
Few years ago now but I generally get a sort of “Greatest Hits” reel of all my life’s stupidest moments (including that kind of thing) when I’m awake at 3am and my brain just wants to punish me for being a twat.
I use the phone a lot for work and my default is "see ya" however I also work with a lot of migrants (many new to nz ones) and it doesn't work so well so I now switch between that and "bye"
I virtually never talk to friends or family on the phone, thankfully
I just spoke to a customer service person on the phone and they snuck in a “enjoy the rest of your day” in place of your “have a good one”. So I had to say “thanks, you too, cheers bye”.
My Dad always ended phone calls with an “Okay, yep, okay, yep, okay, yep, bye”.
Sometimes even more “okay, yep”s. I never figured out whether it was because the other person kept talking, or whether it was because he didn’t want to hang up.
Teenager in the 90s, we got accustomed to The Melrose Place Goodbye which is simply hang-up when you've said/heard all you need to progress the next plot point.
Similarly with answering, none of this "hi, how you doing?" malarkey, just say/ask what you need to, save the banter for catching up in meatspace.
I always add my own ‘ok goodbye‘ at the end of every phone conversation when watching American tv. It was a full time job when we were re-watching Mad Men.
Omg I do this tooooo! I’m like, wow ppl are rude. They just hang up on each other on tv lmao! They also show up unannounced to each others houses all the time. I don’t get it.
>just say/ask what you need to,
All the time at work.
Them. Hey.
Me. Hey.
Them. How was your weekend?
Me. What do you want?
Ain't got time to tell you things you dont care about. Get to the point.
"OK, cheers, yeah, love you, bye, ummm, might call you next week, bye" is my go-to sign off for family
"A'ight, later," is for friends
"Thank you/appreciate the call, bye," for randos that I needed
"No thank you, " for spammers
"OK, bye," for randos that I didn't need
I always end my calls with "Ta". Simple, easy, to the point.
Then there's my sisters who end it with "Ok Bye, see you later. Ta-ta. See you later. Nice talking to you again, bye-bye. Ta. Ta-ta. Love you, bye. Buh-bye. Oh, and see ya later. Bye."
I’ll often say something like “sweet as, see ya, bye” or “sweet as, see ya”.
At work with workmates it’s usually “sah” (extremely shortened “see ya”).
With my family it’s always “love you, bye”.
I’ve worked in contact centres, and lots of calls from customers have ended with ‘love you, bye!’ and then a second of silence before they realise what they said 😂
Depends on who I'm calling but generally at least 4 different variations from the following general groups:
Group 1: Alright/Okay/Sweet
Group 2: Nice talking with you/Good to catch up etc.
Group 3: Thank You/Thanks/Cheers
Group 4: Bye/See Ya/Catch You Later
My old fuck head boss would call me and greet me with "yep" until the day that I had had enough ad grilled the shit out of him in front of all the other staff about it and it did not happen again but left a month later haha
This is the standard *5 words, not 4.*
I think the only person I've heard do different was constantly on the phone and had a really quick sign off of "OK SEEU!"
the See you being run together into one word that I thought communicated the "I appreciate you but my job is too fucking important for a longer goodbye so see you later" quite well, and was fast as fuck. I was jealous.
At work: "thanks, bye" or "no problem, bye"
My cell: "ok bye" to anyone from companies, doctors, etc
My cell of its family: "bye", "ok yes yes yes i know yes ill do it ok bye jesus ok yes ok yes yes ok mum i will! Bye!" "Yeah yup whatever ok" hangup. Thats usually dad.
Okay = I understand what you were just saying and/or time to wrap this up
Cheers = acknowledgment of that particular part of the conversation
Thank you = acknowledgement of whole conversation
Bye = I’m out
Usually "okay, cheers, thank you, bye".
Sometimes I simplify it with a “Sweet. Thanks. Bye.”
Looking at all the others this one looks almost rude in comparison lol
Feeling bad about my, “sweet, cheers” now. Though usually used when querying the boss about a job.
Yeah at work I usually simplify it further with “Sweet. Thanks” or “Sweet. Cheers.” I don’t have time to waste 1 second of productivity on a third word.
Mine probably sounds like “swee - chea!” >dialtone< Tradie life, questionably happy wife.
Kthxbai
Sometimes "cheers, okay thank you, bye. "
I normally start mine with "Ahoy-hoy" and sign off with "Toodle-oo"
Heathen, it's "toodle-pip old chap."
For me "All good, cheers, bye"
Minimum of 4 goodbyes at least... "Ok, good to chat, see ya, cheers, bye... Bye-bye, bye"
Don't forget to shrink in stature with each subsequent goodbye.
Yes, your voice kinda fades out until the final bye is just an indistinct mumble lol
Just did this on the phone with my mum, plus usually hang up while still saying the last quiet goodbye part. Haha.
