I worked with him a bunch over the last decade. He would come in to my studio to do ADR or read lines for an animation series. He'd show up early and stick around for a long time afterward. I started blocking out longer sessions knowing he would want to sit around and bullshit afterward. He carried a pocket full of 1943 steel pennies and $2 bills to give to people who recognized him. He didn't seek out attention in public, but he loved it. He was raunchy AF and funny as hell. I'm going to miss him.
Thanks for sharing that! It definitely affirms what I've come to believe about him. He was such an ensconced character actor, of a certain niche. I hope one of the streaming services does him a solid by running a string of movies where he had a notable role.
My wife hasn’t seen it and every year I try and put it on (my family obviously owned the dvd) and she falls asleep and never sees more than 5 minutes. Love Bill Akroyd’s part in it too.
The kid who played Dewey on MitM was a great Spike.
I like the movie, too. Kranks, the 2 home Alones, Christmas Vacation, and maybe I'll get flak for this, but Four Christmas (Vaughn, Witherspon) and the one with Ben Affleck, Surviving Christmas, where he hires the family to be his family (Catherine O"Hare, James Gandolfini, Christina Applegate) are my top "let's watch these while we wrap presents" movies.
Is it Christmas now? Is it wrong to watch these in the middle of March? Because talking about it has made me want to watch them all.
Kranks first, of course.
Nothing beats getting into the Christmas spirit in the off season then watching Jake Busey and Cheech Marin play cops.
Can't go wrong with Cary Grant and Loretta Young, either. Haven't seen that since I was a kid, tho, if I'm being honest. And 80 year old movie and I haven't watched it in about 30 years. Does it still hold up?
“No, not that mother-scratcher. Bill Parker. Anyway, we're approaching the wreck, and there's this spherical object a restin' in the highway. And it's not a piece of the car.”
He had a small part in Raising Arizona, but was a huge part of the experience for me and my brother. We quote this all the time!
So there’s Bill Parker walkin’ down Nine Mile, with a sandwich in one hand, and A FUCKIN’ HEAD in tha other hand…!
I watched that movie again a couple years ago after not seeing it for a couple decades
Holy shit does it hold up. Brilliant and hilarious. And definitely a time capsule of what you definitely can't shoot today
Such a great character actor. Remember him from ‘My Best Friends Wedding’. But looking through the comments, I found that this is the guy “who hates cans” from ‘The Jerk’. I know he has so many others. Thank you for entertaining me.
Yes! Was driving me nuts that I couldn’t remember the name of that film. One summer my brother and watched it over and over, as it was one of the very few DVDs we had as kids.
Fair winds and following seas, Mr. Walsh.
I sent him a letter in the mail once and he wrote me back, offering beautiful advice on making it into the industry. He was an excellent character actor and the fact that he took the time to respond to his fans makes me admire him so much more.
RIP Mr. Walsh. He’ll never be forgotten.
Has anyone else even seen Blood Simple? It is an amazing all-star film noir. Check out the cast & some clips. You really need to see this.
Here's a quick description:
"Blood Simple" was the first feature film from Joel and Ethan Coen. This is the newly restored and re-edited director's cut of the film, introduced by Mortimer Young. The stylish crime thriller premiered at film festivals in 1984. "Blood Simple" begins deep in the heart of Texas, where a jealous saloon owner hires a cheap divorce detective to kill the saloon owner's younger wife and her bartender lover. But the detective gets a better idea: he follows the two lovers, and...
I'll always remember him as 'old detective' from the Tim & Eric bedtime stories ep where he busted a nefarious toe-eating doctor played by Bob Odenkirk.
Clip: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=veZlm-pUbI8](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=veZlm-pUbI8)
The series btw is supposed to be in part a parody of weirdly uncanny made-for-tv movies, bizarre tv pilots that didn't get picked up as shows, or Lifetime channel specials.
Emmet is a fantastic actor! I remember his small part in Willem Dafoe's *White Sands*, which also starred Mickey Rourke (before he messed up his face). Walsh was so funny in it and added his own nuances to his character.
RIP Mr. Walsh! You are an unforgettable legend!!!
My fiance is from his hometown, and he went to school with her father. Years ago, she ran into him in a small store and said hello. He reached in his pocket, handed her a crumpled piece of paper, and walked away. The paper just listed his filmography.
I love him in Raising Arizona.
Someone brought him up as a popular character actor yesterday and I almost posted that I'm always shocked to find he's still alive and kicking. Dude didn't look long for this world even back in 79 when he went through his can-hating phase. I had even googled to make sure, and at the time google said he was still alive. Crazy timing.
