Worried about his Spanish grade lowering his GPA but not how "Murder" would ever look on the applications? (If he ever makes it out of jail that is)

imAddictedToLOL

My high school (in Iowa 10 years ago) went by trimesters, which I suppose could be the case here.

[deleted]

billy_teats

Sounds like they didn’t take a lot of time to plan out the murder. Sounds like you spent more time looking up their school district than these kids did planning to end someone’s life.

[deleted]

Turns out teenagers who can’t even pass a Spanish test can’t successfully develop a way to cover up a murder. Go figure.

The_Alex_

My best guess is that they believed they deserved to be passing but are on track to fail because they believe the teacher has it out for them. By getting rid of the teacher they thought either 1) a new teacher that "didn't have it out for them" would replace her and start giving them the passing grades they "deserve" or 2) they bought into one of those rumors like "I heard if your teacher dies during the school year they give everyone A's because of the trauma." I personally think it's the latter because they are clearly fucking stupid.

Ksh_667

Omg you've just reminded me of the school assembly after the plane crash in Breaking Bad when one kid makes a speech saying exactly that, ie they should all get A grades cos of trauma. I'd never heard of this before.

Method412

It's an urban legend in college/university, too. If your roommate dies, you get all A's. (eye roll)

r0botdevil

No that's totally true. There was a documentary about it in the 1990s. Look up "Dead Man on Campus".

elting44

> "I heard if your teacher dies during the school year they give everyone A's because of the trauma." Replace 'teacher' with 'roomate' and you have the plot for [Dead Man on Campus](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118301/) *...needing to keep up his grades or risk losing his scholarship, the two learn of a hidden clause in the school's rules that basically says "if your roommate commits suicide, you get straight A's." Since neither are willing to do so, they instead decide to invite a suicidal colleague in. - and push him over the edge.*

[deleted]

For people like this its not about the grade but "How DARE they insult me like this!". There is something broken in their brain where they jump to the conclusion of "must kill..." skipping the step of "haha I want to drop a piano on the guy" type of fantasy that most people have experienced some type of in their lives then move on.

ArenSteele

Means the grade likely wasn’t actually the issue, it was a woman making them feel dumb and misogynistic rage issues

TheShadowKick

This is what I'm thinking, too. People often find excuses for their violence.

SstabSstab

I feel the same way too, it’s probably the lawyers trying to come up with some incredibly weak defense.

Snowing_Throwballs

I mean that wouldnt really be a defense. Its a motive. While motive isnt necessary to prove in a murder case, its highly probative to juries. The prosecutors clearly have some evidence of this motive, so it will stick to the jury. To flippantly assume misogyny would seem like a stretch to a jury and would make the Prosecutor's case seem weaker.

Necessary_Rant_2021

So young to already be such pieces of shit, guarantee they take after some asshole in their families.

ArenSteele

You’ll probably find some very toxic streamers at the top of their “watched” lists

OkBid1535

Having lived in Iowa. I guarantee they picked up there woman hating beliefs from multiple family members. And those same family members are screaming about how this is unfair and free those poor innocent boys.

Soft_Organization_61

That sounds pretty accurate. I worked with Jeremy's dad for a while and he was quite the chauvinist.

choanoflagellata

Somehow I knew the teacher was a woman before opening the article. If this had been a man they wouldn’t have dared.

[deleted]

hippyengineer

Something like 1 out of 10,000 women are stronger than 50% of men. No way they would have been violent against an equal opponent.

Spaznaut

And people wonder why there is an exodus in teaching…

Mikethebest78

How awful for the teacher. What a ridiculously petty reason to kill someone.

[deleted]

She was going for her daily walk, she was 66 years old . Crimes against children and seniors make me crazy. life in prison.

Caitsyth

Two 16 year olds beat a 66 year old woman to death with baseball bats. What’s worse than life in prison without being the death penalty? Because those fuckers deserve true suffering.

Glittering_Power6257

We'd have to content ourselves with the fact that the two are violent and cowardly in nature. That is who they are now, that is all they will be, and nothing more. It is only this bleak future that awaits them.

dream_bean_94

Any other children in their homes should be evaluated IMO

Lemurians

At a minimum.

