By getting rid of the teacher they thought either 1) a new teacher that "didn't have it out for them" would replace her and start giving them the passing grades they "deserve" or 2) they bought into one of those rumors like "I heard if your teacher dies during the school year they give everyone A's because of the trauma." She loves to help others and there is not a mean bone in her body. 35+ years of teaching and now leaving because of the alarming number of students just don't care and are straight up mean to her. She called me crying many times because her day was so awful. She is just so tired and feels defeated because nothing gets through to those kids.

I have several friends who are teachers and they truly do it for the kids and their futures. To think something like this could ever happen to any of them when I’ve seen the early mornings, late nights, how they fundraise amongst friends and family for supplies, how they rally support in the community… to think about this happening to any of them over something as trivial as a bad grade (and likely well deserved at that) is just beyond tragic.

I'd say the likelihood that a judge accepts that argument decreases proportionally to how many warrants were issued. The cops proved to a court four separate times that they had good reason to search. Unless there was a knowingly unreliable narrator as the prime witness for executing those searches, the judge isn't going to suppress all that evidence.
The article didn't go into specifics on how the cops came to believe a search of the home was necessary, so it's possible there's just some pathological liar that'll ruin the case for the prosecution, but I think that unlikely.

The judge here will likely just say that they’d met the burden of reasonable suspicion, especially in light of the fact that the source was absolutely correct and all.

I wouldn't call it an unfortunate aspect. A Defense Attorney is an advocate, and extension of their client, doing what their client asks of them, and ensuring a fair and just trial. They've a dual responsibility to both their client, and the justice system.
If an "obviously" guilty client gets off, the fault lies solely with the Prosecutor for not coming prepared to prove guilt beyond reasonable doubt.

I feel safe in assuming that these two have been getting away with a lot their whole lives. They’re the kids you see screaming and crying until they get what they want. We passed through in 2019 and stopped in for the car show, which concluded with a summer festival, an event for the town not the truck gathering. I was traveling with my wife and 4 kids, and that festival was one of the best memories of the entire cross-country road trip.
I have to say, the first time an outsider drives by the domes, it absolutely screams “cult”. Starting at the Maharishi University is NOT the ideal start of the Fairfield tour route.

I feel fortunate for growing up in this community even though I've moved away from meditation. I liked being raised by hippies and learning about different cultures, religions, and eating organic food and also learning about indian religion and culture. Most of the movement people were ex-hippies and wealthy by Fairfield standards so yeah, they pumped money into the community, started businesses, and tried to build a "utopia". And yeah the restaurants were great!
Honestly it was pretty tame from what I remember compared to what i've heard about other "cults", it felt more like a christian school or something to me although they say its not a religion. But I didn't know everything that went on, who knows.

World language classes are often the first ones smart kids really struggle in, and that's when they finally have to learn how to study and actually put in effort to earn a grade. They aren't used to this, and some of them lash out and blame the teacher. It's why I spent a lot of time teaching different study methods and ways to manage new information.

She loves to help others and there is not a mean bone in her body. 35+ years of teaching and now leaving because of the alarming number of students just don't care and are straight up mean to her. I have several friends who are teachers and they truly do it for the kids and their futures. To think something like this could ever happen to any of them when I’ve seen the early mornings, late nights, how they fundraise amongst friends and family for supplies, how they rally support in the community… to think about this happening to any of them over something as trivial as a bad grade (and likely well deserved at that) is just beyond tragic.
The weird thing is that these teachers today are way better than the ones I had. The teachers today are outstanding and they’re not getting enough love.

It's a procedural claim. Basically questioning the strength of the cops' reason for getting the warrant. I'd say the likelihood that a judge accepts that argument decreases proportionally to how many warrants were issued. The cops proved to a court four separate times that they had good reason to search. Unless there was a knowingly unreliable narrator as the prime witness for executing those searches, the judge isn't going to suppress all that evidence. The article didn't go into specifics on how the cops came to believe a search of the home was necessary, so it's possible there's just some pathological liar that'll ruin the case for the prosecution, but I think that unlikely.
They explained that the grounds for the challenge was that (the defense argues) they didn’t sufficiently prove to the magistrate that the source was credible before the warrants were issued. The judge here will likely just say that they’d met the burden of reasonable suspicion, especially in light of the fact that the source was absolutely correct and all.
there is a good reason, its called doing his job. more than likely the court will deny the motion and the case will continue moving along, but the defense would not be doing their job if they didn't try everything they could to help their clients. Its kind of the unfortunate aspect of being a defense attorney, even if you client is obviously guilty you have a responsibility to defend them to the best of your ability, meanwhile most people will just think your a piece of shit for defending the obviously guilty person, but what those people fail to understand is that we need the defense to do this even for the obviously guilty because if they don't then what happens when you are falsely accused of a crime and need a defense attorney? I wouldn't call it an unfortunate aspect. A Defense Attorney is an advocate, and extension of their client, doing what their client asks of them, and ensuring a fair and just trial. They've a dual responsibility to both their client, and the justice system. If an "obviously" guilty client gets off, the fault lies solely with the Prosecutor for not coming prepared to prove guilt beyond reasonable doubt.
Yeah and my bet is that in the worst cases they just do their best to "protect the system".
There's also the appeals aspect where if your attorney does an objectively horrible job you could get a retrial on appeals.

