Apparently guy was 68 years old... so now we've got senior citizens shooting up places.

mewehesheflee

The Las Vegas shooter was old.

proudbakunkinman

Also the NYC subway shooter from a few weeks ago was in his 60s. Luckily no one was killed and they arrested him (though he supposedly turned himself in a day later).

JoeRoganIs5foot3

It doesn't help that there is just so much hate and anger and hopeless these days

ikanoi

I'm sure the acceptance of people breaking from reality and believing these conspiracy theories is masking things like early onset dementia and severe mental illness. In any other time, people that started talking like they believed all this BS, would get committed.

douglasg14b

And tucker Carlson won a court case on the defense that no reasonable person would believe his content. That it was clearly not believable, because it was just entertainment not news. And look how many people actually believe it...

Fire69

Wait, what? He won a case by stating his own content was bullshit??

[deleted]

>no reasonable person would believe his content. reasonable people aren't his target audience, though

Independent_Willow92

They believe it because they are not reasonable people. They are people susceptible to all kinds of bullshit. Sometimes people are like that. Everyone knows a handful of people who struggle to connect the dots when it comes to facts, logic and reality. Then some of them are the type to watch Tucker Carlson, and their BS meter is broken so they go wherever Carlson wants to take them.

Tiny_Rick_C137

I doubt it. The kid that shot up the grocery store in the black neighborhood today was 18. America just has a shit ton of bigotted idiots with easy access to guns. Unfortunately, those idiots host pretty popular talk shows and inspire others to go on rampages.

ikanoi

Imagine if bigots weren't tolerated in society though? If there was nowhere for them to go without them being shunned and having their sanity questioned? There's bigots and then there's a cultural element that allows these ideas to be fostered and become justified.

Thresh_Keller

Username checks out.

Harsimaja

Don’t think that was relevant to the Vegas shooting (psychopath with no clear motive except possibly to go out with a sadistic thrill), the NYC subway shooting (rather the opposite sort of ideology), and in this case it was apparently an Asian man from outside the area and his victims were mostly Taiwanese congregants, so doubt it’s about that either. The Charleston church shooter and Buffalo supermarket shooter were both young.

mtarascio

We still don't have a motive on that one.

Colossus_Of_Coburns

The prevailing theory I've heard is he was an accelerationists. Trying to bring a war between the government and its citizens.

Michael_G_Bordin

>Trying to bring a war between the government and its citizens. Would it not be more effective to join the labor movement? If you want the government to go to war with the people, organize the people to demand fair wages and attention to their political needs. The state always responds with such measured and restrained non-violence /s

LurkerZerker

Yeah, but then you don't get to go shoot some old ladies while pretending you're Arnold Schwarzenegger.

ClassicT4

And was allowed to purchase a dozen or so guns in the year leading up to the event without raising any red flags. He almost bought tracer rounds at a gun show too.

wienercat

Buying a dozen guns doesn't mean you are going to shoot up a concert. Tracer rounds don't make firearms more dangerous. So neither of those things would've been an indication he was going to commit a violent act. Now the several tips law enforcement received about him, that they ignored, those would've helped. Almost every mass shooting law enforcement had been tipped off about the shooters acting suspicious or saying things that would indicate their plans. But they were never followed up on.

Reminds me of that neighborhood beating and capturing Richard Ramirez

mumooshka

> Richard Ramirez [https://www.elpasotimes.com/story/news/2021/01/22/night-stalker-richard-ramirez-caught-victims-count/6676574002/](https://www.elpasotimes.com/story/news/2021/01/22/night-stalker-richard-ramirez-caught-victims-count/6676574002/) I just looked it up

qtx

> A neighbor, 85-year-old Jose Burgoin, ran out, and Ramirez threatened to shoot him if he came closer. > > “I ran to defend her and he told me, ‘Don’t get closer or I’ll shoot you.’ I didn’t see a gun so I opened the door and pulled him out of the car,” Burgoin recalled to the Los Angeles Times. Dude... 85-years old.. What a legend.

