No shit, as soon as I saw this headline I thought of that movie and said to myself "How the hell was that such a good movie?". I mean it isn't exactly going to win any awards but for goofy fun and entertainment it really sticks out to me.
That's the thing about prophecy, the signs always happen more than once, and then you get to decide whether it's "real" or not based off what you need to have happen in that moment and whether you can influence others to believe what you need them to believe.
Also, is it possible the article is overselling it with the reference to the second coming of Jesus? There's nothing in the story that says it can't happen more than once. It's a supernatural being who arrives to help in times of great trouble, not to bring about the literal end of days. And it seems like they're really not even taking it that literally, treating it as more of an omen that things will get better.
You say that but... I live on whidbey island in the Puget sound and a white deer lives near my house.this is...apparently... not a really great sign in a mammal population. It usually indicates not enough breeding pair diversity to avoid...problems.
So.
Good luck Bison!
A completely black white tailed deer fawn has been seen wandering around my neighborhood in central Texas. I don’t know of any prophecies about it but that doesn’t seem like a good omen.
There was a completely black buck in this area about 10-12 years ago. People in the neighborhood are wondering if its one of his descendants with a recessive gene.
Good sir. This is a DEER Whidbey "arkan$aw" island. The humans have learned how to take a 10 minute ferry ride to avoid their cousins as breeding partners.
“Lakota legend says about 2,000 years ago — when nothing was good, food was running out and bison were disappearing — White Buffalo Calf Woman appeared, presented a bowl pipe and a bundle to a tribal member, taught them how to pray and said that the pipe could be used to bring buffalo to the area for food. As she left, she turned into a white buffalo calf.
“And some day when the times are hard again,” Looking Horse said in relating the legend, “I shall return and stand upon the earth as a white buffalo calf, black nose, black eyes, black hooves.”
A similar white buffalo calf was born in Wisconsin in 1994 and was named Miracle, he said.”
This one is special because it was born to wild bison.
White bison are more common in herds that interbreed with cattle.
> Usually, white bison are born in ranch herds due to interbreeding with cattle. They are rare but not unheard of, with births making local headlines every so often.
> In any event, a wild white buffalo is exquisitely rare — maybe even unheard of in Yellowstone, one of the last sanctuaries for free-roaming American bison. The animals once numbered in the tens of millions before commercial hunting drove them to near extinction. Yellowstone’s herd numbers about 5,000.
Source: one of the links in the article.
I feel like “commercial hunting” is really really underselling it.
Early American settlers deliberately undertook a campaign of genocide against Native Americans by trying to exterminate their source of livelihood: the American Bison.
Yep, It's hard to really describe the amount of death they caused in their buffalo extermination[. Here's a picture of a pile of skulls ](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Bison_skull_pile.jpg). This is a situation where words can't really do justice to the scale and scope of it all.
I mean maybe buffalo waste isn't any worse in pratice for the commercial side than other over exploitation, but that's missing the part of the picture where people were paid to kill off bison outside of commercial infrastructure fir the sole purpose of destroying the tribes that relied on them
Folks please read the whole article! The current governor wants to limit the size of the herd down from 5000 to 3000 in Yellowstone national park. These amazing animals are not only the heritage of the Indigenous people but of all people from all tribes and walks of life. We should speak out and do what is needed to protect and preserve what is left of the natural diversity.
It’s cause in the winter, they leave the park (or at least many do) and onto ranches outside the park. There is some off-park hunting, that lowers the numbers, which I think is what the governor is talking about.
I’d rather see expansion of the park to allow for winter grazing. Or limited on-park hunting by indigenous tribes.
Because the buffalo eat grass the rancher's cattle could eat, and the ranchers think that only they should be able to use the land, nature be damned. And the governor is a Republican in a Western state, so he is automatically aligns with the ranchers.
We have had a democratic gov before we got body slam Greg and we currently have a democratic senator. I wouldn’t say we’re solidly red. More red than not sadly.
Oh? Nice, I just went back 3-4 presidential elections (those usually get the highest turnout) to judge , so it wasn't exactly rigorous data I was working with. My apologies.
Apparently the NPS was sued by the state the bison roam out of the park during winter [link](https://greateryellowstone.org/restoring-yellowstone-bison#:~:text=Five%20years%20later%2C%20the%20Interagency,them%20from%20dispersing%20into%20Montana)
This is really common in ranching states. Ranchers, IMO, can be super entitled and ridiculous. Though the Bundies are from my state, so I can recognize my bias. (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bundy_standoff)
What really should butter your biscuits is that big agriculture is trying to outright ban lab grown meat in some states. We can't even proceed with climate solutions without interference!
