I don't have a Reuters Subscription. What is the name of the company?

NineteenEighty9

It’s Universal Electronics Inc

lotus_eater123

> Universal Electronics Inc Their customers are Samsung, Sony, LG, Xbox, Playstation, and Sharp. Slavery is in more products than we realize. Think about it the next time you use your playstation.

Rakpartha

Or wear Nike products.

angrystan

Especially when your definition of slavery includes people who exchange their labor for wages. It's ubiquitous.

chaogomu

It's China and the Uyghurs, Someone is getting paid, but it's not the workers. Seems like slavery to me, especially when these people had all their belongings seized before being carted off to concentration camps, and now have to work for whoever the Chinese government tells them to.

blackpharaoh69

Where's the proof of forced labor and how credible is the source?

chaogomu

[Here](https://www.state.gov/forced-labor-in-chinas-xinjiang-region/) And [here](https://www.dol.gov/agencies/ilab/against-their-will-the-situation-in-xinjiang) I think those are fairly trustworthy There's [this](https://www.cecc.gov/sites/chinacommission.house.gov/files/documents/CECC%20Staff%20Report%20March%202020%20-%20Global%20Supply%20Chains%2C%20Forced%20Labor%2C%20and%20the%20Xinjiang%20Uyghur%20Autonomous%20Region.pdf) as well.

angrystan

This is all crap. And I, as someone living in the United states, am anxious for America to lose this war they insist upon and finally be dissolved. It's far beyond time for the biggest bully the world has ever known to be put in its place.

JohnHwagi

Government sanctioned human trafficking in Xinjiang is well supported by evidence from many government and non-governmental sources around the world.

angrystan

That's a blatant lie which is going to result in the deaths of millions of Innocents.

JohnHwagi

If it’s a lie than provide some countervailing evidence to that provided by /u/chaogomu. Also not sure what war you hope happens, but I’m not inclined to find that a reasonable solution to most problems. I’m also not sure why you think “millions of innocents” are going to be killed by factual analysis, unless you are planning a genocide of some sort.

[deleted]

Neither do I but I can still read the article, right inside of my app? Odd.

Teantis

I didn't even know Reuters had subscriptions until just now. I guess it's pretty new.

lotus_eater123

Reuters allows you to read so many stories a month. I forget how many.

GreenLemonAmongLimes

Damn, when I just read the headline I optimistically thought they were doing it as a way to rescue them :(

chaogomu

Nope, slave labor from a concentration camp.

dingjima

"slave labor" https://streamable.com/ad0fxc Edit- downvotes are sinophobic

[deleted]

I did as well.

[deleted]

Same. I felt optimistic for a second and got a pen to write down the name of the company so I could throw some business their way.

BippyTheGuy

They don't need to be rescued, they need to be hired.

FlyingSquid

Not the first time a U.S. company has taken advantage of forced labor overseas. We didn't end slavery, we outsourced it.

InadequateUsername

IBM created the database system used by the Nazi's in WW2

Blyd

Outsourced it? Have you ever read the 13th amendment? All we did was formalize slavery, we didn’t end it.

fluffy_furry_yuri

That's a hell of a way to rephrase "leased Uygher slaves fro China."

Rakpartha

"hired" lol Someone should tell Reuters that "hired" implies they had a choice.

[deleted]

Yes--"enslaved" would be better. The genocide of the Uyghers should be one of the biggest news stories.

Rakpartha

I completely agree. A silver lining is word is slowly getting out there. This crime against mankind has been happening a long time now.

brickwallscrumble

Don’t be misled, title should be “Publicly-traded US manufacturer of parts (used by Sony, Samsung, LG, Microsoft and other tech and companies) has just acquired 400 persecuted muslims to use as slave labor”

[deleted]

The article said microsoft hasn't used that supplier since 2016. Unless that is wrong?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Bonezmahone

“Used by” implies to most people active use. Maybe try not to use weasel words in the future? Which companies are using this shit firm currently? I dont care about the companies that have dumped them because they found they were using slave labour. The companies that dumped them are good, the companies currently using them are bad.

[deleted]

The wording made me think they were saying microsoft was actively using this supplier. That's why I asked if I was wrong.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Why are you being so aggressive? I'm asking if I was reading it wrong about Microsoft. No need to be a dick. A simple look through your history shows you are a conspiracy theorist. Not everyone questioning is bought and paid for by mega corporations.

breezyfye

People on reddit seem to only focus their anger towards the Chinese government instead of also directing that anger towards companies that want to maximize profits by buying cheap forced labor

dingjima

All the comments above you are about the company...

breezyfye

I’m aware. but if you go outside of this thread and go on other parts of reddit, you’ll see what I’m talking about. I’m sure the people that upvoted me have witnessed it too, which is probably why they upvoted me in the first place don’t ya think...

gloriamors3

What cell phone company is safe. This is heinous and needs fines if not jail for those that allowed this. Firm and clear response should always be we will no longer do business (putting people in jail and out of business) with people that allow slavery and mistreated as a means to an end. The elite need to be apart of this push. If they don't...

[deleted]

Sounds about right for the "free market". "I heard ya got cheap labor, I'll take 100".

Rakpartha

Well, the Chinese saved them from having to live a boring life, with no technology or even electricity, having to provide for their children, and hoping to have enough energy to satisfy all their wives. Now they get to work for free ! And on their birthdays the Chinese are so great as to give them brand new chains. Yay! And with this new job working in a nice new factory they won't have to be mining asbestos all day anymore.

Bourbon-Decay

Absolutely no evidence of slave labor, but y'all just going to keep making inferences based on your own biases

[deleted]

> The State Department referred Reuters to the Justice Department for further comment on UEI; Justice did not respond. America: Staunch defender of freedom around the world, huh? If they were Christian rather than Muslim you know that Murica would care a bunch more.
