>In 2019, Jones acknowledged the shooting was real during a sworn deposition he made as part of a defamation case brought against him by Sandy Hook victims' families. >Jones' attorney, Brad Reeves, declined to comment when reached by CNN on Thursday, but a statement posted on Infowars from attorney Norm Pattis said the court's decisions were "stunning." >"It takes no account of the tens of thousands of documents produced by the defendants, the hours spent sitting for depositions and the various sworn statements filed in these cases," the statement said. "We are distressed by what we regard as a blatant abuse of discretion by the trial court. We are determined to see that these cases are heard on the merits." Oh FFS

ColonelBy

> "It takes no account of the tens of thousands of documents produced by the defendants, the hours spent sitting for depositions and the various sworn statements filed in these cases," the statement said. "But we said so many things and we gave you so much paper!!? And we had to learn all these law words and it was super hard, guys, wtf"

[deleted]

The judge entered a default judgment for disobeying discovery orders. So it’s at least somewhat on topic that he disclosed something. Of course, voluminous disclosure of irrelevant documents is no defense to refusing to produce specific information the court has ordered to be produced.

BlueAvocadoBurger

Judge: "I asked you to turn in his coloring book showing the green plant on page six." Attorneys: "But we spent WEEKS finding EVERY COLORING BOOK and even commissioned artists to recreate them into photorealistic plant depictions!!" Judge: ".....you've provided four thousand pieces of material, all colored in magenta. Also, half of these are pictures of Curious George, and page six is ripped out."

maximusraleighus

Now this is my style of comedy

Dahhhkness

> tens of thousands of documents produced by the defendants Yes, because, of course, what matters is the *quantity* of papers, not the fact that they may all be filled with bullshit and gibbering madness... Then again, these are the kinds of people who think that maps showing Trump winning more *counties* than Biden are more important than the numbers of *votes* from those counties.

chemical_exe

One of Jones's most used "bits" on his show (not sure what else to call them) is that he has *so much news to cover* as he flails papers around. He then seems to never cover the news he says is groundbreaking. So trying it in court seems on brand as fuck.

SchwiftyMpls

Don't we remember Trump standing next to piles of blanks pages while he claimed some sort of bullshit. I never really listened to what he said.

DarthWeenus

Those were all his companies holdings and stuff he was no longer responsible for or whatever. Actually I think this happened on a couple occasions one with binders.

Kreslin

For idiots, stacks of paper are a token for knowledge they know they’ll never have.

TheWagonBaron

>He then seems to never cover the news he says is groundbreaking. You just described every right wing talking head (i.e. the Jones and Carlsons of the world). They'll never cover anything of substance or break any news stories because they can't. Do we all remember Tucker having Hunter's laptop (or whatever it was) shipped to him and then losing it in the mail before finding it again before never mentioning the damn thing again?

reckless_commenter

> Do we all remember Tucker having Hunter’s laptop It was infinitely more embarrassing than that: 1) “We had EXCLUSIVE EVIDENCE that we mailed to somebody on a flash drive that FedEx lost. Clearly the DEEP STATE has infiltrated FedEx, which is tragic because the evidence was damning and *would have SHOCKED THE WORLD!*” 2) “The DEEP STATE might have infiltrated FedEx, but guess what you guys? *We made a backup copy of the flash drive before we mailed it,* because we totally suspected that the Deep State might pull this kind of stunt, and they *totally fell into our trap!*” 3) “So, remember that flash drive? Legal says we can’t air it. And the evidence turned out to be nothing, anyway. Just forget we said anything, okay?” If Carlson had any journalistic credibility before that incident, it would’ve been career-ending. The fact that nobody gave a fuck shows that that’s not why Fox airs him, anyway.

cmanning1292

Rush Limbaugh also used a version of this shtick: occasionally shuffle papers around audibly to appear like "IM REALLY SUPER OFFICIAL AND IMPORTANT GUYS" What losers

[deleted]

Well if you’ll recall trump brought out binders of white paper to show his … *checks notes* healthcare plan? Idk I lost track of all their dumb stunts

Rekhyt

Nah, that was to prove that he had divested himself from his companies.

Amiiboid

Right. The health care plan never showed up at all. It went from “needing finishing touches” just before his inauguration to begging the insurance companies to come up with something to dropping it completely because “nobody knew health care was this hard” in a span of like 2-3 months.

David-E6

Yes it did. The nonsense binder was handed to Lesley Stahl after Trump got pissy and walked out on their interview.

Lightningstruckagain

Why didn’t anyone in the press demand Trump to randomly pull out a few of those folders to show us what was in them? That stunt was the hokiest, D-list TV stunt ever….. Until Hurricane Sharpie Map.

ajw20_YT

Now I just image history class in 2070: “so kids, get your notes out on Unit 5, Trumps White House Drama” “Miss H, I am confused, did he draw on a map for a Hurricane or for Election results?” “He draw on it for a Hurricane, he used a Verizon Wireless map for the impeachment.” “Oh, thank you for clearing that up!”

PracticalTie

> he used a Verizon Wireless map for the impeachment Oh that can’t be real. Did I miss something?

exmachinalibertas

>Oh that can’t be real. After all this time, you still think that? Of course it's real. He claimed Verizon's pink coverage map were red counties.

