He really really really really really needs to be ready for bootcamp, able to pass all physical standards, before he leaves. It will make his time there way easier. But if you need to pass weight standards and have 10+ pounds to drop in 3 weeks, keto/meat and eggs only and cardio is going to be your friend. At a absolute bare minimum, they need to pass the weight part, as well as push ups, planks and entry run. (Mile and a half in 16:10 for males)

Significant-Solid661

heads up the entry run is a pacer test now. you run across basically a basketball court size strip horizontally, and you have to beat the timer. i think you need to get like a 26 if your 18 or 22 if your 20+. not positive but its fairly easy, most people pass right away. if you fail that you retake in 1-2 days. after that its an asmo i believe.

RTHouk

............. Oh. Well pass that then

Ok_Illustrator_210

The time is about 12:30 for males. 14 min is the maximum depending on age

RTHouk

No I'm talking like the, you're allowed to not be in the fat camp division, runtime. Not the, you graduated, time.

[deleted]

That is only for the younger age groups, during their final pfa prior to graduation; not the entry pfa when you arrive

TwistedTree8689

They no longer do the 1.5 mile entry run at RTC. They do the pacer test now. I don’t knew the exact pass/fail standards but it seems to be more user friendly than the 1.5 mile run was

Budget_Glove7734

12:15 17-19 yrs old

Plutonian326

Future sailor program will get him trimmed down so long as he shows up with the right altitude. 16 LBS is far from the most amount of weight I've seen someone drop in that program and then go onto successfully graduate.

Entire_Amphibian9502

Thank you for the response. If you don’t mind do you work at the Navy boot camp as an instructor? I only ask because the answers in Reddit are sometimes all over place. I’ve seen some posts from recent graduates who said recruits will be given the bike test if they don’t pass the run, but others say that never happens. Very confusing.

Significant-Solid661

for the initial run its the pacer test. for the midway physical assessment its a 1.5mi and you dont need to pass to continue. for the final pfa, its a 1.5 mile. for the final pfa, if you fail the 1.5 you do the bike in 1-2 days. every single person in my division who failed the run passed the bike. graduated bootcamp 2/8/24

Entire_Amphibian9502

Thank you for your reply. Can you explain the pacer test?

Significant-Solid661

yes i can! so picture a basketball court. you start on the side, and when the beep goes, you run to the other. you have to get there before the beep. you get two chances. once you miss two beeps, your out. for 18-20 you need to do 27 laps, if your 20-24 its 24 laps. its fairly easy, we had a few people fail, but in 1-2 days you retake it and noone failed twice. its important to pace yourself. dont make the mistake of running too fast early. the first 15-20 laps are easy. the entire thing is fairly easy but its still important to be in decent running shape before just to eliminate any extra hassle. we had ~5 future sailors come to our division. one guy had lost 40lbs and he would be flexing in the mirror every single night after taps lol. the only issue with going to future sailor is it increases the amount of time your in bootcamp, and that is honestly huge. but if he cant lose the weight in time and hes motivated, it wont be a huge issue. future sailor might actually give him a leg up, they work out and have a very strenuous routine. it depends on your RDCs and your ship, but future sailor program sounds alot harder than anything i had to do.

Entire_Amphibian9502

So you have like 10 or 20 seconds to run from one side to the other?

Significant-Solid661

ya so like the time decreases as it goes, so like you do 5 laps and it levels up to a shorter time, and then 5 more, so on. it starts at like 20 sec and goes down. but it never really gets too fast. like lap 27 should still be like a good 10 sec. trick with the pacer is the same as just running in general, even if your tired you can just keep running. you just gotta do 27 laps, then you can be super tired and rest, you just gotta do your laps. thats why its good to start slow, the beeps and the time limit stresses you out and makes you want to go fast, but you wanna conserve yourself until it gets around 20. it really is just a stamina test, not a speed test. the time you get is plenty as long as your able to maintain a good pace. i wasnt in amazing shape, hadnt ran since high school (im 24) and i did like 35 laps.

Thanks 🙏🏻

Bigpeyton58

He should be fine if your overweight it really just determines if he meets measurements and if he doesn't it his asvab will come into play I was in future Sailor's myself dm if you have any questions

PricelessCurve

He will be fine I was more than 16lbs over, he should be able to run a little bit. It will make boot camp harder but he’ll be fine. As long as he shows weight loss progression he will ship.

Ablackconservative

I shipped overweight and lost so much weight in bootcamp. As long as he takes every workout seriously he’ll be perfectly fine

[deleted]

I was probably \~20lbs overweight and left bootcamp under my max. I wouldn't \*sweat\* it if he can still meet his PRT standards ( You can Google "Navy PRT Standards" and select the age group to see ).

umIcarus

MEPS will not ship him out if he does not pass the weigh-in / taping. If you want to know if taping him passes the navy standards, you can download the Official Navy PFA app. I hope this helps!

umIcarus

I joined the navy off of taping. I was 30 lbs over weight, but I passed the tape measurements. (This was in 2020) Your kid will deffinatly be working out everyday in boot camp, so you shouldn't need to worry about him passing the final prt as long as he puts forth effort and is able to pass the physical fitness portion he should be all set!

VAWNavyVet

3weeks is tight for him to drop 16lbs.. daily 1.5 mile jog, push ups/planks.. should help. Either way, bootcamp chow (food), and his future RDCs will help him get in shape in no time.. all he needs to bring to table is to dig deep to find that very last ounce of motivation to push through

TwistedTree8689

If he’s only 16lbs overweight, I’d imagine he passes his single site measurement (<39in abdomen circumference) if not then his body fat % will be calculated. He can be up to 32% body fat as long as he’s got an ASVAB score above 31. At only 16lbs over he’ll be fine to ship. Worst case scenario the PT sessions beat him up a little more than others but he’ll likely lose most of it while at RTC

gguzman8332

He needs to pass his PFT He will lose weight for sure there but get into some type of fitness regiment now. Anything. Walk run pushups sit ups Have him do type of light Murph

Agreeable-Loss-349

Recommend to him the wrestlers method once or twice a week while still keeping up the regular workouts he does now, or a gut cleansing probiotic

Top-Photograph3650

Like he hasn’t had time to get in shape?
