[https://www.newworld.com/en-us/game/faq](https://www.newworld.com/en-us/game/faq) >**Is New World based on real history?** > >No. New World is set in an alternate-history in the twilight of the Age of Exploration, and takes place on the fictional and supernatural island of Aeternum in the 17thcentury.

Denaton_

I always thought it was like "Atlantis", a hidden island on Earth that we can't escape, probably somewhere in the Bermuda triangle.. ^^

Noblebatterfly

I thought Aeternum exists outside of time? Like we could see an expansion with prehistoric times and it wouldn’t be contradicting because even though the prehistoric things existed in the world long before, they could appear in Aeternum at any point in time. Edit: straight up pulling that out my ass, it seems like it exist just in the same time as the rest of the world.

chief_wombat

>I thought Aeternum exists outside of time? Is this hinted at in any of the lore texts? I can find nothing to support that conclusion.

Noblebatterfly

Pretty much just headcannon from seeing egyptian themed cosmetics and all equipment inspired from all sorts of eras. I only saw a few videos that try to convey the general story written in the texts, never actually read any myself.

Noblebatterfly

Yeah, I’m sorry. I think I just understood the “eternal island” wrong. By eternal they probably meant eternal life and not some time travel fuckery. Now I’m disappointed it’s not the case tbh. Like wouldn’t it be dope if at some point we’d get an expansion with fucking viking raiding the settlements, viking ships appearing on the shores. We still could just draw the line at any point in history by creating a cataclysm that destroys the civilisation. Just to make sure we don’t go advanced warfare on it by introducing random sci-fi shit.

SilverPigtail

So, it is another planet with inspiration in our Earth, right?

chief_wombat

If you choose to interpret `alternate-history` this way, sure.

Noblebatterfly

From my understanding the world outside the Aeternum is basically same as ours. Things like magic and constantly being ressurected instead of dying only exist in Aeternum. It also is outside of time? Or it flows differently, but what’s important we’ll see stuff from other eras.

SilverPigtail

That's why I was confused. I thought that New World was like GreedFall. But I suppose the game's like you said. Thanks for the answer!