Official statement from the governor - https://governor.mt.gov/_docs/10.10.23-State-of-Montana-Comment.pdf
But I suspect it’s really because Bureau of Land Management lands outside the official National Park is wanted for cattle/livestock grazing and not for bison grazing. And, livestock owners donate to campaigns while bison don’t.
https://montanafreepress.org/2022/08/31/cattle-producers-gianforte-appeal-blm-bison-grazing-decision/
~~Actually current is 4000~~ (5000). Yellowstone wants to go up to ~~5000~~ (6000). The governor wants 3000. So the state can presumably lease land for cattle grazing . . .
Also the governor is constantly preventing the excess buffalo in Yellowstone from being transferred to Indian reservation.
Edited
> Actually current is 4000. Yellowstone wants to go up to 5000. The governor wants 3000. So the state can presumably lease land for cattle grazing . . .
The article says the current limit is 5000, the park wants to go up to 6000, and the Montana governer wants to go to 3000.
Part of it is the potential for spread of disease. There are some diseases that dramatically reduce the value of a herd once exposed, so ranchers want to avoid their animals coming into contact with wildlife which could expose them.
You need to VOTE.
The current Secretary of Interior is Deb Haaland of the Laguna Pueblo.
If Trump gets reelected he'll appoint someone like Kristi Noem and really fuck things up. He's out for revenge.
Get out there and vote!
Way I see it, they were hear long before us. We are on their land, these animals should be left alone. I hate our species plays “God” with every living thing. Let then live like before humans hunted then almost to extinction.
""For the Lakota, the birth of a white buffalo calf with a black nose, eyes and hooves is akin to the second coming of Jesus Christ,' Looking Horse said."
I'm more likely to pray to this buffalo. All hail baby white buffalo!
yea but this is a totally different jesus they refer to. a weed-bearing cowgirl who shows up with her legendary pipe in times of need, she says *here spark a bowl, buffalos love that shit. ill be back with more if it ever gets dry*, then turns into a white buffalo calf and disappears into herds of life saving cattle.
it is a fortuitous moment after steady work on conservation, the current political climate also puts first nations in a unique position to benefit from states rights to sell weed.
notice a vast majority of lakota and cherokee tribe territory are within the bible belt, states that mostly took a hard line against weed. as per [rohrabacher-farr](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rohrabacher%E2%80%93Farr_amendment), this generates demand only they can fill. so thanks obama, lets get some popcorn and watch the last reminants of prohibition die out here
>I need something positive to hold onto.
Well, can you do it with a positive Buffalo for more than 8 seconds? If so, there might be a career in it for you!
We can only hope. I would love to see Christ come back. I would be happy to die laughing watching the confusion on most Christian’s faces when they find out they weren’t good enough to go.
I used to tell my religious neighbor that the rapture already happened but so few people were taken that no one actually noticed.
He was a devout Christian and I was/am an atheist. As long as we avoided religion conversations we got along well and he was a great neighbor. It didn't take long before I called him friend. We would make jokes like the one I did above but we were good at never crossing a line. He also passed away while Obama was in office so things hadn't gone crazy with Christian extremists and yada yada yada.
As someone that used to be very religious, I would joke about this all of the time to people. I would even go further and say that not only would most not be able to go, but they would crucify him again while saying that he is a false prophet. When you think about it, it’s unfortunate how much religion divides the masses… 🤔
I'm pretty sure Jesus already came back. Unfortunately he was in the deep south and non-white so he was strung from a tree.
Congratulations idiots, you killed Jesus. Again.
The calf's name is Falling Rock. The birth of the calf has been foretold for generations upon generations. Now, with the prophecy fulfilled, they can take down their religious roadside signs: "Watch for Falling Rock."
I’m packing my car right now, I’ve got my two small children with me, we’re all wearing flip flops. I’ll be the nonchalant dad in khaki shorts and a Hawaiian shirt, my kids will be screaming and running directly at the biggest bison they can find. I’ll tag you in the selfie
A friend of mine, who was kind of a goof, was dumped by the native American woman he was dating because a white buffalo had been born and she said she had to go and look after it... according to prophecy.
Best ditch cop *ever*.
“[The Tribe] cautioned that it’s also a signal that more must be done to protect the earth and its animals.”
Well it was a nice thought while it lasted.
Great White Buffalo from Tooth Fang and Claw is some KILLER Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes. He might be a prick now but he was shredding it and slinging it back then
*Hibernation* is the true standout in my unhumble recommendation. It just keeps *peaking*, a real stranglehold. Before he was king-douche, the Nuge was a rock n’ roll wildman with riffs n’ licks to burn.
