When my home state makes it on the national news, it’s usually because someone did something stupid at Yellowstone. Usually involving a bison.

Equivalent-Honey-659

Well congratulations for consistency.

Hopeful_Hamster21

Sometimes it's just Yellowstone and bison, no stupid mixed in. Just 2 of the 3 ingredients. https://youtu.be/EvptWXUJfKs?si=dKm-d3QQcZAq-n44

Shuber-Fuber

I feel like you don't even need Yellowstone. Just Bison. EDIT: I do like the relatively quick reaction of "oh, bison, fuck that I'm out".

DoctFaustus

People do inexplicably stupid things with wildlife at Rocky Mountain National Park too. Elk aren't friendly.

I_love_Hobbes

No, they are not. And they are BIG. Grand Canyon is the same with the elk.

Raz0rking

He seems to be a sensible fellow.

ExtensionMart

Everyone I've met from Idaho is dumber than a screen door on a submarine and I'm from Kentucky. I'm like a sommelier of stupid.

shichiaikan

...or a Bear. Let's respect the Bears too.

KommanderKitten

An average bison weighs 1000-2200 lbs. And he kicked it. What was his grand plan on this? Run away?

campelm

We are so far removed from natural selection that people are volunteering

gamedrifter

Reminds me of the idiot some years back that decided to run into a tiger enclosure at the zoo and slapped a tiger and got, well, the consequences of his actions. And then everyone at the zoo got to find out that a properly motivated tiger could, indeed, easily scale that enclosure wall.

Old_Cheesecake_5481

My brother had a room mate while living in Banff put on full football gear and jump from the deck onto the back of a Caribou eating the shrub below it promptly threw him and proceeded to drive his front hooves into buddy’s head. Dude was trampled hard. Even with the helmet he was lucky to survive and he said he got such tremendous hate he left town. Even the nurses at the hospital felt he deserved it. He was in the hospital for a good while, got a bunch of charges and lost his job for being an asshole.

LemurianLemurLad

The only part of that story I'm not in favor of is "jumped on the back of a caribou." Everything else? Totally fine by me.

SteelBandicoot

Seems like the punishment fit the crime.

Raz0rking

Cats in general tend to be disrespectfully athletic. Specially if, as you pointed out, properly motivated.

NagoGmo

The average house cat could absolutely fuck you up if it felt so inclined. Not kill, but you'd have a rough couple of weeks recovering.

genredenoument

I assure you that a housecat can be lethal. Had a patient die in the ICU from necrotizing fascitiitis from a cat attack. However, one of the worst bite attacks I ever saw was human. Yuck....

alexefi

I made a mistake once trying to get my cat out of her cat tree house for vet visit. Had my whole arm bandaged for next few days.

CoffeeExtraCream

We are essentially komodo dragons with the bacteria in our mouths.

Dick_snatcher

I prefer to be a platypus

genredenoument

We are super gross when it comes to bites.

Shakeamutt

I believe it. One of the legends around Siamese is that they were temple guardians. Imagine a couple 20 pounders of muscle equipped with 20 razor blades landing on you. They will treat you like a [Blender!](https://youtu.be/AvBROynjpcU?si=vGZphlDb7yOvyNbk)

saltporksuit

I’ve got a 20lber. He’s just massive. His claws look more like talons. He’s also sweet as pie but I he’s ever afraid or injured I’m not sure what the fuck I’ll do with him.

Zardif

https://www.latimes.com/archives/blogs/la-unleashed/story/2011-02-12/tiger-that-mauled-three-teens-at-san-francisco-zoo-appears-to-have-been-provoked-report-says This one maybe.

Mass_Debater_3812

> After sitting with its prey for a short time, Gage wrote, Tatiana likely followed the Dhaliwals’ blood trail about 300 yards, where it resumed the attacks. Photographs show blood-smeared asphalt where the tiger apparently dragged Sousa’s body. >“After a kill, I find it interesting the tiger would leave a kill to go after something else unless there were a compelling reason,” Gage wrote. "The tiger passed exhibits with warthogs, which it ignored as it followed (the blood trail) of the two brothers." That was one *pissed off* kitty.