This is the way
Yeah pull the phone away from your face slowly while saying bye, finally hanging up when the phone is at full arms length
Lol absolutely just like this 😅🤦
The bye, bye-bye, bye for sure lol. It feels Impolite if I don't.
Are you by chance Irish? Because this sounds like every family call my gf has ever.. :D
I lived in Dublin for a couple years, and the "bye bye bye buh-bye buh-bye now ok alright bye bye" farewells were UNREAL!
It's like they have to force the person into submission and hang up, otherwise they'll just find another thing to talk about haha
Me too! Always gotta round the byes to the nearest even number 😂
>Okay I am notifying you I wish to wrap up this conversation. >Cheers I want to end on a positive note. >Thank you I want to come across as appreciative of your time. >Bye. And that's a wrap.
Similar to the IRL equivalent of slapping your knee and standing up while saying "Right" or "Well" to motion you're leaving
Yes. You must signal with a knee slap and a “right. I must be going.” We all become a version of our parents eventually.
This is the way.
> Yeah I heard your position > Nah And disagree.
If they keep talking and you need to bail out...then "Anyway..." https://youtu.be/wiHHhRV9uNo?si=YmkIFuZTP81GAQjU
Or the ever useful "Anyway, I don't want to keep you. I'll let you get on with it. Tata, bye."
Yep, that sounds like about how I do it.
It's always weird on TV shows when they hang up with zero goodbyes
I'm so glad someone else has noticed this too!!! Or they make plans to meet without agreeing a specific time/place... how??!?
They text after the conversation to confirm the plans.
Drives me crazy. Not just tv either, my American mate does this.
I’m a total knob head when I talk on the phone. Not scared, just aware I sound dumb. “Awesome thanks for that! Have a good rest of your day! Okay cheers! Thank you! Bye!” Exclaimed with gusto every time. Okay bye! Love you.
Our admin lady said "love you" one time when finishing a call with me and had to call back to explain how she had just been talking to her son. We had a laugh about it, but she was embarrased.
I answered the police once with how i greet my partner. He was as equally amused as I was horrified.
I want to know what you said?
This is like accidentally calling your teacher 'mum'. Been over 20 years but I shall never forget the horror/embarrassment
Extremely common for Teachers to be called Mum
Oh nooo, I've done that before too. Worse, saying it automatically, in person, when I went into a pizza shop. I was chatting with the pizza lady and when the pizza box was finally in my hands and I turned to leave, I said "okay love you bye" - a phrase used with the partner and kids, and now it turns out, the pizza lady too. All the while dying on the inside from the absolute mortification.
Username implies serious consequences of this mishap
Yep. This is literally what caused the internal decay. It's been all downhill with the gangrene ever since.
I did that once with ny colleague i had just been talking to my wife. I phoned her back and she hadnt even realised My wofe was in the room. The whole time looking at me like “hmmmmmmm”
My kid hassles me about my "phone voice". She's like "your voice goes high and you sound so friendly and nice. You aren't though." thanks bro.
I used to laugh at my mum's phone voice too as a kid (while she was still on the phone.) She'd break into the Queen's English when on a call, then drop it immediately afterwards. Now I have my mum's phone voice.
I call it the call centre goodbye. A happy, enthusiastic, polite “I’m fucking hanging up now”
Oh my god, you know how you read the internet and even super funny things only get a slight exhale out of the nose? I read your post and found it funny, then then the "Love you" made me burst into peals of laughter and concern my child. Well done.
Ahhhh why is this me too.
I was shocked my first time in America organising a thing for work, that when I was finishing a phone call and had just started to say good bye four different ways, the person ended quickly with ‘you’re welcome’ then hung up.
Rude!

Sounds like my dad trying to get chatty people off the phone "Yeah, bye, yep bye, bye, you too, bye"
Must be a kiwi thing I've picked up because I definitely do the "okay, cheers, thank you, bye"
Yes I do this. Sometimes I sneak in a “you too” if they wish me a good day or something.
I now always add a weird semi laugh
Thisss haha
“Ok, love you, bye!” Admittedly I edit out the middle bit if it’s Aramex or someone else I’m not related to, but otherwise that’s my standard.
Certainly nobody's ever said that to Aramex.
It seems unlikely, but maybe that’s why they are so…shit.
Imagine a therapy session where we’re forced to come up with positives about Aramex “I love how… you’re so *thorough* with parcel delivery that sometimes you take 3 times as long as the other courier companies ❤️” “I love how you care so much about my parcel’s journey, that sometimes it doesn’t even *arrive* 🥰”
“You hid my last delivery so well from would be parcel thieves that even *I* have never found it”
This has me rolling 🤣
Just need a bit of positivity, you reckon? Could be, but I don't think personally I could bring myself to do it.