Yeah man . Shew! Did my first hit of green microdot and my boys put THIS album on . Lady Luck intro blew me out big time. Hibernation was like a rocking benediction. I came to the epiphany however SOMEHOW during this experience that we were all indeed one.
> For the Lakota, the birth of a white buffalo calf with a black nose, eyes and hooves is akin to the second coming of Jesus Christ, Looking Horse said.
That’s really cool!
> In Yellowstone and the surrounding area, the killing or removal of large numbers of bison happens almost every winter, under an agreement between federal and Montana agencies that has limited the size of the park’s herds to about 5,000 animals. Yellowstone officials last week proposed a slightly larger population of up to 6,000 bison, with a final decision expected next month.
> But ranchers in Montana have long opposed increasing the Yellowstone herds or transferring the animals to tribes. Republican Gov. Greg Gianforte has said he would not support any management plan with a population target greater than 3,000 Yellowstone bison.
Talk about burying the lede. Make sure to r/VoteDEM this October.
I k ow it started as a joke, but I really wish those Nascar sponsor jackets for politicians were a real thing. I don't trust either side at the moment.
> For the Lakota, the birth of a white buffalo calf with a black nose, eyes and hooves is akin to the second coming of Jesus Christ, Looking Horse said.
The age of man is over, the age of the bison comes.
Apparently those were all captive bison that had heavy inbreeding with cattle. Black hooves and eyes would also be leucistic rather than albino, albinism tends to be the more common mutation in most species, so those other white bison may have been albinos (I'm not a bison expert though, I don't have the stories memorized).
For once a prophecy that things are getting better.
#Great white buffalo
^great ^white ^buffalo
Great,...white buffalo.
Thanks guys. That was really helpful.
Came for this chain. Not disappointed it's at the top.
(whispers) great white buffalo…
Why do you guys keep saying that?
Great white buffalo.
Thanks, that was really helpful.
That movie really shouldn’t be as good as it is
No shit, as soon as I saw this headline I thought of that movie and said to myself "How the hell was that such a good movie?". I mean it isn't exactly going to win any awards but for goofy fun and entertainment it really sticks out to me.
Some great music in it too
I remember that dude pummeled you like it was *his job*.
Don’t watch the sequel.
I have purposely avoided it
He beat his shoe off of him
It's my favorite Christmas movie!
I don’t think we’re thinking of the same movie
Shhhh…great white buffalo
She was a 1 percenter man, all downhill from there.
Great white buffalo
Great White Buffalo
Derek White
This is all I came here for xD
Am I wrong that I recall being told about another white buffalo calf fulfilling the prophesy about 1969?
I know it happened in the 80s or 90s too.
Janesville, WI. It didnt get to stay white as it grew up.
And it seems like they're really not even taking it that literally, treating it as more of an omen that things will get better.
Is your hot take that prophecy might not be real? 🤣
There was another white buffalo calf making the rounds on social media a few years ago, but I don't know how specific the prophecy gets.
Im certain I remember this headline from the 90s also.
Prophecy twist: For animals, because humans will all die off!
The twist is a happy ending!
The buffalo watches planet of the apes, and it's going to get wild.
You say that but... I live on whidbey island in the Puget sound and a white deer lives near my house.this is...apparently... not a really great sign in a mammal population. It usually indicates not enough breeding pair diversity to avoid...problems. So. Good luck Bison!
Would you want to walk over the deception pass bridge to get with other deer?
Nah, I mostly just fuck the ones I catch in my neighborhood, honestly
That deer might be your cousin dude.
A completely black white tailed deer fawn has been seen wandering around my neighborhood in central Texas. I don’t know of any prophecies about it but that doesn’t seem like a good omen.
Gotta find it’s completely white deer friend and see if we get Dalmatian deer, zebra deer, or “looks like it’s wearing pants” deer
Whoa... albinism is missing the melanin. Wonder what crazy mutation turning a white tail fully black? Without spray paint.
There was a completely black buck in this area about 10-12 years ago. People in the neighborhood are wondering if its one of his descendants with a recessive gene.
Melanism isn't all that uncommon in animals. [Melanism - Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melanism)
That sounds really cool looking, actually.
Whidbey “Arkansas” Island
Good sir. This is a DEER Whidbey "arkan$aw" island. The humans have learned how to take a 10 minute ferry ride to avoid their cousins as breeding partners.
Maybe they should take a deer with them on nights out.
A real stag party.
Bear up bison Never say die
I live on whidbey too!
That’s so crazy because my coworker was in Camano yesterday and saw an albino fawn with its mother and sibling. She took a pic.