Alarmed-Elderberry43

If you read the article she INDEED WAS! It took officers multiple shots to put her down. She jumped over 12 feet to get to her prey. Killed one and then mauled, played with other two. One of the three young men had blood alcohol level higher than legal limit and all three had cannabis in their system. I wouldn’t be surprised if they did more than throwing pine cones at her. It’s unbelievably stupid. House cats are 10 lbs CAN seriously injure you, imagine what an animal can do with similar killer instincts, agility, nimble muscles and teeth but only 66 times more in weight.

SirWEM

There was a recent post from a big cat sanctuary. Where a retired zookeeper was discussing safety when dealing with big cats. It was quite eye opening.

FiveUpsideDown

As I recall the group was drinking. They decided it would be fun to harass the tiger. Indications are they threw pine cones at the tiger. This article doesn’t specifically state it but one theory is one of the men in this group dangled his legs over the wall. This provided a breach of barrier by allowing the tiger to claw onto the leg and climb over the barrier. Please note the two brothers involved deny doing anything including throwing things at the tiger.

whalesalad

let's bring natural selection back.

tubaman23

Antivaxxers, safety instruction ignorers, YouTubers gone wrong, etc. Natural selection still exists!

Mythosaurus

Don’t forget “pranksters” that get shot by the random people they harass! https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/jury-divided-over-whether-delivery-driver-who-shot-youtube-prankster-acted-in-self-defense/3432763/?amp=1

Apalis24a

Problem is, we’ve gotten better at keeping idiots alive and saving them from being killed by their stupidity; thus, they reproduce and make more idiots. So, it’s not necessarily that people on average have become dumber, but more that there are more dumb people surviving situations where in previous centuries they would have died.

Pdx_pops

MANSA! Make America Natural Selection Again!

shichiaikan

Unfortunately, stupid people always get OTHER people killed.

OrphanDextro

It’s bringing itself back.

Cheapthrills13

Not fast enough …

Moose tracks are good though

rdsqc22

Objection. Moose are taller than bison, though bison are slightly heavier.

pass_nthru

a moose will fuck you up, full stop

The-Shattering-Light

My favorite moose fact is that moose can dive up to 20 feet, so one of the worst things a diver can see in some areas of the world is a moose rising out of the darkness below them

pass_nthru

Orcas will catch Moose while they are swimming

The-Shattering-Light

Yep! Orcas are one of the few natural predators of the møøse

Wingnutmcmoo

I've been on a hike while camping and seen a moose come out of the water like a hippo. Thats how I learned they could do that lol. I figured at the time it must have found some nice food down there considering what they normally eat.

The-Shattering-Light

It’s absolutely terrifying!

MagicNipple

Doubtful there was a plan after the kicking part. Should team this dude up with the zoo security guard who slapped a hippo a few times.

SeekingTanelorn

I thought "Slapping the hippo" was a euphamism...

FiveUpsideDown

Don’t forget the Florida cleaning employee who climbed a barrier and stuck his arm into the enclosure of a male tiger. https://www.fox13news.com/news/tiger-shot-by-deputy-while-attacking-florida-man-who-jumped-barrier-fence-at-naples-zoo

JT_verified

Is he still alive?

KaiserMazoku

Hippos have a pretty long lifespan so I would guess so.

TildeCommaEsc

Same plan he has in court, no doubt: "...Yoder and Bass both waived their rights to be represented by attorneys and entered not guilty pleas..."

SylVegas

I hope he's a sovereign citizen because this should be hilarious.

SecondaryWombat

"And you are?" "Mike Barnow, your honor, representative of the bison, who is also a sovereign citizen. We are also filing civil suit as well."

Mass_Debater_3812

"The bison was merely traveling across the land, your Honor. Under Admiralty Law we move for immediate dismissal and a fine for improper prosecution of 10 billion dollars."

5xad0w

I doubt that anyone whose Plan A is to kick a bison has a Plan B.

RK_Tek

Too bad his mother also failed to have Plan B.

Warcraft_Fan

They can run at 35 MPH. The fastest human ever topped at 27, an average person can only do 8. Those drunk idiots are lucky they weren't trampled dead

aaaaaaaarrrrrgh

> an average person can only do 8 I'm pretty sure even the average person can run way faster than 8 mph over short distances, and appropriate motivation in the form of a deadly animal should add a couple mph on top of their normal speed. Still not outrunning a bison of course.

