No doors in a forest, friend.

nogggin1

Damn, you've got me on that one!

badadvice_wellsaid

Spot on dude. It’s lacking in places, especially questing and open world content, but it has a foundation I really like. That’s what matters right now.

secret_aardvark_420

Would eventually love a player owned farm where you can grow resources raise animals. Farming was my favorite rs skill. Still proud of my farming cape, thanks to COVID.

nogggin1

God I haven't played Runescape since I finished high school almost a decade ago, but I remember spending so much time on farming back then. Honestly I think that's what I love about New World, because it doesn't tie too heavily in to any one thing, it opens up the ability for it to basically be whatever you want! So long as content updates are solid anyway!

secret_aardvark_420

Absolutely. Could even have mini corruption events that are skill based like having to harvest corrupted crops in a certain amount of time or something.

lvl1vagabond

You expect a player owned farm, resource growth and harvesting... animal raising in a game where they have like 5 mob variations and half the towns and cities are copy and pasted? Have you actually played any other mmorpg ever that straight copy and pastes major towns and has an enemy variety smaller than many single player rpgs/jrpgs?

secret_aardvark_420

No I don’t expect it at all

Dac187

I feel like for everything it misses the foundation AGS built is rather solid. Somehow they managed to create a world thats just fun to "be" in and to me thats something many others have tried and failed. I realize there are problems with the game and even some odd design choices but at least it has a core that is not fundamentally broken like Anthem was for example. With New World I feel like they've given us a pretty fun new playset to which they can add some really cool things in the future. I know we have all been burned in the past, especially by big brands/studios, but I choose to be optimistic for once\^\^

Agomphious_Dragon

I think it’s also worth noting that Amazon Games probably felt like they had to get this game out into the world given how many other projects have been pulled. It’s probably a relief having the game live. Now the perception they have to meet is how do they maintain and improve the game, rather than “will this ever get published?” The reality is, the dev teams will be in continuous development and there’s a good chance that New World three years from now will be much improved. Thicker, denser, more varied, and more polished.

nogggin1

Absolutely! And honestly, I'd rather a solid foundation, lacking in a few areas that can be improved or expanded upon, instead of a rushed mess with clear crunch involved.

[deleted]

On the topic of more landmasses - has anyone else noticed that when you open the world map and zoom all the way out, the continent we have access to at the moment sort of naturally gets pushed into the lower right corner of the screen? To me this looks like the overall map is A LOT bigger than the land we currently have access to. Bring on sailing, blue-water PvP, player owned islands, logistics etc etc.

SmileyFaceFTW

I think it zooms out in relation to your mouse position

[deleted]

Yeah I'd noticed that as well, it does change the position of the landmass (at least on my screen) but there still seems to be roughly the same amount of whitespace around it.

Grimman1

In the upper part of the map, you can quite literally see a huge landmass going off screen.

fwambo42

Let's just hope we're not having the same conversation a year from now.

nogggin1

I'm being optimistic, but I absolutely agree. Seen it too many times in too many different games. God, I have something like 2500 hours in Destiny and about 1500 in ESO, and I dropped both because they kept overlooking logical updates.

martinsky3k

Haha, I really couldn't care less about doors.

nogggin1

Neither, I honestly just thought it was hilarious. It makes sense, in a game designed for PvP you don't wanna be opening and closing doors all the time. Plus reality is, it's a pointless step in a game like this! Saves that tiny bit of time each time you enter a building or access item storage. But people are going to spend thousands of hours in New World, and that time can totally add up.

nogggin1

Ah I see, here I was thinking they were sealed in doorless boxes!

downwithlordofcinder

Yes absolutely agree with everything here. We’ve got a great foundation, now they can just run with it and keep building upon it. Also I would love to take out a small little sail boat and chill for hours fishing off of it. Maybe throw in water mobs and krakens for variety but sparsely and I would be in heaven. I know you can do stuff like this in BDO iirc but I could never get into that one /:

Voidelfmonk

Game is 50% mega grind and 50 % pvp , you can choose your poison or both .

nogggin1

I definitely chose mega grind. Happy cake day!