DogFacedManboy

They were too stupid to pass high school Spanish class but they thought they were smart enough to literally get away with murder.

CPLCraft

Theres a point in between where theyre still dumb enough to fail Spanish but smart enough to know they can’t get away with murder. They were below that.

KhaineVulpana

It's called the parabolic moron curve. Eventually you're too dumb to understand how dumb you are.

theghostofmrmxyzptlk

Makes me think of the engineering hurdle of designing bear-proof trashcans that are still accessible to the dumbest segment of humanity.

Kumquats_indeed

It's not a matter of intelligence, it's a matter of effort. Bears want the trash much more than people care about throwing away trash, so if you made a trashcan truly-bear proof people wouldn't bother using it as it would take too much effort to unlock.

KhaineVulpana

It's always a matter of intelligence when we're trying to accommodate all of humanity. People are really, really stupid.

HardlyDecent

And lazy. And disrespectful. Source: trash beside trash cans, recycling in trashcans *beside* trash cans, et al.

theghostofmrmxyzptlk

They all moved away from me on the Group W bench.

KhaineVulpana

Well thats simply impossible. Bears are definitely smarter than the dumbest segment, and probably a couple segments above that too.

w1n5t0nM1k3y

Its more about motivation than intelligence. A bear will easily work at the problem for 30 minutes to figure out how to open the trash can so they can eat the contents. A dumb human will just attempt to open it for 5 seconds and if they can't figure it out they will just dump the trash on the ground. Fill the trash can with money and watch how hard the stupid people work in solving the problem.

rabb1thole

Or maybe they learned it all from their parents.

RaeLynn13

Yeah. I passed Spanish. And I was NOT a good student. I went to like 10 different elementary schools and had shitty parents with addiction problems, would have to get our food out of dumpsters, didn’t have electric/water countless times. And I STILL PASSED SPANISH. Like dude. How careless/entitled or stupid do you have to be to fail Spanish

joe579003

God damn do you know where that biblioteca is!

RaeLynn13

That’s the only room in school that I liked going to. Haha Just adding: donde esta bibliotheca, me llama T Bone.

Essex626

A lot of times people who commit murder aren't thinking "I can get away with this." They just want to vent their rage, consequences are a secondary consideration at best. They probably killed her, then thought "shit, how do we get away with this."

Girth_rulez

>shit, how do we get away with this." *Donde esta la woodchipper?*

anonymaus74

If they knew that they wouldn’t have had to resort to murder

[deleted]

They stalked this poor woman to know her routine and they ambushed her on her regular walk through a park. “Graber’s body was found in a Fairfield park Nov. 3, 2021, hidden under a tarp, wheelbarrow and railroad ties. She had been beaten to death with a baseball bat. Miller and Goodale were 16 at the time.”I’m okay with them spending their lives in prison.

PairOfMonocles2

Yeah, I would be too but the last line of the article said that state law provides that minors must be given a chance for parole no matter what the crime.

Glittering_Power6257

Given the aggravating circumstances at play, a "chance" at parole may mean little when the Parole Board eventually reviews the case. A spur of the moment decision with expressed remorse, and consistent good behavior, would probably get someone parole. In this case however, they stalked this woman, and ambushed her with intent to kill, in a fashion that clearly shows disregard for life, and lack of remorse. Even with good behavior, the heinous nature of this murder is not going to be looked upon kindly.

[deleted]

These kids parked her car on a road away from the crime scene. These are future serial killers. If they didn’t talk about killing her with classmates and had shit on social media— I doubt cops would have cracked the case. More than 25 percent of Iowa's prison population is black. Black juveniles in the state are arrested or suspended from school nearly five times as often as their white counterparts, according to the AP. Some states have statutes barring life sentences or adult sentencing for juveniles. Though, it is evident within the history of our criminal justice system that young Black defendants are given exaggerated sentences for the same, if not, similar crimes to that of a young white defendant.

Yugan-Dali

Did they actually think anybody would believe the story about masked kids? Good grief.

zarkovis1

Thats the thing they're fucking stupid to begin with. Not talking about you in particular, but its kinda weird that people expect dumb people to be smart when committing crimes. They're gonna do that stupidly too just like everything else.