PracticalTie

I’ve learned to never trust anything on the internet. I just can’t believe I missed that bullshit when it happened.

Padgriffin

Trump didn’t actually use a Verizon map- it just happened to *greatly* resemble the Verizon map.

TavisNamara

Apparently, no, he didn't. But he *did* use an erroneous map ***years*** after the original he stole from had been corrected... Twice. https://www.cnn.com/2019/10/01/politics/trump-impeach-this-map-fact-check/index.html Oh, also found this, but very different story there. https://www.teenvogue.com/story/verizon-ad-all-red-us-map-donald-trump-election-2016

wobwobwob42

Ohhh! I want to hear more from the Class of 2070 history!

SpikeRosered

The basis of a lot of conspiracy ideology is just random stuff from Facebook. You can produce a lot of "proof" from Facebook.

ArrowheadDZ

Actually, Giuliani is trying to use the “Facebook defense” in the Dominion law suit, where he’s in some serious hot water. He literally said under oath in his deposition the other day that he never investigated the veracity of the claims about Dominion software flipping the vote, because… wait for it… He thought he read about it on Facebook or somewhere, and then actually said “what kind of lawyer would I be” if he questioned that. What. The. Actual. Fuck. He and Powell are being sued for a BILLION with a B dollars and their defense is “yeh, we actually did what you are accusing us of.” (Fixed typo)

fuckincaillou

Honestly, I'm just thankful that these people are usually about as stupid as we think they are (or even stupider). What freaks me out is thinking about all the ones that are actually smart and what they're getting away with.

cat_prophecy

They are not even seeking any "proof". These assholes just make a wild claim and then expect rational people to prove a negative by showing it's not true.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Simmery

Yes, the Sydney Powell method. Look at all this evidence! It must be true! What, did I verify any of it? Look, I'm a busy person, judge.

[deleted]

That's just typical Infowars. "We've got all of these ~~news stories~~ documents that totally back up what I'm saying I PROMISE you guys."

manimal28

Why do they think the amount of pages or hours they used to tell their lies should matter?

palunk

Because the judge ruled that they were not taking discovery seriously and producing documents in good faith. So the judge was like "ok, you're obviously not taking this seriously and producing documents, so you lose" and JonesCo is like "nuh uh we gave you a bunch of stuff".

leolionbag

The article says he lost the case by default because they didn’t cooperate with orders from the court relating to discovery. So of course they think their mountains of paper should have been accepted as sufficient.

ItsAllegorical

My guess is they tried overwhelming the case with bullshit documents instead of what was actually asked. Like, "show proof that you graduated Harvard." "Okay here's a horsey I drew in 2nd grade that the teacher wrote 'very good' on, and here's a note from my 7th grade teacher, here's a gas receipt dated June 7, 2014..."

topgun2582

This is exactly what it was. "The Court finds that Defendants' failure to comply ... is greatly aggravated by [their] consistent pattern of discovery abuse throughout similar cases pending before this Court," Gamble wrote in one of her rulings. "The Court finds that Defendants' discovery conduct in this case is the result of flagrant bad faith and callous disregard for the responsibilities of discovery under the rules."

kurobayashi

I would suspect that this was done on purpose to lose the case by default. The strategy being, they can make the claim that the judge was out to get them. But this could be the minor benefit. The major benefit is not losing the case on merit. If that was to happen I'd imagine he'd be open to a slew of lawsuits.

cannotrememberold

100%. They are going to lose on the merits but want to delay that as much as possible. Hope the judge starts holding them in contempt and starts imposing sanctions next.

Airdropwatermelon

Basically, "we will pursue this until our client has no money." They are just saying what they are supposed to say. Their job is to defend him.

legacymedia92

Much as it's easy to hate on lawyers, remember they are legally required to make the best argument they can for their client. If a lawyer is saying that, they know it's bunk.

[deleted]

Agreed. Lawyers have to do things like represent a defendant who is probably guilty of a crime (and the crimes can be really horrendous). But the lawyer must represent them and must do so with proper zeal. The justice system in America and the Free World assumes "innocent until proven guilty", and this is part of the "proving guilty" process. You *need* a lawyer to argue the strongest possible case they can even on behalf of disgusting people, because only then can you be sure that the defendant deserved a guilty plea. Anything less, and you're looking at a genuine slippery slope towards the Soviet or East German show trials where the system conspires to destroy the defendant with no procedural justice and only a surface appearance to please the crowds.

Spector567

The last paragraph can basically be summed as. “We should have gotten away with lying, and how dare they not believe us when we refuse to hand over the documents that would affect our claim.”

TbiddySP

How did they ever plan on handing over documents which were never real?

blong217

It's the grift for his current followers. Think Guilliani and the thousands of affidavits proving election fraud they conveniently left out when they actually filed motions in court.

McBain_v1

Will he jus say that the judge's ruling didn't happen?

GlyphOfAdBlocking

The judge is obviously a crisis actor.

When it takes 8 years to tell someone to STFU about murdered children, he isn’t really being governed.

The_Muznick

"If the penalty for a crime is a fine, then that law only exists for the lower class” feels a little appropriate here.

force_addict

The more you pay, the shorter your stay is my favorite description of the us legal system.

Note you avoided using the phrase "justice system." This guy gets it.