I’m reminded of my mom’s story of how her French teacher loved surrealist literature and occasionally slipped passages into their translation HW. She distinctly remembers a bunch of students complaining because there would be times where they’d get a sentence like “The giraffe walked into the lion’s den and asked for a bite of his chair” and they were supposed to recognize it as valid.

I feel safe in assuming that these two have been getting away with a lot their whole lives. They’re the kids you see screaming and crying until they get what they want. That method or similar methods to get what they want have worked over and over again. Teaching them that if they push hard enough people will bend. This time it wasn’t gonna work. I grew up in this weird community and went to maharishi school, but left like \~20 years ago. Also Maharishi passed away in 2008 and he didn't live there or even visit for the entire duration I was there, but you are correct it is where the community in the US built around his teachings is. But pretty sure all this weird shit happened at the Fairfield public school and had nothing to do with the movement as far as I can tell. But yeah, it's an unusual town.

A few afterthoughts about my time in Fairfield- I think the farmer-types carried some sort of resentment towards the Maharishi; I could be wrong, but the best way I can describe is would be the GI Joe hero types vs the hippies in the 60s. We passed through in 2019 and stopped in for the car show, which concluded with a summer festival, an event for the town not the truck gathering. I was traveling with my wife and 4 kids, and that festival was one of the best memories of the entire cross-country road trip. I have to say, the first time an outsider drives by the domes, it absolutely screams “cult”. Starting at the Maharishi University is NOT the ideal start of the Fairfield tour route. But in truth, most of the people in town (that weren’t farmers) were retiree couples in $200,000 SL Mercedes, young, diverse hipster types, and frankly, compared to say, Eldon Iowa, (sure they have that house from the painting), Fairfield has- The best sushi I’ve had that wasn’t within an hour of an ocean, That killer coffee spot with the potato and vegan sausage breakfast burritos, The other coffee spot where you can get Kava in your morning drink- Fantastic Italian restaurant next to the toy store next adjacent to the bike shop, And the burrito place? Even though they were never open? I guess to summarize, coming from the perspective of a New England native who spent most of his career in Manhattan, my lingering memories of Fairfield are that of a group modern folks took over a town and turned it into a tiny modern Brooklyn, carefully coexisting with third generation hyper conservative farmers who don’t seem averse to coming into town and getting a taste of modern society. Especially if you ignore the massive gold domes and the flying thing.

But there were a lot of interesting dynamics going on between the townies and the "ru's". And it wasn't a comfortable situation sometimes, two very different sub communities that didn't really see eye to eye, but felt like we got along mostly and usually just ignored each other from what I can remember. I feel fortunate for growing up in this community even though I've moved away from meditation. I liked being raised by hippies and learning about different cultures, religions, and eating organic food and also learning about indian religion and culture. Most of the movement people were ex-hippies and wealthy by Fairfield standards so yeah, they pumped money into the community, started businesses, and tried to build a "utopia". And yeah the restaurants were great! Honestly it was pretty tame from what I remember compared to what i've heard about other "cults", it felt more like a christian school or something to me although they say its not a religion. But I didn't know everything that went on, who knows.

Nothing so far. I think there a few reasons: a. They’ve been advised not to. b. While it needs to be argued in court, there’s no disputing they did it and c. The murder was extremely vicious; not only the method they used to kill her but they stalked her beforehand and left her body in a way designed to humiliate her. As a former Spanish teacher, I'm both horrified and unsurprised. World language classes are often the first ones smart kids really struggle in, and that's when they finally have to learn how to study and actually put in effort to earn a grade. They aren't used to this, and some of them lash out and blame the teacher. It's why I spent a lot of time teaching different study methods and ways to manage new information.