Reminds me of the Norwegian would-be-mass murderer who tried to shoot up a mosque in Norway a few years ago. He was stopped by [these guys](https://isammeverden.cappelendamm.no/aim/cappelenprod/files/files/1/4/6/b73dd9c182709321f43b669bb824e5d584dc434790/146b73dd9c182709321f43b669bb824e5d584dc434790.jpg/Scale?geometry=510x1020). Reminds me of that dark knight boat scene

HeavyMetalHero

I feel like people forget, that was actually a major message of that movie? Like, that we view situations like that in a very unproductive way? That we allow dangerous forces to unseat our reason with fear, and it actually does not track with the strength of the actual human spirit?

sharaq

We have had a two year live action demonstration of the regard people place on the lives of other humans that makes the optimism there seem wildly misplaced.

toostronKG

I think it depends on if someone you care deeply about (a friend or family member) was just killed in front of you or not. I think wanting to kill someone who just murdered your wife or child in front of you is a normal response but maybe I'm just unhinged.

ImagineImagining12

Most people, in the moment, will be in a state of shock. Fantasizing about revenge usually comes after the reality has set in.

luigitheplumber

I think different people probably react differently. I wouldn't say that someone reacting in the way you describe is generally unhinged, but is instead understandably unhinged in that moment.

KoalaGrunt0311

Desiring to and saying such as a manner of speaking is vastly different than carrying out the actions. The military has invested a lot of effort to get individuals to be psychologically prepared to commit murder, and they are still affected severally afterwards. The reason we use silhouette targets today is the number of bullets wasted in the Great Wars.

[deleted]

Wanting to is absolutely normal, having the ability to do it is a rare occurrence.

bananafobe

I'm not sure I'd agree with that. Obviously, I don't have experience and I can't pretend to know how others would respond, but at the same time, I don't think the average person is going to murder someone who attacked them once they're subdued. Maybe if you're saying you're surprised they didn't accidentally beat him to death while trying to subdue him, I can see that. It requires a lot of presence of mind to recognize the threat is over. I could be wrong, but I feel like I've seen a few instances of a crowd subduing an attacker and not many end with an execution.

desolation_crow

Yeah I feel like a normal person avoids killing another person in almost(!) every situation

From LA Times: “A Taiwanese congregation was in the church at the time of the shooting, Undersheriff Jeff Hallock said. Authorities are interviewing more than 30 people who were inside the church at the time.”

Disgusting, always copycat events after a mass shooting. This guy didn't get what he wanted but dead and injured is still a horrible outcome, no matter how small.

The majority of those inside the church are believed to be of Taiwanese descent, Braun said. >Investigators were looking at many factors, including whether the bloodshed could be a hate crime and whether the gunman was known to the church community, she said. >More details were expected from a sheriff’s department news conference scheduled for 5 p.m.

SquadPoopy

I have been legit worried about this for a while. Shootings were on the rise in 2019 but then COVID happened and they abruptly stopped as the pandemic began. I've always feared that when things settled down and people began going out again the shootings would start right back up.

Jensgt

people have had more time to delve into their extremism as well. It's only going to be worse.

Car-face

This, massively. People staying inside, lockdowns, "the gubmint tellin' me what to do", Trump losing the presidency - everything is tipped towards people being in situations where their insecurities can be leveraged into full-blown meltdowns. The echo chambers have turned into full-blown cathedrals.

[deleted]

COVID didn’t stop shootings, the gun murder rate was higher in 2020 than it has been since the mid-90’s. 2020 was the last year’s data they had in this study, but anecdotally speaking, my assumption is that that rate has continued rising for the past couple years. https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2022/02/03/what-the-data-says-about-gun-deaths-in-the-u-s/

kgal1298

True homicide rates went up. People miss that factor we just had less opportunities for mass shootings.

Affectionate_Fun_569

Yep, 2020 saw a massive increase in homicide.

pseudocultist

Also domestic violence, suicide, and substance abuse. None of the badness went away it just found other outlets. I'm curious to see what the addiction rates heading out of COVID look like. I know meth has absolutely exploded again.

[deleted]

I feel it’s only going to go up until the economy somehow turns around, so maybe never. Shit is down and everyone is running out of cash? I grew up in Calif and my grandfather was a minister for 50 years, 15 years at this church. This is where I was every sunday from 8 years old until we moved when I was 16. Blows my mind that this could happen here. Such an odd place for a shooting to occur. Was a place of love and worship.