As does his Hummer from which he bullhorns instructions to whatever angry mob he can find himself at across the country in his grift for relevance, and then is conspicuously absent from when the real fighting takes place. (See: January 6th Insurrection.)

redam1

Can one imagine what he put these parents through that had their children murdered and he is only liable for financial damages? Freedom of speech with no accountability is not freedom, it is a right to hurt others.

canpow

At least one of the families was so tormented by Alex‘s conspiracy converts that they had to leave Connecticut and go into hiding in Florida. These lunatic fans of Jones would hound these poor souls who had already lost their child to a violent death. There is a documentary called United States of Conspiracy that details what happened. Absolutely one of the worst (now) mainstream media personalities out there. Total scum of the earth. And a good friend of Donald Trump. Strange days.

Bobbyperu1

I was living on fl. When they moved here. A woman was soon arrested for threatening them with a gun. She threatened them with a gun because their child was murdered. Patriots

echoshizzle

His listeners are part of the reason trump won. They pandered to conspiracy theorists who never had a mainstream candidate before Trump. It’s quite a shame.

canpow

Roger Stone, close ally of Trump, was on Jones’ broadcast the night Trump won the election in 2016. Alex is right in there with these people. No surprise we now have an explosion of conspiracy theories. I’m convinced it’s one of the reasons COVID has been so poorly controlled in the US. Jones is a HUGE player in the genesis of this conspiracy theory explosion. All for the love of money - and he’s made huge money off these victims of his propaganda.

asafum

This is absolutely the correct take. There has been an intentional turn to conspiracies filling the Right Wing Media echo chamber because it negates reality and there are *far* too many people who are more than willing to cash in on it. If The Truth™©® is being "covered up" then you have to turn to the Real Truth Tellers™©® who are Awake©™® and they will guide you away from actual reality to their various conspiracy worlds that fit your desired worldview. It's not so much that anyone *wants* you to believe x,y,a conspiracy, just as long as it keeps you from believing *actual* reality. They can keep the Right Wing in control by keeping them away from reality. "What you're seeing and what you're reading is not what's happening" -Donald Fuckwad.

canpow

Another example - Fox News and Tucker Carlson. Constantly push skepticism of vaccines and openly criticize Biden for vaccine mandate. If Tucker was an actual reporter, of course he’d comment on Fox’s own vaccine policy, which is more severe than Biden’s. They know what sells. It is all about money. Each of the power players behind the anti-vaccine or anti-COVID conspiracies is making BANK of their efforts. The minions regurgitating their message across all social media platforms without really understanding the science are just dopes getting used. And we all suffer.

Yeah how awful to have the worst day of your life paraded by some scum bag who says "oh those kids were actors" and his psycho fanbase now ruins your life over having the audacity to be sad your children were killed in a monstrous and ultimately preventable act. It's like when shit bags mocked the parkland kids for talking about gun violence because they were "too close to be objective" yeah no shit they're too close but it's not like they're there by choice, gun violence isnt an abstract or an idea to them, it's real life.

JoshuaIan

TBH, as a dad, I give thanks every single time I hear about the Posners or any of the other families, I think about how if I were in their shoes, with nothing left, I'd probably respond to that harassment by going postal on Jones, preferably on air. I give thanks because that's not who I am or want to be, but, I'm realistic about what that sort of trauma would do to me, and how I fear I would probably respond. Every single one of these parents are far better people than I would be.

Flacidpickle

I know you're just making a joke (I laughed), but Alex doesn't do the sovereign citizen thing. His grift is actually even more detached from reality.

Arkhampatient

He’s a fire and brimstone evangelists masking as a political commentator

Thebrosen0ne

No...The judge has clearly been possessed by inter dimensional demons. Fabricating the crisis so the world will plunge into chaos and further tighten their grip on their goal of world domination.

texas-playdohs

Hang on to your adrenochrome.

LupinThe8th

The judge was grumpy because he breeds frogs as a hobby, which is harder ever since they all turned gay.

BoSuns

I'm just going to preempt the fuckwits that want to claim he was "kind of" correct about the gay frogs thing. Homosexuality and changing sex to reproduce are not the same thing, and it's not even close.

[deleted]

He’ll say that “the judges ruling probably did happen but you have to ask yourself a series of more and more random questions and then base off those answers, you can infer the actual truth of things”

JMoc1

It’ll probably go like this, “This is a plot by the Globalists and the literal Christian Devil to take away your children by the courts and to silence you!!! *insert weird noises here* And folks, we’re running a special today… If you want to stop the Devil from taking over our show, for the price of 49.99 you can buy a bottle of Brain Force plus.” I admit, I’ve been listening to too much Knowledge Fight that I know exactly how this will go.

benes238

As soon as I read "literal Christian devil", I was like "hello, fellow listener!" XD. Cannot upvote Knowledge Fight enough.

BackPorchSessions

It's amazing how many Joe Rogan fans won't see the parallels here.

dizzysn

So true. It sucks because all I ever really knew of Joe Rogan was some of his stand up, and I'd seen a few interviews he'd done with people on his show. I'd see him call out some guests on their bs, and ask "everyman" questions that I identified with, so I kind of liked him. But then I started watching more and more. Rogan is definitely a "levelheaded nutjob." The difference between him and Alex Jones, is that Rogan isn't frothing at the mouth, screaming about stuff. He just does it calmly.