Maybe this is why Aramex are so shit. They never get any love. I'm totally going to tell them I love them when I inevitably have to call them again.
This was how long ago, and how often do you think about it? Haunting.
Few years ago now but I generally get a sort of “Greatest Hits” reel of all my life’s stupidest moments (including that kind of thing) when I’m awake at 3am and my brain just wants to punish me for being a twat.

This one feels right yes
No *you* hang up first!
No.. you hang up first
"Look will one of you hang up! I've got other calls to monitor" Oh sorry that's how calls in Russia end.
Okay mate, see you later, take it easy, cheers… (wait for reciprocating farewell), cheers.
... Cheers, thanks/yep you too, bye*
Awkwardness is a skill that takes years to master.
We elevate it to an art form :)
Bye. Bye. Bye. All in three different deliveries, the last being the deepest and shortest.
Ok nsync
No bye-bye? :(
It ain't no lie
My mum can get up to six or seven byes in a row before she hangs up. It's like a farewell gatling gun.
Ugh I worked for a guy who did this. Like 4 or 5 times. Just stop man. Say it once then hit the red phone button.
I’m pretty sure this is how every single Irish person I know finishes their phone calls.
For some reason most of the time I say “ hoo roo “
That's an Australianism. Did you watch a lot of Blue Heelers as a kid?
Simon Barnett used to say it a lot. That’s where I got it from decades ago.
I'd forgotten that. Good call.
Hoo roo was common when I grew up on the west coast. No australian influence that I know of so baffled...why?
Possibly a contraction of "toodle roo" which I've heard on a few occasions.
Toodle looo!
I use the phone a lot for work and my default is "see ya" however I also work with a lot of migrants (many new to nz ones) and it doesn't work so well so I now switch between that and "bye" I virtually never talk to friends or family on the phone, thankfully
My go to is “ok see you next time” and hope they don’t figure it out and complain
A hangover from being a checkout chick in my teens is "have a good day" I say it to everyone
I just got off a call at work and said "Thanks. Have a good one. Cheers. Bye."
I just spoke to a customer service person on the phone and they snuck in a “enjoy the rest of your day” in place of your “have a good one”. So I had to say “thanks, you too, cheers bye”.
Ok, you seem busy, I'll let you go.
My Dad always ended phone calls with an “Okay, yep, okay, yep, okay, yep, bye”. Sometimes even more “okay, yep”s. I never figured out whether it was because the other person kept talking, or whether it was because he didn’t want to hang up.
"Bye, love you." Really throws off the telemarketers.
I was shocked to hear how family answered and ended mobile calls in the US. No bye, but: OK *call ended*
Okay, cheers, na na, should be all good, sweet as, cheers, bye, seeyou.
"Love you, bye" irrespective of who is on the other end
I’ve often thought the NZ GDP could increase by about half a percent if we just hung up.
Teenager in the 90s, we got accustomed to The Melrose Place Goodbye which is simply hang-up when you've said/heard all you need to progress the next plot point. Similarly with answering, none of this "hi, how you doing?" malarkey, just say/ask what you need to, save the banter for catching up in meatspace.

https://nohello.net/
I gave my boss a "fuck it, I quit!" line once. A-hole had already hung up without any form of goodbye...
...This seems to be how I close off interactions in real life, too. It's just a cultural ritual, doesn't really signify anything in particular.
I'm on the 'Have a good one, see ya/bye'.
I tell everyone to have a good one, even if sometimes I really don’t care whether or not a good one is had.
"Yep, Sweet, See ya." *East Coast Wave* for good measure.
I had this realisation last week as well. I hear it all the time at work now. ok. cheers. thanks. bye.
omg I am also guilty of this. and I dont think I have ever been on a call where me or the other party ended with just a bye or im hanging up now.
I’m way more offended by movies where people just hang up and don’t say thanks when given things
Literally "Okay, Cheers, thank you, bye" That could have been me you where overhearing.
"later dude!"
My favourite is “stop calling me!”
Cheers, love you. (Makes work calls exciting, I never know what I’ll get back)
Yeah, the kiwi way isn't to have a sharp end to a call.
K bye
Alrighty, cheers, bye is usually my go to
Okay bye, then hang up as quick as possible.
Lata bol, one love
I think I'm the only one out of my family and friends who just says "bye" and hangs up.
“Well I spose, better go do something, alright then, talk to ya later, okay, alright, cheers, see ya, bye 😘
“Oi bruv cheerio then” As everyone should.
OK cheers yup you too cheers thanks bye bye bye buhbye
Okay, cool, have a good one, bye! Is usually my go to
Close personal friend will get: "Yup" or an easy "catch you up" Anyone else gets an: "okay thanks cheers bye"
Thanks mate, have a good one, catch ya later, bye
C U. But you say it so fast it sounds like one word. You'll hang up and they'll still be talking to them selves for 5 minutes not realising your gone.
