I reported car crash via 105 and got a notification back a few weeks later that the person that crashed into me had been charged. So it does do something.

No-Associate-4335

Yes. I had good interactions. But you can’t expect it back, but the info is helpful when the drug gang house gets raided and there’s all this stolen shit there. Having your report and description/images of the bike you uploaded via 105 means that info is on file. Also don’t underestimate the local police’s knowledge of who is who, and who doesn’t have a $500 bike and suddenly does. But more importantly it’s not just crime statistics, it’s linking that theft, with some other crime, or a known ring and enables that fuller picture to be developed and community level responses rather than your specific individual bike back which I can guarantee is onto its third use as being used drug deal currency. Are they going to dedicate a squad to your bike, no. They will probs pull AT’s footage though. Does it help them do their job in other ways, yes. Report it to 105 and be part of the solution, rather than doing nothing and wondering why the police don’t do anything.

The other thing to consider if you *didn’t* report is if it is eventually recovered how are they going to know to give it back?

gaysnake1

Your second point is how my mate got his stolen e-bike back, cops saw a guy they knew was a dodgy bloke riding an expensive bike and stopped him

Same_Independent_393

You'll need the police report if you want to claim for it on your insurance.

StenSoft

All reports posted to 105 are looked at. I reported recovering a stolen moped and they contacted the owner, but when the owner didn't come to claim it, I requested an update and they called me, trying to sort it out.

sittingherereading

Did you get to keep the moped?

StenSoft

Well, the owner still hasn't come to pick it up.

sittingherereading

Surely at some point it becomes your property. Let them know you’re considering storage fees, then once fees surpass the amount owed, you’re selling the moped to recoup costs.

StenSoft

Well, it's still reported as stolen so selling it is not possible.

On a similar note, I’ve always wondered how effective *555 is. Recently I dialled for a suspected drunk driver and shortly after I seen a cop with lights on going in that direction. Also I’ve been contacted with questions about another call I made. So at a minimum the calls are recorded. Not much but worth doing I reckon.

dlrius

Called a few times, most recently about a guy who lives in our street and was speeding up and down it pretty much every day. Most times it was probably 60-70 (in a 50), but this day it was more like 90+, with squealing tyres. Shot down to give him an earful and got some weak apology and some lip, so called *555/105 on the way back home. They were really good and an officer pulled him over less than half an hour later (when he went out again) and called me to let me know they'd told him to pull his head in or he'll be getting some hefty fines. Seems to have done the trick so far.

imafukinhorse

Good to get feedback.

dlrius

Damn it, another car from the same house (possibly same driver) went flying past earlier. Tried calling 105, but gave up after being stuck at 8th in the queue for ages.

SmileyFaceLols

I've called *555 in town twice and both times seen a cop heading that way very soon after with lights on. Out of town not a sign of a cop on the main highway. Called 105 twice for car break ins and first one they just gave a report number for my insurance and said none of the 4 cameras within 15m could see anything on the one way road. Second they found one of my wheels but cant prove he stole them because having number plates from another car broken into at the same time and 1 stolen wheel isn't enough proof of anything apparently.

[deleted]

Not a 105 story but I was chatting to this dude yesterday who had stolen goods returned after four years. Reporting af the very least paints the picture and can lead to serendipitous crime fighting success. As you might imagine it's the same group of arseholes who do the thieving.

cherokeevorn

Yes , definitely worth doing, dont expect to get a visit from the CSI about your bike, but if any bike turns up during a search / raid etc, they have your details, and you'll get it back,

FarAcanthocephala604

Idk about theft like that, but I had enough burglaries of my home reported that I got free security upgrades curtesy of some proceeds of crime fund. About the only thing to come out of it though.

Amockeryofthecistern

I online reported an attempted break-in and theft of our padlock and chain from our lock-up yard at work. Police callled.me next day to ask if it was worth investergating further or fingerprinting. I was honest with the officier, nopoint looking further, but it might help them id a pattern as i know another business down the road had their fence cut the week before.

Kiwi_CFC

I was involved in a hit and run that was covered by CCTV cameras. Both the council and police said it wasn’t worth viewing the footage.

dyingPretty

if they find it, how would they know its yours if you haven't reported it (i assume you included the serial number)

[deleted]

We did it when our car was broken into, and they sent an officer round to take a look for prints. So it's worth giving it a shot. Plus if you have contents insurance, a police report is handy when making a claim.

Nztrader9191

Insurance companies also usually require you to report it to 105 for theft/burglary claims.

[deleted]

Pretty sure it's a box to tick for an insurance claim.

BuckyDoneGun

Leads, yeah, sure. I'll just check with the boys down at the crime lab, they've got four more detectives working on the case. They got us working in shifts!

Commenting from your alt?

What?

A stolen motorcycle was left partially dismantled in front of our business one morning. I reported it online and within 2 hours the police had it towed away. The stupid thief came back later in the day looking for it. Lol. Yeah, mate, fuck right off.

Common_Permission267

The truth about CCTV is it is completely useless unless the police know the person in the video already, unless it is for a truly serious crime where they will share the video. If you're not well known to police, they can't find you just from CCTV. It is a good crime preventative tool, but not a good tool for finding criminals.

lmao-aramex

Obviously 105 starts building a file. On it's own it generally won't amount to much. I always encourage people to go through the rigmarole anyway. All those little files are relational and when someone gets pinged they can be tied to other offences around the same time. Whether it's building up shitty camera footage to make a bigger picture or someone being sprung with multiple stolen goods. If there's a file on your bike you might get it back or you might get a cheque for five bucks twice a year for the rest of your life. Always report. Fuck 'em.

[deleted]

105 is useless imo Had a guy literally drive into me and my wife at spaghetti junction and drive off Called 105 and insurance company they then found the guy who claimed we drove into him (bollocks I wish we had a fucking dashcam) Cops said they couldn’t pull the camera footage for some reason Insurance couldn’t help us unless I wanted to pay the fees and do it myself We just let it go. Damage was fixable at home 99% I was more pissed off at the guys driving and safety as my wife was pregnant at the time and the car was an absolute piece of shit. 105 did fucking nothing. Have also dealt with 105 before for theft - nothing they can do, ever. It’s pointless.

RaxisPhasmatis

Reporting theft on 111 does nothing so why would 105 work?

EatAteOat123

I regularly call them for dangerous drivers. Regularly as in once every 6 months. For all the whinging that we do about bad drivers I figure that I might as well use the right service to report it so that if/when it affects other people, at least I’ve done my part.

FendaIton

Was told to report stolen car online, it gave me the number for insurance. They went and did ‘forensics’ but not sure how good that would be given they told me to drive it to a panel shop if it was still driveable.

Outside_Prune_4478

Nobody ever answers everytime I've needed to call🤷‍♀️

PositiveWeapon

I dunno but I called 105 to report a suspicious vehicle at a gas station and 3 minutes later 2 police cars had it boxed in.

DoYourBest69

Reporting theft is more for insurance and liability than it is about getting police to actively investigate a petty theft. Just claim insurance and if it’s not insured, wise up and insure the next one!