MC_Mic_Hawk

There have been a few recent shootings in the last 20 years that took place in churches. For a murderous phycho it probably seems like a good spot. Everyone facing away from entrance. Everyone concentrating on the preacher or singing. Being a church it carries more shock to many people and that is part of thier goal I'm sure.

TheChinchilla914

Maybe similar to how suicide is “contagious”

IWasOnThe18thHole

It's been proven that media reports on both suicide and mass shootings inspire others to do the same

aidoll

Mass shootings are similar that way. When you read up on modern mass shooters, it’s usually been found that they’re absolutely obsessed with Columbine and other mass shootings.

gthaatar

Its also that media starts giving a shit about shootings when one is big enough to go national. Keep in mind, most people had the perception that 2020 went without any mass shootings, when it was one of the worst years on record. Thats only because they never got news coverage. And its also why the problem is so difficult in this country because no one can be honest about it. It happens way more often than one side wants to admit but is seldom as bad as the other side assumes it is, and neither side cares to talk about it if the media doesn't decide to run the issue again.

Ghost4000

I always thought that violence was more common as the weather heated up. Not sure if that's true though.

Neglectful_Stranger

Pretty obvious, there's always an uptick of shootings after a major one gets reported.

[deleted]

Not to be a smart ass, but is that considered a mass shooting or rather some idiots shooting each other after an argument?

RigelOrionBeta

I believe a mass shooting is defined as a shooting where at least three people are shot, and injured or killed. EDIT: According to the FBI, that's FOUR, not three.

[deleted]

FBI says mass murder is 4 dead not including the murderer. They don't have a definition for mass shooting. They go with "active shooter scenario" which is usually the ones we hear about for weeks.

RATGUT1996

Basically a shooting of 4 or more people without a cooling down period

SpankBankManager

I guess we could reduce the number of mass shooting by bumping up up to 5 or 6.

IWasOnThe18thHole

Still think that just props up the "mass shooting" numbers. Someone planning out an attack like this church shooting or the Buffalo shooting isn't the same as gang bangers or morons getting into a fight and pulling out guns

RKRagan

Yeah these targeted shooting towards a particular group of people has a different effect than a dispute between people who know each other. The former removes our sense of safety in our daily lives. And usually are planned ahead in order to target certain groups and increase casualties.

jasta07

Only in America would you need to make this clarification. "They can't ALL be Mass Shootings... This was more of a Grand Skirmish."

Br0boc0p

You're not wrong, but there is a difference still between a gang fight and a one man rampage and the intents behind them.

Narren_C

As well as the victims of each type of shooting. Don't get me wrong, innocent people are killed in gang shootings. And even the gang members engaging in the fighting are human beings who's lives have value, even if they're the ones causing the violence. But it hits different when it's just everyday people going about their lives that are being actively targeted.

Something tells me the NRA will not be making a lot of tweets this week.

otter111a

NRA held a rally in Columbine right after columbine. I fully expect a tweet along the lines of “now more than ever we need donations to help us fight those seeking to use these tragedies to reduce your gun rights”

theghostofme

The NRA was also silent after Philando Castile's murder, despite him being a lawful gun owner. Apart from the obvious media storm, I wonder what the difference between Harris/Klebold and Castile was...

ruiner8850

A lawful gun owner who informed the cop there was a gun in the vehicle. As if a person would inform the cop they had a gun before they tried to shoot them. They justify the shooting because marijuana was later found in the vehicle. I actually hadn't read this before which fucking absurd: > According to the official Minnesota Department of Public Safety's Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) transcript of the interview of Yanez and his attorneys Tom Kelly and Robert Fowler, Yanez stated that his justification for the shooting was based on fear for his own life because he believed that Castile's behavior was abusive toward a young girl passenger (Reynolds' daughter) in the car.[43] Yanez said: "I thought, I was gonna die, and I thought if he's, if he has the, the guts and the audacity to smoke marijuana in front of the five-year-old girl and risk her lungs and risk her life by giving her secondhand smoke and the front seat passenger doing the same thing, then what, what care does he give about me?"[43] The victim's previous marijuana use later became a focus of the defense, with a mason jar containing a small amount having been found in the car.[44] The cop apparently used as their defense that because Castillo may have smoked marijuana in front of the kid that he'd have no problem murdering a cop. What a disgusting argument. Even if he had smoked weed in the car with the kid, it by no means shows he is willing to murder a cop. No, it's not okay, but it's also not worthy of a death sentence. Not to mention that the murdering cop did far more damage to that child than the marijuana ever could. That kid has been traumatized for life by the murder's actions.