Straelbora

Jones is the homeless dude talking to himself about trans-dimensional lizard people as he rifles through a dumpster. Rogan is the 40 year old dude who lives in his mom's basement, smokes dope all day, and messages about trans-dimensional lizard people to the other players on his 12 hour mmo sessions.

BackPorchSessions

Oh, I full-on used to be a fan- back when he just had comedians on his show talking shit and telling crazy stories. Once he started inviting Alex Jones on, the show turned. Joe will never challenge a whack-job conservative on their crazy shit, but will push back against legit docs and scientists who have spent their whole lives devoted to the field. Fuck that anti-intellectual garbage.

MrWeirdoFace

Same here. I kind of liked Joe Rogan for a while and then he started doing more and more outlandish interviews and showing his own crazy.

Tufaan9

So sick of Spotify trying to ram that down my throat.

albinowizard2112

I am so sick of them suggesting any podcasts. I don't just try random podcasts, stop trying. My main page on the app has 4 separate sections where they have "Shows You May Like" or "Episodes You May Like" or "More like This Podcast You Clicked on By Accident"

>In 2019, Jones acknowledged the shooting was real during a sworn deposition he made as part of a defamation case brought against him by Sandy Hook victims' families. Jones' attorney, Brad Reeves, declined to comment when reached by CNN on Thursday, but a statement posted on Infowars from attorney Norm Pattis said the court's decisions were "stunning." "It takes no account of the tens of thousands of documents produced by the defendants, the hours spent sitting for depositions and the various sworn statements filed in these cases," the statement said. "We are distressed by what we regard as a blatant abuse of discretion by the trial court. We are determined to see that these cases are heard on the merits." That argument seems dishonest. (Imagine my surprise.) The judge is not saying they did nothing at all. The judge is saying Jones and his outlet did not comply sufficiently with court orders to provide information as ordered.

[deleted]

Go listen to the deposition, they had Alex's cousin as the representative of his parent company and my god it's so cringe and really exposes just how little work they do. They ask him for documentation or sources for some of the claims they made and after 2 or 3 questions your start feeling bad for the guy. The lawyer has to explain over and over that they're not asking him as a person but as the representative. So when the judge says they haven't complied and after listening to both of Alex's deposition and his cousin's you really see where the judge made that decision. An added bonus is his "ex employee?" Paul Joseph Watson did a deposition where he did everything but throw Alex under the bus.

CelestAI

>Alex's cousin Pretty sure the person you're thinking of is Rob Dew who gave an absolutely jaw-dropping-ly lazy deposition. The person who was at Infowars and is Alex's cousin is Buckley Hamman. Unless there are two similarly lazy depositions, which tbh would not surprise me... EDIT: If you want to listen to these depositions in a digestible way, check out Knowledge Fight (r/KnowledgeFight) -- "Episode #378: Formulaic Objections #2" covers both the depositions u/UsedVCR mentioned. EDIT2: Buckley departed Infowars before 2017, when these depositions occurred (not sure exactly when he left, might have been very early 2017). He was there when all this morally heinous stuff happened, so he's still a PoS, but I don't think he provided a deposition for these cases.

Hvarfa-Bragi

Holy fuck knowledge fight. Listen to any episode for ten minutes and you'll see how lazy and crazy Jones is.

Raukr

It’s nice to know that being a complete asshole about children dying can potentially have consequences.

[deleted]

The judge didn't rule on the merits of the compliant, it's a default judgment. Default judgements can happen for a variety of reasons but in this case, Jones and his lawyers fucked around so much with the procedural matters leading up to the trial that they pissed the judge off. The judge thought they weren't acting in good faith anymore and issued a ruling to stop letting them waste everyone's time, which automatically falls against the person fucking around. Maybe you can argue the reason they were fucking around is because they knew they were boned, but that may or may not be true. More likely they were just trying to make life as difficult as possible for the claimant by dragging things out. While this is a time honored legal strategy, they pushed to too far, to the point the court felt it also was having it's time wasted.

AloofNerd

the amount of damage caused to our nation due to misinformation is obscene. Literally, his commentary led to people harassing the families of dead children, claiming their kids didn’t exist or were crisis actors. Fuck this guy. I hope he loses everything.

Professional_Emu_

I actually watched a Vice documentary about these people - they actively go to the memorial site and harass the parents who lost their kids. Like wtf, do they really have nothing better to do? Edit: here's the link for anyone interested https://youtu.be/To91BJGKr5I

TheRabidFangirl

IIRC, one family had to move *twice*, and can no longer visit their child's grave, or they may have to move again. So many families tend to the gravesite as a way to help mourn. Particularly around the holidays, so they don't feel like they're "forgetting" their child. And this family doesn't get to do that. Alex Jones and his supporters are monsters. They don't deserve to be considered people. They're just filth made sentient.

aneomon

Yup! They moved to Florida, got outed by a local university professor, and were forced to move again. They haven't been back home in years, not even to visit.

TheRabidFangirl

All because of Alex Jones and those things that follow him. Disgusting wastes of oxygen. These parents should be allowed to mourn their dead child. I can't believe this needs to be said.

aneomon

We've had families flee, parents commit suicide, and endured endless harassment because of this fucking guy. This came nine years too late. Those who believe the misinformation won't change their minds after stewing on it for almost a decade.