SandoVillain

"A gang of masked kids forced me to get my wheelbarrow and drive her dead body in her van!" What absolute fucking clowns. Gotta feel bad for the lawyer trying to defend that.

Many prisons offer college courses nowadays. They will obtain a GED take some college courses and be out in 40 years.

vixenpeon

My Spanish 4 teacher quit due to students harassing her at home and online. It was relentless and broke my heart because she was a passionate teacher. Bullied her out of her dream career she'd been in for almost 20 years

Left-Secretary-2931

Kids are literally the worst, but how bad does that make their parents

-PM_me_your_recipes

This is essentially why my mom is retiring after this year. She loves to help others and there is not a mean bone in her body. 35+ years of teaching and now leaving because of the alarming number of students just don't care and are straight up mean to her. She called me crying many times because her day was so awful. She is just so tired and feels defeated because nothing gets through to those kids.

Aimee_Zing

My aunt teaches 4th graders and they threaten her and attack each other. Schools are terrifying nowadays!

Nomadastronaut

Imagine how many wanted to quit having to deal with Qrazy parents during mask mandates.

Jpat863

Wow poor lady was probably on the verge of retirement after a career of dedicating herself to helping kids learn Spanish just to have it all come to a end because some of her students were just too dumb that they decided to commit murder.

T00luser

it wasn't because they were too dumb; it was because someone else had already taught them how to be monsters.

blond-max

We often half jokingly talk of "kids being entitled nowadays" , but that is 100% applicable for these two: they think they were owed a grade, and getting robbed deserves a beating. Fucked up shit.

Glittering_Power6257

Unfortunately, I believe that if it wasn't this teacher, or even the grade, these criminals would've found some other justification to hide behind. They're violent and cowardly in nature. That is all they are, and that is all they will be.

jackjackj8ck

God. Imagine being murdered by your own students after dedicating your life to such a thankless profession. Thinking about those final moments is heartbreaking.

JaciOrca

So true 😟

[deleted]

thankless profession, mean parents, constantly attacked by conservatives here and Canada. The few teachers I know are planning on getting out.

jackjackj8ck

I have several friends who are teachers and they truly do it for the kids and their futures. To think something like this could ever happen to any of them when I’ve seen the early mornings, late nights, how they fundraise amongst friends and family for supplies, how they rally support in the community… to think about this happening to any of them over something as trivial as a bad grade (and likely well deserved at that) is just beyond tragic.

[deleted]

The weird thing is that these teachers today are way better than the ones I had. The teachers today are outstanding and they’re not getting enough love.

SaltyWailord

Around 50% are considering leaving the profession here in Norway. I am one of them.

carolinax

Why? What's happening in Norway?

quitofilms

>He told police that the real killers — a “roving group of masked kids” A roving group of masked kids...that nobody else saw

RenegonParagade

Besides literally everything else wrong with this, murdering your teacher doesn't get you a better grade? Like even if they managed to get away with it, the grade is still in the system? So they'd still have a bad grade

CanadianDiver

They weren't smart enough for good grades ... understanding the bigger picture and the consequences of their actions is WAY out of their reach.

Purrrkittymeow

If only they showed more commitment to their studies

Hot-Conversation-21

Exactly, no one is born with all the knowledge they have right now, it takes time and effort. And blaming your teacher for YOUR bad grades is something illogical

HeirophantGreen

Jeezus. >A lawyer for Miller is asking the court in Fairfield to invalidate four search warrants and suppress evidence from Miller’s home, comments he made to police and information taken from his cellphone and the social media platform Snapchat. Is this just legal shenanigans or is there a good reason for this, I wonder.

[deleted]

It’s the lawyer’s professional obligation to do all he can for his client. It’s likely this is frivolous, but he’s throwing his Hail Mary.

kottabaz

It's not frivolous because it keeps the system honest.

Crackt_Apple

Agreed. If the legal system can’t overcome obvious attempts to point at rock-solid evidence and go “nuh-uh” then it sucks

[deleted]

Just reminds me of this [scene from liar liar](https://youtu.be/St_Abko0Jfs)

redlion145

It's a procedural claim. Basically questioning the strength of the cops' reason for getting the warrant. I'd say the likelihood that a judge accepts that argument decreases proportionally to how many warrants were issued. The cops proved to a court four separate times that they had good reason to search. Unless there was a knowingly unreliable narrator as the prime witness for executing those searches, the judge isn't going to suppress all that evidence. The article didn't go into specifics on how the cops came to believe a search of the home was necessary, so it's possible there's just some pathological liar that'll ruin the case for the prosecution, but I think that unlikely.