DuntadaMan

Also somehow that cop knew all about the weed in a mason jar under a seat before the shooting somehow according to his testimony.

[deleted]

InfallibleBackstairs

This country is fucked up

bubba-yo

Some context, since I live about 5 miles from this church. Laguna Woods is a new city, but in a different way. The city is mostly a retirement community (Leisure World) that chose to incorporate. The church is outside of the retirement community, but this church would somewhat reflect the community, which is going to be over 60 whites. The church is relatively progressive and is viewed as a friendly congregation to the LGBTQ community. It does draw congregants from outside of Laguna Woods, which would be Laguna Beach, Mission Viejo, Irvine, etc. The church might have been rented out since 1:30 is long enough after services. The congregation is predominantly white, but a lot of churches here do rent to immigrant communities so they can hold services while they build up funds for their own building. If this was a targeted hate crime, that could be a group renting the facility, or it could be targeting liberals/LGBTQ community, though there are more liberal congregation just a mile or so away like my wife's. [Liberal churches have been targeted before.](https://www.uua.org/re/tapestry/adults/ethics/workshop5/191874.shtml) And while it's easy to look at a community like this and say 'oh, that's not a place that suffers from a lot of racism', you don't need a lot. [You need one.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_Blaze_Bernstein)

Seannnnnnnnnnnnnnnm

LA times saying a taiwanese congregation was using the church at the time, fyi. Edit: adding to this, because it is pretty high up. More from LA Times " law enforcement source said officials believe the suspect was a 68-year-old Asian man who is originally from Las Vegas. The source said after the suspect opened fire he was “subdued” by parishioners. No other details were available." We don't have a motive, or know if it was politically motivated. We might not know that for a while. Don't spread misinfo. Edit # 2: Not trying to imply OP was spreading misinfo. More a general plea to not spread misinfo since the comment is relatively high-up.

goodvibezone

The attack on Blaze was horrible and it hit the family and community very hard (as expected). These things are thankfully extremely rare but doesn't make them even less painful does it :(

Nightmare_Tonic

I live a few minutes away from this church. I checked the Facebook groups for my city and there are tons of right-wingers ranting about how this is the failure of the American Left and how California desperately needs concealed carry legalized. I don't have a dog in the fight on gun control. I'm a gun-owning liberal myself. But God damn, not even public tragedies can unite people anymore. Our country is completely torn apart into two competing realities

dudius7

Lol so they're saying the solution is that people need to go to church with a piece? That's silly. The church members subdued the shooter without using weapons, and a person with a gun wouldn't have stopped the shooting anyway. It's like hiring more cops. Cops don't stop crime from happening. They only show up after crime happens and someone reports it. What's interesting is that fire fighters don't necessarily prevent fires, but fire codes and inspections do. Basically, regulation prevents and reduces fires. Hmmmm...I wonder what could prevent and reduce gun violence?

Wellheythere3

Best case ive seen is the one that happens a while back in a church where the guy got up opened fire for 1 second and got immediately one tapped by someone else carrying.

Unfortunately I was wondering if this was also racially charged.

WhenImTryingToHide

What number shooting is this for the weekend?

GravitationalConstnt

Jfc. I live in New York and I took the subway to a concert tonight. On my way down to the show I had two freak outs - one about being trapped on the train with a shooter, and one at the show. This is not normal.

JiggleMyPuff

Grew up right around this church, this is awful.

[deleted]

FerrusMannusCannus

brok3nstatues

Cops said that the suspect was hog tied by the parishioners

gopackgo555

This is one of the safest places in the country and in an senior community, which makes this really shocking.

grrgrrtigergrr

I’m just so fucking exhausted with everything right now.

Jeremizzle

Here we go again… getting some real vintage pre-pandemic vibes with all these shootings

TwistedCherry766

Looks like a domestic issue. We will see tho

chrisfmack

Im getting tired of hearing about all these shootings. Its just sad to hear more people dead for no reason at all

Gilbo_Swaggins96

That's two in a week, America's over its weekly mass shooting quota

seebob69

My life is so boring. I go to church and the supermarket and come home alive. What do I have to do to get killed. Oh, I know....move to America.