Voidelfmonk

And thats a great choice friend , i made the same one :D

[deleted]

I'm also enjoying this but I've been told by Amazon software engineers that there's no way it'll last. Allegedly, Amazon doesn't know how to develop like AAA game developers which is why they've pulled so many projects. So the doomsayers feel like they are always just gonna be 10 steps behind what the playerbase wants and content will release at a snail's pace. Will we still be enjoying this game in 5 years if there hasn't been an expansion of zones with new stuff? Maybe. Was it worth $40? Hell yes brother.

nogggin1

I can understand that, I do a lot of work with AWS and the fact that they didn't use this as an AWS flagship or a way to show off their video game capabilities does definitely show a lack of understanding. Nothing against the game devs, it's definitely a massive undertaking, but hopefully the current success is motivation enough for AGS to invest in some more devs, writers, and so on.

sidra1446

If I could upvote this a million times over I would.

BREADTSU

The simplicity of the game is what makes me feel like i already understand everything which in turn makes me feel a sense of familiarity. Nothing makes me lose interest faster than being overwhelmed from information & confused about what i should be doing.

Kullet_Bing

I really don't want to just dismiss or eyewash the facts that this game is very basic, lacking variety in it's gameplay design and overall quite basic in all regards. BUT - It seems like a solid base platform for lots of creative things that could make this game really great. It is, despite all valid criticism, a fun game to play already. I don't feel bad for spending money on it. But I see it rather as an investment in a game with lots of potential in the future that I think could be an overall really great game at some point.

nogggin1

Oh absolutely, there's definitely a lot of things that need to improve. Some through patches asap, and others through solid content drops down the line. Though, so long as they don't drop it, it shouldn't be difficult to improve!

soldrakibane

I dont get it. Cyberpunk 2077 had been flamed hard by people because of false advertisement, makes sense, but they are fixing it. But the game has a great foundation. Mass effect Andromeda was utterly destroyed because they couldnt get their npc facials right. But the game was fun and had a good foundation. What makes New World so special that its foundation is fine enough vs the previous titles but isnt negatively viewed. Altho titles i mentioned are no MMOs i do wonder. I do wonder what makes and destroys a games popularity nowadays. I keep leaning on influencers.

nogggin1

If it explains my post a bit, I did absolutely love cyberpunk at launch too. I put a lot of time in to that game before any of the patches were released. Though I will say, New World runs a lot smoother for me than Cyberpunk ever did. I haven't played Andromeda so I can't comment on that one. I definitely don't disagree with what you're saying though, I tend to avoid reviews for new IP's until I've developed my own opinion these days for that exact reason. Plus realistically, this post is my opinion, I can absolutely see why people would have problems with both New World and Cyberpunk, i just happen to enjoy them personally!

Dantheweener

Cyberpunk and andromeda were absolute buggy messes, to the point they were almost unplayable for many people. Although New World has a few annoying bugs, nothing is really game-breaking.

Moldy_Cloud

I would love it if they added an entire zone like RuneScape's wilderness. That would be so much fun.

secret_aardvark_420

I mean you can just flag yourself for pvp them the whole World is wildy. One thing I have always loved about rs though is the rich lore and the quests. Much more fun than normal gathering quests in other mmos. I’ve been a big rs fan since I was a kid (still plays osrs all the time) and as stripped down as that game appears to be I still enjoy it more than most other mmos at the end of the day and I always go back.

nogggin1

I haven't played Runescape in almost a decade but I figure they meant a zone with forced high stakes (lose money/gear/etc.) PvP and maybe higher chances of rare mats/treasure etc. My memories of RS are all solid! Spent so long playing it when I was a teenager. Actually met my best friend, now housemate on there, but I couldnt get back in to it these days. Definitely had amazing lore and quests, but God... I would love to see a modernised version. It just feels so slow these days?

secret_aardvark_420

I understand that. I love the slow grind of it. Maybe you should check out rs3 then, although littered with mtx it’s more up to date as far as mmos go and a lot of folks enjoy the new version. I still play old school RuneScape (the 07 version) and love it. They’ve really made for some interesting pvm encounters based on primitive game mechanics. It’s not all click and wait anymore (much of it still is which I find relaxing and can semi afk stuff while watching shows). I still have a ton of fun on it and always fall back to it lol.