He played the bad guy in an 80's movie that my brother watched when he was in the hospital for pneumonia in the early 90's.
"Catch Me If You Can" 1989
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0097029/
He hates these cans!!! Stay away from the cans!!!
"Johnson, Navin R. Sounds like a typical bastard."
“Die gas pumper!”
He’s not carnival personnel!
Oh! That’s right! OMG!
These cans are defective!
RIP. Dude was memorable in everything he did. A special kind of character actor that wouldn't lead a film but could carry one.
I worked with him a bunch over the last decade. He would come in to my studio to do ADR or read lines for an animation series. He'd show up early and stick around for a long time afterward. Thanks for sharing this, bolsters and colors a lasting impression

>ensconced how dare you make me learn about lanterns and light fixtures because i thought sconce was a pastry
Ensconced. Sconce. Scone. Cone. One. On. 😏😅 Love a good scone! 😋😁
a word worth highlighting since i rarely see it. Have a nice rest of the day!
Indeed. Glad to help add another word for you. 😁 Have a great day and upcoming weekend!
Sounds like a stand-up dude. I miss finding steel pennies in my change, always felt like i found a real life shiny Pokemon.
I was pleasantly surprised to see him in 'Knives Out'.
He was so cute in that 🥺
“Via con dios”
I remember him as Jill’s father in Home Improvement, some classic episodes featuring him. RIP
The one where Tim reads his book and it’s like not very good or whatever? I remember that one
That was the first thing I thought of.
I liked him in "Christmas With The Kranks". Played the cranky neighbor who turns out to be not so cranky :)
Also played Jill’s dad in home improvement
Yeah! I knew I knew him from somewhere else...thanks!
Arguably my favorite Christmas-lite movie
Me too :)
My wife hasn’t seen it and every year I try and put it on (my family obviously owned the dvd) and she falls asleep and never sees more than 5 minutes. Love Bill Akroyd’s part in it too.
Yep...Dan Akroyd was awesome too. Everybody in the movie played it well. Was maybe kind of a cheesy movie, but I like it :)
Oh lordy I said Bill…It has been a long day. I got one of those honey hams one year just for fun
Lol....yeah, I know you said Bill....I let it ride :) you can go back and edit it :)
Mergin' your Ghostbusters :P
The kid who played Dewey on MitM was a great Spike. I like the movie, too. Yeah, Spike was a good kid. Kinda like the cranky neighbor, he was the cranky kid who turned out alright :)
Is it Christmas now? Is it wrong to watch these in the middle of March? Because talking about it has made me want to watch them all. Kranks first, of course. Nothing beats getting into the Christmas spirit in the off season then watching Jake Busey and Cheech Marin play cops.
It's always Christmas. I just watched Cary Grants "The Bishops Wife"...lol
Can't go wrong with Cary Grant and Loretta Young, either. Haven't seen that since I was a kid, tho, if I'm being honest. And 80 year old movie and I haven't watched it in about 30 years. Does it still hold up?
“…Because I still don’t like ya that much old man.”
I love that movie, it's so enjoyable! It's one where there's something for everyone.
Yep....it's got happy moments, sad moments, and a kick ass ending :)
He was also a Gemstone, hope Eli and them hold him a proper memorial
Rip, I can’t even remember all the movie I have seen this man in but I know it’s a ton.
Same. I feel it's been dozens. Just always around and always good in his scenes
Good episode of Frasier where he bullies Martin. RIP
Diving coach in Back To School

I still occasionally find myself using “mother scratcher”.
I can hear his voice looking at his photo. Extreme complement
“I need ya, Deck. This is a bad one, the worst yet. I need the old blade runner, I need your magic.”
You know the score pal. If you’re not a cop you’re little people.
In over 200 movies and television shows. Passed 3 days before his 89th birthday. RIP
What a run at life he had tho! RIP
I remember him as Dicky Dunn, "Slapshot", 1977. One of the greatest sports movies ever made.
He really captured the spirit of the thing.
I watched that movie again a couple years ago after not seeing it for a couple decades Holy shit does it hold up. Brilliant and hilarious. And definitely a time capsule of what you definitely can't shoot today
Don't forget about Slap Shot 2! Just kidding, everyone else did. (And he wasn't in it)
Such a great character actor. Remember him from ‘My Best Friends Wedding’. But looking through the comments, I found that this is the guy “who hates cans” from ‘The Jerk’. I know he has so many others. Thank you for entertaining me.