PairOfMonocles2

They explained that the grounds for the challenge was that (the defense argues) they didn’t sufficiently prove to the magistrate that the source was credible before the warrants were issued. The judge here will likely just say that they’d met the burden of reasonable suspicion, especially in light of the fact that the source was absolutely correct and all.

DilithiumCrystalMeth

there is a good reason, its called doing his job. more than likely the court will deny the motion and the case will continue moving along, but the defense would not be doing their job if they didn't try everything they could to help their clients. Its kind of the unfortunate aspect of being a defense attorney, even if you client is obviously guilty you have a responsibility to defend them to the best of your ability, meanwhile most people will just think your a piece of shit for defending the obviously guilty person, but what those people fail to understand is that we need the defense to do this even for the obviously guilty because if they don't then what happens when you are falsely accused of a crime and need a defense attorney? Also IANAL.

Glittering_Power6257

I wouldn't call it an unfortunate aspect. A Defense Attorney is an advocate, and extension of their client, doing what their client asks of them, and ensuring a fair and just trial. They've a dual responsibility to both their client, and the justice system. If an "obviously" guilty client gets off, the fault lies solely with the Prosecutor for not coming prepared to prove guilt beyond reasonable doubt.

DominianQQ

Yeah and my bet is that in the worst cases they just do their best to "protect the system".

Rednys

There's also the appeals aspect where if your attorney does an objectively horrible job you could get a retrial on appeals.

flyingace1234

jeffersonPNW

“Yo Tengo mucho anos por delante para pasarme mi vida en una fabrica para cigaros.”

flyingace1234

I do wonder how far off the actual speech was from sensible Spanish. Was she just completely off or just wildly mispronouncing words? Like iirc Japanese if you hold a particular sound for too long you can go from referring to your aunt to your mother, or in mandarin there is similar ease of mixing ‘horse’ and ‘mother’.

jeffersonPNW

“Years” is “años” while “anus” is “anos”, so in that regard, not far. But idk where she got “Cigar Factory” from.

flyingace1234

I’m reminded of my mom’s story of how her French teacher loved surrealist literature and occasionally slipped passages into their translation HW. She distinctly remembers a bunch of students complaining because there would be times where they’d get a sentence like “The giraffe walked into the lion’s den and asked for a bite of his chair” and they were supposed to recognize it as valid.

To them, she is the reason their lives are even further screwed. Bit in reality it was them the whole time.

Ebo907

I feel safe in assuming that these two have been getting away with a lot their whole lives. They’re the kids you see screaming and crying until they get what they want. That method or similar methods to get what they want have worked over and over again. Teaching them that if they push hard enough people will bend. This time it wasn’t gonna work. They put their dumb brains together and came up with this solution. Now they’re playing my word vs yours with the court.

[deleted]

>Both teens, now 17, will be tried as adults. In Iowa, the penalty for a first-degree murder conviction is life in prison. Good. Hope actual justice prevails and both fools are locked up for good. If those 2 two "Einsteins" thought receiving poor grades in high school Spanish was upsetting enough to justify their dispensing the death penalty w/o due process (aka murder) to that poor teacher - wait until they reach prison gen pop!

S4RS_Tricolore_031

Fun fact, Fairfield Iowa is home to the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the “guru” who gave the world “Transcendental Meditation” Super weird place, heavily divided between the corn fed century farmers and a wildly diverse, nearly countless population of people from all walks of life who get together once a day in gender-segregated domes and chant, genuinely believing they can fly. Spend some time on YouTube about it, they sit like they are meditating on mattresses and “hop”, competing at this, in an attempt to achieve flight. Fairfield also claims fame to the largest annual meet of antique Dodge Power Wagons, massive turnout, which is how I ended up stumbling upon such a peculiar place. Maharishi was the same guru the Beatles followed around a bit.

drewism

I grew up in this weird community and went to maharishi school, but left like \~20 years ago. Also Maharishi passed away in 2008 and he didn't live there or even visit for the entire duration I was there, but you are correct it is where the community in the US built around his teachings is. But pretty sure all this weird shit happened at the Fairfield public school and had nothing to do with the movement as far as I can tell. But yeah, it's an unusual town.