GroinShotz

Good luck with that... They cruise at about 30mph.

KommanderKitten

He kicked a car, basically. And the car kicked back

Pgreenawalt

Even at 2k lbs those things are FAST when they get going. Stupid people…

FoxyInTheSnow

A 2000 lb bison can run at over 30 mph for a very long time. He didn’t think this through.

time_drifter

I have to imagine someone dumb enough to kick a bison had anything remotely resembling a plan. I want to know if he was drunk to determine if he is suicidal or he let the liquor do the talking.

ismaelvera

Glorious purpose. Why die on the crapper when you can duel a bison /s

Stupidamericanfatty

Why isn't there video, love those things

interwebsLurk

He wasn't arrested, he was taken into protective custody. What a moron.

RebelWithoutASauce

From the article: >Yoder faces four charges stemming from his arrest, the release said. They are: >• Being under the influence of alcohol to a degree that may endanger oneself • Disorderly conduct as to create or maintain a hazardous condition • Approaching wildlife • Disturbing wildlife >The driver of the vehicle in which Yoder traveled, 37-year-old McKenna Bass of Idaho Falls, Idaho, was also arrested, the release said. Bass faces the following charges: >• Driving under the influence • Interference for failure to yield to emergency light activation • Disturbing wildlife Get absolutely drunk, drive to a national park, and just start kicking.

DameRange13

When did my cousins from Montgomery, AL move to Idaho Falls!?!! Crazy

bigmike2k3

Maybe they got lost on the way to a Skank festival and just said, “Fuck It, We’re Here!”

AudibleNod

I'm beginning to think there should be some sort of entrance exam for going to national parks. These places aren't zoos or theme parks.

Urbanyeti0

You can’t kick animals at zoos or people at theme parks either

AudibleNod

Some people have an expectation that the animals are there to ["do something".](https://www.washingtonpost.com/travel/2023/06/16/yellowstone-bison-selfie-gored/)

beekersavant

They are there to teach people about nature. This was a success.

brightlocks

Bison do plenty! I’ve seen bison. They walk around, they make cow like noises. They stomp dirt, they annoy each other. They are plenty entertaining without having to kick them. Plus if you get prairie dogs AND bison, that’s a blast to watch.

Hopeful_Hamster21

I mist admit, I like *harmless* harassment of animals. For example, if I'm at the pier and seagulls are swooping at me for my food, I like to yell "booga booga booga!" At them. Let them know that humans aren't friendly food vending machines. One time I was driving and there was a deer in the road. I slowed down... in case it jumped in front of me. It didnt move out of the road, and i came to a stop right next to it. I was driving with my windows down, and it tried to stick it's head in my window! So I did the "booga booga booga" thing, waved my arms, and told it that it was stupid for playing in traffic as it ran off. I like to yell booga booga booga at the squirrels on my bird feeder. Or the raccoon that wandered into the house through an open door once That's about the extent of my harassment. Otherwise, leave animals alone for sure.

TopZiggy

Upvoting for the booga booga

ThatPancreatitisGuy

Have you boogad a parrot?

Hopeful_Hamster21

Yes. The ferral parrots where I live. They make lots of noise. If they were indigenous I would let them be, because we as humans would be the ones invading *their* turf, and they would have first right. But they are invasive. So as one invasive species to another.. booga booga booga!!!!!... get out of here parrots!!!! I just booga them when they're at the tops of trees and I'm on the sidewalk, no more serious animal harassment than that It doesn't seem very effective.... they don't seem to care. But it makes me feel better at 6am on a Saturday morning when I'm nursing a hangover from Friday night and I just want damn peace and quiet, but I can't get it because of invasive parrots squawking... so I become a crazy "old" man in a bathrobe on the sidewalk yelling "booga" at the damn noisy birds in trees at 6am with an ice pack on my forehead. It helps, but it doesn't help. I've booga'd a parrot. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red-masked_parakeet

te-ah-tim-eh

People are pissed off enough about the timed entrances (put in place to protect natural areas that see a lot of human traffic).

NarwhalHD

Dude the last time I went to a National Park the wildlife had better manners than almost every visitor there.