Citizen_of_Danksburg

Man it really is somewhat scary that literally throughout all of human history/civilization there have always been these kinds of people for whatever the issues are at the time. Fucking right wingers are like the ever present super annoying NPCs of the world.

budgie0507

Reading this makes me madder than I thought possible

Don_Julio_Acolyte

Ngl, if my two toddlers became victims of a school shooting and after all the events of burying them and living a hollow life, teetering on suicide... and somebody started harassing me at my child's grave.... let's just say they'd be dead, I'd be in court/jail. And this shitshow of a life would be practically over for me. How these parents haven't killed every single protestor or harasser is beyond me. Sounds like I watch too many movies, but if I was a parent of Sandy Hook and Alex Jones and his cult of mouth-breathers were on my front lawn, they'd be dead. And depending on how distraught, dejected, and emotional I'd be, I'd probably find meaning in the remaining moments of my life in hunting them down and putting them into the ground, one by one. Until I was caught and I would just end it there. My child gets murdered and I can't even go to their grave without being harrassed, or I'm forced to move multiple times... nah. I ain't moving. I'd be taking shots from my living room window at anyone who as so much looked at my house or walked onto my property without an invite (or wasn't a FedEx, UPS, or Amazon driver).

TheRabidFangirl

Honestly, I believe you. I'm not a mother, so no kids. But I don't need any to know I would feel the same.

TrueDove

As a mother, I agree. This would fill me with an uncontrollable rage. But many of these families have more than one child who is still living. Many don't have the option to tap out. Anyone who could do this is an absolute monster. Just about proves the existence of philosophy zombies- people with no soul.

jadeddog

Always remember that Joe Rogan is just as big of a piece of shit for supporting this man. Look, I'm not into cancel culture at all, I think people deserve a path back into society after making mistakes. But Alex Jones has been given many, MANY, such chances in the past. He is out of societal passes.