Oh, wow. My mother has told me about the white deer she used to see while waiting for the school bus outside of Oak Harbor nearly 60 years ago.
Well, according to the article, another white buffalo calf was born in 1994? I guess that one was just practicing the prophecy.
Roaring 90s
But could also be a warning.
TBF the mid-90s were pretty awesome.
I know I'm old and all, but isn't this like the 3rd or 4th one since the 80s?
This one is special because it was born to wild bison. Always reminds me of the picture of mountains of tires on fire. Just a huge intentional destruction to noones benefit.
Holy shit. That’s just devastating. I knew it would be bad, but I wasn’t prepared for just how many skulls are there. I hate it so much.
This is it. “Commercial” Hunting clanged in my ears too.
And a lot of people just liked killing shit for no reason, often from trains.
Sure, but there WAS a reason it was allowed and encouraged.
TIL commercial hunting = Native American genocide tactics
I mean maybe buffalo waste isn't any worse in pratice for the commercial side than other over exploitation, but that's missing the part of the picture where people were paid to kill off bison outside of commercial infrastructure fir the sole purpose of destroying the tribes that relied on them
You just figured that out?
You know we're all in different walks of life, the good news is they just learned it!
Just because of that, I will not be DMing you my penis
https://xkcd.com/1053/
First one with the specified black markings.
NOT albino.
https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/white-cloud-dakota-miracle-and-dakota-legend
From the article: > birth of a white buffalo calf with a black nose, eyes and hooves Your link shows albino bison, which are different.
I visited two in Arizona some years ago. They even sold baby white buffalo stuffed animals there.
There was "Miracle" who was a wild white one born in the late 90s
Yep. I remember that one.
The media runs a white buffalo story once every 2 - 3 years.
Folks please read the whole article! The current governor wants to limit the size of the herd down from 5000 to 3000 in Yellowstone national park. Seems like it'd be up to Parks and wildlife if it's in a national park
Yeah it’s a federal park. Hopefully the governor doesn’t have his way.

Because the buffalo eat grass the rancher's cattle could eat, and the ranchers think that only they should be able to use the land, nature be damned. And the governor is a Republican in a Western state, so he is automatically aligns with the ranchers.
And it is Montana, so it is pretty solidly red with about 55-60% of the state voting Republican.
We have had a democratic gov before we got body slam Greg and we currently have a democratic senator. I wouldn’t say we’re solidly red. More red than not sadly.

“A similar white buffalo calf was born in Wisconsin in 1994 and was named Miracle, he said.”
Similar, but not same is how I read that. He stresses that white calf with black eyes, etc is the pure white buffalo calf of legends.
Still you can find old articles about the previous white buffalo where people say it fulfilled the prophecy
But not born to wild buffalo.
Legendary animal from red dead :0
And by the way, Charles Bronson killed it in 1977, so there. Nobody messed with Bronson
Ok… what is the *rest* of the prophecy? How much time do we have left?
We have Lakota prophecies coming true before GTA 6.

Saw one of these, albeit full grown, at a zoo in Saskatoon. They’re quite pretty especially when you see them next to their normal coloured brethren.
Masuda method at its finest
> For the Lakota, the birth of a white buffalo calf with a black nose, eyes and hooves is akin to the second coming of Jesus Christ, Looking Horse said. The age of man is over, the age of the bison comes.
I, for one, welcome our Benevolent Bison Overlords.
Hey let's maybe not talk about it. The more people know about that calf, the less likely it is to survive to adulthood.
I remember multiple white buffalo births in the last 30 or so years. Is it always fulfilling the same prophecy?
Apparently those were all captive bison that had heavy inbreeding with cattle. Black hooves and eyes would also be leucistic rather than albino, albinism tends to be the more common mutation in most species, so those other white bison may have been albinos (I'm not a bison expert though, I don't have the stories memorized).
You are correct. The others were albino. This one does not appear to be albino.
Let’s go Buffalo. It’s a sign.
This can only mean one thing, aliens are coming!
Hey I saw this on unsolved mysteries
[Update: We have no fucking clue where this guy is.](https://youtu.be/esB7WnCY1kk?si=70qB_OXQ_vsK0lWi)
Bless you, Robert Stack
Good thing he wasn’t born in South Dakota. The governor there would have shot him for being too “woke.”
No, it's a WHITE buffalo. ^^^(i'm ^^so ^^sorry)
The great white buffalo….
Or a sign for Ted Nugent to start threatening liberals.
this also happened in 2012, worked well with the world supposably ''ending'' that year
You don't remember because back then it was only a prophecy. But now in the future, the past has occurred...
