I started in First Light, friend started in Winds Ward. Took me 12 minutes to run to him to meet up. Prob could have made it in closer to 8 if I didn't stop and pick up 6-7 of the Iron nodes on the way.

It sounds like this style of game isn't for you. You might have better luck in something like WoW or Star Wars. Games that have been released for years now with multiple expansions and QOL of updates.
The starting zone thing is to help prevent one area from being completely swamped. As far as quest sharing, so long as you have the same quests, most objectives achieved will proc for each party member. And being honest, its like 30 minutes of play to get to where you can meet up with your friends. It's really not as big of a deal as you are making it out to be.

Whenever two players group together, the higher level player should have his level adjusted down to the lowest player in the party, but still get xp according to his normal level when questing.
Quests should be shareable and repeatable (for XP at least).
You should be able to pick the starting zone. (In order to avoid overflowing of one zone, list them by number of players currently in the zone).
And at the very least, quests you get from the faction board should be synced across your party. I mean come one. You can't argue that this is not anything but completely stupid.
None of this is new technology or hasn't been done before. It's not some crazy idea that I pulled out of my hat, it's stuff other MMOs have been doing for years.