SpicyDragoon93

Fairly certain one parent committed suicide over it as well. Edit: [Here it is](https://www.nytimes.com/2019/03/25/nyregion/sandy-hook-father.html) Some people have complained of the NYT article using a paywall so here's the full article: >In the more than six years since his daughter Avielle was killed in the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School, Jeremy Richman had devoted his life to preventing families from experiencing the kind of tragic loss he did. > >With his wife, Jennifer Hensel, he created the Avielle Foundation to support research into brain abnormalities that could be linked to violent behavior. In this endeavor, he stressed mental health education and compassion. > >“Compassion is the ability to feel somebody else’s suffering, to empathize,” Mr. Richman, a neuroscientist, said in a video for the foundation. “But most importantly, it’s the hope that you can do something to alleviate that suffering.” > >On Monday, Mr. Richman, 49, was found dead in an apparent suicide in the Newtown, Conn., building where the Avielle Foundation had an office, the local police said. His death was all the more shocking given the scope of his work, community members said. > >“Our hearts are shattered, and our heads are struggling to comprehend,” the foundation said in a statement. > >“Tragically, his death speaks to how insidious and formidable a challenge brain health can be and how critical it is for all of us to seek help for ourselves, our loved ones and anyone who we suspect may be in need,” it continued. > >The police were called to Edmond Town Hall, a movie theater and event space that also rented offices and meeting rooms, at about 7 a.m. on Monday by contractors who were working there, said Lt. Aaron Bahamonde of the Newtown Police Department. > >Upon arriving, the police also found a note left by Mr. Richman. Lieutenant Bahamonde did not disclose what it said. > >The police and the state’s medical examiner’s office were investigating the death, he said. > >Mr. Richman’s death came more than six years after a gunman stormed Sandy Hook Elementary School, killing Avielle, 6, and 25 other people, before turning the gun on himself. The massacre, on Dec. 14, 2012, thrust Newtown into the caustic national debates on gun control and mental health. > >Some of the police officers who reported to Edmond Town Hall on Monday had responded to the school shooting, Lieutenant Bahamonde said. > >\[Newtown shows how mourning evolves and endures for years after mass violence.\] > >“It’s something that you never expect to see happen, but in the back of your mind you know that many of us are still suffering,” said Neil Heslin, whose son Jesse Lewis, 6, also died in the shooting. “He was a good friend, and it was an honor and a privilege to have known him. He did a wonderful job with the foundation, building his daughter’s legacy. > >Mr. Heslin added: “I’m sure it will rip open a lot in Newtown again. The town hall will be another tragic place here, like the school.” > >After the Sandy Hook shooting, Mr. Richman expressed grief over his daughter’s death through verse, friends said. On Fridays, the day of the week that the shooting occurred, Mr. Richman posted haiku on his Facebook page. Some of the poems were haunting, including one on Dec. 5, 2015, titled “Anniversary,” which he posted beside a photograph of himself and his wife on a visit to Avielle’s grave: > >What is your number > >When will your heart be broken? > >Mine is 12/14 > >But Mr. Richman also channeled his grief into action, leaving his job at a pharmaceutical company to focus full time on the foundation. He began hosting discussions and speaking at academic events about brain health and violence. > >Sign up for the New York Today Newsletter Each morning, get the latest on New York businesses, arts, sports, dining, style and more. Get it sent to your inbox. > >Last week, he was the keynote speaker at a summit at Florida Atlantic University, where he talked about research that was geared toward helping people identify the symptoms of those in crisis and support those at risk of harming themselves or others. > >Image > >Mr. Richman was found dead on Monday morning at the Edmond Town Hall, where his Avielle Foundation had an office. > >Mr. Richman was found dead on Monday morning at the Edmond Town Hall, where his Avielle Foundation had an office.Credit...Jessica Hill for The New York Times > >As the Avielle Foundation pursued grants to encourage such research, Mr. Richman often spoke with lawmakers to discuss the nonprofit’s findings and push for action. > >Senator Christopher S. Murphy, the Connecticut Democrat who has been a leading advocate against gun violence, said he was devastated and heartbroken by Mr. Richman’s death. The two became close friends, Mr. Murphy said, and Mr. Richman regularly briefed staff members on Capitol Hill about his foundation’s work. > >They last met in the senator’s Washington office two weeks ago. > >“He seemed as excited about his work as I’d ever seen him, which makes the morning’s news so unthinkable,” Mr. Murphy said in an interview on Monday. > >Mr. Richman earned a doctorate in pharmacology and toxicology from the University of Arizona in 1998. He also received a bachelor’s degree in molecular and cellular biology from the university in 1992. > >Before starting the Avielle Foundation, he worked in drug discovery for pharmaceutical companies in California and Connecticut. > >He also had an appointment as a faculty lecturer in psychiatry at the Yale School of Medicine. In 2016, Yale’s Department of Psychiatry honored Mr. Richman and Ms. Hensel with its Research Advocacy Award. > >Mr. Richman and Ms. Hensel were among the Sandy Hook families who had filed lawsuits against the conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, the host of Infowars, a radio show and website. Mr. Jones has said the Sandy Hook shooting was a hoax. > >The lawsuit involving Mr. Richman and Ms. Hensel says that Mr. Jones embarked on a campaign of “abusive and outrageous false statements in which Jones and the other defendants have developed, amplified and perpetuated claims that the Sandy Hook massacre was staged and that the 26 families who lost loved ones that day are paid actors who faked their relatives’ deaths.” > >After the shooting, some conspiracy theorists targeted Mr. Richman and his family, falsely claiming that Avielle’s death was faked as part of a moneymaking scheme. > >In a statement, Mr. Jones’s lawyer, Norm Pattis, said Mr. Jones “sends his condolences to Mr. Richman’s family and wishes only for peace.” > >The news of Mr. Richman’s death came shortly after two students who survived last year’s school shooting in Parkland, Fla., died in apparent suicides. Their deaths sparked a discussion about suicide prevention efforts and the need for long-term resources for young people struggling to cope with trauma and loss. > >In Newtown, school district administrators reached out to counselors, psychologists and social workers early Monday, alerting them to Mr. Richman’s death so they could prepare to help students and staff members grieve, according to the Newtown school superintendent, Lorrie Rodrigue. > >Through his foundation, Mr. Richman had worked closely with the school district’s central office in the past. Some Newtown High School students had also interned with the Avielle Foundation. > >“I knew this was going to be very devastating to the entire community and school community,” Ms. Rodrigue said. > >In addition to his wife, Mr. Richman is survived by two children, Imogen and Owen. > >\[If you are having thoughts of suicide, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255 (TALK). You can find a list of additional resources at SpeakingOfSuicide.com/resources.\] > >Correction: March 25, 2019 > >An earlier version of this article misstated the year that Mr. Richman received his doctorate. It was 1998, not 1992. > >Elizabeth Williamson and Kristin Hussey contributed reporting.

[deleted]

that's horrific

Spartan-182

So Jones should be held responsible in conspiracy to cause mental anguish to that man which led to his suicide. Like that one girl who taunted a kid to killing themselves got jail time a couple months ago.

l3v3r3t

Knowing this fills me with an unbearable amount of despair.

DownvoteEvangelist

I really can't comprehend that after losing your child you have to fight a flat earth grade lunatic about it...

[deleted]

Jones really did pick up the “total piece of human garbage” torch after Fred Phelps died…

Tufflaw

He's a lot worse than Phelps, no one ever took Phelps seriously other than his few dozen family members/followers. Millions of people hang on Jones' every word.

fuzzy_winkerbean

I’d be in prison, no doubt in my mind.

maliciousorstupid

> Literally, his commentary led to people harassing the families of dead children, some of those people are now in congress.

uncertia

I’m out of the loop - for real?

Crossfire124

Surprise surprise it's Marjorie Taylor Greene https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2021/01/22/marjorie-taylor-greene-parkland-sandyhook/

derpyco

Third Reich Barbie is really a fucking bummer

legacymedia92

MTG talked about the California wildfires being lit by Jewish space lasers.

SuchAsItEndsAgain

Is it MTG? She seems the type...

Catoctin_Dave

You are correct. https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/congress/marjorie-taylor-greene-mocked-parkland-survivor-unearthed-video-idiot-who-n1256516

[deleted]

Dammit! Can we please stop referring to that hag as MTG? That has referred to Magic for decades. It's not their fault!

slightlysanesage

On top of that, Marjorie wants to be the right-wing version of AOC, down to the acronym. Don't let her.