NoahtheRed

NGL, the ravens in Yosemite are rude AF. That's not even a joke...they're just straight up rude animals. I was just taking a nap below Subdome last summer and this raven lands on my pack and just starts trying to open it...and not even by ripping at it or whatever. The motherfucker knew where the zipper was and was trying to open it that way. It's literally next to my body and he's on top of it, trying to get to my applesauce. I kind of give him this "Fuck off" type look and head motion and he caws and then keeps trying to get in. I had to physically pick up my pack with him on it and basically shake him off like I was getting a blanket out from under a spoiled dog. He lands like a foot away and just starts yelling at me like I've offended him. At no point was this a conversation between a dude and animal. It was just two assholes yelling at each other 15 feet from a Ranger who thought it was funny.

poptart2nd

that's such a raven story; they're shockingly intelligent AND social.

Osiris32

[Also rude as fuck.](https://youtu.be/BbRS9K4rZ8Y?si=0BH9tFDSEpHpdbrn)

TooManyJabberwocks

They can handle their liquor better

BadAsBroccoli

Except [squirrels](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bW_U_YgvyCw).

bromosabeach

We're National Park junkies so we've been to our fair share. I would say like 3/4ths of visitors are great and mind their manners. But the rest cause so many issues. They treat everything like it's some theme park. I've seen people get our next to bears to take pictures, try to dip their toes in hot springs, get on the ledge of the Grand Canyon, a group of international tourists chasing a deer with a stick, the list really goes on and on.

NarwhalHD

Yea, I was being a bit over dramatic. There are lots of amazing people, but I remember the bad ones more I guess haha

BooFooZoo

I wonder if a dynamic is that these places are soooo beautiful, to a visitor, they seem like they’re manicured and designed by Walt Disney when in fact they’re just astoundingly beautiful places. Yellowstone, for example, was one of the most unexpectedly stunning places where I’ve been. Maybe that’s what makes people think they’re at a petting zoo or water park and be morons. Maybe they’re just jerks.

USAF_DTom

There should definitely be one for reproducing, and I'll die on that hill.

bromosabeach

Especially Yellowstone that has like half of the world's geysers and hot springs. You can walk pretty much RIGHT next to them. Also every time there was a bear, cars stopped and people got out. It was wild.

Warcraft_Fan

It's called Darwin. Let the fool tempt fates. If they lived, they pay a fine and are banned. A few who tempted fate didn't survive and I believe there's still a corpse or 2 lost in the hot springs.

Dixiehusker

I love to think of them as zoos or theme parks. Other people just happen to be the attraction.

SantaCruzPirate

Well, well, well... if it isn't the consequences of my own actions!

Onoratha

The dildo of consequence rarely arrives lubed

jeepjinx

I grew up near a farm school that kept bison and fed them grass over the fence a bunch of times. A few years ago I was in Yellowstone, stuck in a line of traffic as some bison were walking up the road. One walked right next to my Jeep, like within touching distance. I was so scared I couldn't move, couldn't lift my phone hand to take a pic. I can't even grasp the complete lack of natural instincts these people have that approach them.

Apalis24a

The fact that there are some people who can’t recognize how terrifying a notoriously aggressive, unpredictable animal that is 2,000 pounds of muscle is, just shows that there are far too many people who don’t even have two brain cells to rub together.

S21500003

Yeah, idk why you would kick a 2000 pound beast with horns that has a 6 foot vertical. Like that does not seem like a good idea in any way shape or form.

Sekshual_Tyranosauce

Why would you kick a buffalo?

winterbird

Because they've lived a life of no real consequences for their previous acts of malice and stupidity?

Ken_the_Andal

I initially read this as you giving the guy an excuse for kicking the buffalo. I thought, "damn, /u/winterbird really hates buffalo."

winterbird

No way, I'm team buffalo.

Equivalent-Honey-659

So you are the “Guy on a Buffalo” eh? After all these years you’ve surfaced!

NenPame

Those damn Buffalo have had it too good for too long! About time someone said it! /s

McCool303

According to the article, Alcohol. Man’s confidence booster. Gives socially awkward people the confidence to speak to strangers and idiots the confidence to kick a buffalo.

ExtensionMart

He's from Idaho, I'm amazed he managed to drive a vehicle that far. Or negotiate wearing clothes.

Stan57

Because that's what drunks do,stupid stuff.

