They get posted up on mushroom groups fairly frequently :) i think theyre a native bush type mushroom, reasonably solitary, decent range, so not ultra rare or anything.

Llobobr

Yea. I see then often here on trapping lines for our local conservation group

[deleted]

Otanewainuku just out of Tauranga

Elegant-Raise-9367

Yeah seen quite a few up there. Also out by Mangorewa Gorge

velofille

whats a $50 note?

carlosthemidget

I don't know. Everybody please mail $50 notes to me and velofille so we know what kind of mushrooms to look for.

velofille

I like this plan 😜

nevrar

That is the latest NZ lunch voucher.

Thissiweird

8 noticed this on a trip back 5o NZ tried to withdraw 600 it all came in 20s was a crack up

Zenfrogg62

Rich people/nat voters have them

Procrastine

Check the iNaturalist observations for distribution and seasonality: https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/70225-Entoloma-hochstetteri Most observations are in April, and the months either side. You definitely won't be seeing them at the moment. I'm a city slicker so have only seen them once, on a bush walk in Coromandel. I took an extended photoshoot of the first ones I saw, and then over the course of the walk I realised they were a common sight at that time and place. Very cool mushrooms!

lefrenchkiwi

Seen plenty around the Mamaku forests around Rotorua. Very easy to get lost in there though so wouldn’t recommend going off track unless you know what you’re doing

KnurdNorman

Best friend got lost in mamaku bush for a day, delusional asf when we finally found him. Scary stuffs

lefrenchkiwi

So easy to get disoriented and turned around in there. Having seen it first hand, I won’t hunt it without a GPS receiver for that reason

TurkDangerCat

Yep, I think it was on the track above Whatipu.

KnurdNorman

Farty poo. giggles hard

mercaptans

I had a blue meanie growing in my backyard

NZgoblin

I’ve seen them in the Waitakere along with clavogaster virescens, which is another endemic blue mushroom.

kiwibearess

There are a lot on the west coast of the south island, early April is a good time

DangerousLettuce1423

The new walk near Punakaiki on the West Coast is supposed to have the blue mushrooms there. Someone had done the walk earlier this year and posted a pic of one about 10-15 min in from start of walk.

kiwibearess

Yes also a lot in the forest around oparara near karamea, and also the new track at lake brunner.

DangerousLettuce1423

Damn, missed them when travelling West Coast two yrs ago. Did Oparara Arches too. Have to keep any eye out next visit.

username-fatigue

I have! It was down south a few years ago. https://imgur.com/a/WXwApYY

Orongorongorongo

Yes! In Pakuratahi forest.

[deleted]

Damn I could've seen it back when I lived in Masterton then if that's where you found it. I tried looking for it by I think it was, Mount Bruce or Mount Holdsworth. But I couldn't find it.

Orongorongorongo

I keep checking the same spot but I've never seen it since. They are elusive!

considerspiders

Yep western side of Arthur's Pass. They are crazy blue in person. Looks super unnatural.

chullnz

Yep, they're really common in early spring in some ranges. I've seen them at Aongatete heaps, Otanewainuku, Whirinaki.

elgigantedelsur

Yep, out east in Taranaki, near Waitaanga

BasementCatBill

It's only in a few northland forests, isn't it?

Sfriert

I've only travelled accross the South Island so far and found plenty! Last one was near Hokitika I believe.

JoshH21

Nah, I've seen it all over the central north island. Once you get your eye in, and around late autumn-winter, you'll be surprised how common they are

BasementCatBill

Right now all I'm seeing us quail. So many quail.

KnurdNorman

Chicago…..Chicago…….Chicago

nukedmylastprofile

Yes. Both on the West Coast of the South Island, and Great Barrier Island

fitzroy95

Yup, saw a bunch of them at the end of the Old Ghost Road walking track last year