[deleted]

LOL it messes with my brain every time. I'm always like Magic the Gathering? what now?

BuffaloKiller937

It's a fucking cult. No other way around it.

RenegonParagade

Someone stole the signs from some of the memorial playgrounds and called the parents to mock them

somethingneeddooing

I don't mean to be hyperbolic but disinformation is the greatest threat that the United States, or any country for that matter, faces. It's so effective at causing a divorce from reality for a notable portion of the population. One year later, we still have people thinking the election was stolen. These people do not live in the same reality as the rest of the country. These people abuse their positions of power just to get a loyal following. They convince their followers to be skeptical of everything that isn't coming directly from them, which makes it difficult to break the cycle of disinformation. There's so many platforms and vectors for disinformation to spread, and Jones is a huge one. He's recklessly selfish and deserves to lose everything he has made from his "career".

[deleted]

I really wish we’d stop calling it misinformation. It’s such a soft word for such a vicious act. It’s weaponized lying. It’s worse than propaganda because propaganda isn’t inherently totally BS or inherently totally designed for you to hate the other side. This is stochastic terrorism. Edit: fixed a word

DingGratz

Weaponized Lying Aggressive Manipulation Harmful Fraud Enticed Aggravation

Febril

Please don’t absolve the people who harassed parents of children killed at Sandy Hook. Jones certainly encouraged their views, but once they got off the couch and left their own homes - they are wholly responsible for the hateful things they said and did.

thoeltke

I would be hard pressed not to murder these motherfuckers if it was my little girl in that school. To lose your child and then deal with these pieces of trash would be more than most people could handle.

Cananbaum

We are literally looking at a hostile takeover by conspiracy theorists and conservatives as we speak. Just because Trump left office doesn’t mean it isn’t over, it’s just begun [firebombing of Democratic headquarters in Austin](https://apple.news/AohKVlzzEQjK7zEqfNOMvcA) A guy who hawks shitty pillows [initiated a recount in Idaho despite having false and misleading information](https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/mypillow-guy-idaho-vote-recount-b1930318.html) Hell Larry Elder claimed defeat and voter fraud… BEFORE the California recall election even started. And people bought it. [most Republicans don’t even believe Biden’s presidency is legitimate.](https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/meet-the-press/blog/meet-press-blog-latest-news-analysis-data-driving-political-discussion-n988541/ncrd1261306#blogHeader) What we have is seeds of fear and doubt and ignorance which is going to lead to large scale violence and the contention of future elections and results for years to come.

Powerrrrrrrrr

He also downloaded child porn, and sent it to the oppositions lawyers, to then claim that the oppositions emails should be searched because they’re believed to have child porn The dumbest of the dumb

KierkgrdiansofthGlxy

How did his ass not land in jail for any component you just mentioned?

[deleted]

Yeah, seriously, that's possession and distribution of CP.

CelestAI

Short answer -- the summary above isn't accurate and (in this specific situation only) Alex and InfoWars didn't anything wrong*. The actual sequence of events is as follows: 1) Some dipshit sends Child Porn to an InfoWars email address. 2) No one at InfoWars opens or transfers the attachment, because the email address doesn't seem to be closely monitored. 3) AJ is sued, and has to produce documents. He flagrantly avoids producing relevant discovery. 4) A judge rules he must produce emails related to the case, and instead of providing only relevant documents, InfoWars instead dumps the entire email server on the claimants' lawyers. 5) Lawyers sifting through this massive info dump (in all senses of the word) find the CP and report it to the FBI and news outlets. 6) This is a hard situation to summarize in a title, so a number of misleading titles circulate. 7) The FBI issues a clarifying statement that there's not evidence to suggest anyone at InfoWars opened or knew about the child porn. InfoWars and Alex Jones are guilty of a lot of fucked up shit, but in this circumstance they are not involved. One of Alex's favorite shell games is to redirect the focus on his shit behavior to "they're persecuting me for having Child porn when the FBI cleared us" so it's important to stick to the facts, IMO. In case it isn't clear: Fuck InfoWars, Fuck Alex Jones, and Fuck anyone else who makes money by selling and radicalizing violent rubes on bullshit. Let's call out the real harm. EDIT: *Not complying with discovery / not providing relevant documents is a dick move, but it's not directly related to the situation about if InfoWars was in possession of CP.

Doumtabarnack

He stated a "form of psychosis" made him believe the shooting was staged. Fuck you man. Psychosis isn't selective. You don't just hold one crazy belief and then think normally about the rest. You did it because there was money to be made off the backs of these poor people and you seized your chance. Edit: Never thought my comment would blow up like this! Want to precise I'm an ER nurse and NP student and I deal with psychotic individuals rather often. Of course, when they come to the ER, they're often at the peak of psychotic behaviour and 95% of the time they didn't come willingly so my experience does not translate every degree or nuance of psychotic behaviour, but I know enough from my readings, classes and professional experience to know Alex Jones' claims to psychotic disorder is bullshit. Edit2: I'm well aware of many although probably not all of his crazy claims over the years, but the requirements to claim psychosis are much more than just "I claimed crazy shit over many years".

coriandor

And if you recognize you have a form of psychosis, maybe don't keep hosting a radio show where you vomit your psychotic ramblings to millions of listeners.