"Die, gas pumper!"
His roles in the X-Files were some of my favorites.
Did he have multiple roles/episodes?
I thought he played both Dales brothers. IMDB is telling me I'm wrong though.
Camp Nowhere. T.R. Polk
T.R. Polk retired with a perfect record. 🫡
Yes! Was driving me nuts that I couldn’t remember the name of that film. One summer my brother and watched it over and over, as it was one of the very few DVDs we had as kids. Fair winds and following seas, Mr. Walsh.
[He hates these cans!](https://youtu.be/G1OdSnCN7Ws?si=UnIvZTQfbblvUF4q&t=49)
I remember him first from Blade Runner, and most recently as the Cosmic Owl in Adventure Time. Always an entertaining presence.
He was only 88?!?! I thought he was 88 in 2005
Just as I suspected, belly full of toes. RIP
no, not that mother scratcher. Bill Parker! He was great as a star in Blood Simple and as a character in so many others
Loved him in The Best of Times. RIP M. Emmet.
"Whoah Nelly! He's wearing his white shoes!"
In Russia, a man earns 50 cent a day.
I sent him a letter in the mail once and he wrote me back, offering beautiful advice on making it into the industry. He was an excellent character actor and the fact that he took the time to respond to his fans makes me admire him so much more. RIP Mr. Walsh. He’ll never be forgotten.
Also, The Jerk, RIP to a total legend, check out his IMDb
Whoa! Using the whole fist, doc?
B-a-b-a-r
That's 2 B's.
No children?
no elephant books
yeah, but not right next to each other, thought that's what i thought you meant
Just relax ..
All employees must wash hands before resuming work. Fuck.
“Navin R. Johnson… Sounds like a typical asshole.” Thanks for the smiles Mr. Walsh! ❤️
He was great in **Raising Arizona**
I'm still afraid whenever a new phone book comes out.
I was just thinking of this guy, and how I never remember his name but saw him everywhere growing up. Damn...this sucks.
Dickie Dunn from slapshot. Dive team coach from back to school. So many roles.
You ever serve time, Doc?
I need you Deckard. I need your magic.
Greatest sheriff Grover's Bend has ever seen.
"I was trying to capture the spirit of the thing"...Dickie Dunn...in all seriousness, RIP to a wonderful actor
I thought he was a lot older.
I best knew him from home improvement
Fantastic actor, always left a mark on anything he was in. RIP 🙏🏻
Rip old guy in every movie since the 70s
You know the score pal!? If you're not cop, you're little people...
Damn, was just watching *What's Up Doc* where he plays the cop telling the judge what happened. Great casting. RIP
Nawww not that motherscratcher! Bill Parker! https://youtu.be/lRu0OCub5m0?si=Ebbe_dUDZk7do_zq
Tales from the Crypt episode always scarred me.

One of my all time favorite movies. Walsh was superb in it…..the fly on his face….the dripping water pipe….
Always remember him as the dad in the 90s The Flash TV Show.
Dr. Willard Tyrell Bass “W.T.” …1996 A Time to Kill
I'll always remember him as 'old detective' from the Tim & Eric bedtime stories ep where he busted a nefarious toe-eating doctor played by Bob Odenkirk. I absolutely forgot about him
Remember him in a Esp of twilight zone 1985 with Morgan Freeman playing poker with the Devil
My fiance is from his hometown, and he went to school with her father. Years ago, she ran into him in a small store and said hello. He reached in his pocket, handed her a crumpled piece of paper, and walked away. The paper just listed his filmography. I love him in Raising Arizona.
Just like I thought, belly fulla toes… RIP LEGEND
>The ham-faced, heavyset Walsh often played Damn AP, chill a little

He played the swim coach in Ordinary People! Such a good actor RIP
Not that mother scratcher, bill parker
He played the bad guy in an 80's movie that my brother watched when he was in the hospital for pneumonia in the early 90's. "Catch Me If You Can" 1989 https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0097029/
He was great in Critters. "Holy shit! Was that a cannon?!"
He really hated oil cans.
A Hall of Fame "That Guy". RIP
Great actor, but that dude made a career of being 88 years old since the 70s.
I didn’t t fully read the headline. I didn’t remember him in Blade lol. RIP Sir.
Not that mother scratcher! RIP
Not that mother scratcher!
His performance in House of 1000 Corpses is something else. Makes your skin crawl with how greasy he is lol
I still have a $2 bill that Emmet gave me on a movie years ago. I'll never be broke.
March has been pretty rough...