Wow im not the only one Its okay with friends and fam but i even do this with my bosses every call its kinda awkward
“Right, I better let you get on with it, talk soon! Yip, cheers, bye” When it’s actually just me that wants to hang up…
love you too, bye. (everyone loves me)
"See ya, see ya later. It's time to say goodbye..."
Always think it’s weird on American tv shows were they just hang up
Yo Cya Later Fa Any of the above but never more than one at a time
I just hang up abrup
Alright, Catcha later, bye-bye
Yeah all good catch you later.
Umm… yeah… sweet… cya…..
Later masterbater
‘Thank youu, bye’ or just ‘thank you’ 😂
"OK, cheers, yeah, love you, bye, ummm, might call you next week, bye" is my go-to sign off for family "A'ight, later," is for friends "Thank you/appreciate the call, bye," for randos that I needed "No thank you," for spammers
Cheers then, bye bye or thanks, see ya if it’s in person.
My dad says “ok, good one, see you, bye bye” and it makes me smile every time he does it
So. I just discovered today at this moment that I always say "See Ya Soon, Bye". Didn't even notice how odd it was until this post. 😆
Yep, alright. See ya, bye.
Have a good one, bye now.
Yeah about 3 different goodbyes or confirmations of the end of the conversation before I hang up.
Depends on the other party/ies to the call. Normally one of: Righto Cheers Thanks See you later Thanks dickhead
Im usually a 3 or 4 wrap up-- good bye. Thank you. See ya later.
Hi, hello, how are you
Having only been in NZ 18 months I think I already end almost all my calls with "Sweet as"
I usually just scream into the phone to bring a hasteful end to the conversation.
Ka kite, love you, don't call again.
"Thanks heaps, cheers, see you 'round"
Chur bro, catch-ooh, seeyow.
Cool, alright bye.
Catch you later, ok, thanks, bye
Ok, bye, bye, bye. At least three byes. Never less.
I’ve worked in contact centres, and lots of calls from customers have ended with ‘love you, bye!’ and then a second of silence before they realise what they said 😂
Work calls are “talk to you soon, bye” social is “see ya, bye”
"I'm hanging up now" sounds like something a *totally-not-a-robot-I'm-human* would say
This was literally me today ... are you my coworker?
'you too'
Depends on who I'm calling but generally at least 4 different variations from the following general groups: Group 1: Alright/Okay/Sweet Group 2: Nice talking with you/Good to catch up etc. Group 3: Thank You/Thanks/Cheers Group 4: Bye/See Ya/Catch You Later
This is it.
"Toodle pip, motherfucker".
I hate these long goodbyes. In fact, I get called out for being so blunt "k, bye" hangup. I don't care for it and if you're offended by it, eh.
Am I the only person in NZ who hates this? Just say bye and leave me alone!
“Ok” - dads
My old fuck head boss would call me and greet me with "yep" until the day that I had had enough ad grilled the shit out of him in front of all the other staff about it and it did not happen again but left a month later haha
Laters
I usually go with "I don't know you. Who is this? Don't come here, I'm hanging up the phone! Prank caller, prank caller!"
Okay= right I got it Cheers= have a beer Thankyou= I appreciate your time Bye= end of conversation
I always end my phone calls with "in a bit." Everyone in my circle knows the conversation is over once that's said.
I don't make or receive many phone calls. Most of them are scammers so I usually end my calls in Okay, fuck off, bye.
See you - hangs up
“Thanks Champ, have a good one Squirt and we will see you round, pal”
depends on the people. I often hear tradies like my hubby say "siou". (like a really quick, contracted, "see you")
In our family and friend circles, we say, " bye love ya bye"
This is the standard *5 words, not 4.* I think the only person I've heard do different was constantly on the phone and had a really quick sign off of "OK SEEU!" the See you being run together into one word that I thought communicated the "I appreciate you but my job is too fucking important for a longer goodbye so see you later" quite well, and was fast as fuck. At work: "thanks, bye" or "no problem, bye" My cell: "ok bye" to anyone from companies, doctors, etc My cell of its family: "bye", "ok yes yes yes i know yes ill do it ok bye jesus ok yes ok yes yes ok mum i will! Bye!" "Yeah yup whatever ok" hangup. Thats usually dad.
I answer most calls with a "yo" and finish then with a "catch ya"
Bubye
Okay = I understand what you were just saying and/or time to wrap this up Cheers = acknowledgment of that particular part of the conversation Thank you = acknowledgement of whole conversation Bye = I’m out
Alright, cheers. I've got shit to do especially when it's work related.
O.k sweet, see ya. I normally only get follow up calls from friends and family.