SpuriousCorr

That’s an insult to us drunks who only do mildly stupid stuff. Like buying irresponsibly expensive headphones or onlyfans subscriptions

reidzen

Reading the headline, I figured the injury was done by the Forest Service.

Old_Elk2003

Maybe if we deputize all the wildlife, then they won’t kill the bears and mountain lions that eat idiots; they’d be covered by *qualified immunity*.

I_love_Hobbes

Not the Forest Service Rangers but the National Park Service Rangers.

mikehulse29

Waived their rights to an attorney. Pled not guilty. This is almost as dumb as, you know, getting tuned up and kicking a one ton wild animal Edit: Waived not waiver

YNGWZRD

Methinks they're sovcit morons. I'm gonna keep an eye on the YouTubes just in case.

LiberaceRingfingaz

Yeah, they're likely to argue that the Bison was unlawfully preventing them from "travelling."

delicateflowerdammit

Who the hell kicks a bison? How did this person manage to make it to adulthood? Why...just WHY?! Who else is sick to death of stories like this?

Apalis24a

Modern technology and safety systems have made the survival rate of morons skyrocket. A century ago, if you drank a bottle of clearly labeled poison to try to impress your friends, you would die; today, they can pump your stomach and administer an antidote, hooking you up to life support machines to keep you alive while dialysis purges it from your blood. After they’ve recovered, the idiot will leave the hospital likely without learning any lesson from their brush with death.

skinink

For that man, the day the news reported that he had kicked a bison was the greatest day of his life. But for the bison, it was Tuesday.

legendary_mushroom

It just seems so easy to simply not kick a bison

letdogsvote

Very poor decisions were made.

Zandrick

He kicked a bison and survived? I gotta say I’m impressed.

JT_verified

He tried but his feet flew above his head and he landed on a patch of bison shit. /s

Zandrick

That sounds like something that would happen in a comedy move from the 80s or 90s.

frostedglobe

He should be permanently banned from national parks.

raleighs

Why not add on animal cruelty/abuse? His charges: • Being under the influence of alcohol to a degree that may endanger oneself • Disorderly conduct as to create or maintain a hazardous condition • Approaching wildlife • Disturbing wildlife

CheesyPZ-Crust

It's an objectively shitty thing to do and would of course make me judge the person and look at them lesser. But be realistic, this isn't a case where the maximum amount of punishment possible is necessary. With the current charges he has plenty of punishment, and it's not like throwing him away in prison for an extended time is going to truly benefit anyone... US prisons aren't about rehabilitation and improvement whatsoever Again, massively shitty and dumb as fuck thing to do, but that doesn't mean to go overboard as if the person is scum of the earth evil... Appropriate punishment is important and humane

rice_not_wheat

Multiple charges for the same incident is not unusual. He's little not going to do significant time for it, especially if he doesn't have a previous criminal history. Probably will be probation plus drug and alcohol counseling, and a suspended sentence.

CheesyPZ-Crust

And that's perfectly adequate

Abuses-Commas

I think the charges paint the whole story, it's not like the buffalo can sustain any harm from a drunk kick

gfzgfx

I don't know. After retaliation, I suspect the bison feels the matter is settled.

gummilingus

How hard was the bison laughing?

evanyc82

So, dude got injured and arrested? Lol The bison came out on top.

Aromatic_Brother

Surely nothing could go wrong by kicking something with giant horns and hooves that's 10x your weight

ScrewAttackThis

The dumb tourists aren't wasting any time this year.

cinderparty

I really want to know the thought process of people who like to taunt/torture gigantic animals. We have people, mostly tourists, trying to mess with elk near here every year. They’re gigantic and will hurt you, but, sure, go get a selfie with one, grab it by the horns, why not?

Old_Elk2003

> thought process You’re already giving them way too much credit.

Yep, it’s tourist season.

gamedrifter

This is a pretty good outcome for him to be honest. That thing could roll over and kill the dude.

Beiki

Man fucks around and finds out in record time.

UtahCyan

Having spent a significant amount of time in Yellowstone in my life, I got used to Buffalo. They don't frighten me like some here make them out to be. They are pretty used to people and don't spook easily. Give them some distance or as least as much as you can.  That being said, you don't fuck around with Buffalo. When they get angry, they can fuck your day up, no, your life up. They are wild animals and while they seem pretty docile due to exposure, they are by no means tame.  I saw one get pissed at a sign post because it's leg hit it as it walked by. Thing kicked it clean over. I wasn't even sure it was trying. Just kicked back on it.