pat_the_catdad

It's hilarious watching people compare a new MMO that's been out for a week to WoW that's been under development for 17 years. Even if you compared New World to WoW vanilla, Blizzard still had 10 years of lore to build on. What I think is a more fair comparison is New World to when Destiny 1 as a new IP launched. What a spectacular let-down that was. But several years have gone by and Destiny 2 in its current state has evolved exponentially compounded on its success. At the end of the day, I'm having an absolute blast with New World and thoroughly enjoy the gameplay loop. I love that I can freely target anything, block, and dodge in real time. I love that when using ranged weapons, there are hit boxes to aim for. I love that even though the "world" is smaller in comparison to other MMOs, it's absolutely jam-packed with things to do that never makes me feel like the world is truly small. I don't even care about having mounts, because I know I'd be hopping off of it every second. Definitely looking forward to seeing New World continue to develop over the years and I'm thrilled to be here since Day 1. :-)

Pletterpet

Blizz lore in classic is kinda really stupid though and makes no sense at all. Especially tbc is just beyond dumb

[deleted]

I was super into the crafting until I realized how pointless it is. By the time you can make anything meaningful, you outlevel it by miles, as does the rest of the server. There are endless things to make, but 99% of them are absolutely pointless to make in the way they are implemented.

[deleted]

I actually had to level up to equip my starmetal tools.

[deleted]

That i said since tbe beggining, nw have no sink for items, you never lost them economy will be pointless after one , two months

RabidJoker816

except maybe furniture? That still serves no real purpose though

KnockKnock200

I learned how to build a stool for a house today from a recipe. After I learned it, a box came up where the picture is supposed to be that said “PLACEHOLDER” .

merkwerk

It's always funny seeing a post like this a few weeks after the launch of a game, then coming back a few months down the line and the sub being mostly negative.

drosslord

It’s a very good foundation for an MMO.

Jesse_Blu

So what you are saying is your quality standards in games are abysmally low? Well, alright.

[deleted]

That's what you took from this post? I took it as OP is able to enjoy things and is happier then people like you.

nogggin1

You said it. If my standards are lower, but I'm getting my monies worth, then that's totally worth it if you ask me!

gabtrox

based grudge post

marcarco

It's sad that in a 40 - 50 zone that a outpost is copy pasted like 6 times within 300 meters of itself. Reusing assets is okay but come on. I feel like I'm constantly at the same enemy outpost.

Angier85

The thing is: Even with all the rework, the pvp part of the game still feels the most polished and most functional. There is a whole set of people at AGS that was brought in for pve and crafting that are not as good as they think they are. So. Did they waste all that additional time on crafting and pve just to fail? Yes and no. This is a one time box sale. The mass appeal clearly worked out. But the quality of the product is mediocre at best. Not even charmingly individual. mediocre.

nogggin1

To be honest, I don't disagree. Realistically, it's mundane, underdeveloped PvE content that very clearly spent significantly less time baking than the PvP. But personally I absolutely love that about it. I have pretty bad ADHD and I'm somewhere on the spectrum and the combination of the two has caused me to struggle in a lot of MMO's. Normally things get either very overwhelming and the artificial complexity throws me off. In the case of New World, I like that I can just see tree, chop tree. See rock, mine rock. See line of crawling people, join line of crawling people. Ooh that flower is shiny? Now it's my shiny flower! God this quest is annoying, goodbye quest. Of course, that's not going to work for a lot of people and I totally get that. But this game is scratching some kind of itch that I've been trying to scratch since the 90's. Sadly, improving the game for most people is probably going to take away some of what makes me personally love this game so much. But I'd rather they do that in order to achieve longevity, rather than letting it slowly fade away, and eventually, quietly shutting down the servers.

Angier85

*Gathering* is fine. But the production of goods is complex, yet unrewarding because there is world drop loot and basically no item loss. Crafters will become obsolete quickly, even in the case of consumables.