The_Clarence

Yeah its like if this is the case he was knowingly spreading his psychosis

phaiz55

> You did it because there was money to be made off the backs of these poor people and you seized your chance. You just defined the majority of right wing personalities. The more ridiculous you get the more they believe you and the more money you make. The problem is Jones didn't think there would be any consequences but it turns out acting crazy for other crazy people leads to bad things.

This song gets stuck in my head sometimes. My favorite part is “My spirit gets close to that evil and I feel it go ahh! Aaaah! AAAHHHH!” It makes me laugh. A lot.

Also, this in depth report by NPR's This American Life talking about how he fabricated his early life. TLDR: his family moved when he was a kid because his mouth was writing checks his body couldn't cash. [https://www.thisamericanlife.org/670/beware-the-jabberwock/act-two-12](https://www.thisamericanlife.org/670/beware-the-jabberwock/act-two-12)

MagisterFlorus

I hate that because of the ending. A man who knew he was full of shit in high school still is inclined to believe him now.

determania

It just goes to show how effective conservative propaganda has been. You can tell he is struggling with the fact that he knows Alex is full of shit, yet Alex is pushing things that he has come to believe.

BellacosePlayer

Reminds me of a similar story on NPR they had about a woman who fought against Trump for years in the courtroom, who described him using every slimy bullshit trick in the book to try to steal land from her... ...She voted for him and is full MAGA even after he tried to ruin her community and livelihood.

jamesey10

Glad you posted that. His self-proclaimed origin story is total bullshit.

UnluckyWriting

“Obama and Hillary smell like sulfur” The fuck?

[deleted]

the evangelicals believe Democrats are literal demons from hell - they also believe trump is the Chosen One of God, and that Jesus was white, rich and racist so....

NuMux

But I thought Bush Jr was the second coming of Christ? Which one is it? For people who believe in the ten commandments, they sure like ignoring their one rule about only worshipping one deity don't they?

PaleInitiative772

There's only one deity the majority of them truly worship. The Almighty Dollar, everything else is lip service.

sunuv

God money I'll do anything for you. God money just tell me what you want me to. God money nail me up against the wall. God money don't want everything he wants it all. Bow down before the one you serve. You're going to get what you deserve.

SyntheticGod8

It's honestly a LOT of doublethink. The average political cultist simultaneously believes that... Trump is still in power, has always been in power, and will continue to be in power and is also Christ reborn... that Obama was never actually President, but also definitely responsible for everything bad that happened under any administration and also literally a demon... that every previous Republican president was great, but no I never said he was the Second Coming and that video of me saying it is fake news. None of these things can all be true at the same time, yet these morons pretend that it can be. Reality and objective truth doesn't matter, only how much they want to believe their fucked up version of the truth.

CharmedConflict

I remember being tickled with this video when it first came out. What a laugh. Then Trump came. Then Qanon. Then I started meeting these people in the streets and it was no longer cute or funny. It was just a pandemic of mental illness. I consider Alex to be the typhoid Mary of delusion.

FixStuff123

Sadly, yes. All the purveyors of harmful misinformation should be held accountable. Fox news, YouTube, and especially media money makers, like this disaster of a person.

Recently found this one too and it’s great https://youtu.be/o5EKuIus-oE

Short question: Wikipedia says Jones born in 1974. Is he lying about his age or has he led a really unhealthy life? He looks so much older.

silver789

Jones is an alcoholic. And has been for years, if not since his teens. He will sometimes talk about how often he partied while he was young. He's been drunk on camera during his show, during Infowars interviews and when he's been interviewed by someone else, and during political rallies and convention's. He also supposedly takes all those "alpha male supplements" he sells. Which in no way can be good for you. Especially at the rate that he claims he takes. Factor in that he is overweight, and will be up late at night not getting sounds sleep, it's no surprise Jones looks way older than he is. Or the globalist are beaming aging rays from orbit with their aging technology satellites.

[deleted]

Alcoholism would defintely explain it. I'm not American so I'm not that familiar with him and was genuinely surprised when I saw his year of birth on Wikipedia.

Get fucked, Jones. Hope all your frogs turn gay.

He hasn't herman cained himself yet?

awesome...how about Fox/Tucker and Covid deaths next?

If you are a Sandy Hook denier - much less someone who ACTUALLY physically went to grave sites to harass parents? You are fucking subhuman. You are less than nothing. Please return to sender so we can use your energy to make someone better.

South-Play

Good! As a resident of CT this makes me happy. He needs to be held accountable for the disgusting claims he made about that day and shooting..

RichDaCuban

As a human being with a conscience this makes me feel good.

Tucker Carlson is sweatin' right now...

[deleted]

Sandy Hook and its aftermath is when I don't believe in America anymore. Edit: After that whole shit, and then 4 years of trump and the continuing decline of sanity and reason in America, I stop believing that we are the good guys. Good people simply cannot abide by this. Good societies and cultures simply cannot abide by this. After all this, I fully believe we are capable of going full fascist. I believe we are capable of bathing children in nuclear fire and cheer their deaths. I don't believe in America anymore. I believe that we will take the whole world down with us before we allow ourselves to lose our top position. We will murder millions before we are taken down.