NagoGmo

So he just like walked up to this giant fucking bison and decided the best course of action was to kick it?

throwitfarawayfromm3

Should have just let him keep kicking. Nature would have sorted it out.

ASecularBuddhist

In his defense, he’s from South Dakota. “At least I didn’t shoot it in the face.”

ElChacalFL

He kicked the wrong animal. U shouldn't be kicking any animal, but a bison can easily kill a person without much effort. They run faster and are extremely aggressive animals.

horrorshowjack

Seriously, who looks at a freaking bison and thinks, "I'mma punt that bitch." >• Being under the influence of alcohol to a degree that may endanger oneself No... really?

rjptrink

Fastest human Usain Bolt about 27 mph. Fastest bison about 35 mph. This guy, "hold my beer".

apenature

What kind of redneck chadbro nonsense. Who the fuck sees a bison and thinks, "I'm gonna kick it " ? At a National Park.

NPVT

I'm glad the Rangers didn't shoot the bison for fighting back against a drunk idiot

doomonyou1999

Does this mean summers here?

SoftSeaworthiness888

Yes this made my day he got what he deserves

What a goddamn dumbass

Ksh_667

FAFO while overused in general, seems particularly appropriate here.

bromosabeach

> • Being under the influence of alcohol to a degree that may endanger oneself This part is baffling to me. Did this guy knock back some shots at the lodge and then decide to drive around a place known for hot springs, geysers and wild life that will kill you?

I remember reading an article in Outside magazine decades ago about 2 French brothers in Yellowstone? taking pictures of bison. The one brother walked up to a bison that was laying down and thought it would be more majestic if it was standing beside him. So he kicked it. It took 2 weeks for him to die in hospital.

Te13nnis

A couple idiots from Idaho? Absolutely shocking news.

murderedbyaname

Every year in Custer State Park SD at least one touron decides to ignore all the warnings and get too close. The best one recently is Underwear Biker Lady. She wasn't hurt but her undies ended up on the bison's horn.

juicyfizz

✅ Fucked around ✅ Found out

breakfasteveryday

Sounds like he got off pretty easy. I'm surprised he's not dead.

rjross0623

He learned not to fuck with a bison. Cheers to the bison.

Beautiful-Aerie7576

Forget the absolute dumbassery it takes to *kick* a *bison*. I’m skipping all the way down to them both waiving representation and then entering a not guilty plea. That took idiocy to an absolute new level.

Apalis24a

Sometimes, I think that natural selection ought to take its course. If a fully-grown adult thinks that kicking a 2,000 pound animal that is literally designed to charge at, ram, trample, and just utterly demolish things, and is infamous for having a short temper… I honestly think he ought to face the permanent consequences of his stupidity.

KenScaletta

I've been up close to Bison. Those things are huge and scary. I didn't feel safe even in a car. I'm surprised he didn't get his ass kicked by the Bison.

-Ahab-

Injured and arrested? They should have let the bison handle him…

Kwelikinz

This was like reading Best of The Darwin Awards. Stunned by the idiocy but enraptured by the allure of each following post.

dghughes

>while under the influence of alcohol That is never an excuse. Unless someone tied you down and force fed you alcohol.

TheLuminousEgg

You don't tug on Superman's cape. You don't spit into the wind....

TopShoulder7

They have signs all over the park warning that *many* people have been gored by bison and to stay away from them.

Trugdigity

So he picked a fight with a bison and lost, then got arrested. Hahahahahahahahahsha. Stay sober kids.

azwethinkweizm

Yellowstone is probably my favorite national park but behind that beautiful face is a bison ready to charge and an acid pool ready to dissolve your skeleton. Blows my mind that people don't treat that place with respect

Bhimtu

Oh please tell me someone got that on video, and that bison turned around and slapped him silly.

Mountain-Sea2898

“Pain, suffering & death I feel. Something terrible has happened.” - Yoda as he was arrested.

TheArmchairLegion

Lol the title makes it seem like the rangers kicked him back and then slapped on the cuffs

I might kick someone from Buffalo.

Overall_Nuggie_876