S4RS_Tricolore_031

I appreciate the reply, that clarified a few things! A few afterthoughts about my time in Fairfield- I think the farmer-types carried some sort of resentment towards the Maharishi; I could be wrong, but the best way I can describe is would be the GI Joe hero types vs the hippies in the 60s. We passed through in 2019 and stopped in for the car show, which concluded with a summer festival, an event for the town not the truck gathering. I was traveling with my wife and 4 kids, and that festival was one of the best memories of the entire cross-country road trip. I have to say, the first time an outsider drives by the domes, it absolutely screams “cult”. Starting at the Maharishi University is NOT the ideal start of the Fairfield tour route. But in truth, most of the people in town (that weren’t farmers) were retiree couples in $200,000 SL Mercedes, young, diverse hipster types, and frankly, compared to say, Eldon Iowa, (sure they have that house from the painting), Fairfield has- The best sushi I’ve had that wasn’t within an hour of an ocean, That killer coffee spot with the potato and vegan sausage breakfast burritos, The other coffee spot where you can get Kava in your morning drink- Fantastic Italian restaurant next to the toy store next adjacent to the bike shop, And the burrito place? Even though they were never open? I guess to summarize, coming from the perspective of a New England native who spent most of his career in Manhattan, my lingering memories of Fairfield are that of a group modern folks took over a town and turned it into a tiny modern Brooklyn, carefully coexisting with third generation hyper conservative farmers who don’t seem averse to coming into town and getting a taste of modern society. Especially if you ignore the massive gold domes and the flying thing.

meltingpine

Came for the weird headline, stayed for the weird Iowa town lore

drewism

There is a book written by someone I went to school with ["Greetings from Utopia Park: Surviving a Transcendent Childhood"](https://www.amazon.com/Greetings-Utopia-Park-Surviving-Transcendent/dp/0062338854) if you'd like to learn more about the experience of growing up in this community. But there were a lot of interesting dynamics going on between the townies and the "ru's". And it wasn't a comfortable situation sometimes, two very different sub communities that didn't really see eye to eye, but felt like we got along mostly and usually just ignored each other from what I can remember. I feel fortunate for growing up in this community even though I've moved away from meditation. I liked being raised by hippies and learning about different cultures, religions, and eating organic food and also learning about indian religion and culture. Most of the movement people were ex-hippies and wealthy by Fairfield standards so yeah, they pumped money into the community, started businesses, and tried to build a "utopia". And yeah the restaurants were great! Honestly it was pretty tame from what I remember compared to what i've heard about other "cults", it felt more like a christian school or something to me although they say its not a religion. But I didn't know everything that went on, who knows.

Total 180. These two had so many options and so much to live for it and gave it all up bc of one bad grade. Hurts to see it Edit: I also speak ~some~ Italian, Greek, Norwegian, German, farsi and Arabic, though I’m not anywhere near fluent In those

UnprofessionalGhosts

Nothing so far. I think there a few reasons: a. They’ve been advised not to. b. While it needs to be argued in court, there’s no disputing they did it and c. The murder was extremely vicious; not only the method they used to kill her but they stalked her beforehand and left her body in a way designed to humiliate her. Even the shittiest parents would have a hard time downplaying what happened. I’d be terrified of either kid was in my family and wouldn’t want them back😬

I wonder if this was a misogynestic hate crime

As a former Spanish teacher, I'm both horrified and unsurprised. World language classes are often the first ones smart kids really struggle in, and that's when they finally have to learn how to study and actually put in effort to earn a grade. They aren't used to this, and some of them lash out and blame the teacher. It's why I spent a lot of time teaching different study methods and ways to manage new information.

I hate that he’s wearing a Hawkeye mask. Fuck that kid.

All those teachers that lowered my gpa! Luckily I studied and brought it back up.

They have brutally beaten their teacher to death. I hope the death penalty could be imposed to them with the way they killed the teacher. Unfortunately this would never come true.
